• USB Device first mounted as root, then by user

  When I connect my Kindle, it shows up as an usb0 media, which I can read but not write (owner = root). However, if I do sudo umount /media/usb0, usb0 gets unmounted and a Kindle media gets mounted properly (is writable etc.). What can cause such strange behavior? It's not only with Kindle, but with Flash drives etc. as well. • Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web ICT: second draft published from WCAG2ICT Task Force - for public review

  Last Thursday the W3C published an updated Working Draft of Guidance on Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web Information and Communications Technologies. As I noted last July when the first draft was published, the motivation for this guidance comes from the Section 508 refresh draft, and also the European Mandate 376 draft, both of which seek to apply the WCAG 2.0 level A and AA Success Criteria to non-web ICT documents and software. This second Working Draft represents a major step forward in harmonization with the December 5th, 2012 Mandate 376 draft documents, including specifically Draft EN 301549 "European accessibility requirements for public procurement of ICT products and services". This work greatly increases the likelihood of harmonization between the European and American technical standards for accessibility, for web sites and web applications, non-web documents, and non-web software. As I noted last October at the European Policy Centre event: "The Accessibility Act – Ensuring access to goods and services across the EU", and again last month at the follow-up EPC event: "Accessibility - From European challenge to global opportunity", "There isn't a 'German Macular Degernation', a 'French Cerebral Palsy', an 'American Autism Spectrum Disorder'. Disabilities are part of the human condition. They’re not unique to any one country or geography – just like ICT. Even the built environment – phones, trains and cars – is the same worldwide. The definition of ‘accessible’ should be global – and the solutions should be too. Harmonization should be global, and not just EU-wide. It doesn’t make sense for the EU to have a different definition to the US or Japan." With these latest drafts from the W3C and Mandate 376 team, we've moved a major step forward toward that goal of a global "definition of 'accessible' ICT." I strongly encourage all interested parties to read the Call for Review, and to submit comments during the current review period, which runs through 15 February 2013. • General questions regarding open-source licensing

  I'm looking to release an open-source iOS software project but I'm very new to the licensing side of the things. While I'm aware that the majority of answers here will not lawyers, I'd appreciate it if anyone could steer me in the right direction. With the exception of the following requirements I'm happy for developers to largely do whatever they want with the projects source code. I'm not interested in any copyleft licensing schemes, and while I'd like to encourage attribution in derivative works it is not required. As such, my requirements are as follows: Original source can be distributed and re-distributed (verbatim) both commercially and non-commercially as long as the original copyright information, website link and license is maintained. I wish to retain rights to any of the multi-media distributed as part of the project (sound effects, graphics, logo marks, etc). Such assets will be included to allow other developers to easily execute the project, but cannot be re-distributed in any manner. I wish to retain rights to the applications name and branding. Futher to selecting an applicable license, I have the following questions: The project makes use of a number of third-party libraries (all licensed under variants of the MIT license). I've included individual licenses within the source (and application) and believe I've met all requirements expressed in these licenses, but is there anything else that needs to be done before distributing them as part of my open-source project? Also included in my project is a single proprietary, close-sourced library that's used to power a small part of the application. I'm obviously unable to include this in the source release, but what's the best way of handling this? Should I simply weak-link the project and exclude it entirely from the Git project?

• Learning from jQuery - Solid fundament for experienced jQuery developers

  Frankly speaking, I had to sleep a night over before typing this review. And even now it is not an easy, straight-forward task to write this recension. I'm not sure whether I'm the right kind of audience this title is actually addressed to. It clearly states that this book is for web developers which are very familiar with jQuery library but would like to extend their knowledge to vanilla JavaScript. Not being part of this particular group it felt strange to go through the various chapters after all. This title is clearly addressed to experienced jQuery users and developers especially while looking for improvements in performance and better ways of optimisations. Sometimes just to simplify the existing jQuery code in order to avoid the heavy load of the complete jQuery library and sometimes for the better understanding of JavaScript and its syntax. Callum's style of writing is clear and the numerous code samples used to emphasize the various techniques are good ones and easy to understand. Quite interestingly, it put a light smile on my face when I compared his sample code of sending an AJAX request to some code in one of my own blog articles I wrote back in 2006 (in German language). JavaScript is clearly a mature language and certain requirements are simply done this way. And Callum explains the nuts and bolts of JavaScript very well. Personally, I gained most out of this book from chapter 5 - JavaScript Conventions. The paragraphs and code snippets on Optimizations and Common Antipatterns gave me a better understanding on various aspects of JavaScript development, and I definitely have to revise a couple of code fragments I have written in the past. Overall the book provides solid information on JavaScript for jQuery developers and is worth the money spent. Just be sure that you're part of the targeted audience.

• Is there a special way to set up Garry's Mod for Mac? [closed]

  I just downloaded Garry's Mod from Steam and every time I try to play Single Player on the first map, it crashes on the Loading Resources section of the progress bar. Here is some of the exception information the system prints out: Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS) Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x000000001acec4d0 Crashed Thread: 4 When I ran it on the Windows side (Bootcamp), Windows 7 required me to give Garry's Mod some permissions. I wasn't asked to do this on the Mac side. Maybe that's it? Is there some kind of special setup for the Mac?

• TFS2010 - Correctly setting up Host Header

  We have a TFS2010 install on a Win2008R2 Server running IIS7. I've created a host header for TFS and want to use that instead of machineName:8080. I am getting weird behavior from it now. Every other time I log in I get: TF31002: Unable to connect to this Team Foundation Server: http://web2/tfs. Team Foundation Server Url: http://web2/tfs. Possible reasons for failure include: - The name, port number, or protocol for the Team Foundation Server is incorrect. - The Team Foundation Server is offline. - The password has expired or is incorrect. Technical information (for administrator): The request failed with HTTP status 404: Not Found. I force a reconnect and voila - there it is. Also, connecting to the web site rarely works but connecting via VS2010 works 50% of the time. What do i need to change to stabilize this?

• Google local search rankings is it possible without the use of citations

  I have a client that is wanting a website design for his self-run business... Basically he is a self employed plumber so his home address is not visitable by the public, however the problem here is that he does not want his home address visible on the internet at all for one reason or another. I have informed him the benefits of having his address visible for such reasons as trust by customers as well as the benefits via Google's local search algorithms (Citations - Visible Address Details) on various directories including Google Maps, and Google Places. But he is clear that he does not want his address online and wants SEO + Web Design without any citations. Now, I care about my reputation in my local area and do not like do half-cut jobs, If I do SEO I want them to be the best they can otherwise word of mouth that customer could say to someone else after my services they are no where to be seen, (I know you can't keep them all happy but none the less). This is kinda new for me since Google introduced local rankings and something I've never had to do... So my question is fairly simple and hope that people who reply have some kind of experience in attempting ranking websites locally without citations.. Is it even possible to rank a local website with Google's local algorithms without the use of citations (address information)?

• Branded Application Pages (layouts pages) in SharePoint 2010

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Application pages are now branded by default in SharePoint 2010. WOOHOO!!! The DynamicMasterPageFile attribute in SharePoint 2010 master pages allows application pages start using the site’s master page instead of the application master page. If you want backwards compatibility with SharePoint 2007, i.e. you want unbranded application pages, here is what you can do, a) You can change the MasterPageReferenceEnabled property to false in your SPWebApplication object, orb) Go to central administration\application management\manage web application\select your web app … go to the ribbon, look for general settings\general settings, and detach application pages from the site’s master page. Safeguarded application pages Now for the fine print, there is something called as “Safeguarded application pages” in SP2010. These are pages, that IF IN CASE your custom master page screws up, they will automatically revert to use a master page that is guaranteed to work in the _layouts folder. Now that’s nice!   This is a follow up to my previous post WPF Databinding- Not your fathers databinding Part 1-3 you can download the source code here  http://ssccinc.com/wpfdatabinding.zip Example 04   In this example we demonstrate  the use of default properties and also binding to an instant of an object which is part of a collection bound to its container. this is actually not as complicated as it sounds. First of all, lets take a look at our Employee class notice we have overridden the ToString method, which will return employees First name , last name and employee number in parentheses, public override string ToString()        {            return String.Format("{0} {1} ({2})", FirstName, LastName, EmployeeNumber);        }   in our XAML we have set the itemsource of the list box to just  “Binding” and the Grid that contains it, has its DataContext set to a collection of our Employee objects. DataContext="{StaticResource myEmployeeList}"> ….. <ListBox Name="employeeListBox"  ItemsSource="{Binding }" Grid.Row="0" /> the ToString in the method for each instance will get executed and the following is a result of it. if we did not have a ToString the list box would look  like this: now lets take a look at the grid that will display the details when someone clicks on an Item, the Grid has the following DataContext DataContext="{Binding ElementName=employeeListBox,            Path=SelectedItem}"> Which means its bound to a specific instance of the Employee object. and within the gird we have textboxes that are bound to different Properties of our class. <TextBox Grid.Row="0" Grid.Column="1" Text="{Binding Path=FirstName}" /> <TextBox Grid.Row="1" Grid.Column="1" Text="{Binding Path=LastName}" /> <TextBox Grid.Row="2" Grid.Column="1" Text="{Binding Path=Title}" /> <TextBox Grid.Row="3" Grid.Column="1" Text="{Binding Path=Department}" />   Example 05   This project demonstrates use of the ObservableCollection and INotifyPropertyChanged interface. Lets take a look at Employee.cs first, notice it implements the INotifyPropertyChanged interface now scroll down and notice for each setter there is a call to the OnPropertyChanged method, which basically will will fire up the event notifying to the value of that specific property has been changed. Next EmployeeList.cs notice it is an ObservableCollection . Go ahead and set the start up project to example 05 and then run. Click on Add a new employee and the new employee should appear in the list box.   Example 06   This is a great example of IValueConverter its actuall a two for one deal, like most of my presentation demos I found this by “Binging” ( formerly known as g---ing) unfortunately now I can’t find the original author to give him  the credit he/she deserves. Before we look at the code lets run the app and look at the finished product, put in 0 in Celsius  and you should see Fahrenheit textbox displaying to 32 degrees, I know this is calculating correctly from my elementary school science class , also note the color changed to blue, now put in 100 in Celsius which should give us 212 Fahrenheit but now the color is red indicating it is hot, and finally put in 75 Fahrenheit and you should see 23.88 for Celsius and the color now should be black. Basically IValueConverter allows us different types to be bound, I’m sure you have had problems in the past trying to bind to Date values . First look at FahrenheitToCelciusConverter.cs first notice it implements IValueConverter. IValueConverter has two methods Convert and ConvertBack. In each method we have the code for converting Fahrenheit to Celsius and vice Versa. In our XAML, after we set a reference in our Windows.Resources section. and for txtCelsius we set the path to TxtFahrenheit and the converter to an instance our FahrenheitToCelciusConverter converter. no need to repeat this for TxtFahrenheit since we have a convert and ConvertBack. Text="{Binding  UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged,            Path=Text,ElementName=txtFahrenheit,            Converter={StaticResource myTemperatureConverter}}" As mentioned earlier this is a twofer Demo, in the second demo, we basically are converting a double datatype to a brush. Lets take a look at TemperatureToColorConverter, notice we in our Covert Method, if the value is less than our cold temperature threshold we return a blue brush and if it is higher than our hot temperature threshold we return a redbrush. since we don’t have to convert a brush to double value in our example the convert back is not being implemented. Take time and go through these three examples and I hope you have a better understanding   of databinding, ObservableCollection  and IValueConverter . • Installing software after .wim image

  I have been looking all day into how to install software to a .wim image. I have a .wim image of a laptop that will be deplyed to 20 more. The image is pretty much good to go except I need to add a couple more drivers and a couple more applications. Is there a way to do this in the answer file? Do I have to deploy the image, install the drivers/application, sysprep, and recapture the image? Any information relating to this will be greatly appreciated. Leon ps I have only been using answer files and imagex. Would like to stick with this for the time being. I plan on using WDT and WDS when I have some time to learn about it.

• Linux Software RAID: How to fsck on hard drive?

  We have a Linux server running with Software RAID1. We see some issues in /var/log/messages like: unreadable sector. I want to perform a complete fsck on the drive to get some more information, but a fsck /dev/md0 brings a clean due to the Software RAID layer in between. How can I check the real hard drive? Do I need to disassemble the whole RAID? How do I deal with the inconsistency in the partition due to the additional Software RAID header? Does anyone have a good idea for this?

• Problem displaying tiles using tiled map loader with SFML

  I've been searching fruitlessly for what I did wrong for the past couple of days and I was wondering if anyone here could help me. My program loads my tile map, but then crashes with an assertion error.   Received a message from Google Webmaster Tools: Over the last 24 hours, Googlebot encountered 2 errors while attempting to retrieve DNS information for your site. The overall error rate for DNS queries for your site is 40.0%. You can see more details about these errors in Webmaster Tools. Recommended action Contacted HostPapa and they deny that there is any issue with the site / server!!! Support in terms of what I can do to actually resolve this issue is non-existent!!!! The site is currently online. And I don't know much about DNS... so any advice about what I can do to resolve this problem would be much appreciated.

• Unable to mount smb share. "Please select another viewer and try again". Please help. Serious smb/nautilus foo needed

  This don't think this is the typical, "I can't mount a windows share" post. I am using stock Ubuntu 12.04. I am pretty sure this is a Nautilus issue, but I have reached a dead end. I have one share that I can't mount using smb://server/share via nautilus. I get the following error. Error: Failed to mount Windows share Please select another viewer and try again I can mount this share from other machines(non-ubuntu) using the same credentials so I know I have perms on the destination share. I can mount other shares on other servers from my Ubuntu box so I am pretty sure I have all the smb packages I need on my Ubuntu box. To make thing more interesting, if I use smbclient from the command line, I mount this share with no problems from my Ubuntu box. So here's what we know: destination share perms are ok (no problem accessing from other machines) smb is setup correctly on Ubuntu box (access other windows shares no problem) I only get the error when using nautilus smbclient in terminal works, no problem Any help would be greatly appreciated. Googling turned up simple mount/perms issues, and I don't think that is what is going on here. Let me know if you need more information. Hugh

• AHCI and Memtest86+

  I've got a motherboard with SATA AHCI enabled, and I need to disable it to run Memtest86+ (because Window's built-in RAM diagnostic tool isn't worth a barrel of warm snot), and because the Memtest developers are too lazy to fix the bootloader problem. Fine, I know how to do that. The problem is, I, in a moment of insanity driven by the fact that I work with hardware RAID cards all the time, felt the need to enable the onboard RAID. In retrospect, this was stupid: the onboard raid is a joke, but I'm stuck with it. My question is, if I disable AHCI am I going to lose the RAID information? I haven't been able to find a definitive yes or no anywhere, and I'm not in the mood to find out the hard way.

I am very new to this subject and would like to read through some good tutorials, hands-on-lessons or whatever is out there to help newbies getting to know Shibboleth. But so far I have not been able to find any tutorials that contain specific examples for each steps. I would like to get a running setup up somehow so I will be able to play around with it... • Is HTML5/WebGL performance unreliable on low-end Android tablets and phones?

  I've developed a couple of WebGL games, and am trying them out on Android. I found that they run very slowly on my tablet, however. For example, a game with 10 sprites or so runs as 5fps. I tried Chrome and CocoonJS, but they are comparably slow. I also tried other games, and even games with only 5 or so moving sprites are this slow. This seems inconsistent with reports from others, such as this benchmark. Typically, when people talk about HTML5 game performance, they mention well-known and higher-end phones and tables. While my 7" tablet is cheap (I believe it's a relabeled Allwinner tablet, apparently with the Mali 400 GPU), I found it generally has a good gaming performance. All the games I tried run smoothly. I also developed an OpenGL ES 2 demo with 200 shaded 3D objects, and it ran at 50fps. My suspicion is that many low-end and white-label devices may have unacceptable HTML5/WebGL support, which means there may be a large section of gamers you will not reach when you choose this as your platform. I've heard rumors about inconsistent performance of HTML5 and WebGL on different devices, but no clear picture emerges. I would like to hear if any of you have had similar experiences with HTML5 or WebGL, or whether I can find information about the percentage of devices I can expect to have decent performance.

• Disk failure is imminent Laptop Hard drive ~5 months old

  There's another post about this, but I don't have enough 'points' to say anything on that thread. So I'll start my own ... with more details! My computer still boots, but gnome domain reports problems with HDD smart. This has been confirmed in the bios as it makes me press f1 to boot up now. I tried running HDD disk check in the bios, but it fails running the tests. As in, running the tests failed not that the tests themselves indicated a failed drive. • Installer doesn't display partition I want to install to

  While performing a Ubuntu 10.10 installation on my laptop, it doesn't show partitions pertaining to the PC. My PC configuration is as follows : HP Pavilion dv6 - 2020AX AMD Turion II Dual Core Mobile Processor M500 4 GB RAM OS Installed : Windows 7 500 GB Hard drive partitioned as follows : C : 227 GB (Free : 142 GB) D : 11.9 GB (Free : 1.98 GB) - Recovery F : 174 GB (Free : 18 GB) G : 50.5 GB (Free : 50.4 GB) So, I want to perform a Dual-boot installation on my PC, so that Ubuntu resides in the free disk space G:. Therefore, I started the Ubuntu 10.10 installation and select the manual partitioning feature in the installation. However, in the 'Allocate Drive Space' section of the installation, following partitions information is displayed: Partition Type Size Used /dev/sda /dev/sda1      1 MB    unknown /dev/sda2    ntfs    208 MB   unknown /dev/sda3   ntfs    244813 MB    168540 MB /dev/sda4    ntfs    255083 MB   3221 MB where /dev/sda - 500 GB So, what exactly is the problem? What is it should I do to install Ubuntu 10.10 in the G: disk space? Why are the partitions not being shown as the way they should be? Any Suggestions. Thank you for the help.
