• What are the differences between MSI and EXE installers, and which should I choose?

  I am working on an installer for a new version of my project (C#). Previously, I've used Inno Setup to create .exe files for installing my projects on other computers in the workplace. While reading through some tutorials, though, I came across Windows Installer XML, which uses XML files to build a .msi installer. My project will be available on a network share that all the employees have access to so they can install the software (I'm currently working on an update checker as well) What are the major differences between .exe and .msi installers? Why would I want to chose one over the other? Would either make more sense given my specific environment? I found some of the information at this question, but there was not a lot of information.

• Boost asio async vs blocking reads, udp speed/quality

  I have a quick and dirty proof of concept app that I wrote in C# that reads high data rate multicast UDP packets from the network. For various reasons the full implementation will be written in C++ and I am considering using boost asio. The C# version used a thread to receive the data using blocking reads. I had some problems with dropped packets if the computer was heavily loaded (generally with processing those packets in another thread). What I would like to know is if the async read operations in boost (which use overlapped io in windows) will help ensure that I receive the packets and/or reduce the cpu time needed to receive the packets. The single thread doing blocking reads is pretty straightforward, using the async reads seems like a step up in complexity, but I think it would be worth it if it provided higher performance or dropped fewer packets on a heavily loaded system. Currently the data rate should be no higher than 60Mb/s.

• Asynchronous operations performance

  One of the features of asynchronous programming in .NET is saving threads during long running operation execution. The FileStream class can be setup to allow asynchronous operations, that allows running (e.g.) a copy operation without virtually using any threads. To my surprise, I found that running asynchronous stream copy performs not only slower, but also uses more processing power than synchronous stream copy equivalent. Is there any benchmark tests were done to compare a synchronous vs asynchronous operation execution (file, network, etc.)? Does it really make sense to perform an asynchronous operation instead of spanning separate thread and perform synchronous operation in server environment if the asynchronous operation is times slower than the synchronous one?

  I'm having a lot of difficulty getting strophe's 'attach()' function working. I am working on a social network where users will be surfing pages and at the same time keep their chat connection on. I don't want to reconnect/reauthorize on every page so as per this link (http://groups.google.com/group/strophe/browse_thread/thread/430da5e788278f3a/93c48c88164f382f?show_docid=93c48c88164f382f&fwc=1) i am storing the SID and RID into a cookie onunload. On the next page when i try to use the new SID and RID (after incrementing it by 1) my session is already destroyed. Ejabberd reports "Error on HTTP put. Reason: bad_key" WTF is happening?

• IP Address Lookup in VB.net (XP vs Windows 7)

  Currently I use the following code to retrieve the IP address of the local workstation... strIPAddress = System.Net.Dns.GetHostEntry(strComputerName).AddressList(0).ToString() This is fine for the Windows XP workstations. However, in Vista and Windows 7, this returns the IPv6 address which is not used at all. Is there a method of setting this to work so it always returns the IPv4 address regardless of platform? I know I can increment the AddressList value to 1 and get the correct IP in Windows 7. The bad part is that this requires going through the motions of identifying the OS and choosing one or the other. The must be some way of specifying IPv4 only. Perhaps getting a result from DNS on the network rather than the workstation itself?

  I wrote a server based on Twisted, and I encountered a problem, some of the clients are disconnected not gracefully. For example, the user pulls out the network cable. For a while, the client on Windows is disconnected (the connectionLost is called, and it is also written in Twisted). And on the Linux server side, my connectionLost of twisted is never triggered. Even it try to writes data to client, but the connection is lost. Why Twisted can't detect those non-graceful disconnection (even write data to client) on Linux? How to makes Twisted detect non-graceful disconnections? Because the feature Twisted can't detect non-graceful, I have lots of zombie user on my server. Thanks. Victor Lin.

• Response.TransmitFile() with UNC share (ASP.NET)

  In the comments of this page: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/12s31dhy.aspx ..it says that TransmitFile() cannot be used with UNC shares. As far as I can tell, this is the case; I get this error in Event Log when I attempt it: TransmitFile failed. File Name: \\myshare1\e$\file.zip, Impersonation Enabled: 0, Token Valid: 1, HRESULT: 0x8007052e The suggested alternative is to use WriteFile(), however, this is problematic because it loads the file into memory. In my application, the files are 200MB, so this is not going to scale. Is there a method in ASP.NET for streaming files to users that's: scalable (doesn't read entire file into RAM or occupy ASP.NET threads) works with UNC shares Mapping a network drive as a virtual directory is not an option for us. I would like to avoid copying the file to the local web server as well. Thanks

  Hi, I am trying to write a small app to connect and manipulate some data on an SQL 2008 Express database. The database is on my local machine but I can see it on the network. I am trying to use LINQ to SQL in my app. I am trying to connect to the database so I can add database model to use with LINQ but the problem is I can not see any databases inside the SQL Server, which is on my machine. I tried using Windows Auth and also tried SQL Server Auth with no luck. Can someone please assist me? What am I missing?

• Handling two WebException's properly

  Hi Everyone, I am trying to handle two different WebException's properly. Basically they are handled after calling WebClient.DownloadFile(string address, string fileName) AFAIK, so far there are two I have to handle, both WebException's: The remote name could not be resolved (i.e. No network connectivity to access server to download file) (404) File not nound (i.e. the file doesn't exist on the server) There may be more but this is what I've found most important so far. So how should I handle this properly, as they are both WebException's but I want to handle each case above differently. This is what I have so far: try { using (var client = new WebClient()) { client.DownloadFile("..."); } } catch(InvalidOperationException ioEx) { if (ioEx is WebException) { if (ioEx.Message.Contains("404") { //handle 404 } if (ioEx.Message.Contains("remote name could not") { //handle file doesn't exist } } } As you can see I am checking the message to see what type of WebException it is. • Iphone: UIWebview and double taps

  I would like to trap a double tap event in a UIWebView. I have derived a class from UIWebController. When I double tap it seams that the UIWebController itself is responding to my double taps instead of my class. The weird thing is that when I change the inheritance to inherit from UIView everything works just fine. Below are snippets from my code which is supposed to invoke a pop-up when double tapped.   Specifically, I want to have my grails app under development to connect to an Oracle db defiined by an tnsnames.ora file. I have the tnsnames.ora file located in c:\drivers\Network\ on my PC. When I run the grails app via "grails run-war", the db connection string defined in the tnsnames.ora file doesn't seem to be picked up: grails prod run-war -Dserver.port=62215 -Doracle.net.tns_admin=C:\drivers\Netowrk\ It seems the name-value pair of oracle.net.tns_admin is not being passed to the JVM used by the the embedded Tomcat that comes with Grails 1.2.0. If not, what is the proper way of specify it, or pass any JAVA_OPTS to the underlying JVM?

• win7 amd64 guest in kvm does not have sound

  hi, my host system is gentoo amd64, guest system is win 7 amd64. the guest system can work, except it does not have sound. i start kvm with -soundhw ac97, QEMU_AUDIO_DRV='alsa', and after i get into the guest system, i can see a 'Multimedia Audio Controller' in the device manager. but win7 cannot find the driver for it. i searched the network for a long time, and i cannot find a driver for intel ac97 for win7 amd64. i also tried -soundhw sb16, es1370, none of them work. please help me fix this.

• SocketException preventing use of C# TCPListener in Windows Service

  I have a Windows Service that does the following when started. When running via a Console application it works fine, but once I put in a Windows Service I get the below exception. Here is what I have tried so far: Disabled the firewall, also tried adding explicit exclusions for the exe, port, and protocol Checked CAS Policy Config, shows unrestricted rights Configured the Service to run as an Administrator Account, Local System, Local Service, and Network Service, each with the same result Tried different ports Also tried 127.0.0.1 just to see... same issue This is wrecking my head, so any help would be greatly appreciated: The Code: var _listener = new TcpListener(endpoint); //192.168.2.2:20000 _listener.Start(); The resulting Exception: Service cannot be started. • MVC4 bundling GZIP and headers

  I'm testing my site with Google PageSpeed and YSlow and the bundles that i've created with MVC4 bundles aren't getting Gzipped (Compressing resources with gzip or deflate can reduce the number of bytes sent over the network) and there is no Vary: Accept-Encoding header (Instructs proxy servers to cache two versions of the resource: one compressed, and one uncompressed. This helps avoid issues with public proxies that do not detect the presence of a Content-Encoding header properly.) And also how can i add encoding header for the whole scripts folder on the ISS. I know there is HTTP Response Headers, then Add Custom HTTP Response Header, but will this work on the whole scripts folders and subfolders and what to put in the Name and Value fields. I tried to set : SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NONE) in {$ORACLE_HOME}\NETWORK\ADMIN\sqlnet.ora. It did not help. What's interesting is my coworker is able to execute the exactly same query successfully on his machine without a hitch. Any tips on how to fix this is greatly appreciated!!

  I am communicating with a server, each message sent to the server has to be padded with the length of the message, unsigned int len = htonl(msg.size()); In C running the length through htonl and padding the message works, in Java AFAIK byte order is already in network order so I assumed all I have to do is write the string length before the message to the stream, but this does not work am I missing something? stream.write(msg.length()); stream.write(msg.getBytes()); Stream is an OutputStream.

• Calling Web Page from Windows Service

  I have a Windows 2008 server. This has an instance of IIS7 installed and a website, accessible only via an internal hostname defined in the the servers hosts file. e.g. the server IP is 10.0.6.11 and the hosts file contains an entry 10.0.6.11 hl7.ourname.org I would like to call a URL on the website, e.g "http://hl7.ourname.org/updatestatus" from a Windows service. I can call the web site from an instance of IE7 running on the server. However, if try to call it from a Windows service I get a "Socket Error # 10061 Connection refused." This looks like a permission issue. The service is running as "Network Service" ,but maybe I should be running as a different user. Thanks

• Wireless card power management

  I have noticed that when my computer in plugged in, the wireless strength increases. I'm assuming this is to do with power management. Is there a way to disable Wireless Power Management? I have found a few blog posts that show hacks to disable this but what is best practice here? Should there not be an option via the power menu that lets you toggle this? • Alternatives to GameKIt for iPhone to iPhone transfer

  I am needing to transfer information as an NSData object from one iPhone to another inside an application and was originally planning on using Bluetooth/GameKit, but the data looks like it will be in the neighborhood of 500KB - 1MB in size. I don't think this is going to fly with GameKit (Bluetooth) as it will take forever and it seems like people are having all kinds of issues with GK anyway. I'd prefer the users to not have to be on the same WiFi network to make it work but am running out of options and time so I'd probably be happy with whatever works. What is a reasonable alternative? The simpler the setup the better or something with sample code would be greatly appreciated and preferred. Thanks.

• Windows Azure: Announcing release of Windows Azure SDK 2.2 (with lots of goodies)

  Earlier today I blogged about a big update we made today to Windows Azure, and some of the great new features it provides. Today I’m also excited to also announce the release of the Windows Azure SDK 2.2. Today’s SDK release adds even more great features including: Visual Studio 2013 Support Integrated Windows Azure Sign-In support within Visual Studio Remote Debugging Cloud Services with Visual Studio Firewall Management support within Visual Studio for SQL Databases Visual Studio 2013 RTM VM Images for MSDN Subscribers Windows Azure Management Libraries for .NET Updated Windows Azure PowerShell Cmdlets and ScriptCenter The below post has more details on what’s available in today’s Windows Azure SDK 2.2 release.  Also head over to Channel 9 to see the new episode of the Visual Studio Toolbox show that will be available shortly, and which highlights these features in a video demonstration. Visual Studio 2013 Support Version 2.2 of the Window Azure SDK is the first official version of the SDK to support the final RTM release of Visual Studio 2013. If you installed the 2.1 SDK with the Preview of Visual Studio 2013 we recommend that you upgrade your projects to SDK 2.2.  SDK 2.2 also works side by side with the SDK 2.0 and SDK 2.1 releases on Visual Studio 2012: Integrated Windows Azure Sign In within Visual Studio Integrated Windows Azure Sign-In support within Visual Studio is one of the big improvements added with this Windows Azure SDK release.  Integrated sign-in support enables developers to develop/test/manage Windows Azure resources within Visual Studio without having to download or use management certificates.  You can now just right-click on the “Windows Azure” icon within the Server Explorer inside Visual Studio and choose the “Connect to Windows Azure” context menu option to connect to Windows Azure: Doing this will prompt you to enter the email address of the account you wish to sign-in with: You can use either a Microsoft Account (e.g. Windows Live ID) or an Organizational account (e.g. Active Directory) as the email.  The dialog will update with an appropriate login prompt depending on which type of email address you enter: Once you sign-in you’ll see the Windows Azure resources that you have permissions to manage show up automatically within the Visual Studio Server Explorer (and you can start using them): With this new integrated sign in experience you are now able to publish web apps, deploy VMs and cloud services, use Windows Azure diagnostics, and fully interact with your Windows Azure services within Visual Studio without the need for a management certificate.  All of the authentication is handled using the Windows Azure Active Directory associated with your Windows Azure account (details on this can be found in my earlier blog post). Integrating authentication this way end-to-end across the Service Management APIs + Dev Tools + Management Portal + PowerShell automation scripts enables a much more secure and flexible security model within Windows Azure, and makes it much more convenient to securely manage multiple developers + administrators working on a project.  It also allows organizations and enterprises to use the same authentication model that they use for their developers on-premises in the cloud.  It also ensures that employees who leave an organization immediately lose access to their company’s cloud based resources once their Active Directory account is suspended. Filtering/Subscription Management Once you login within Visual Studio, you can filter which Windows Azure subscriptions/regions are visible within the Server Explorer by right-clicking the “Filter Services” context menu within the Server Explorer.  You can also use the “Manage Subscriptions” context menu to mange your Windows Azure Subscriptions: Bringing up the “Manage Subscriptions” dialog allows you to see which accounts you are currently using, as well as which subscriptions are within them: The “Certificates” tab allows you to continue to import and use management certificates to manage Windows Azure resources as well.  We have not removed any functionality with today’s update – all of the existing scenarios that previously supported management certificates within Visual Studio continue to work just fine.  The new integrated sign-in support provided with today’s release is purely additive. Note: the SQL Database node and the Mobile Service node in Server Explorer do not support integrated sign-in at this time. Therefore, you will only see databases and mobile services under those nodes if you have a management certificate to authorize access to them.  We will enable them with integrated sign-in in a future update. Remote Debugging Cloud Resources within Visual Studio Today’s Windows Azure SDK 2.2 release adds support for remote debugging many types of Windows Azure resources. With live, remote debugging support from within Visual Studio, you are now able to have more visibility than ever before into how your code is operating live in Windows Azure.  Let’s walkthrough how to enable remote debugging for a Cloud Service: Remote Debugging of Cloud Services To enable remote debugging for your cloud service, select Debug as the Build Configuration on the Common Settings tab of your Cloud Service’s publish dialog wizard: Then click the Advanced Settings tab and check the Enable Remote Debugging for all roles checkbox: Once your cloud service is published and running live in the cloud, simply set a breakpoint in your local source code: Then use Visual Studio’s Server Explorer to select the Cloud Service instance deployed in the cloud, and then use the Attach Debugger context menu on the role or to a specific VM instance of it: Once the debugger attaches to the Cloud Service, and a breakpoint is hit, you’ll be able to use the rich debugging capabilities of Visual Studio to debug the cloud instance remotely, in real-time, and see exactly how your app is running in the cloud. Today’s remote debugging support is super powerful, and makes it much easier to develop and test applications for the cloud.  Support for remote debugging Cloud Services is available as of today, and we’ll also enable support for remote debugging Web Sites shortly. Firewall Management Support with SQL Databases By default we enable a security firewall around SQL Databases hosted within Windows Azure.  This ensures that only your application (or IP addresses you approve) can connect to them and helps make your infrastructure secure by default.  This is great for protection at runtime, but can sometimes be a pain at development time (since by default you can’t connect/manage the database remotely within Visual Studio if the security firewall blocks your instance of VS from connecting to it). One of the cool features we’ve added with today’s release is support that makes it easy to enable and configure the security firewall directly within Visual Studio.  Now with the SDK 2.2 release, when you try and connect to a SQL Database using the Visual Studio Server Explorer, and a firewall rule prevents access to the database from your machine, you will be prompted to add a firewall rule to enable access from your local IP address: You can simply click Add Firewall Rule and a new rule will be automatically added for you. In some cases, the logic to detect your local IP may not be sufficient (for example: you are behind a corporate firewall that uses a range of IP addresses) and you may need to set up a firewall rule for a range of IP addresses in order to gain access. The new Add Firewall Rule dialog also makes this easy to do.  Once connected you’ll be able to manage your SQL Database directly within the Visual Studio Server Explorer: This makes it much easier to work with databases in the cloud. Visual Studio 2013 RTM Virtual Machine Images Available for MSDN Subscribers Last week we released the General Availability Release of Visual Studio 2013 to the web.  This is an awesome release with a ton of new features. With today’s Windows Azure update we now have a set of pre-configured VM images of VS 2013 available within the Windows Azure Management Portal for use by MSDN customers.  This enables you to create a VM in the cloud with VS 2013 pre-installed on it in with only a few clicks: Windows Azure now provides the fastest and easiest way to get started doing development with Visual Studio 2013. Windows Azure Management Libraries for .NET (Preview) Having the ability to automate the creation, deployment, and tear down of resources is a key requirement for applications running in the cloud.  It also helps immensely when running dev/test scenarios and coded UI tests against pre-production environments. Today we are releasing a preview of a new set of Windows Azure Management Libraries for .NET.  These new libraries make it easy to automate tasks using any .NET language (e.g. C#, VB, F#, etc).  Previously this automation capability was only available through the Windows Azure PowerShell Cmdlets or to developers who were willing to write their own wrappers for the Windows Azure Service Management REST API. I’m deliberately showing a scenario with a lot of custom options configured – including VHD image gallery enumeration, attaching data drives, network endpoints + firewall rules setup - to show off the full power and richness of what the new library provides. We’ll begin with some code that demonstrates how to enumerate through the built-in Windows images within the standard Windows Azure VM Gallery.  We’ll search for the first VM image that has the word “Windows” in it and use that as our base image to build the VM from.  We’ll then create a cloud service container in the West US region to host it within: We can then customize some options on it such as setting up a computer name, admin username/password, and hostname.  We’ll also open up a remote desktop (RDP) endpoint through its security firewall: We’ll then specify the VHD host and data drives that we want to mount on the Virtual Machine, and specify the size of the VM we want to run it in: Once everything has been set up the call to create the virtual machine is executed asynchronously In a few minutes we’ll then have a completely deployed VM running on Windows Azure with all of the settings (hard drives, VM size, machine name, username/password, network endpoints + firewall settings) fully configured and ready for us to use: Preview Availability via NuGet The Windows Azure Management Libraries for .NET are now available via NuGet. Because they are still in preview form, you’ll need to add the –IncludePrerelease switch when you go to retrieve the packages. The Package Manager Console screen shot below demonstrates how to get the entire set of libraries to manage your Windows Azure assets: You can also install them within your .NET projects by right clicking on the VS Solution Explorer and using the Manage NuGet Packages context menu command.  Make sure to select the “Include Prerelease” drop-down for them to show up, and then you can install the specific management libraries you need for your particular scenarios: Open Source License The new Windows Azure Management Libraries for .NET make it super easy to automate management operations within Windows Azure – whether they are for Virtual Machines, Cloud Services, Storage Accounts, Web Sites, and more.  Like the rest of the Windows Azure SDK, we are releasing the source code under an open source (Apache 2) license and it is hosted at https://github.com/WindowsAzure/azure-sdk-for-net/tree/master/libraries if you wish to contribute. • MS office word component runs only if the server is logged on with the same identity

  Hi I have a webservices running on a server, which converts word document into pdf using word automation. I have given a windows network user account in the identity tab on the MS Office word component using the DCOMCNFG.exe. I am getting below mentioned error Exception Message: The message filter indicated that the application is busy. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8001010A (RPC_E_SERVERCALL_RETRYLATER)) But, if I Remote Desktop into that server using the account mentioned in the components identity tab, then it works fine. If I logoff from that server then its giving the above error. Anyone got any idea!! Many thanks in advance
