    I got interested in the Soviet space program and was interested to discover that the software on the Buran spacecraft circa 1988 was written in Prolog. Does anyone know what languages might have been used in earlier missions, especially the Mars PrOP-M rover missions of the early 1970s which were somewhat autonomous and could navigate obstacles? Edit My source for the Buran Prolog is this declassified document from the CIA site from May 1990. I couldn't find an OCR version, so here's the relevant quote from p. 0449: According to open-source literature, the Soviets used the French-developed programming language known as Prolog to develop on-board system software for the Buran vehicle...

    This is my code.... it speaks for itself. <?php define("html","<html>"); define("htmlEnd","</html>"); etc... etc... ?> What i'm trying to do is make a wrapper for html's tags so they won't be needed anymore. But i can't get any of the attributes for html elements to be defined in php. This again speaks for itself... i don't know any other way of saying this... i guess how would i make a other mark up language like html without any tags but still keep everything about html is what i'm trying to say.....

  • Is JScript dying? If so, where should I go? [closed]

    I recently poked around Google for a little bit, looking for information about coding JScript. It's very sparse, which surprised me -- it took a link to a link to find Microsoft's own reference, which appears to omit most if not all references to console-based scripting that extends past Javascript. I'm working with the console here, not a webpage, so input and output seems very different than what Microsoft explains. If JScript is dying (and it appears to be so), where do I go from here? VBScript? My options are limited because the computers I'm using this on are carefully patrolled for new software. JScript's similarity to JavaScript was the biggest reason I had chosen it for porting over some of my prior work. I'm specifically looking for, at best, a console scripting language that doesn't need any extra software on Windows XP or higher, that at least supports standard input, output, pause, and file manipulation, little else.

    I know lots of startups often go for practical, simple, efficient. So maybe tossing a Ruby program on a basic Apache server. Get some users up and running, etc. Then Ruby starts to not be fast enough, so they throw more servers at the problem? And load balancing or something? And then when stuff gets REALLY crazy, language changes, etc? I'm looking for someone who has cleanly and simply told their own company's story like this. Are there any good ones?

    I'm implementing lighting for a WebGL app but I'm not an artist so I don't know how to generate or where to obtain a list of materials with its values (diffuse, specular, ambient and shininess). I've been searching a lot but with no luck. Is there any list or DB I might have overlooked? Any common repository or something similar? Thanks in advance.     I code a lot both in C and C++ but did not expect C to be the second popular language, slightly behind Java! http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/index.html I'm curious as why, in this age of OOP, C is still all that popular? Note that 4 out of top 5 popular languages are all "modern" object-oriented capable languages. Now I agree that you can do OOP in C to some extend, but that's sort of painful and not quite elegant! (well at least compared to C++ I guess) So what makes C this popular? efficiency? being low-level? or the vast majority of libraries that already exist? ... or something else?

    There is a guy who calls himself c/c++ programmer, but what does he actually know? What knowledge about c++ does he have because there are so much to know about c/c++. So he knows the core language? He knows visual c++? He knows how to program with WIN API? He knows how to program in linux with gtk? Network programming? The real question is: What do you need to know, to be called a c/c++ programmer ,because I know c and I really do not feel like I own the power of programming... please illuminate my path.

    I'm looking at getting into 3D game development and am wondering what would be the best, quickest engine to get started with. I need to be able to develop on a Macintosh with it. I know Java, and PHP mainly but have worked in many others. At this point, I feel I can adapt to most languages quite easy. So the programming language doesn't really matter to me. I've sorta kinda tried unity in the past and wasn't all too fond of it, so it's kind of a "I can't find anything better" resort. I'm hoping with how open I am I will find something I like more.     First of all I'm 26 and I'm asking this question because I want to see how do you manage your time. Also I'm interested how do the programmers with a family(wife, several kids) manage their time. I'm asking this due the fact that I'm working aprox 7,5 hours at work (9 to 5), spent 1,5 hours on the way to/from workplace, and when I'm home I must cook/clean/etc and LEARN! And I have the impression that I don't have enough time to learn. Did you have a period similar in your life? To want to learn another language/improve your development/other skills? I saw here and on SO that there are a lot of peoples with +10k points, this in my mind means that they stay on blogs/forums more than 15 hours a day.   • What Java class should I use to represent a Vector?

    Does Java have a built-in Vector class suitable for handling collision detection / response? It should have methods like subtract(Vector v), normalize(), dotProduct(Vector v), ... It seems logical to use java.awt.Rectangle and java.awt.Polygon to calculate collisions. Would I be right to use these classes for this purpose? I understand collision detection; I'm only wondering what approach to it is idiomatic in Java. I'm new to the language and to application development in general.

    I want to start looking for jobs in great companies and I have four years of enterprise corporations development, three years with C#.NET and alomst one year with Ruby On Rails, JS, etc... But when I look up interview questions from Google, Amazon, Fog Creek, DropBox, etc... they are really targeted at students that are coming fresh out of college and still remember what was Dynamic Programming and Dijkstra algorithms ... but I don't! :( It has been a while for me ... If a I need a sort algorithm I would either Google it or there already is a library and method that does it for me. So what should I do? Do they realize that this guy is not coming from college and will ask more general questions about software architecture or nop! I should go back find my old Data structures book from the storage and read them? In that case wht books and language do you recommend to hone my skills?

  • Can all code be represented as a series of Map / Filter / Reduce operations?

    I have recently been refactoring large chunks of code and replacing them with Linq queries. Removing the language bias - Linq is essentially a set of Map / Filter and Reduce operations that operate on a sequence of data. This got me thinking, how far would I theoretically be able to take this. Would I be able to rewrite the whole code base into a series (or even a single) of Map / Filter and Reduce operations. Unfortunately I get paid to do useful stuff, so I haven't been able to experiment much further, but I can't think of any code structure that couldn't be re structured as such. Side effected code can be dealt with via monads.. Even output is essentially mapping memory addresses to screen addresses. Is there anything that couldn't be (theoretically) rewritten as a Linq query?

    Currently i have ubuntu 11.10 as an os and i want ubuntu 12.04 lts. I made a bootable usb stick with the program 'startup disk creator'. Everything went well (i choose the language, and then i choose ' install'), the purple screen with the title 'ubuntu' come up, it started loading too. After a time black screen come up with white letters last sentence was something like: panic occured, switching back to text. I tried it several times, the same thing happens. i tried to click on ' trying ubuntu from usb too, but it didn't work either . Please help me!

  • .htaccess mobile redirect issues

    I'm trying to set up a mobile redirect for a site with 2 subfolders, and I cannot get both to work at the same time. This is the structure of the site www.mysite.com/EN/ www.mysite.com/ES/ This is a bilingual site so each subfolder contains the files corresponding to each language version. Then I was using a 301 redirect, and setting up the index in /EN/ as the main index. Everything was getting redirected to it. I was using DirectoryIndex index.html Redirect /index.html http://www.mysite.com/EN/index.html and several Rewritecond to redirect mysite.com and old urls to the new URL. It worked fine before I decided to add a mobile version - m.mysite.com. I used the solution provided in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3680463/mobile-redirect-using-htaccess, and it redirects my mobile version properly, but now the desktop is both working. Besides, my mobile version must be bilingual as well.

I had a valid question, but since it contained critisism of one of the ubuntu teams, it got closed down. All I am after is a 100% translated ubuntu into my language. But my local team do not work, so this will not happen. So much for an open community. Well, I will think real hard next time I can help someone, and I will probably not. Since I can't get any help.   • How to get local point inside a body where mouse click occurred in box2d?

    I need to find out the point inside a body, lets say a rectangular object, where the mouse was clicked on. I'm makin a game where the force will be applied depending on where the mouse was clicked on the body. Any ideas? Will body.GetLocalPoint(b2vec2) work? I tried by passing the mouse coordinates when the click occurred when inside the body but if the body's position is (400,300) in world coordinates then for trace(body.GetLocalPoint(new b2vec2(mouseX,mouseY)).x); I get some value between 380 to 406 or something (eg. 401.6666666). I thought getLocalPoint will give something like x=-10 when clicked to the left of the centre of body or x=15 when clicked to the right. Language is As3 btw.

    I've been programming in PHP for about a year and am at the following stage: Have a good 'feel' for the language Can create CRUD applications competently Can utilize an MVC structure to allow for future expansion of code Using the points listed above, I've created a number of my own applications for practise - including but not limited to; a forum, social network etc. My question may be a little vague but should hopefully be answerable. I feel as though there isn't anything else I would need to know about PHP to allow me to create websites, though I'm sure I'm wrong. What advanced/complex PHP topics could I look at that have a real-world use and will allow me to enhance both my skill as a programmer and applications in general? Recently I've looked a lot more at javascript/jQuery allowing me to give my applications a richer user interface which has been a great learning experience and proving very useful.
