• Halloween: Season for Java Embedded Internet of Spooky Things (IoST) (Part 2)

  To start out our ghost hunting here at the Oracle Santa Clara campus office, we first need a ghost sensor. It's pretty easy to build one, since all we need to do is to create a circuit that can detect small fluctuations in the electromagnetic field, just like the fluctuations that ghosts cause when they pass by... Naturally, right? So, we build a static charge sensor and will use a Java Embedded app to monitor for changes in the sensor value, running analytics using Java technology on a Raspberry Pi. Bob's your uncle, and there you have it: a ghost sensor.   I'm trying to solve wordEnds from codingbat.com using regex. This is the simplest as I can make it with my current knowledge of regex: public String wordEnds(String str, String word) { return str.replaceAll( String.format( ".*?(?=%s)(?<=(.|^))%1$s(?=(.|$))|.+", java.util.regex.Pattern.quote(word) ), "$1$2" ); } String.format is used to inject word into the pattern for both readability and convenience (it's injected twice). Pattern.quote isn't necessary to pass their tests, but I think it's required for a proper regex-based solution. The regex has two major parts: If after matching as few characters as possible ".*?", word can still be found "(?=%s)", then lookbehind to capture any character immediately preceding it "(?<=(.|^))", match word "%1$s" and lookforward to capture any character following it "(?=(.|$))". The initial "if" test ensures that the atomic lookbehind captures only if there's a word Using lookahead to capture the following character doesn't consume it, so it can be used as part of further matching Otherwise match what's left "|.+" Groups 1 and 2 would capture empty strings I think this works in all cases, but it's obviously quite complex. I'm just wondering if others can suggest a simpler regex to do this. Note: I'm not looking for a solution using indexOf and a loop. I want a regex-based replaceAll solution. I also need a working solution that I can just copy-paste into codingbat and passes.

The problem comes in nesting a loop in my JavaScript code. • Why wont this JS code work if its all on the same line?

  I'm writing HTML code for a java servlet. i first write the code in html/js so i can debug what im working on, and then ill make it a java string and put it in my servlet. My problem is that the code is working fine when i view it in ff from a local html file, but when i view it on my java servlet, it doesnt work because the js isnt getting called. what I did was format the html that my servlet generated so that its not all on a single line and ran the code again. This time it worked. I copied this working code into a browser address bar so that it will all be on a single line, and copied that code back into the script in my html file. Now, when the previously working code is on a single line, it doesnt work. • Javascript works great locally, but not on my server

  I'm teaching myself javascript by creating a script for displaying an external rss feed on a webpage. The code I patched together works great locally. This is a screen grab of the code producing exactly the desired behavior. The code is populating all the information inside the section "Blog: Shades of Gray", except for "tagged" which I hard coded: But when I upload the site files to my server, the code doesn't work at all. • Dual AJAX Requests at different times

  Alright, I'm trying to make an AJAX Chat system that polls the chat database every 400ms. That part is working, the part of which isn't is the Active User List. When I try to combine the two requests, the first two requests are made, then the whole thing snowballs and the usually timed (12 second) Active User List request starts updating every 1ms and the first request NEVER happens again. • Extracting DCT coefficients from encoded images and video

  Is there a way to easily extract the DCT coefficients (and quantization parameters) from encoded images and video? Any decoder software must be using them to decode block-DCT encoded images and video. So I'm pretty sure the decoder knows what they are. Is there a way to expose them to whomever is using the decoder? I'm implementing some video quality assessment algorithms that work directly in the DCT domain. Currently, the majority of my code uses OpenCV, so it would be great if anyone knows of a solution using that framework. I don't mind using other libraries (perhaps libjpeg, but that seems to be for still images only), but my primary concern is to do as little format-specific work as possible (I don't want to reinvent the wheel and write my own decoders). I want to be able to open any video/image (H.264, MPEG, JPEG, etc) that OpenCV can open, and if it's block DCT-encoded, to get the DCT coefficients. In the worst case, I know that I can write up my own block DCT code, run the decompressed frames/images through it and then I'd be back in the DCT domain. That's hardly an elegant solution, and I hope I can do better.
