• How do you write straight to the point documentation without looking sloppy and informal?

  I'm currently at a contract position and am looking to add to the documentation of the projects I worked on, to assist the next hiree taking over my projects. The documentation I received was overly technical (i.e. references code right away, references replacing certain values on certain lines, no high level description at all) How do I write documentation in simple plain English that is of actual benefit without looking sloppy? I find it difficult in areas such as outlining a system's flaws without coming off as judgmental, but still emphasize the severity of how detrimental some of the flaws are.

• Build My Own Advertising Network

  I have a few ideas that I think would be pretty game changing for online advertising and I would like to build my own network but I don't know where to start. I know it will take a lot of time for major publishers to get on board but I am more curious about the technical side. What language/database model and framework are modern ad networks built on? Basically I want to build an advertising network that registers views per page and allows publishers to manage the look of their own ads and let's the users interact with the ads. Is there any good information on doing something like this or any framework you can suggest to build on? I know this would get complicated pretty fast so if you have suggestions for ad networks that let you customize them heavily I would be glad to hear your suggestions.

• Is it possible to test a theory?

  We are a group of students who are working on a theory in software engineering (talking about the theory takes a lot of time so I just skip that). Implementing the theory is impossible, due to technical limitations, but it can be proven on a paper logically. We've been pushed to do a testing on it, so it can be proved that way too (although we bleieve that's not possible!), now: Basically, is it possible to test something like this? If it is, what type of testing should we use? I heard,its possible to handout a brief about it to some experts and asking about their opinion (not sure if that's true), is that a testing method? if it is, what does it called? and how exactly can be done?

• What's the best way to explain branching (of source code) to a client?

  The situation is that a client requested a number of changes about 9 months ago which they then put on hold with them half done. They've now requested more changes without having made up their mind to proceed with the first set of changes. The two sets of changes will require alterations to the same code modules. I've been tasked with explaining why them not making a decision about the first set of changes (either finish them or bin them) may incur additional costs (essentially because the changes would need to be made to a branch then if they proceed with the first set of changes we'd have to merge them to the trunk - which will be messy - and retest them). The question I have is this: How best to explain branching of code to a non-technical client?

• How to manage a growing team?

  I'm the admin assistant of the CTO and our organization has recently experienced a lot of growth. Within six months, we have merged with another organization and our Dev team has grown from 8 to 16, with another 8 people in QA. What we're dealing with now is a highly technical individual, with little patience, managing a much larger team than he's accustomed to, 40% of which is junior as well as an increase in the number of projects. Needless to say, my boss is being pulled in too many directions at once. How can I help him manage his workload and his team so that the team feels they're getting enough help and support and remain effective?   I'm planning on leaving my current job because we're locked into using Blub, with an enterprise Blub framework and a Blub-level web server, on mediocre shared hosting. My coworkers are friendly and my boss is an average small business owner - I want to leave entirely because of the technical reasons. I feel like being soaked in Blub is bad for my brain and making me a worse programmer. When I leave, how can I explain this to my boss and coworkers? • Is there any way to get faster app reviews?

  I am trying to build a business around an iPhone app. The app will be our main sales channel, and being able to adapt the sales channel faster than the 9-10 days delay cause by the app review times is crucial. Therefore, I was wondering whether there is anything I can do to improve the speed of reviews. I am thinking that the publishers of Angry Birds, surely would not have to wait in line for reviews on the same terms as some obscure free app. So what can I do? Some things I am considering: Would Apple prioritize apps that they earn money on? Could I in some way pay Apple directly? I already know of the possibility of requesting an expedite review, but it seems like one can get punished for supplying a non-technical reason.

• Adding PPA on install

  I have a app I am packaging for ubuntu. I don't like the idea that if included in the ubuntu repositories I will have no control over updating that application. I don't want my users stuck on an out dated version for up to 6 months. I also do not want my users to have to manually add a PPA themselves to get updates as the target user will not have the technical know how to do this. Is it OK to have my .deb add a PPA on install. So that I can roll out stable updates to my ubuntu users.

  Hi all, I used to be a technical lead in a group of 3-5 programmers. Tech lead's responsibilities here would include thinking of/designing overall solution architecture, coding, refactoring, being the first to dive into the next big thing, reviewing others' code, sitting on customer meetings and answering endless questions from the rest of the team. Now I'm moving on to a branch-level position (in a branch of ~60 people), which entails pretty much the same, sans maybe the coding/refactoring part. Still kinda a tech lead, but the title "tech lead" is already being used and means something else - a group-level tech lead. Please help me come up with a good job title. I need something for my e-mail signature and, eventually, resume.

  The next Kansas City SQL Saturday is coming up on August 4th.  We’ll have the usual SQL Saturday goodness: lots of technical sessions, great networking events and a fantastic speaker dinner.  And we’ll have the Third Annual Kansas City SQL Saturday BBQ Crawl.  On Friday afternoon we’ll visit a few BBQ places in town.  We tend to order big sampler plates and just share everything around.  It’s a great way to try a variety of styles.  This year we’ll be hitting an all new selection of BBQ joints. • The field for entering password freeze if no text is enter quickly after i install cinnamon on 12.04

  Iam a total newbie to Ubuntu . I installed Cinnamon through terminal . The problem is that when i boot up, if i don't enter the password before 1 or 2 minutes the password field will freeze and won't accept any text inputs.The problem was most likely caused by Cinnamon because i guess the problem started after i tried to install some Cinnamon extensions. Please answer in non-technical way as far as possible. I will never go back to Windows whatever be the outcome. Help me stay on to Ubuntu.

• What are good Software Project Management Texts / Resources?

  I'm looking for ideas and resources pertaining to software project management, specifically resources that I can direct project managers to in order to broaden their knowledge of the subject. So for example an obvious choice here would be The Mythical Man Month - I do think that this would be an appropriate suggested first read for /some/, but not all. Probably for managers that arrive at the job with more of a management background rather than a technical one TMMM might be a bit 'heavy'. • How to fix slow wireless with Intel 4965 AGN? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Slow wireless with an Intel 4965 We run Ubuntu 12.04, 32bit, with the current kernel 3.2.27-generic on an MSI EX700. I've already added the 11n_disable=1 tweek, without whcih, wireless has been unusable. Now, it works OK, but speedtest shows: Windows XP - down 11.68mbps, up 2.07mbps Ubuntu 12.04 - down 2.06mbps up 2.0mbps We've disabled ipv6, tried static and dinamic IPs, tried both swcrypto=0 and swcrypto=1 options, none of whcih made any difference. The problem may be the symptom of high packet loss. For example, here's the output of iwconfig after booting and testing the speeds: wlan0 IEEE 802.11abg ESSID:"amu" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 00:78:9E:FA:32:C8 Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:off Power Management:off Link Quality=58/70 Signal level=-52 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:11 Invalid misc:3627 Missed beacon:0 I've posted a help request before with lots of technical info and outputs.

  Hi There, I have a background in computers and had done programming some seven years ago. Switched to becoming a technical writer (oops!). And now think I should jump ship again, back to being a programmer. Of course the natural course of action where I can spend say two whole years learning to code, might not be available any more. • Who owns the code, who owns the algorithm, who owns the idea?

  This question got me thinking what products of the programming effort belong to the employer, and what don't. The two extremes are (0) the code - it apparently belongs to the employer and (1) the learned personal and technical skills. But what is in between? Who owns the pseudocode/algorithm? Who owns the general idea of the algorithm? Who owns the know-how that such an algorithm may serve some useful purpose (e.g. on this site questions are values, as well as answers)? Also: Who owns an idea on the web?

• 12.04 Install on a HP dv9000 screen problem

  Installed 12.04 on a HP dv9000 laptop. First tried to install with a Windows partition; then tried to install and move files from windows but not have a dual boot; then tried to install and have 12.04 have the system all to itself. The install was done off a burned CD... All went well. On reboot - it takes a while to come up the user ID and password challenge. After providing input screen renders and then turns black... First time Ubuntu user/installer - not technical :-)... Thanks for any help... I'll keepon digging in parallel.

• Asus A8N-SLI soundcard/headphone not recognized/working

  I have an Asus A8N-SLI with built-in sound-card which in the front has headset connection. Alsamixer V1.0.25 says Card: HD-Audio Generic Chip:ATI R6xx HDMI. Only option it gives is S/PDIF nothing else. I can only select the Generic sound-card others are not available. It seems it is not being recognized by Ubuntu. My technical skills are limited and I have searched for similar problems but could not find a solution. Any help in how to proceed forward is therefore greatly appreciated. I also have a windows focus problem with Gnome3 and Unity for which I will make a new question. Between those two problems it works like a charm as always. Though I'm only going to upgrade the laptop to 12.04 if I have the desktop running smoothly.

• How do I fix this half screen problem?

  I just installed 12.04, and my entire screen is being displayed entirely on the top half of my screen. The bottom half is always black or some technical garbage from the boot up. To interact with the bottom half of the screen I have to move the mouse over the screen to pull part of the bottom half of the screen on top and vice-versa. Does anyone know how to fix this?
