• A Look Inside JSR 360 - CLDC 8

  If you didn't notice during JavaOne the Java Micro Edition took a major step forward in its consolidation with Java Standard Edition when JSR 360 was proposed to the JCP community. Over the last couple of years there has been a focus to move Java ME back in line with it's big brother Java SE. We see evidence of this in JCP itself which just recently merged the ME and SE/EE Executive Committees into a single Java Executive Committee. But just before that occurred JSR 360 was proposed and approved for development on October 29. So let's take a look at what changes are now being proposed. In a way JSR 360 is returning back to the original roots of Java ME when it was first introduced. It was indeed a subset of the JDK 4 language, but as Java progressed many of the language changes were not implemented in the Java ME. Back then the tradeoff was still a functionality, footprint trade off but the major market was feature phones. Today the market has changed and CLDC, while it will still target feature phones, will have it primary emphasis on embedded devices like wireless modules, smart meters, health care monitoring and other M2M devices. The major changes will come in three areas: language feature changes, library changes, and consolidating the Generic Connection Framework.  There have been three Java SE versions that have been implemented since JavaME was first developed so the language feature changes can be divided into changes that came in JDK 5 and those in JDK 7, which mostly consist of the project Coin changes. There were no language changes in JDK 6 but the changes from JDK 5 are: Assertions - Assertions enable you to test your assumptions about your program. For example, if you write a method that calculates the speed of a particle, you might assert that the calculated speed is less than the speed of light. In the example code below if the interval isn't between 0 and and 1,00 the an error of "Invalid value?" would be thrown. private void setInterval(int interval) { assert interval > 0 && interval <= 1000 : "Invalid value?" } Generics - Generics add stability to your code by making more of your bugs detectable at compile time. Code that uses generics has many benefits over non-generic code with: Stronger type checks at compile time. Elimination of casts. Enabling programming to implement generic algorithms. Enhanced for Loop - the enhanced for loop allows you to iterate through a collection without having to create an Iterator or without having to calculate beginning and end conditions for a counter variable. The enhanced for loop is the easiest of the new features to immediately incorporate in your code. In addition to solving all the problems mentioned above, it allows you to add arbitrary methods and fields to an enum type, to implement arbitrary interfaces, and more. Enum types provide high-quality implementations of all the Object methods. Platform extensibility via Service Providers (ServiceLoader) - ServiceLoader interface dos late bindings of interface to existing implementations. JSR 360 represents a rare opportunity to consolidated and reintegrate parts that were duplicated in other specifications into a single specification, upgrade the APIs as well provide new functionality. The proposal is to specify a combined GCF specification that can be used with Java ME or Java SE and be backwards compatible with previous implementations. Because of size limitations as well as the complexity of the some features like InvokeDynamic and Unicode 6 will not be included. Additionally, any language or library changes in JDK 8 will be not be included. On the upside, with all the changes being made, backwards compatibility will still be maintained. JSR 360 is a major step forward for Java ME in terms of platform modernization, language alignment, and embedded support.   I'm doing a wordpress solution with BuddyPress and bbPress, where I need to display the five newest topics on the homepage, as if it was blog-entries, but it seems kind of hard to accomplish. I'm figuring I gotta do something with the activity stream, but it seems like the stream is based on the user who is currently logged in, which is not what I want. So what should I do? Use a nifty plugin that does the trick (maybe someone knows a plugin I don't know of, as I've already tried the bbPress Latest Discussion plugin) Hardcode a forum-activity loop into the page-template file, using the is_front_page() function? Is there a forum-activity hook, that display the latest forum topics sitewide? Thanks in advance

• How to restart RoR services after server has been rebooted

  Update I have been searching around to see what services would possibly need to be restarted in my project after reboot. One of them was thinking sphinx, which I finally got to the point where it logs: [Fri Nov 16 19:34:29.820 2012] [29623] accepting connections But I still cant run searchd or searchd --stop because there was no generated sphinx.conf file in the etc/sphinxsearch for more info refer to this open thread on thinking_sphinx after reboot I then turned to looking into restarting unicorn or thin based on some insight I got. The issue is when I check my gems I see one for thin AND unicorn. But when I try to start either one of them they have no file residing in etc/init.d/ where the nginx and sphinxsearch files reside... Would rebooting totally erase the files for an app server like thin or unicorn? We are hosted on Rackspace running ruby 1.9.2p290 rails (3.2.8, 3.2.7, 3.2.0) nginx/1.1.19 notice that there are gems for unicorn and thin but there is no unicorn.rb or thin.rb in my config folder for my app... I am still super lost if any one can give me some insight on some steps to take to figure this out I would really appreciate it. I made some modifications to a constants file in the config folder (changing some values for arrays that populated some drop down fields), but the app had to be rebooted before those changes would be recognized. The hosting is through Rackspace, we rebooted through the option on their site. I contacted them and checked the status of our server, the port is open and operational. The problem is the app is not running when you go to the address for the site. Then when I put in the ip address of the server it just says "Welcome to Nginx". But in a log files I see: [Thu Nov 15 02:34:37.945 2012] [15916] caught SIGTERM, shutting down [Thu Nov 15 02:34:37.996 2012] [15916] shutdown complete I am not very versed in server side set up. I have also never worked on a Rails project that had to have specific services started before the application will start. Any insight as to how to figure out what services need to be restarted and how to go about restarting them would be greatly appreciated. I feel kind of dead in the water at this point...   I'm trying to make a new gtk theme using the murrine engine, using Humanity (default in ubuntu 9.10) as a template. You can grab the code in http://github.com/tutuca/themes However, I found cumbersome the process of creating a new theme with it. There is no central starting point. The documentation of both, the engine options (gtkrc's and stuff), and general theming practices (the format of the index.theme files, folders, bla bla) is scarce, How to's and tutorials are often old or subject to lots of opinionated debate and results confusing (to me, having a web developer background, at least :-). So... I wanted to ask to the fellows gtk themers and artist out there: Which tools you use to create a new theme, and how does your average workflow looks like?

  In the Google Analytics ecommerce tracing script you must provide for every item and SKU code. I have this code for every product I'm selling and up until now I have always provided it in the _addItem method. But when reviewing that data in the ecommerce module of Google Analytics, I have no real, no readable data about my SKU sales. I know what product has been sold, due to the product name I provide. But when clicking through to the SKU-level, I know nothing more, since all I can see there are SKU codes. Is it possible and wise to replace the SKU code with the following template? "product-name colour-name size-name" This way, it should still be a unique field, but more readable afterwards.

  I've just been hired to be part of a group that is developing in C++. Before, I've been coding on and off at my job for the past 11 years (some C, some Fortran, some C++). The coding I've done was mostly maintaining and adding new features to one of our systems. The code, being 10 years old, did not contain all the modern C++ stuff. Lo and behold, my new job is filled with programmers with 5-10 years experience of pure coding and they all use the most modern aspects of C++ (C++11, template, lambda, etc, etc). They are expecting someone with that same experience... Well, I've been working for 15 years total but when I looked at their code, I couldn't understand half of it! :-| Anyone been in that situation? What would you recommend?

  I was referred here from stackoverflow as my question was apparently too broad. I'm working on a template, and I know using CSS is preferred over HTML tables for positioning... But, is it acceptable to get the best of both worlds and use table-like styles on my divs? For example: display: table; This not only helps solve the sticky footer problem, but it also avoids the pains associated with using floats. Somehow it feels dirty, but I can't logically explain why because it works without any "tricks" or ugly hacks, which is how it should be, right? Is this technically incorrect, or does it ultimately boil down to just a matter of opinion? ...Thoughts?

• handling a GET error properly

  I have a website that takes two primary get strings: ?type=GAME&id=SomeGameID ?type=SCENARIO&id=SomeScenarioID for reasons unknown, I have recently begun receiving requests for erroneous get strings from both Yandex and Baidu. They are always in the form of: ?type=GAME&id=SomeScenarioID None of my users are triggering these errors, so I am (sort of) confident that this is not due to an HTML template error somewhere on my part. There is also no HTTP_REFER showing up in the $_SERVER array, so I'm guessing these are direct requests from bad dbase data on their part. I see two options for dealing with these bad requests, and would like to know which is recommended... or if there are other, better options I have not thought of: simply 404 the request, since it is incorrect redirect the request to ?type=SCENARIO&id=SomeScenarioID because the scenario IDs are always valid, the breakage is due to asking for the wrong type.

• C# Tip - Rendering HTML in a Gridview cell

  Just a quick tip for working with the gridview in ASP.Net.  If your data column contains HTML text, you've probably seen something like this in your gridview after pulling the data: <font color="red">First Item</font><br/><font color="green">Second Item</font><br/><font color="blue">Third Item</font> To have the relevant column render in HTML, just go to your gridview property pages, find the column you need rendered in HTML, and click 'convert this Field into a TemplateField'.  The result is that as a template field, HTML within your bound data value will be rendered properly.  So our example above would transform into: First Item Second Item Third Item I primarily use this technique for enabling HTML content in comment fields, and to insert line breaks when building the data for these fields.   I'm developing a software to program a device. I have some commands like Reset, Read_Version, Read_memory, Write_memory, Erase_memory. Reset and Read_Version are fixed. They don't need parameters. Read_memory and Erase_memory need the same parameters that are Length and Address. Write_memory needs Lenght, Address and Data. For each command, I have the same steps in sequence, that are something like this sendCommand, waitForResponse, treatResponse. I'm having difficulty to identify which pattern should I use. Factory, Template Method, Strategy or other pattern.

• TFS 2008 to TFS 2010 moves and some issues

  There have been many things going on this year around TFS.  Most of them had to do with migrations (I don’t call them upgrades for the most part since it involved new hardware and such).  Many were implementations using the Conchango SfTS template (now EMC). But there were others that were CMMI or Agile 4.0. Everything would move just fine, no issues.  That was until you attempted to run Test Case Management or run the last configuration steps for Lab Management. There is an error that states a project is not ready to run or integrate with Test or Lab Management.  And while there was some documentation on how to adjust and update the Agile WITs to work with it, there was still some disconnect to making it work with CMMI. • KnockoutJS 2.3.0 - Uncaught Error: You cannot apply bindings multiple times to the same element.

I had some dynamically added DOM elements and re-applying bindings worked before. It always seemed like a workaround/hack, but now Knockout is telling me that I shouldn’t do it. The quick way to fix this is to use ko.cleanNode($(‘#id’) and this works. A different/possibly better way, as suggested by x0n might be to use templates and Knockout’s template binding (<script type=’text/html’>…</script>).   Thanks again to the StackOverflow community for quickly providing me with the solution.
