• Best scaling methodologies for a highly traffic web application?

  We have a new project for a web app that will display banners ads on websites (as a network) and our estimate is for it to handle 20 to 40 billion impressions a month. Our current language is in ASP...but are moving to PHP. Does PHP 5 has its limit with scaling web application? Or, should I have our team invest in picking up JSP? Or, is it a matter of the app server and/or DB? We plan to use Oracle 10g as the database.

  When creating a project with the webapp archetype in Maven, they subtly advise not putting any Java source in the webapp project by not including the "src/main/java" folder. What do you name your Maven projects? project-webapp for the project that contains the JSP, CSS, Images, etc. project for the project that contains domain specific entities ? for the project that contains the web application files like Servlets, Listeners, etc. My first inclination would be to use "webapp" for the project containing the web application files (Servlets/Listeners), however the archetype uses "webapp" to convey the JSP/CSS/Images project and would cause confusion to other developers.

  I am going to install and administrate a virtual server for a small university. The server should run inside a virtual machine (VirtualBox OSE). It is only used in the university network and is invisible to the outside world. It should run Apache web server for PHP, MySQL and probably a mail server. I don't know which OS to use. Main criteria for choosing include ease of administration and updating, package management and performance. I wonder if anyone has any suggestions? And candidate OSs are: Debian, Ubuntu, CentOS, Slackware, FreeBSD, OpenSolaris. Add any other OS if you know any better alternatives.

• Where would async calls make sense in an ASP.net (MVC) Web Application?

  I'm just wondering, if I have an ASP.net Web Application, either WebForms or MVC, is there any situation where doing stuff asynchronously would make sense? The Web Server already handles threading for me in that it spins up multiple threads to handle requests, and most request processing is rather simple and straight forward. I see some use for when stuff truly is a) expensive and b) can be parallelized. but these are the minority cases (at least from what I've encountered). Is there any gain from async in the simple "Read some input, do some CRUD, display some output" scenario?

• What to do if you were scammed by a web hosting company? [on hold]

  I was recently scammed by a web hosting company. Is there anything i can do about it? I would like to sue them but that doesn't sound realistic to me since they are not based on the same country as me. I would like to at least be able to have them blacklisted or something so other people don't get scammed too. I would appreciate if you can tell me how to proceed in these cases. They promise 24/7 support which is not true because its only one guy managing the whole thing and your server can go down for days and he doesn't do anything, he wont even reply your tickets. My server is been offline for over a week now and he only ignores me. I paid for this month and shortly after that my server went offline. I used Paypal to pay. He is in Bulgaria (that's what he says) i'm in Japan. I paid $55 USD.

• How to read log4j output to a web page?

  I have a web page, used for admin purposes, which runs a task (image fetching from a remote site). In order to be able to debug the task using the browser only, no ssh etc, I'd like to be able to read all log output from the executing thread and spit it out to the web page. The task boils down to: Changing log level for current thread at the beginning of the call and restore when the call is done. Reading all log output by current thread and storing it in a string. So in pseudocode my execute() method would look like this: (I'm using struts2) public String execute() throws Exception { turnLoggingLevelToDebugOnlyForThisThread() ... do stuff... restoreLoggingLevelForThisThread() String logs = readAllLogsByThisThread(); } Can this be done with log4j? I'm using tomcat, struts2, log4j and slf4j.

• My IP seems to be blocked by web hosting server...

  Hi All I have a strange problem, i just installed my php web site on a shared hosting, all services were working fine. But after configuring my app i just could visit my web site only once, other attempts gives "The server is taking too long to respond.". But from other IP i can access, but only once, it seems all ip addressess beeing blocked after first visit(even ftp and other services get down, no access at all from the IP), can anyone help to explore this problem ? i don't think that it's my app problem, the app works fine on my local PC. • Does changing web hosts (changing a domain's nameservers) affect the private nameservers / glue records created under that domain?

  We currently have a virtual dedicated server with GoDaddy and have 4 domains under it. I ended up creating private nameservers under, say mydomain_a.com, and have ns1.mydomain_a.com and ns2.mydomain_a.com as the nameservers for the other 3 domains. Now, we're thinking of switching web hosts (not domain registrar just the host) which means I have to change mydomain_a.com's nameservers to the new host. Will that affect or mess with the other 3 domains still pointing to ns1.mydomain_a.com and ns2.mydomain_a.com? Will that affect the private nameservers / glue records in anyway?   I'm in the process of installing an open-source Python based web application to an internal server here at work. The existing code is open - it doesn't require a login to view it - but one of the requirements is that users have to be approved before they can see anything. Is there a good way (using Apache configuration files for example, but any method would be great) to wrap the application so that any access requires a login? I would like to avoid modifying the open-source code (a maintenance nightmare every time a new release comes out). Any thoughts or suggestions?

• What is the best way to back up dedicated web server? (Amanda versus Rsync)

  Hello everyone, I am trying to establish valid back ups for my web server. It is a linux box on CentOS. I have asked around and "rsync" was suggested by some of the server fault community. However, my coworker at work says that this is really only moving over the physical files and isn't really a usable "snapshot." He suggested using "amanda" and that this did full server snapshots that are more what I am accustomed to. I know at my company we have virtual machines that we take snapshots of and we can restore everything back to just as they were with little effort and little downtime. Is this possible with rsync? Or would I need to create a new server and then migrate the files back and do various configurations? I think I prefer being able to just reset everything to a point in time. Forgive my ignorance, Back ups are something that I have never really had to worry about before.

  Hi, I want a web-based OS with a torrent client and I want to link it to one of the many free cloud storage solutions. I think it would be really cool to be able to check and download torrents anywhere and not use my hardware or connection until I want to transfer the files down to my actual desktop (like burning a Linux ISO or to convert the file to a IFO format). Anywyas, I created accounts at 4Shared, EyeOS, GlideOS, ADrive and iCloud and am having no luck. There is an eyeTorrent app but I can't seem to get it configured and I can't log into my cloud storage from the cloud OS. Has anyone been able to pull this off and if so would you please explain how?   I am designing a piece of software that needs to operate different pieces of hardware based mainly on a schedule but it also needs to have a web interface for configuring settings, configuring the schedule, and possibly even manually controlling the hardware. I'm not sure how to design the architecture of software like this. One thought that I have had was to create a Windows service that does the communication with the hardware as well as "publishing" web services through WCF and then having an ASP.NET application that then controls the Windows service through WCF. This approach seems to be a lot of work for what I'm trying to accomplish. Could someone please give me some direction whether or not this is a good approach, and even give me a better way to do it if one exists? Thanks! Joel

  Not sure if this is an excessively broad and newbie-ish question for Stack Overflow but here goes: I paid someone else to build a web application for me and now I want to tweak certain aspects of it myself. I learn best by trial and error – changing stuff and seeing what happens. Obviously that's not a great way to treat a live site, so I need to duplicate the site on some kind of test server which I can play with without fear of the consequences. Unfortunately the closest I've come to programming has been creating ActionScript-based websites. I've never touched a database. So I really don't know where to start with setting up a test server. I would really appreciate any advice about where to start. I am completely ignorant and lost here. The web application is built in python/django using a Postgresql database. I use Mac OS X 10.6 if that makes any difference.

  I am aware of passing data between jsp in spring web flow. Is it possible to transfer data between html pages driven by spring web flow. I don't want to use the HTML5 local storage capabilities. Example: Page 1: Search box for an employee id. Page 2: Search result for the employee details. Two ways that I could think: Get the employee details in page 1 by ajax and pass the result to the page two. Pass the employee id to page 2 and get the result by ajax in onload. I have no educational background in the field (was trained as a fine artist and tutor), but in the past few years have progressed fully self-taught (and self-motivated) from html to css to php, mysql, jquery, and am now building rich web applications.   I've been running my own dedicated server running CentOS and a LAMP stack for 2-3 years now, but it's only been hosting my own websites which aren't super important. However, I will soon be setting up a Linux Webserver and Linux Database Server at work, and I'm wondering what are some important things I should be doing. It's an internal server only, so only people in the company can access it. Should I get a slave server for both of my servers for backups? If I do this, how many backups should I be keeping and how often should those backups be done? Right now on my current server I run a cron job nightly to backup my MySQL databases (Usually 40mb files once compressed), and bi-weekly cron jobs to backup my web root. I just store these files on my local computer via FTP. Also, for an internal server like this, should I look at using LightHTTPD or NginX to increase performance, or will Apache be fine?

• Why are my DNS Lookups so long (300+ms) when accessing my web site?

  I'm running a Fedora 11 server with Apache 2. I'm trying to optimize so things are as fast as possible from the server side, and I'm noticing (via Firebug for Firefox) that upon loading the homepage of one of the sites on the web server that for every file it loads (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, GIF, PNG, JPG, etc.), it does a DNS lookup. All of the files it is looking up are local to the server, so I'm surprised to see it even do a DNS lookup. Also, each of these lookups is in the 150-450ms range, which is way too high for my liking. I've tried adjusting /etc/resolve.conf to use Google's Public DNS servers. I restarted the network service and tapped the page again, but the numbers didn't go down. I've reverted back to the default DNS servers since I didn't see any gain. Any ideas on what is causing it to: a) do the dns lookup in the first place, and b) take so long when doing the actual lookup? Thanks in advance.

  The problem doesn't seemed to have anything to do with Hibernate. As I've commented the Hibernate stuff but I'm still getting it.
