• Implementing "Generator" support in a custom language

  I've got a bit of fettish for language design and I'm currently playing around with my own hobby language. (http://rogeralsing.com/2010/04/14/playing-with-plastic/) One thing that really makes my mind bleed is "generators" and the "yield" keyword. I know C# uses AST transformation to transform enumerator methods into statemachines. But how does it work in other languages? Is there any way to get generator support in a language w/o AST transformation? e.g. Does languages like Python or Ruby resort to AST transformations to solve this to? (The question is how generators are implemented under the hood in different languages, not how to write a generator in one of them)

• Multithreading in Lua

  I was having a discussion with my friend the other day. I was saying how that, in pure Lua, you couldn't build a preemptive multitasking system. He claims you can, because of the following reason: Both C and Lua have no inbuilt threading libraries [OP's note: well, Lua technically does, but AFAIK it's not useful for our purposes]. Windows, which is written in mostly C(++) has pre-emptive multitasking, which they built from scratch. Therefore, you should be able to do the same in Lua. The big problem i see with that is that the main way preemptive multitasking works (to my knowledge) is that it generates regular interrupts which the manager uses to get control and determine what code it should be working on next. I also don't think Lua has any facility that can do that. My question is: is it possible to write a pure-Lua library that allows people to have pre-emptive multitasking?

• Overuse of guards in Erlang?

  Hi, I have the following function that takes a number like 5 and creates a list of all the numbers from 1 to that number so create(5). returns [1,2,3,4,5]. I have over used guards I think and was wondering if there is a better way to write the following: create(N) -> create(1, N). create(N,M) when N =:= M -> [N]; create(N,M) when N < M -> [N] ++ create(N + 1, M). • Struts2 dynamic form elements

  Hi, I would like to create little higer-level framework on top of Stuts2 which can take form element description from Action and render a complete form, in order to avoid having a separate JSP files with hardcoded form elements for every form in a large web application (so if I manage to do this I will have just a few generic JSPs for data form and few for layout). Application is extremely data-driven. My idea is to create form description using custom objects in the Action (i.e. Button, TextInput etc.) and then to create a single JSP page that will render eveything out. What is the best way of doing this? Can you propose some concrete way to do this? I don't want to write something if I can reuse the existing code with some effort. Any ideas are appreciated.   I have written a macro that uses Application.OnTime that works if I manually execute the macro. I'm trying to automate this process so I don't have to write Application.OnTime in "This Workbook" or (Private Sub Workbook_Open() Most of you do this because you can have windows scheduler open the workbook at a certain time which starts the macros on open. I CANNOT USE SCHEDULER. Because I am not able to use windows scheduler I will keep the workbook open and the timer should refresh my data then Call "my Macro" at a certain time everyday. Where do I place this code, and how do I set an auto timer?

  I'm very new to RTMP streaming and am seeking help. Just enough to get me started. I have been Googling for about 5-7 hours now and still cannot determine my answer! The documentation of Red5 is limited and cannot find any support at all! Even similar questions to mine are unanswered on stackoverflow :( My questions are: Why can't I simply place an .mp3 inside red5's server root and play it? To serve a simple MP3 file over RTMP. Do I need to write a Java application? If so, any pointers? To make matters worse, I have little to none Java experience. Please help ST.

  I have a directory where our deployments go. A deployment (which is itself a directory) is named in the format: <application-name>_<date> e.g. trader-gui_20091102 There are multiple applications deployed to this same parent directory, so the contents of the parent directory might look something like this: trader-gui_20091106 trader-gui_20091102 trader-gui_20091010 simulator_20091106 simulator_20091102 simulator_20090910 simulator_20090820 I want to write a bash script to clean out all deployments except for the most current of each application. (The most current denoted by the date in the name of the deployment). So running the bash script on the above parent directory would leave: trader-gui_20091106 simulator_20091106 Any help would be appreciated.

• Bash script "read" not pausing for user input when executed from SSH shell

  I'm new to Bash scripting, so please be gentle. I'm connected to a Ubuntu server via SSH (PuTTY) and when I run this command, I expect the bash script that downloads and executes to allow user input and then echo that input. It seems to just write out the echo label for the input request and terminate. wget -O - https://raw.github.com/aaronhancock/pub/master/bash/readtest.sh | bash Any clue what I might be doing wrong? • Include static file in JSP with variable filename on WebSphere 6

  I'm struggling with including a static file into my JSPs on Websphere 6.0.2.17. I tried this: <% final String MY_DIR = ResourceBundle.getBundle("mybundle").getString("props.pages.wcm"); %> <% final String page = ResourceBundle.getBundle("mybundle").getString("page"); %> <% final String inc = MY_DIR + "/" + bonus; %> <%@include file="<%= inc %>"%> The path is /wcm/some/other/dir/page and I can happily print that out with out.write(inc). Unfortunatly the include (and the jsp:include) isn't including the file at all. There is no error message, but the content isn't included... The file is accessible via the browser though. Do I have to create a full JSP for this to work? I just need a HTML file.

  Is there a way to reverse the SQL Like operator so it searches a field backwards? For example, I have a value in a field that looks like this "Xbox 360 Video Game". If I write a query like below, it returns the result fine. SELECT id FROM table WHERE title like "%Xbox%Game%" However, when I search like this, it doesn't find any results. SELECT id FROM table WHERE title like "%Video%Xbox%" I need it to match in any direction. How can I get around this?

• Is testability alone justification for dependency injection?

  The advantages of DI, as far as I am aware, are: Reduced Dependencies More Reusable Code More Testable Code More Readable Code Say I have a repository, OrderRepository, which acts as a repository for an Order object generated through a Linq to Sql dbml. I can't make my orders repository generic as it performs mapping between the Linq Order entity and my own Order POCO domain class. Since the OrderRepository by necessity is dependent on a specific Linq to Sql DataContext, parameter passing of the DataContext can't really be said to make the code reuseable or reduce dependencies in any meaningful way. It also makes the code harder to read, as to instantiate the repository I now need to write new OrdersRepository(new MyLinqDataContext()) which additionally is contrary to the main purpose of the repository, that being to abstract/hide the existence of the DataContext from consuming code. So in general I think this would be a pretty horrible design, but it would give the benefit of facilitating unit testing. Is this enough justification? Or is there a third way? I'd be very interested in hearing opinions.

• Multipart question: Mapping between xml and Json using xpath

  This is a JSON mapping question from a json newbie. Currently i'm reading xml using xpath in C#, and the xpath are returning either the element or attribute node values, as is the schema's want. I want to write out some of the returned values into a json formatted file. I know i can faneigle the xpath expression to return the element or attribute names, so I can built the appropriate name/value json structure before serialization, but I was I'm wondering if their was some way of doing a mapping between the xml and json. The xml schema is fairly big, so potentially the mapping will be big, meaning a ton of cumbersom coding to make it work. Is their any way to automap somehow? I was planning to use json.net, which seems flexible enough, although their may be a better approach. Any help would be appreciated. Bob.

• ASP.NET Excel Export formatting question

  Hey Guys, I've been banging my head on the wall over this issue for a couple days now and I need some help. I'm creating an excel file using ASP.net and everything is going just fine except one column has to be formatted as a decimal to 2 places but when it pulls into excel, excel automatically formats it as a whole number instead of keeping the decimal places. sw.Write(String.Format("{0:f}", CDbl(dr(14)).ToString("0.00"))) this produces "20.00" but when I open it in excel it's displayed as 20...if I select the whole column and format it as a number it gets displayed as 20.00 like it's supposed to but I don't want to have to do this (I can't do that) the file is supposed to be automatically picked up and imported into another system that needs the column to be a decimal. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

• Can I partition the C# System.Threading.ThreadPool?

  I love ThreadPool. It makes my life better. However, my love may have quietly turned into an abusive relationship that I need to escape from, so I need some advice from my SO brothers (and presumably sisters, although I haven't seen any actual evidence of that yet). My basic problem is that I have several different libraries that are all using the threadpool in an uncoordinated way, and running out of threads is a possibility. I was hoping there was some way I could partition the ThreadPool up so I could give a certain class 1 thread, another 20 threads, another 5 threads, and so on. I know I could write my own ThreadPool implementation. I don't want to do that, because I'm lazy. So, is there a simple solution already out there? Currently I'm constrained to using the 3.5 CLR. I know a lot of this stuff becomes easier in 4.0.

  My website uses a variety of technologies, such as JQuery, new CSS definitions (e.g., moz-selection, -webkit-user-select), etc. The site works perfectly with Google Chrome and Safari, but has some quirkiness in Firefox, IE, and some of the other browsers. I want to write a script to check for necessary browser features but, with several thousand lines of code and CSS definitions, I'm not certain which features I should be looking for. Is there some sort of online analysis (similar to how JSLint operates) that would tell me which features my script and CSS files need? Are there tools (like FireBug) that provide this info?
