FAQ: Highlight GridView Row on Click and Retain Selected Row on Postback

A couple of months ago I’ve written a simple demo about “Highlighting GridView Row on MouseOver”. I’ve noticed many members in the forums (http://forums.asp.net) are asking how to highlight row in GridView and retain the selected row across postbacks. So I’ve decided to write this post to demonstrate how to implement it as reference to others who might need it. In this demo I going to use a combination of plain JavaScript and jQuery to do the client-side manipulation. I presumed that you already know how to bind the grid with data because I will not include the codes for populating the GridView here. For binding the gridview you can refer this post: Binding GridView with Data the ADO.Net way or this one: GridView Custom Paging with LINQ. To get started let’s implement the highlighting of GridView row on row click and retain the selected row on postback. This is normal because the the server doesn't know anything about the client/browser not unless if you do something to notify the server that something has changed. To persist the settings we will use some HiddenFields control to store the data so that when it postback we can reference the value from there. It is also where we set the previous row and rowIndex values in HiddenFields. The $(function(){}); is a short-hand for the jQuery document.ready event. This event will be fired once the page is posted back to the server that’s why we call the function RetainSelectedRow(). The RetainSelectedRow() function is where we referenced the current selected values stored from the HiddenFields and pass these values to the ChangeRowColor() function to retain the highlighted row. Set up linux box for hosting a-z

I am in the process of reinstalling the OS on a machine that will be used to host a couple of apps for our business. The apps will be local only; access from external clients will be via vpn only. The prior setup used a hosting control panel (Plesk) for most of the admin, and I was looking at using another similar piece of software for the reinstall - but I figured I should finally learn how it all works. I can do most of the things the software would do for me, but am unclear on the symbiosis of it all. This is all an attempt to further distance myself from the land of Configuration Programmer/Programmer, if at all possible. I can't find a full walkthrough anywhere for what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd put up this question, and if people can help me on the way I will edit this with the answers, and document my progress/pitfalls. Hopefully someday this will help someone down the line. The details: CentOS 5.5 x86_64 httpd: Apache/2.2.3 mysql: 5.0.77 (to be upgraded) php: 5.1 (to be upgraded) The requirements: SECURITY!! Secure file transfer Secure client access (SSL Certs and CA) Secure data storage Virtualhosts/multiple subdomains Local email would be nice, but not critical The Steps: Download latest CentOS DVD-iso (torrent worked great for me). Install CentOS: While going through the install, I checked the Server Components option thinking I was going to be using another Plesk-like admin. In hindsight, considering I've decided to try to go my own way, this probably wasn't the best idea. Basic config: Setup users, networking/ip address etc. Yum update/upgrade. Upgrade PHP/MySQL: To upgrade PHP and MySQL to the latest versions, I had to look to another repo outside CentOS. IUS looks great and I'm happy I found it! Customizing JBar for Notifications

Lately I've been using JBar, a very neat jQuery plugin for displaying notifications in my web applications. Unfortunately the original version of JBar only supports binding to the click event of a DOM item. In order to get around this limitation I have modified the source code and posted an updated version on my GitHub account here. The modified version allows you to display a JBar notification by calling a method. I typically use it to display succes or failure messages when doing Ajax calls. I have also included some additional CSS and JS so that you can diplay different styles of notifications. showNotification(message) shows a green "success" message. showWarning(message) shows an orange "warning" message. showMessage(message, className) allows you to specify a custom class to apply to the notification for additional styling purposes. FAQ–Highlight GridView Row on Click and Retain Selected Row on Postback

A couple of months ago I’ve written a simple demo about “Highlighting GridView Row on MouseOver”. I’ve noticed many members in the forums (http://forums.asp.net) are asking how to highlight row in GridView and retain the selected row across postbacks. So I’ve decided to write this post to demonstrate how to implement it as reference to others who might need it. In this demo I going to use a combination of plain JavaScript and jQuery to do the client-side manipulation. I presumed that you already know how to bind the grid with data because I will not include the codes for populating the GridView here. For binding the gridview you can refer this post: Binding GridView with Data the ADO.Net way or this one: GridView Custom Paging with LINQ. To get started let’s implement the highlighting of GridView row on row click and retain the selected row on postback. Proper way to measure the scalability of web Application

Let's say that I have a web Application where i'm going to have 300 users and each one have to see data on real time, imagine that each client make an ajax call to the server to see in real time what's happens with the changes of the data, this calls are made each 300 ms per user. I know that i can run a simulation to see if the hardware of my server supports this example. But what happen's if the number of users start to grow up. Is there a way that i can measure the hardware needed to handle this growing behavior, a software, a formula, algorithm or maybe recommend me if i need to implement an distributed application with multiplies servers and balance the loads.

Building a website, want to use java

I'd like to make a simple-ish website that is essentially a small game. Key strokes are to be processed and sent to a server (already acquired and should support SQL and JSP, I believe) which then translate to a location and written to the DB. SQL queries are to be used to retrieve these locations and written to other clients connected to the website. Their page is to be updated with these locations. I have working knowledge of Java, jQuery/Ajax, SQL and JavaScript but I'm unfamiliar with JSP and how everything hooks up. I'm aware of the MVC paradigm as well. For my little game idea, would these technologies work? Am I over thinking this and can make it much easier to implement? What might be a good tutorial or example to study?

Demantra 7.3.1.3 Controlling MDP_MATRIX Combinations Assigned to Forecasting Tasks Using TargetTaskSize

New 7.3.1.3 parameter: TargetTaskSize Old parameter: BranchID Multiple, deprecated 7.3.1.3 onwards Parameter Location: Parameters > System Parameters > Engine > Proport Default: 0 Engine Mode: Both Details: Specifies how many MDP_MATRIX combinations the analytical engine attempts to assign to each forecasting task. Allocation will be affected by forecsat tree branch size. TaskTargetSize is automcatically calculated. It holds the perferred branch size, in number of combinations in the lowest level. This parameter is adjusted to a lower value for smaller schemas, depending on the number of available engines. - As the forecast is generated the engine goes up the tree using max_fore_level and not top_level -1. Max_fore_level has to be less than or equal to top_level -1. Due to this requirement, combinations falling under the same top level -1 member must be in the same task. A member of the top level -1 of the forecast tree is known as a branch. An engine task is therefore comprised of one or more branches. - Reveal current task size go to Engine Administrator --> View --> Branch Information and run the application on your Demantra schema. This will be deprecated in 7.3.1.3 since there is no longer a means of adjusting the brach size directly. The focus is now on proper hierarchy / forecast design. - Control of tasks The number of tasks created is the lowest of number of branches, as defined by top level -1 members in forecast tree, and engine sessions and the value of TargetTaskSize. You are used to using the branch multiplier in this calculation. As of 7.3.1.3, the branch ID multiple is deprecated. - Discovery of current branch size To resolve this you must review the 2nd highest level in the forecast tree (below highest/highest) as this is the level which determines the size of the branches. If a few resulting tasks are too large it is recommended that the forecast tree level driving branches be revised or at times completely removed from the forecast tree. - Control of foreacast tree branch size - Run the following sql to determine how even the branches are being split by the engine: select count(*),branch_id from mdp_matrix where prediction_status = 1 and do_fore = 1 group by branch_id; This will give you an understanding if some of the individual branches have an unusually large number of rows and thus might indicate that the engine is not efficiently dividing up the parallel tasks. - Based on the results of this sql, we may want to adjust the branch id multiplier and/or the number of engines (both of these settings are found in the Engine Administrator) select count(*), level_id from mdp_matrix where prediction_status = 1 and do_fore = 1 group by level_id; This will give us an understanding at which level of the Forecast tree where the forecast is being generated. Having a majority of combinations higher on the forecast tree might indicate either a poorly designed forecast tree and/or engine parameters that are too strict Based on the results of this we would adjust the Forecast Tree to see if choosing a different hierarchy might produce a forecast, with more combinations, at a lower level. For example: - Review the 2nd highest level in the forecast tree, below highest/highest, as this is the level which determines the size of the branches. - If a few resulting tasks are too large it is recommended that the forecast tree level driving branches be revised or at times completely removed from the forecast tree. - For example, if the highest level of the forecast tree is set to Brand/All Locations. - You have 10 brands but 2 of the brands account for 67% and 29% of all combinations. - There is a distinct possibility that the tasks resulting from these 2 branches will be too large for a single engine to process. Some possible solutions could be to remove the Brand level and instead use a different product grouping which has a more even distribution, possibly Product Group. - It is also possible to add a location dimension to this forecast tree level, for example Customer. This will also reduce forecast tree branch size and will deliver a balanced task allocation. - A correctly configured Forecast Tree is something that is done by the Implementation team and is not the responsibility of Oracle Support. Allocation will be affected by forecast tree branch size. When TargetTaskSize is set to 0, the default value, the system automatically calculates a value for 'TargetTaskSize' depending on the number of engines. - QUESTION: Does this mean that if TargetTaskSize is 1, we use tree branch size to allocate branches to tasks instead of automatically calculating the size? ANSWER: DEV Strongly recommends that the setting of TargetTaskSize remain at the DEFAULT of ZERO (0). - How to control the number of engines? Determine how many CPUs are on the machine(s) that is (are) running the engine. As mentioned earlier, the general rule is that you should designate 2 engines per each CPU that is available. So for example, if you are running the engine on a machine that has 4 CPU then you can have up to 8 engines designated in the Engine Administrator. In this type of architecture then instead of having one 'localhost' in your Engine Settings Screen, you would have 'localhost' repeated eight times in this field. Where do I set the number of engines? To add multiples computers where engine will run, please do a back-up of Settings.xml file under Analytical Engines\bin\ folder, then edit it and add there the selected machines. Example, this will allow 3 engines to start: - <Entry> <Key argument="ComputerNames" /> <Value type="string" argument="localhost,localhost,localhost" /> </Entry Otherwise, if there are no additional engines defined, the calculated value of 'TargetTaskSize' is used. (Oracle does not recommend changing the default value.) The TargetTaskSize holds the engines prefered branch size, in number of level 1 combinations. - Level 1 combinations, known as group size The engine manager will use this parameter to attempt creating branches with similar size. * The engine manager will not create engines that do not have a branch. The engine divider algorithm uses the value of 'TargetTaskSize' as a system-preferred branch size to create branches that are more equal in size which improves engine performance. The engine divider will try to add as many tasks as possible to an existing branch, up to the limit of 'TargetTaskSize' level 1 combinations, before adding new branches. As programmers, you have certain curtains to hide behind with your code. With PHP all of your code is server side preprocessed, so this never see's the light of day as far as the user is concerned. If you have maybe rushed through some code for a deadline, as long as it functions correctly then the user never needs to know how many expletives you've inserted into the comments. However with more and more applications being written for the web, with a desktop feel implemented by AJAX and popular frameworks like jQuery being banded around to every Tom, Dick and Harry, how can a programmer maintain some dignity and hide his/her JavaScript code without it being flaunted like dirty laundry when the users hit Right Click-View Source or Inspect Element. Are there any ways to hide JavaScript application logic/code?

Java web UI framework like ASP.NET MVC?

I'm doing some web apps for personal projects that might be shared out with my friends. I'm trying to use skills that will help me at work, but don't have $$ to spend on Visual Studio right now and don't want to try to cobble something together with Express Editions. Since I've been sort of wanting to bring my Java skills up to date and the main skills I want to work on are design and architecture skills, this isn't a big deal - except that I have no idea how to track down the right UI framework. I know I want something based on MVC, to get more practice with frameworks for that design pattern (we're using ASP .NET MVC2 at work). The UIs that I'll be making will be pretty simple - data entry, buttons, text, images. They will need AJAX. Any thoughts about which frameworks to look at? I'll be watching the comments, if anyone wants additional clarification on what I'm looking for.

Server overhead caused by bots?

I have one customer website causing overhead (http://www.modacalcio.it/en/by-kind/football-boots.html). With htop opened, I am trying navigate the website and the much load of the website is done by the ajax link being placed on the left side of the website. The website is hosted by a VPS with 3 proc and 2GB RAM, with enough hard with disk space. The real problem is that this website is new and not visited much. From the http-status module I am seeing that the overhead is caused by bots (Google bots, Bing bots, hrefs checker and so on). So I thought that's probably due to those spiders trying to crawl all those links at once - could this be causing this overhead? I have also put rel="nofollow" in those links, but this doesn't keep the bots away. Is there any way through code or Plesk to disable those links to those bots?

What is the relationship between the business logic layer and the data access layer?

I'm working on an MVC-ish app (I'm not very experienced with MVC, hence the "-ish"). My model and data access layer are hard to test because they're very tightly coupled, so I'm trying to uncouple them. What is the nature of the relationship between them? Should just the model know about the DAL? Should just the DAL know about the model? Or should both the model and the DAL be listeners of the other? In my specific case, it's: a web application the model is client-side (javascript) the data is accessed from the back-end using Ajax persistence/back-end is currently PHP/MySQL, but may have to switch to Python/GoogleDataStore on the GAE

When Googlebot sees a link, will it click it or navigate to it?

My site uses pushState and JSON data to display content. So, for example, this might appear on my page: <a href="/some/page">some page</a> The JavaScript then prevents the default action (following the link), and instead renders a view (using a different api, such as /getjson?some_page). $('[href]').click(function(){ history.pushState(...); handleURL(...); }); Assume my server will respond to requests at /some/page with a pre-rendered version. My questions are: will Googlebot receive the prerendered version, or allow JavaScript to instead invoke pushState, etc. if it doesn't make the direct request, will it wait for AJAX content to be loaded? does Googlebot implement pushState, so it will show the proper URL in search results?

A simple message room

Can anyone recommend a simple message room (not chat room) which I can use for a private communication between my users. My idea: to grant some users (2-3 at the most) a specific privilege to talk privately in a message room. none of them would be administrator there. I need such features: - admin panel for adding users allowed to post messages in room - room invisible to anyone except users - filtering not-allowed words - Ajax-enabled so that replies appear immediately - other message room features I have a linux hosting so PHP message room would be the best option. I thought of using a forum for this, but it's too much work as a forum is public by nature and I need something private by nature. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Using disqus for a website (question on SERP and backlink)

I am building a website and am trying to decide between writing my own commenting system and using disquss. One of the main deciding factors is that (obviously), I want comments left on my page to be show on SERPS. However, I remeber reading somewhere that disqus loads comments into a page using AJAX - and therefore the comments are "invisible" as far as Googlebot and other SE crawlers are concerned. Could someone confirm or refute this? The other question I have is about whether (as a commenter), When I place a comment on another website using disqus (including any links I may add to my comment), do the lionks in my comment count as a backlink (in other words are they "dofollow" or "nofollow" links)?

For those not familiar with those terms here is the summary, plenty of material out there on what it is, but here is what in my experience it means: jQuery Templating: A templating engine that allows you to specify a client-side template where you indicate which properties/tags you want dynamically updated. You in a sense specify which parts of the html is dynamic and since it is pluggable you are able to use tools data jQuery data linking and others to let it sync up your template with data. What makes it more powerful is that you can easily work with rows of data, adding and removing rows. Once the template has been generated, which you do dynamically on a client-side event, you then append/inject the resulting template somewhere in your DOM, like for example you would get a JSON object from the database, map it to your template, it populates the template with your data in the indicated places, and then let’s say for example append it to a row in a table. I have not found it that useful for lets say a single record of data since you could easily just get a partial view from the server via an html type ajax call. It really shines when you dynamically add/remove rows from a list in the DOM. I have not found an alternative that meets the functionality of the jQuery template and helps of course that Microsoft officially supports it. In future versions of the jQuery plug-in it may even ship as part of the standard jQuery library and with future versions of Visual Studio. jQuery Data Linking: In short I was fascinated by it initially by how with one line of code I can sync up my JSON object with my form elements. That's where my enthusiasm stopped. It was one-line to let is deal with syncing up your form with your JSON object, but it is not bidirectional as they state and I tried all the work arounds they suggested and none of them work. The problem is that when you update your JSON object it DOES NOT sync it up with your form. In an example, accounts are being edited client side by selecting the account from a list by clicking on the row, it then fetches the entire account JSON object via ajax json-type call and then refreshes the form with the account’s details from the new JSON object. What is the use of syncing up my JSON with the form if I still have to programmatically sync up my new JSON object with each DOM property?! So you may ask: “what is the alternative”? Good question and the same one I was pondering, maybe I can just use it for keeping my from n sync with my JSON object so I can post that JSON object back to the server and update my database. That’s when I discovered Knockout: Knockout It addresses the issues mentioned above and also supports event handling through the observer pattern. Not wanting to go into detail here, Steve Sanderson, the creator of Knockout, has already done a terrific job of that, thanks Steve for a great plug-in! Best of all it integrates perfectly with the jQuery Templating engine as well. I have not found an alternative to this plugin that supports the depth and width of functionality and would recommend it to anyone. The only drawback is the embedded html attributes (data-bind=””) tags that you have to add to the HTML, in my opinion tying your behavior to your HTML, where I like to separate behavior from HTML as well as CSS, so the HTML is purely to define content, not styling or behavior. But there are plusses to this as well and also a nifty work around to this that I will just shortly mention here with an example. Instead of data binding an html tag with knockout event handling like so: <%=Html.TextBox("PrepayDiscount", String.Empty, new { @class = "number" })%> Do: <%=Html.DataBoundTextBox("PrepayDiscount", String.Empty, new { @class = "number" })%> The html extension above then takes care of the internals and you could then swap Knockout for something else if you want to inside the extension and keep the HTML plugin agnostic. Writing selenium tests, should I just get it done or get it right?

I'm attempting to drive my user interface (heavy on javascript) through selenium. I've already tested the rest of my ajax interaction with selenium successfully. However, this one particular method seems to be eluding me because I can't seem to fake the correct click event. I could solve this problem by simply waiting in the test for the user to click a point and then continuing with the test but this seems like a cop out. But I'm really running out of time on my deadline to have this done and working. Should I just get this done and move on or should I spend the extra (unknown) amount of time to fix this problem and be able to have my selenium tests 100% automated?
