• SEO: Is there a limit to how long titles/descriptions should be?

  I am trying to fill up title and meta description for my Tumblr blog. The way I will do that is via the themes. For the title, it isn't too much of an issue, I can just get the title for the post although some post types do not have titles. The main question is about the description. I am thinking of using the start of the body content. For now, there is no way to limit the length of body content. I wonder if its OK to have the whole body in the description? I have contacted Tumblr support to suggest that they have a way of creating limiting text length in their template tags.

  I wrote a website a while ago that is a little messy in how it does things. I used this CSS template and this equal height columns trick. I have not one but two container divs and I can't remember what they're doing. So I'm thinking of re structuring the thing from scratch, and possibly making use of the more "semantic" html5 tags like <nav> and so on at the same time. The question is: is there a better way to achieve a site structure with these properties: 2 equal height main columns (with widths as percentages of the available real estate, not explicitly stated) both a header and footer element that stretch the whole width of the total of the two main columns That allows the use of semantic html5 tags instead of meaningless divs

Also, is it considered bad practice if your code logic requires a mixture of supered and non-supered methods like the Javascript example below? • Handling SMS/email convergence: how does a good business app do it?

  I'm writing a school administration software package, but it strikes me that many developers will face this same issue: when communicating with users, should you use email or SMS or both, and should you treat them as fundamentally equivalent channels such that any message can get sent using any media, (with long and short forms of the message template obviously) or should different business functions be specifically tailored to each of the 3? This question got kicked off "StackOverflow" for being overly general, so I'm hoping it's not too general for this site - the answers will no doubt be subjective but "you don't need to write a whole book to answer the question". I'm particularly interested in people who have direct experience of having written comparable business applications. Sub-questions: Do I treat SMS as "moderately secure" and email as less secure? (I'm thinking about booking tokens for parent/teacher nights, permission slips for excursions, absence explanation notes - so high security is not a requirement for us, although medium security is) Is it annoying for users to receive the same message on multiple channels? Should we have a unified framework that reports on delivery or lack thereof of emails and SMS's?

  I am using a template which in the pages it allows me to add sidebars / more content under and above the content I want to pull from a category which is very helpful. If I create pages to display my categories content wont the page urls go in conflict with the category urls? By conflict I mean causing a duplicate content error? What I thought might help was to block from robots.txt the category urls of the blog ex. /category/books /category/music Would that be a good practice in order to avoid the duplicate content penalty? Any tips appreciated.

  I have a site that lists offers, promotions from other websites. Since the offers expire rather quickly I don't save them into my database. I see no point in having a page from 2010 about 30% discount on a certain brand of shoes which isn't availabe anymore. A visitor enters my website; He clicks on the "shoes" category; http://www.mysite.com/shoes/ Here he sees 20 available promotions from different online stores. He clicks on a promotion and gets to a page like this: http://www.mysite.com/shoes/promotions/prada Questions: I use the template promotions.php and list all the promotions. /promotions/prada/ /promotions/otherbrand/ .... What I do is use "noindex, follow" for the links. Is that a good idea? Or should I use rel="canonical" for the promotion page? How do you advise me to handle this from the SEO point of view?

  I was the lead developer of 2 moderately successful browser games quite a few years back, and plan on working on a new game soon. At the time, I wrote them in pure PHP (no template engine or anything of the sort). I'd like to start working on a new game, but have been out of the web development world for a while. Reading around, I hear a lot of good about Rails, Django, Node.js, etc., with which I have no experience (although I know my way around Python, Javascript, and the others quite well). So my question is the following- if I were to go in my old ways and go with PHP again, would I be making things hard for myself? Would picking something more "trendy" have a real impact on my development? In addition, does anyone have any pointers relating to specifically developing browser games with these more modern tools?

  I have a php template which has one index.php and all the different pages (content1.html, content2.html etc) are shown on the index.phppage. So for example I can open www.example.com/index.php?content1 and it will show the content1.html. Now what I would like is this: Often you see websites where the url is like: www.example.com/this-is-the-content I know how to do this with an exclamation mark like www.example.com/?content1 <-- here you just dont write the index.php. But how can I do an url name, which is completely different from the filename? For example www.example.com/this-is-some-page would show me the content of index.php?content1

• What are the benefits vs costs of comment annotation in PHP?

  I have just started working with symfony2 and have run across comment annotations. Although comment annotation is not an inherent part of PHP, symfony2 adds support for this feature. My understanding of commenting is that it should make the code more intelligible to the human. The computer shouldn't care what is in comments.   Is it better (memory, time (of developer), space) to use single model that is unwrapped and uses a single material or to break a model down into appropriate bits, each with their own smaller texture/material? Or does it depend on the target platform as to what is acceptable - ie PC vs tablet? An example: Say you have a typical house with a tiled roof. Model it, make sure everything is attached, unwrap the walls/roof so in your UV template the walls and roof would be in one texture file, side-by-side in say a 512x512 file. Model the roof/walls as separate objects, unwrap them individually and have two UV templates. You could then have a 256x256 file for each one.

  Over the years, I have created a lot of Personas, I've co-authored a new method for creating them, and I've given talks about best practices for creating your own, so when I saw a call for participation in the OpenPersonas project, I was intrigued. While Jeremy and Steve were calling for persona content, that wasn't something I could contribute -- most of the personas I've created have been proprietary and specific to particular domains of my employers. However, I felt like there were a few things I could contribute: a process, a list of interview questions, and what information good personas should contain. The first item, my process for creating data-driven personas, I've posted as a list of best practices. My next post will be the list of 15 interview questions I use to guide the conversations with people whose data will become the personas. The last thing I'll share is a list of items that need to be part of any good persona artifact -- and if I have time, I'll mock them up in a template or two.

• Using MLP, how to make a link to the according page in the other languages?

  Hi all, the question says it all, but here's a bit more detail: I help building a bilingual website using MLP on TextPattern. It's trivial to put a link to the top level page of another language, but how to put a link to the current page in another language? Eg. /en/contact should link to /de/kontakt (the same article in another language). I'm sure there are some variables somewhere that I could put into the template that would be filled with the correct links. Thankx in advance. :)

  Does anyone know how to write a macro for a special character? I know LibreOffice currently doesn't have a way to set a special character to a keyboard shortcut. However, I want to work around this with a macro. My plan is to create a macro for a special character then set a keyboard shortcut to that macro. Problem is I don't know the first thing about writing a macro. Any one have a template or something that works? I also know about the compose key, but I guess I am lazy and want to actually insert special characters with as few keys as possible.

What's the best way to handle the case where the lookup fails? One principle says you should avoid returning null values from functions. These lead to mistakes and AttributeErrors etc. later on in the file. Another idea is to have fetch_by_id raise a ValueError or similar if no user exists with that id. However there's a general principle that you shouldn't use exceptions for control flow, either, which doesn't help much. What could be done better in this case?

  Manually/Through UIOn the top link bar, click Site Settings.On the Site Management page, in the Customization section, click Apply theme to site.On the Apply Theme to Web Site page, select No Theme(Default) from the list.Click Apply.Through Scriptfunction Apply-SPDefaultTheme([string]$SiteUrl, [string]$webName){$site = new-object Microsoft.SharePoint.SPSite($SiteUrl)$web = $site.OpenWeb($webName)$theme = [Microsoft.SharePoint.Utilities.ThmxTheme]::RemoveThemeFromWeb($web,$false)$web.Update()$web.Dispose()$site.Dispose()}After looking in the SPTHEMES.XML file found in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\1033 folder, you do see there is a theme with a theme name of "none". Since there is no "default" theme in 2010. So make sure if you wanna reset it to default you know that there is no default, you need to select 'none' :)
