  • I can't install Truecrypt on Ubuntu 12.04

    I have a Windows 7 machine with Truecrypt. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 with the intention of converting to an Ubuntu only machine but I can't install Truecrypt on Ubuntu. I have been looking through the forums and have followed all advice to the letter and still Truecrypt doesn't work; I have only a non-functional icon in "dash". Should I uninstall Ubuntu and start over (ie reinstall)? I love Ubuntu and greatly appreciate your efforts on this forum.

  • Slow Internet / Can't change brightness on 2010 Macbook AIr running 12.10 Ubuntu

    The title really says it all. I haven't been able to change the brightness of my monitor since putting Ubuntu on it. I started off with 12.04 and then decided to see if 12.10 would fix the issue. The internet is also a fair bit slower than I am used to, especially when downloading. Apart from these two issues, everything goes very smoothly. If anyone could offer any advice or solutions, I would be very grateful.

    I've got a problem with Ubuntu 10.10 suspend / hibernation. When I try to do one of these actions, computer prepares but in the end a blank screen comes up with just a single underscore blinking. Computer becomes unresponsive to mouse/keyboard and only pressing power button on chasis restores it. Disks and coolers are working during the suspend / hibernation as if nothing happened. Can anyone give me some advice how to solve it? Thank you.

    Hello: I'm looking to wire my home with CAT-X (where X is probably going to be CAT-6, unless someone can convince me differently. ;) ). I'm seeking advice on what equipment I'll need for the job, and any things I should watch out for. It's a two story half-duplex I'll be wiring, roughly about 1800 sq ft. Here's what I believe I need so far: Bulk CAT-6 Ethernet cabling CM Rated Gigabit switch(es?) Patch panel Equipment for cutting, terminating wire, fishing through walls, etc Wall outlet covers, etc. Questions I have: Does it matter the MHz rating on the Ethernet cable? If so, why? I have two gigabit switches currently, an 8-port and a 5-port. Should I buy one massive switch to cover all the connections I need, or should I just chain the two together and buy a switch for however many other connections I need? Do I really need a patch panel? I understand it keeps the cables looking cleaner than coming out of a hole in the wall, but is there some other product I can use, perhaps combining a switch with a patch panel or some such? Ideally I'll have all this running out of a relatively small closet, so the less components (or smaller) the better. Any advice, links, or suggested product to use/avoid would be appreciated!

  • Intel Wireless 4965AGN not achieving N throughput when connected to an Airport Express N network

    I have an Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN adaptor in my laptop (HP Pavillion dv2000 series) which is connecting to a 5Ghz-only 802.11n network provided by an Apple Airport Express. The network is using WPA2 encryption. My desktop is also connected the Airport, via a Linksys WUSB600N USB adaptor. Both are running with the latest drivers, and the Airport is running the latest firmware. The Airport is also configured to use wide channels. The problem I have is that I never get throughput above 4MB/s when transferring files between the two machines. Even a pessimistic calculation shows a 270Mbps network as being capable of transfer rates at well above 10MB/s. I'm pretty sure I've isolated the issue to being the Intel adaptor, as wiring the desktop to the AP, and using the Linksys adaptor on the laptop immediately yielded speeds limited by the 100MB/s ethernet connection. I know that 802.11n is still a draft standard, and so mixing kit from different manufacturers can easily lead to poor results, but I was just wondering if anybody else out there has had success with this Intel adaptor on an N network? Or even better, connecting it to an Airport Express? Can anybody give me any advice on how to troubleshoot this issue? I should also mention that the Airport Express doesn't allow you to manually specify channels when running in N mode, and that I've been able to rule out interference from other Wireless LANs by scanning. There aren't any other 5GHz networks in my area. All ideas welcome! Update: A while later, I've just updated to the most recent drivers for both the Intel chip in the laptop, and the USB adaptor. Unfortunately this hasn't improved things :(. If anybody has any advice it would be be gratefully received.

  • Exchange 2007 restore - Backup Exec Unable to Attach to a resource

    I have been struggling with this one for months! Grateful for any advice. The setup is a windows 2003 server network, 4xservers on the domain. Two exchange 2007 servers (only one with mailboxes still on). Backup Exec (12.5) on a non-exchange server with agents on the others. Backup exec runs a full backup of exchange across the network well, at pretty reasonable speeds. However, when you try any kind of restore (individual emails, mailboxes or whole system restore - all to same location or to alternate server, RSG etc) the following message is received within about 10-15 secs of starting the job: Job ended: 24 December 2010 at 13:28:32 Completed status: Failed Final error: 0xe000848c - Unable to attach to a resource. Make sure that all selected resources exist and are online, and then try again. If the server or resource no longer exists, remove it from the selection list. Edit the selection list properties, click the View Selection Details tab, and then remove the resource. Final error category: Resource Errors For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-33932 Things I have already tried: Changed account to main administrator account (with all permissions) checked versions of ese.dll on both servers - both the same Checked all VSS writers on both servers are stable / normal restoring to different locations Any advice anyone could give would be much appreciated.     I'm preparing to launch a service soon which will provide third party websites a widget. The widget requires my javascript file in the website's code. Exactly the same way services like analytics, uservoice, sharethis, getclicky, etc provide you with a javascript snippet to add to your page. Therefore, my javascript file is going to be hotlinked by tons of websites which possibly receive a lot of requests too. I need advice/opinions on the following aspects: What's the right location for hosting this file? Should I use a sub-domain for it? I was thinking of something like http://api.myservice.com/js/foo.js . Remember, once websites start embedding this file, its location CANNOT change under any circumstances. Right now we can afford just one dedicated server. So I have minified my file, enabled gzip and plan to use some good cache control headers through apache. Also, in the near future when the requests pickup, I will use a http proxy like Varnish. Is this a good plan for the near future? Should I be considering a CDN in the future (since we can't afford it now)? If so how do I make sure we're prepared to migrate to it without breaking services. Pros/Cons of moving just this file to a CDN? Also, since its just one javascript file(50kb), any affordable CDN so we could consider it in the beginning itself? Any other word of advice I could use? Anything I shouldn't overlook at this stage which I would regret later? (both in terms of server + javascript ajax limitations) Thanks in advance.

  • Troubleshooting wireless connection problem / site survey?

    I just started in the IT department of a small company (200 users) and it's clear that one of the main problems that is driving everyone crazy is the spotty nature of the wireless connectivity throughout the office, particularly in certain conference rooms. This is a huge problem because the connection often drops during important presentations to clients. I was hired to help ease the load on the existing IT admin, who has done a great job, but is overloaded with many other tasks to deal with. So I would like to try to help out with this wireless issue. I am looking for advice on the best way to solve this problem--a realistic troubleshooting methodology that does not require me to spend any money. So far, I've experimented with Ekahau Heat Mapper, which is free and helps create a site survey. But I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for or if there are other programs/tools/methods I should try as well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. [Some background: The wireless setup consists of an HP ProCurve Mobility MSM (710?) controller that controls 10 access points throughout the building. There are three virtual wireless networks configured on the controller: one seems to be a default that cannot be changed, one is for internal employees and authenticates via Active Directory, and the third is a guest network for visitors. When I use HeatMapper, these show up as three different SSIDs, with different MAC addresses, all on the same channel. At first I thought maybe this would cause interference, but this seems to be the way the controller works;apparently, it automatically configures the channels to avoid interference from the other APs on the network.]

  • Convert DVD Movie to MPEG and view on PS3 via Windows Media Server 12

    I think Apollo spacecraft missions to the moon were easier than this! I have tried dozens of DVD ripping software and media servers and have had limited success in trying to convert all my DVDs into file format so they can be viewed on PS3. I have also been on dozens of forums and it's all getting a bit confusing, some advice is out of date, some software is no longer updated - updates have been applied to PS3 operating system and windows and so on and so on. There has to be a way to get all this knowledge and information in one place that's up to date so people can do the same thing as me. Can anyone give me some definitive software and/or advice to do the following: I have over 200 DVDs - I want to convert these to VOB files (rename to MPEG so WMS can stream them). Store on hard disk and view via Windows Media Server 12 (Windows 7). I will then be able to view these via my PS3 in my lounge and never have to get out another DVD case again. I don't want to encode to any other format like MP4 with H.264 because I will lose some of the original quality. So MPEG-2 is fine for me. Note: I have been using DVD Shrink but it gives odd results sometimes. The main problem being that once the DVD has been ripped - WMS shows the wrong playing length of the film, however if I use VLC Media Player it will play through the whole film OK. This is obviously no good when it comes to streaming on the PS3.
