• One bigger Virtual Machine in Cloud

  I just setup virtual machines on one hardware with Vagrant (this is just a test environment, not production!). I want to use a Puppet to configure them and next try to setup OpenStack. I am not sure If I am understanding how this should look at the end. • OBJECT_Name parameters and dbid

  If you've been using SQL Server for a long time, you may have been used to using the OBJECT_NAME system function in the past - especially useful when converting table IDs into table names when querying sysobjects and sysindexes..... However, if you're an old-school DBA  - did you know since SQL 2005 service pack 2 it  accepts a  second parameter ? database_id.. For example, this can be used to summarize some useful information from sys.dm_exec_query_stats. • Does the ``-'' sign have meaning in rsyslog.conf

  Rsyslog is backwards-compatible with Syslog configuration files. The syslog.conf man page has: You may prefix each entry with the minus ``-'' sign to omit syncing the file after every logging. Note that you might lose information if the system crashes right behind a write attempt. Nevertheless this might give you back some performance, especially if you run programs that use logging in a very verbose manner. but I could not find aything about the - sign in man rsyslog.conf. What does rsyslog do when if reads - in the config file?

• Something eating space on OS drive

  I am facing low disk space issue from last few days. I checked with Restore,System Volume Information, $Recycled folders. But there is nothing which is occupying space. I had scanned my system for virus too. Total size of C: is 18 GB. But when I select all folders inside C: and query for used space, it shows 20+ gb space is used. I vacate space some how by deleting temp files, program's cache files, disk clean up etc up to (3 gb). And I ensured that no cache/temp files are recreated who can use the space again. Even after cleaning so much data, I am again facing low disk space issue. Something is eating disk space within 15-20 mins.

• Setting page parent to a private page in Wordpress 2.8

  I have a site developed in Wordpress 2.7 that makes extensive use of private pages as the parents of public pages. The private pages are never meant to be seen, they are just there to act as containers for the other pages. Since upgrading to Wordpress 2.8, it seems this isn't possible any more. Private pages no long show up in the drop box of pages I can use as a parent, and if I edit a page with a private parent, it loses the parenting information. Is there anything I can do about this?

• apt-get install phpmyadmin on debian doesn't install /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf

  I'm trying to install phpmyadmin on my webserver, using this guide: http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu_debian_lamp_server I did that once, and it worked like a dream, but I hated the looks of phpmyadmin (maybe the oldest layout ever) and decided to delete it, and didn't know that deleting is done with apt-get remove phpmyadmin and did in phpmyadmin directory rm * and thought that it's done. However, as I can't find the debian build of phpmyadmin anywhere, I want to install it again, but when I add Include /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf to /etc/apache2/apache2.conf, and restart apache, it give's me this error: apache2: Syntax error on line 73 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Could not open configuration file /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf: No such file or directory Action 'configtest' failed. The Apache error log may have more information. failed! No matter how I try, I always get this error, and phpmyadmin isn't there.

• Ubuntu 13.10 Installing MariaDB

  I have tried everything to install MariaDB on this clean Ubuntu installation but I keep getting this error, Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: mariadb-server : Depends: mariadb-server-5.5 (= 5.5.33a+maria-1~saucy) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. I have followed this guide to try and install it, http://www.unixmen.com/install-lemp-server-nginx-mysql-mariadb-php-ubuntu-13-10-server/ And I have also followed the "official" guide on the MariaDB downloads page for 13.10 https://downloads.mariadb.org/mariadb/repositories/ But nothing seems to be working. Edit 1 I have tried both How do I resolve unmet dependencies? and How to install MariaDB? but it still gives me the error I posted above. It's a fresh Ubuntu install with hardly anything installed. Edit 2 All the check boxes are ticket in Updates. I ran: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -f install mariadb-server-5.5"=5.5.33a+maria-1~saucy" And it gave me this error: The following packages have unmet dependencies: mariadb-server-5.5 : Depends: mariadb-client-5.5 (>= 5.5.33a+maria-1~saucy) but it is not going to be installed Depends: mariadb-server-core-5.5 (>= 5.5.33a+maria-1~saucy) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

• Pub banter - content strategy at the ballot box?

  Last night, I was challenged to explain (and defend) content strategy. Three sheets to the wind after a pub quiz, this is no simple task, but I hope I acquitted myself passably. I say "hope" because there was a really interesting question I couldn't answer to my own satisfaction. I wonder if any of you folks out there in the ethereal internet hive-mind can help me out? A friend - a rather concrete thinker who mathematically models complex biological systems for a living - pointed out that my examples were largely routed in business-to-business web sales and support. He challenged me with: Say you've got a political website, so your goal is to have somebody read it and vote for you - how do you measure the effectiveness of that content? Well, you would. umm. Oh dear. I guess what we're talking about here, to yank it back to my present comfort zone, is a sales process where your point of conversion is off the site. The political example is perhaps a little below the belt, since what you can and can't do, and what data you can and can't collect is so restricted. You can't throw up a "How did you hear about this election?" questionnaire in the polling booth. Exit polls don't pull in your browsing history and site session information. Not everyone fatuously tweets and geo-tags each moment of their lives. Oh, and folks lie. The business example might be easier to attack. You could have, say, a site for a farm shop that only did over the counter sales. Either way, it's tricky. I fell back on some of the work I've done usability testing and benchmarking documentation, and suggested similar, quick and dirty, small sample qualitative UX trials. I'm not wholly sure that was right. Any thoughts? How might we measure and curate for this kind of discontinuous conversion?

• Sending Emails via Google SMTP - after some time quit working

  on a website I use PHPMailer to send automated registration emails, etc and also a newsletter-tool (which loops through the emails and sends them one by one). Also, I configured in Gmail under Settings and confirmed @mydomain addresses, so I can send from @mydomain emails without the gmail address being displayed. Furthermore I authorized the website to send mails with this link: https://accounts.google.com/DisplayUnlockCaptcha Now, after 2 month where everything worked perfectly fine, suddenly users started not to receive emails anymore and most recently emails are not even being sent anymore. Also, I received many error messages like this: Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 5.4.1 [email protected]: Recipient address rejected: Access Denied (state 13). When I check at this link: https://toolbox.googleapps.com/apps/checkmx/ It tells 2 none critical errors: Relayhost configuration detected. There SHOULD be a valid SPF record. So, the questions I would have were: does anybody have any hint why it stopped working, what the error messages mean? what to do to fix it? where do I set a SPF record (Cpanel?)? what is a relayhost and how to fix that? It is about 1000-1400 mails a day (gmail's limit is 2000). Also, what can I do wrong when setting up an SPF record? I've heard there are some testing tools for that. • LinkedIn Woopsie with the Outlook 2010 Social Media Connector

  I have always used the LinkedIn toolbar for Outlook to sort out, upload and sync my contacts. Because of this I have over 2000 contacts in my contacts list that I sync with my phone, Plaxo, live, Google and others. I got a surprise the other day when my LinkedIn account was suspended and I was unable to login.   Figure: Bad, account suspended   So I contacted LinkedIn customer services to find out what the problem is, and here is the response: Dear Martin, We have recently noticed a large number of page searches and profile views through your LinkedIn account. We are aware that you may be using an automated or manual process to systematically view LinkedIn web pages. The information within LinkedIn is provided by our users for usage on the site only. In order to protect user privacy, our User Agreement prohibits using: 1. Automated or manual means to view an excessively high number of profiles or mini-profiles. 2. Automated means to run searches to collect or store data obtained from our site. We have placed a restriction on your account until you agree to stop using these or similar methods to view pages on LinkedIn. We look forward to your reply to discuss this further. Sincerely, LinkedIn Privacy Team It looks like LinkedIn has suspended my account because of something that their component is doing! I do not know if this is an isolated case, or if it will happen more as more users get on Outlook 2010 and update to the new software, but watch out. • Is it possible to export Windows event logs from multiple servers to a non-windows host, without running event manager on each of the Windows servers?

  I want to export event logs from Windows to a non-Windows host. I was considering using Logstash, but that would seem to require that I install and run Logstash on each server. Is it possible to do this without having to run it on all of the servers? I am hoping to be able to consolidate all of the information from different servers to make searching and reporting much easier. If not, what would you recommend is the best way to export to a non-Windows host in real time? Thank you.

Follow these steps: Login/Register at http://SonicAgile.com Click the Settings link to navigate to Project Settings. Select the Files tab (the last tab). Click the connect link to connect to Dropbox. After you complete these steps, a new folder is created in your Dropbox at Apps\SonicAgile. All of your SonicAgile files are stored here. Uploading Files to SonicAgile After your SonicAgile project is connected to Dropbox, a new Files tab appears for every story. You can upload files under the Files tab by clicking the upload file link. When files are uploaded, the files are stored on your Dropbox under the Apps\SonicAgile folder. • Wolfram is out, any alternatives? Or how to go custom?

  We were originally planning on using wolfram alpha api for a new project but unfortunately the cost was entirely way to high for what we were using it for. Essentially what we were doing is calculating the nutrition facts for food. (http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=chicken+breast+with+broccoli). Before taking the step of trying to build something that may work in its place for this use case is there any open source code anywhere that can do this kind of analysis and compile the data? The hardest part in my opinion is what it has for assumptions and where it gets that data to power the calculations. Or another way to put it is, I cannot seem to wrap my head around building something that computes user input to return facts and knowledge. I know if I can convert the user input into some standardized form I can then compare that to a nutrition fact database to pull in the information I need. Does anyone know of any solutions to re-create this or APIs that can provide this kind of analysis? Thanks for any advice. I am trying to figure out if this project is dead in the water before it even starts. This kind of programming is well beyond me so I can only hope for an API, open source, or some kind of analysis engine to interpret user input when I know what kind of data they are entering (measurements and food).

• Bluetooth not seeing mouse (Fedora)

  I have a Lenovo S10 'netbook' that I've installed Fedora 17 ("LXDE spin") on. So far pretty much everything works great, except, the on-board Bluetooth. lsusb shows the controller present (0a5c:2101 Broadcom Corp. Bluetooth Controller), hcitool dev shows hci0 present, but when I put my mouse ("Lenovo Bluetooth Laser Mouse," which works perfectly paired with a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini, and Lenovo SL500 (with a USB dongle; running Windows 7)) into pairing mode and run hcitool scan (reports "Scanning ..." and, without further information or error message, returns to the shell prompt), blueman-manager, or bluetooth-wizard (from the gnome-bluetooth package) and try to detect the mouse, I get nothing... Frustrating! Thanks anyone who can point me in the right direction!

  I try and try and try to performance and fix problem with gluster, i try all. I served on gluster webpages, php files, images etc. I have problem after update from 3.3.0 to 3.3.1. I try 3.4 when i think maybe fix it but still the same problem. I temporarily have 1 brick, but before upgrade will be fine. Config: Volume Name: ... Type: Replicate Volume ID: ... Status: Started Number of Bricks: 0 x 2 = 1 Transport-type: tcp Bricks: Brick1: ...:/... Options Reconfigured: cluster.stripe-block-size: 128KB performance.cache-max-file-size: 100MB performance.flush-behind: on performance.io-thread-count: 16 performance.cache-size: 256MB auth.allow: ... performance.cache-refresh-timeout: 5 performance.write-behind-window-size: 1024MB I use fuse, hmm "Maybe the high load is due to the unavailable brick" i think about it, but i cant find information on how to safely change type of volume. Maybe u know how?

• Is HTML5/WebGL performance bad on low-end Android tablets and phones?

  I've developed a couple of WebGL games, and am trying them out on Android. I found that they run very slowly on my tablet, however. For example, a game with 10 sprites or so runs as 5fps. I tried Chrome and CocoonJS, but they are comparably slow. I also tried other games, and even games with only 5 or so moving sprites are this slow. This seems inconsistent with reports from others, such as this benchmark. Typically, when people talk about HTML5 game performance, they mention well-known and higher-end phones and tables. While my 7" tablet is cheap (I believe it's a relabeled Allwinner tablet, apparently with the Mali 400 GPU), I found it generally has a good gaming performance. All the games I tried run smoothly. I also developed an OpenGL ES 2 demo with 200 shaded 3D objects, and it ran at 50fps. My suspicion is that many low-end and white-label devices may have unacceptable HTML5/WebGL support, which means there may be a large section of gamers you will not reach when you choose this as your platform. I've heard rumors about inconsistent performance of HTML5 and WebGL on different devices, but no clear picture emerges. I would like to hear if any of you have had similar experiences with HTML5 or WebGL, or whether I can find information about the percentage of devices I can expect to have decent performance.

• Running make for Nginx throws a “multiple target patterns” error

  When I run make inside my installed nginx directory I get the output: make -f objs/Makefile make[1]: Entering directory `/home/ec2-user/nginx/nginx-1.2.4' objs/Makefile:110: *** multiple target patterns. Stop. make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/ec2-user/nginx/nginx-1.2.4' make: * [build] Error 2 I am on an Amazon Linux AMI. The steps I took from the beginning was wget /path/to/nginx/tarball tar xvf nginx-1.2.4.tar.gz cd nginx-1.2.4 ./configure --prefix=/nginx --a-bunch-of-other-options Then I ran make. Also I installed make by running sudo yum install make Please let me know if there's any other information I should be providing.

• Difference between Detach/Attach and Restore/BackUp a DB

  Transact-SQL BACKUP/RESTORE is the normal method for database backup and recovery. Databases can be backed up while online. The backup file size is usually smaller than the database files since only used pages are backed up. Also, in the FULL or BULK_LOGGED recovery model, you can reduce potential data loss by performing transaction log backups. Detaching a database removes the database from SQL Server while leaving the physical database files intact. This allows you to rename or move the physical files and then re-attach. Although one could perform cold backups using this technique, detach/attach isn't really intended to be used as a backup/recovery process. Commonly it is recommended that you use BACKUP/RESTORE for disaster recovery (DR) scenario and copying data from one location to another. But this is not absolute, sometimes for a very large database, if you want to move it from one location to another, backup/restore process may spend a lot of time which you do not like, in this case, detaching/attaching a database is a better way since you can attach a workable database very fast. But you need to aware that detaching a database will bring it offline for a short time and detaching/attaching does not provide DR function. • Wired Network not working on Ubuntu 11.10 + Strange Behavior with Manual Conf

  I'm new to Ubuntu - to be honest this is my very first day trying it... and I've already spent hours trying to make my wired connection work. I've been using this wired network with Windows and OSX, and in both systems I also had some trouble trying to connect in the past (and the troubleshooters did their magic and helped me get connected). When I add everything inside IPv4 Settings, the connection is finally successful, but only for 4~5 seconds before getting disconnected again... Update:I just changed the Connection Method to "Local-Link Only", and the same described above happens: At first, it says "Connection Stablished", but after a few seconds, the wired network gets disconnected. • How good is PDF password protection?

  It appears that Word's password protection is not really good, at least until Office 2003, if I read this SU entry correctly. I'm under the impression that Acrobat's PDF password protection should be better (it says 128-bit AES for Acrobat 7 and higher). Is that true? Of course, it depends on the strength of the password used, but assuming I protect my PDF with a password like sd8Jf+*e8fh§$fd8sHä, am I on the safe side? Like, say, for sending confidential patient information - not really valuable, but potentially highly sensitive.
