  • Using Git with TFS projects

    If you having been following the updates to CodePlex over the last several months you will have noticed that we added support for Git source control. It is important to the CodePlex team to enable developers to use the source control system that supports their development style whether it is distributed version control or centralized version control. There are many projects on CodePlex that are using TFS centralized version control. But we continue to see more and more developers interested in using Git. Last week Brian Harry announced a new open source project called Git-TF. Git-TF is a client side bridge that enabled developer to use Git locally and push to a remote backed by Team Foundation version control. Git-TF also works great for TFS based projects on CodePlex. You may already be familiar with git-tfs. Git-TFS is a similar client side bridge between Git and TFS. Git-TFS works great if you are on Windows since it depends on the TFS .Net client object model. Git-TF adds the ability to use a Git to TFS bridge on multiple platforms since it is written in Java. You can use it on Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows, etc. Since you are connecting to a TFS Server when using Git-TF make sure you use your CodePlex TFS account name: snd\YOUR_USERNAME_cp along with your password.   • What kind of redirect (301 or 302) for an email links tracker?

    We are developing an email sending application ("à la" Mailchimp). Hyperlinks inserted by our users, in the emails they want to send, are replaced by a tracking URL on our application (https://ourdomain.com/trackingurl?blablabla) which then redirects the email reader to the original URL our users included in their emails. This allows us to record statistics about link clicks. Until now, we used 301 for those redirections, but we noticed that Google began indexing pages on our application which are in fact redirects to other domains. (The title and snippet in Google results are from the other domain, but the link in green is from our application). We took action by adding those urls to our robots.txt, but Google seems to take forever (months!) before removing them for its index and removing them by hand in Webmaster Tools would take a lot of time since there are lot. I would like to know which kind of HTTP redirect (301 or 302) is best suited for this kind of opreation ? Do you think switching to 302 redirects could improve this situation since we don't really want Google to index redirected links from our clients emails ?

  • I want to make "stuff" on the web, is a BsC. in Computers necessary/overkill? [on hold]

    I'm 24 and have a lead role in a major news outlet in my country, with a good pay and public image in the horizon. I hold a job that was previously held by people with 15-20 years of experience and considered one of the top 5 news anchors in my country. My passion though, is computers. The web, to be precise. I was a problogger at a very young age. I hacked my way through CSS and some basic HTML and PHP. But I want to move forward - I want to CREATE not just STRUCTURE things. Giving up the present (and especially the seemingly promising future) in my current industry is hard, my friends raise their eyebrows... I'm considering a BsC. in computer Engineering - but my stats are short of getting into a good university for this discipline. Plus, I'm not the best with math - although I do exceptionally well in statistics and other numbers that are more applicable to real life. I tried learning PHP through online websites, but that just "doesn't cut it" for me. Nope. So what are my options here? if I don't want to build hardware or and deal with overly-complex algorithmic but would like, for example - to build a well functioning iPhone and iPad app, or a SaaS, a startup...do I have to go the BsC. route? I don't see any option to get an "official" education in strictly "web" concepts and languages.. Note: I'm well off financially, so I'm doing this more to be able to create stuff, rather than get a job in a corporations. Although if I land somewhere high, that might be an option. But my main concern is getting the tools.

    Here are the notes for this week’s release: Pull Requests We’ve added the ability to see the snippets of code where a user commented inline in the discussion of pull requests. You can also add another line comment directly from the discussion area, rather than navigating to the code diff viewer. Note that there’s currently a known issue where the line associated with the comment isn’t being properly differentiated for existing pull requests (the line in the middle of each diff preview should be bolded). Apologies for the inconvenience! As part of this work, we also took some time to clean up our diff viewer UI to remove the dots and introduce a new color scheme where green is used for added lines. Bug Fixes Fixed an issue affecting the ability to assign pull requests. Fixed an issue where managing various team resources for a project was not working in Chrome or Firefox. Fixed an issue where a project’s RSS subscribe dialog popped up in the wrong place. Fixed an issue where editing wiki anchor links would insert extra characters, resulting in broken links. Fixed an issue where project logos did not display correctly when browsing the site with https in Chrome or Firefox.   • Website only displays correctly in IE using compatibility mode?

    As the resident "IT Whiz" at work (ie: I know how to use a computer) I've been asked to develop a website for our small business. I've altered a wordpress theme for the time being and the company is very happy with the results. The only problem I am having with it at the moment is that for some reason the website does not display correctly and Internet Explorer unless I run it in Compatibility Mode. The main problem that I have is that my menu "slider" (it rotates pictures with links to articles etc) does not display at all, neither does the top menu they are just blink text based links. Even with Compatibility Mode enabled the slider and menus come back but the page is not centered unlike on both Firefox and Chrome. My googling has suggested the most common cause of this is old code but I'm not sure where to be looking. Is it likely in the css file or the actual php? Also any ideas on how to trouble shoot the cause of this? As in is there some dev tools or debugger I can use that would highlight "broken" code for me?

  • Is it justified to use project-wide unique function and variable names to help future refactoring?

    Refactoring tools (like ReSharper) often can't be sure whether to rename a given identifier when, for example refactoring a JavaScript function. I guess this is a consequence of JavaScript's dynamic nature. ReSharper solves this problem by offering to rename reasonable lexical matches too. The developer can opt out of renaming certain functions, if he finds that the lexical match is purely accidental. This means that the developer has to approve every instance that will be affected by the renaming. For example let's consider we have two Backbone classes which are used completely independently from each other in our application: var Header = Backbone.View.extend({ close: function() {...} }) var Dialog = Backbone.View.extend({ close: function() {...} }) If you try to rename Dialog's close method to for example closeAndNotify, then ReSharper will offer to rename all occurences of Header's close method just because they are the same lexically prior to the renaming. To avoid this problem, please consider this: var Header = Backbone.View.extend({ closeHeader: function() {...} }) var Dialog = Backbone.View.extend({ closeDialog: function() {...} }) Now you can rename closeDialog unambiguously - given that you have no other classes having a method with the same name. Is it worth it to name my functions this way to help future refactoring?

  • Should my web app have its own domain name?

    I'm going to get a domain name for my personal web page. It will contain my blog, photos and other personal stuff, plus different web apps and tools that I'm working on. I have put quite a lot of work in one of the web apps, and I think it has great potential. It covers a niche in a way that no other page has done before and I can see great possibilities to expand it. Via links to webstores and ads I think it could even make some money, and if I play it right this could be the place to go when you're into the specific niche that it covers (sorry for being so vague). My question is, would it be better for a (potentially great) web app like this to have its own domain name (nameofmyapp.com) instead of being a subpage of my personal page (mypersonaldomain.com/nameofmyapp)? Is the web app more likely to be found by others, via Google etc, with its own domain name? Could a "subpage" give more attention (visitors) to my personal page? pros and cons?

  • CentOS drive mapping? [on hold]

    This is the first time I am posting on this particular StackExchange forum and I hope that I am using the right one for the present question. Briefly, this is what I need to do I am running a web service where users can, amongst other things, upload and store files on the server. What I want to do is to hive off user file storage to a different location so my server (CentOS 64 bit) can concentrate on what it does best - server side scripting and database management. As things stand all user files go into subdirectories in a folder called stash that lies above DOC_ROOT. What I would like to do is Transparently detect all attempts to read/write to stash/sub_folder and get/set file data on a remote server - ideally the latter would be one which replicates files like a CDN so they can be delivered from the closest/fastest location based on where the user's location. Even nicer would be if for all read accesses I could provide a URL that allows the user's browser to fetch the relevant file directly without having to funnel them via my server. I am a relative newbie when it comes to this sort of thing so I hope that I have phrased this question adequately well. From the little searching I done I gathered that WebDAV can be used to map drives to a different location on the web so perhaps that is a starting point. But if that will work I need to Establish how to get WebDAV up and running on my CentOS 64 bit server. Ideally, identify a service that allows this kind of file storage and provides an API I can use in my own scripting. I'd much appreciate any help with this.

  • Installed geany has no options

    I'm new to geany IDE. I installed geany from ubuntu software centre, and the window has no options other than opening a new file. I can't file any preference, tools option too for configuring. I heard it is a full fledged IDE. Also, from the screenshots available from the software center, it seems my Geany installation is missing almost everything. I'm not able to post the screenshots, but my interface just has 3 buttons. create a new file, open an existing file and a quit button. Everything else is inactive. I accidentally closed the sidepane, and I can't find any options to bring back that too. EDIT What am I missing in my Geany installation? PS: I tried installing from source from geany website. But, it posted some error saying GTK files not found. But, I removed geany from software centre and reinstalled several times. It installed Geany without problems, but with afore mentioned problems, that is I have nothing in my interface. Also, even after reinstalling, somehow Geany remembers to hide the sidepane by default, which I'm not able to see at all. I also added Geany ppa repository manually for latest fixes, but still when I reinstall from software centre I get a plain blank Geany interface. Thanks.

    Have you accidently deleted files from TFS and are looking at a way to undelete the file? You don’t have to undo your previous check in to get the files back, there is a simpler way. 01 – View Deleted items in Team Explorer Have you been wondering how you can view deleted items in Team Explorer? Well, go to tools, options, Source Control. From Visual Studio Team Foundation check ‘show deleted items in the Source Control Explorer’.  02 – Undelete files from TFS Simply right click the deleted file or folder and from the context menu select ‘Undelete’. This will roll back the files to the version before the delete operation was committed on them.  The undeleted changes now show up as pending changes in your workspace. You need to right click the folder and select Check In Pending changes from the context menu to restore the files. Add a comment and check in the files back to TFS to undelete them Right click the folder and view history. You’ll see both the check in that deleted the file/folder and the check in that restored it. So, that’s how you can restoring deleted files in TFS… Nice and simple… Right?

  • Upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 now no network access

    A few weeks ago I decided I should enter the Linux world and read that Ubuntu is the most widely used release. I installed version 11.10 and it worked perfectly. Just this past week I decided I would do the upgrade to 12.04. The upgrade process itself worked fine. However, when I logged in I no longer had a network connection. I am running an AMD-based PC with a D-LINK DFE-530TXS network card and as I said, it worked fine in 11.10. I have scoured the Internet and come across a thousand slightly varying solutions, but they are too convoluted for someone new to Linux. Not because I can't follow the steps, but because most of the tools/utilities that are referenced (e.g. to compile, install, etc.) are not available when I use the stated steps in the solutions. So....should I re-install 11.10 or is there hope in getting this version to use the NIC that I know works. I have the latest driver from d-link for my NIC but I have no idea how to 'install' it for Ubuntu 12.04 to use. I know you will require additional information, but I wasn't sure what you would need.   • Live HTML Preview

    When you need to edit an HTML document in NetBeans you may find useful this little plugin that adds a Preview tab to HTML editor window. The plugin works with some small issues in NetBeans 7.4 but I recommend using development builds instead. So install the plugin, restart NetBeans and open any HTML document. Notice there's a Preview button in editor's toolbar (see the red rectangle in the picture below). Now split the editor window by dragging the split button at top right corner. You can also use menu View - Split - Vertically.  Then in the bottom split part toggle Preview button. You will get a live preview of your HTML source code. The preview pane will auto-refresh as you edit the HTML code. There are even some handy tools in Preview toolbar, for example you can resize the preview browser to match the screen dimensions of various device types. I know there is full-blown HTML5 support in NetBeans 7.4. But if you need to edit a single document or when you're running Java-only NetBeans distribution this plugin may come handy... Note: The plugin is built on top of embedded WebKit browser which is based on JavaFX WebView component. So there might be some issue when using the plugin on some flavors of Linux.

    What does a company need to offer you (apart from a fat pay cheque) for you to work for them? I am aware of this question, which is from an employer's perspective. I am interested in your views as employees. To get the discussion started, here is a list off the top of my head (not in any particular order): High-end computer with a huge screen or two. The best software tool money can buy as per Joel's test). That isn't too much to ask given many of the best tools are free (think git). Flexibility is a bonus- if a particular platform/ piece of software is not absolutely required, I would like to pick my OS and IDE. A quality chair Quiet workspace. Open plan is fine as long as there are meeting rooms so that there is no constant chatter going on around me. Spacious workspace. I would rather have more than three inches between my mouse and the person next to me's keyboard. Food and drink at work. Many companies these days have fruit baskets, biscuits, etc available to their employees, some even offer free lunch. Education. If my employer wants my skills to stay up-to-date, they should at the very least understand I need time to learn. If they want to pay for my books and conference registration fees, I am more than happy to accept. Other options include organizing internal knowledge exchange days or inviting speakers from outside. Flexible hours/ option to work from home is a bonus

    This is the situation: Working on (the next version of) a Unity quicklist editor, I would like to add a reliable way of "restarting" launcher icons. To do so, I need to remove the icon (editing gsettings) and replace it on the same position. So far no problem. However, if the application in question is running, user will possibly lose data, as the application will quit when it's icon is removed from the launcher. What I need is a reliable way to find an application's process name, to let the editor check in the list of running processes if the application is running, and send a warning message to the user that the icon can not be restarted if the application is running. What i did so far is make the editor look into the desktop file, to read the command, also read the command, stripped from the directory section, and furthermore look into possible remote scripts the desktop file command might refer to, looking for strings starting with "./" Although te method seems to work well with all applications I tested it on, I have the feeling there must be an easier way to cover the problem in an "all in one" way... Is there? also suggestions to catch more exceptional situations are welcome!

  • Growing your VirtualBox Virtual Disk

    Don't you just hate it when this happens: Fortunately, if you're running inside VirtualBox, you can resize your virtual disk and magically make your guest have a bigger disk very easily. There are 2 steps to doing this... 1. Resize the virtual disk Use the VBoxManage command line tool to extend the size of the Virtual Disk, specifying the path to the disk and the size in MB: VBoxManage modifyhd <uuid>|<filename> [--type normal|writethrough|immutable|shareable| readonly|multiattach] [--autoreset on|off] [--compact] [--resize <megabytes>|--resizebyte <bytes>]   If you booted up your guest at this point, the extra space is seen as an unformatted area on the disk, like this: So we now need to tell the guest about the extra space available. 2. Extend the guest's partition to use the extra space How you do this step depends on you guest OS type and the tools you have available. Linux guests often include the excellent gparted partition editor, whereas Windows 7 and 8 provide the Computer Management tool which can resize partitions. Unfortunately, my Windows XP vm has no such tool. But I do have a couple of other options: Most Linux installable .isos include the aforementioned gparted tool, so I could simply attach, say, an Ubuntu.iso as a Virtual CD/DVD in my Windows XP vm and boot off that. Then use gparted to extend the Windows XP partition, before finally rebooting. But I took another route and attached my resized virtual disk to a Windows Server 2012 vm I had lying around. Then I used the Computer Management tool in Windows Server 2012 to extend the partition of the Windows XP disk, before shutting down, unplugging the disk and reattaching to my Windows XP vm. (Note that if your vm's use different disk controllers, Windows will check the disks on booting). When I finally boot up my Windows XP guest I see the available disk space and all is well.     I have seen some sites using a different kind of SEO to promote copyrighted materials such as movies. They also have submitted their site to Google webmaster tools but still now did not get banned. Their Alexa ranks are 7000 or less. On the other hand I have run 5 movie affiliate sites and all of them got banned by Google within a short period of time. I have copied the url of the homepage of solarmovie.me and pasted it on the google search and instead of the homepage url I have seen that their category or tag shows as the homepage (www.solarmovie.me/watch-category/hollyw... Now is solarmovie.me publishing its posts as a single page or something else? I tried to find out what kind of SEO or coding that was, but I couldn't since I have very little knowledge about coding. Also I have seen the same thing with ALLUC.TO in google search (www.alluc.to/popular-links.html). Could anyone please help with the SEO of this kind so that I don't get banned by google frequently or index removed. All SEO webmaster i need your help!!!!     What is the best method using SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services) to upload a file to either a remote SFTP (secure FTP with SSH2 protocal) or FTPS (FTP over SSL) site? I've used the following methods, but each has short-comings I would like to avoid: COZYROC LIBRARY Method: Install the CozyRoc library on each development and production server and use the SFTP task to upload the files. Pros: Easy to use. It looks, smells, and feels like a normal SSIS task. SSIS also recognizes the password as sensitive information and allows you all the normal options for protecting the sensitive information instead of just storing it in clear text in a non-secure manner. Works well with other SSIS tasks such as ForEach Loop Containers. Errors out when uploads and downloads fail. Works well when you don't know the names of the files on the remote FTP site to download or when you won't know the name of the file to upload until run-time. Cons: Costs money to license in a production environment. Makes you dependent upon the vendor to update their libraries between each version. Although they already have a 2008 version, this caused me a problem during the CTP's of 2008. Requires installing the libraries on each development and production machine. COMMAND LINE SFTP PROGRAM Method: Install a free command-line SFTP application such as Putty and execute it either by running a batch file or operating system process task. Pros: Free, free, and free. You can be sure it is secure if you are using Putty since numerous GUI FTP clients appear to use Putty under the covers. You DEFINATELY know you are using SSH2 and not SSH. Cons: The two command-line utilities I tried (Putty and Cygwin) required storing the SFTP password in a non-secure location. I haven't found a good way to capture failures or errors when uploading files. The process doesn't look and smell like SSIS. Most of the code is encapsulated in text files instead of SSIS itself. Difficult to use if you don't know the exact name of the file you are uploading or downloading. A 3RD PARTY C# or VB.NET LIBRARY Method: Install a SFTP or FTPS library and use a Script Task that references the library to upload the files. (I've never tried this, so I'm going to guess at the pros and cons) Pros: Probably easy to capture errors. Should work well with variables, so it would probably be easy to use even when you don't know the exact name of the file you are uploading or downloading. Cons: It's a script task combined with .NET libraries. If you are using SSIS, then you probably are more comfortable with SSIS tasks then .NET code. Script tasks are also difficult to troubleshoot since they don't have the same debugging tools and features as regular .NET projects. Creates a dependency on 3rd party code that may not work between different versions of SQL Server. To be fair, it is probably MORE likely to work between different versions of SQL Server than a 3rd party SSIS task library. Another huge con -- I haven't found a free C# or VB.NET library that does this as of yet. So if anyone knows of one, then please let me know!

  • WCF timeouts are a nightmare

    We have a bunch of WCF services that work almost all of the time, using various bindings, ports, max sizes, etc. The super-frustrating thing about WCF is that when it (rarely) fails, we are powerless to find out why it failed. Sometimes you will get a message that looks like this: System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException: The socket connection was aborted. This could be caused by an error processing your message or a receive timeout being exceeded by the remote host, or an underlying network resource issue. Local socket timeout was '01:00:00'. --- System.IO.IOException: Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. The problem is that the local socket timeout it's giving you is merely an attempt to be convenient. It may or may not be the cause of the problem. But OK, sometimes networks have issues. No big deal. We can retry or something. But here's the huge problem. On top of failing to tell you which precisely which timeout (if any) resulted in the failure ("your server-side receive timeout was exceeded," or something, would be helpful), WCF seems to have two types of timeouts. Timeout Type #1) A timeout, that, if increased, would increase the chance of your operation's success. So, the pertinent timeout is an hour, you are uploading a huge file that will take an hour and twenty minutes. It fails. You increase the timeout, it succeeds. I have no no problem with this type of timeout. Timeout Type #2) A timeout which merely defines how long you have to wait for the service to actually fail and give you an error, but modifying the value of this timeout has no impact on the chance of success. Basically, something happens during the first second of the service request which mucks things up. It will never recover. WCF doesn't magically retry the network connection for you. Fine, sometimes establishing a network connection doesn't go well. But, if your timeout is 2 hours, you have to wait 2 whole hours with no chance of it ever working before it finally acknowledges that it didn't work and gives you the error. But the error you see in both cases looks the same. With timeout Type #2, it still looks like you are running into a timeout. But, you could increase all of your timeouts to 4 years, and all it would do is make it take 4 years to get an error message. I know that Type #2 exists because I can do an operation that is known to complete in less than a minute when successful, and have it take 2 hours to fail. But, if I kill it and retry, it succeeds quickly. (If you are wondering why there might be a 2 hour timeout on an operation that takes less than a minute, there are times I run the operation with a much larger file and it could take over an hour.) So, to combat the problem with Type #2, you'd want your timeout to be really quick so you immediately know if there is a problem. Then you can retry. But the insurmountable problem is that because I don't know which timeouts are the cause of failure, I don't know what timeouts are Type #1 and which ones are Type #2. There may be one timeout (let's say the client-side send timeout) that acts like Type #1 in some cases and Type #2 in others. I have no idea, and I have no way of finding out. Does anyone know how to track down Type #2 timeouts so I can set them to low values without having to shorten actual (read: Type #1) timeouts and lower the chance of success? Thank you.

  • Mercurial hg clone on Windows via ssh with copSSH issue

    I have a Windows Server 2008 machine (iis7) that has CopSSH set up on it. To connect to it, I have a Windows 7 machine with Mercurial 1.5.1 (and TortoiseHg) installed. I can connect to the server using PuTTY with a non-standard ssh port and a .ppk file just fine. So I know the server can be SSH'd into. Next, I wanted to use the CLI to connect via hg clone to get a private repo. I've seen elsewhere that you need to have ssh configured in your mercurial.ini file, so my mercurial.ini has a line: ssh = plink.exe -ssh -C -l username -P #### -i "C:/Program Files/PuTTY/Key Files/KyleKey.ppk" Note: username is filled in with the username I set up via copSSH. #### is filled in with the non-standard ssh port I've defined for copSSH. I try to do the command hg clone ssh://inthom.com but I get this error: remote: bash: inthom.com: command not found abort: no suitable response from remote hg! It looks like hg or plink parses the hostname such that it thinks that inthom.com is a command instead of the server to ssh to. That's really odd. Next, I tried to just use plink to connect by plink -P #### ssh://inthom.com, and I am then prompted for my username, and next password. I enter them both and then I get this error: bash: ssh://inthom.com: No such file or directory So now it looks like plink doesn't parse the hostname correctly. I fiddled around for a while trying to figure out how to do call hg clone with an empty ssh:// field and eventually figured out that this command allows me to reach the server and clone a test repo on the inthom.com server: hg clone ssh://!/Repos/test ! is the character I've found that let's me leave the hostname blank, but specify the repo folder to clone. What I really don't understand is how plink knows what server to ssh to at all. neither my mercurial.ini nor the command specify a server. None of the hg clone examples I've seen have a ! character. They all use an address, which makes sense, so you can connect to any repo via ssh that you want to clone. My only guess is that it somehow defaults to the last server I used PuTTY to SSH to, but I SSH'd into another server, and then tried to use plink to get to it, but plink still defaults to inthom.com (verified with the -v arg to plink). So I am at a loss as to how plink gets this server value at all. For "fun", I tried using TortoiseHg and can only clone a repo when I use ssh://!/Repos/test as the Source. Now, you can see that, since plink doesn't parse the hostname correctly, I had to specify the port number and username in the mercurial.ini file, instead of in the hostname like [email protected]:#### like you'd expect to. Trying to figure this out at first drove me insane, because I would get errors that the host couldn't be reached, which I knew shouldn't be the case. My question is how can I configure my setup so that ssh://[email protected]:####/Repos/test is parsed correctly as the username, hostname, port number, and repo to copy? Is it something wrong with the version of plink that I'm using, or is there some setting I may have messed up? If it is plink's fault, is there an alternative tool I can use? I'm going to try to get my friend set up to connect to this same repo, so I'd like to have a clean solution instead of this ! business. Especially when I have no idea how plink gets this default server, so I'm not sure if he'd even be able to get to inthom.com correctly. PS. I've had to use a ton of different tutorials to even get to this stage. Therefore, I haven't tried pushing any changes to the server yet. Hopefully I'll get this figured out and then I can try pushing changes to the repo.
