• A help system for a PHP web app

  Hi, As our new web app gets more complicated, so the need for help docs increases. I am not talking about documenting code, I am literally talking about application help. So myapp/help, or for example, enabling context help from a particular point in the app with a link such as myapp/help/users/create/ etc. Are there apps out there for doing this? For example, Wufoo use wordpress for http://wufoo.com/docs/ which I like (and understand wp, so its a nice solution), and Xero have a lovely ASPX http://help.xero.com/ interface. But I'm thinking there might be more dedicated implementations for what I'm looking for. We're on a linux, apache, postgresql, php stack, but a mysql supported installation is not the end of the world. Does anyone have any suggestions for this? It's a bit of a minefield when googling php + help + system.

  How do I change the visual state of a hyperlinkbutton inside a datatemplate? In short, what I'm doing is basically I'm trying to iterate of the hyperlinkbuttons and set their visual state to active or inactive according to the url. The hyperlink buttons are located inside the datatemplate of an itemscontrols itemsource that is bound to a List where link is my custom class for links. Is there a best practice for styling the active hyperlink in a silverlight nav app? What I am using is the approach of the boilerplate code.

• Is it possible to connect iPhones through NAT traversal techniques over 3G for peer 2 peer gaming

  Is it possible to connect an iPhone to another iPhone or any other network client talking that game's protocol. I was thinking that I could use the same NAT Traversal technique used in the XBox 360 to host games on users XBox's through Firewalls. For NAT traversal to work effectively I'd have to have a central server that would allow clients to "broadcast" that they were hosting so that another client could initiate the NAT connection. In the link provided this is called relaying. Is there any inherent limitation of the US AT&T 3G network that will block the NAT traversal techniques (would you be limited to wifi firewall NAT traversal)? • Run Your Tests With Any NUnit Version

  I always thought that the NUnit test runners and the test assemblies need to reference the same NUnit.Framework version. I wanted to be able to run my test assemblies with the newest GUI runner (currently 2.5.3). Ok so all I need to do is to reference both NUnit versions the newest one and the official for the current project. There is a nice article form Kent Bogart online how to reference the same assembly multiple times with different versions. The magic works by referencing one NUnit assembly with an alias which does prefix all types inside it. Then I could decorate my tests with the TestFixture and Test attribute from both NUnit versions and everything worked fine except that this was ugly. After playing a little bit around to make it simpler I found that I did not need to reference both NUnit.Framework assemblies. The test runners do not require the TestFixture and Test attribute in their specific version. That is really neat since the test runners are instructed by attributes what to do in a declarative way there is really no need to tie the runners to a specific version. I tell NUnit what to do by decorating my tests classes with NUnit Attributes and the runner executes my intent without the need to bind me to a specific version. The contract between NUnit versions is actually a bit more complex (think of AssertExceptions) but this is also handled nicely by using not the concrete type but simply to check for the catched exception type by string. What can we learn from this? Versioning can be easy if the contract is small and the users of your library use it in a declarative way (Attributes). Everything beyond it will force you to reference several versions of the same assembly with all its consequences. Type equality is lost between versions so none of your casts will work. That means that you cannot simply use IBigInterface in two versions. You will need a wrapper to call the correct versioned one. To get out of this mess you can use one (and only one) version agnostic driver to encapsulate your business logic from the concrete versions. This is of course more work but as NUnit shows it can be easy. Simplicity is therefore not a nice thing to have but also requirement number one if you intend to make things more complex in version two and want to support any version (older and newer). Any interaction model above easy will not be maintainable. There are different approached to versioning. Below are my own personal observations how versioning works within the  .NET Framwork and NUnit.   Versioning Models 1. Bug Fixing and New Isolated Features When you only need to fix bugs there is no need to break anything. This is especially true when you have a big API surface. Microsoft did this with the .NET Framework 3.0 which did leave the CLR as is but delivered new assemblies for the features WPF, WCF and Windows Workflow Foundations. Their basic model was that the .NET 2.0 assemblies were declared as red assemblies which must not change (well mostly but each change was carefully reviewed to minimize the risk of breaking changes as much as possible) whereas the new green assemblies of .NET 3,3.5 did not have such obligations since they did implement new unrelated features which did not have any impact on the red assemblies. This is versioning strategy aimed at maximum compatibility and the delivery of new unrelated features. If you have a big API surface you should strive hard to do the same or you will break your customers code with every release. 2. New Breaking Features There are times when really new things need to be added to an existing product. The .NET Framework 4.0 did change the CLR in many ways which caused subtle different behavior although the API´s remained largely unchanged. Sometimes it is possible to simply recompile an application to make it work (e.g. changed method signature void Func() –> bool Func()) but behavioral changes need much more thought and cannot be automated. To minimize the impact .NET 2.0,3.0,3.5 applications will not automatically use the .NET 4.0 runtime when installed but they will keep using the “old” one. What is interesting is that a side by side execution model of both CLR versions (2 and 4) within one process is possible. Key to success was total isolation. You will have 2 GCs, 2 JIT compilers, 2 finalizer threads within one process. The two .NET runtimes cannot talk  (except via the usual IPC mechanisms) to each other. Both runtimes share nothing and run independently within the same process. This enables Explorer plugins written for the CLR 2.0 to work even when a CLR 4 plugin is already running inside the Explorer process. The price for isolation is an increased memory footprint because everything is loaded and running two times.   3. New Non Breaking Features It really depends where you break things. NUnit has evolved and many different Assert, Expect… methods have been added. These changes are all localized in the NUnit.Framework assembly which can be easily extended. As long as the test execution contract (TestFixture, Test, AssertException) remains stable it is possible to write test executors which can run tests written for NUnit 10 because the execution contract has not changed. It is possible to write software which executes other components in a version independent way but this is only feasible if the interaction model is relatively simple.   Versioning software is hard and it looks like it will remain hard since you suddenly work in a severely constrained environment when you try to innovate and to keep everything backwards compatible at the same time. These are contradicting goals and do not play well together. The easiest way out of this is to carefully watch what your customers are doing with your software. Minimizing the impact is much easier when you do not need to guess how many people will be broken when this or that is removed.

• Android "Hello World" tutorial program. Error: [Parse Error] There is a problem parsing the package

  Today I decided to start developing for the Android OS. I went on their website, downloaded all the required software (Eclipse, The Android SDK, ADT Plugin for Eclipse etc.). I followed the "Hello World" tutorial supplied (link text). I have it using the Android SDK 2.1. The program worked almost flawlessly. It runs fine on the Android emulator, but doesn't install on any Android phones. I don't own an Android phone, so I had three of my friends try to install the program on theirs. The phones we used were: ROOTED G1 running 2.1 Droid running 2.1 Another Droid running 2.1 I emailed the .apk to myself in gmail, and accessed it via the Android emulator. It ran and installed the package just fine. However, when my friends tried to install it on their phones, they were all met with this error: "[Parse Error] There is a problem parsing the package" I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what may be wrong. • Annotating axis in ggplot2

  I am looking for the way to annotate axis in ggplot2. The example of the problem can be found here: http://learnr.wordpress.com/2009/09/24/ggplot2-back-to-back-bar-charts. The y axis of the chart (example graph in the link) has an annotation: (million euro). Is there a way to create such types of annotations in ggplot2? Looking at the documentation there is no obvious way, since the ggplot does not explicitly let you put objects outside plotting area. But maybe there is some workaround? One of the possible workarounds I thought about is using scales: data=data.frame(x=1:10,y=1:10) qplot(x=x,y=y,data=data)+scale_y_continuous(breaks=10.1,label="Millions") But then how do I remove the tick? And it seems that since ggplot does not support multiple scales, I will need to grab the output of the scale_y_continuous, when it calculates the scales automaticaly and then add my custom break and label by hand. Maybe there is a better way?

• Has MSDN Dropped Compact Framework already?

  MSDN Documentation used to indicate if a method was supported on the compact framework. But now I can't find that info anymore. I know that Microsoft has dropped Compact Framework like a hot potato, but I did not know that they had ripped it out of the docs. As examples of what I am talking about here is a link to the Graphics Members. They used to show which methods were supported in the Compact Framework next to each method. Now they do not. Also, here are two methods: Graphics.MeasureString Method (String, Font, Int32) Graphics.MeasureString Method (String, Font) The first is not supported in the compact framework, but the second is. But the docs don't tell you that (at least not at the bottom where they used to). Am I missing something? Is there a way to still get this info?

• How should I use this SetSPN command when installing SharePoint

  In the SharePoint install document I have it says, If you use a domain user account for the SQL Server service account, you must make sure that a valid service principal name (SPN) for that account and instance of SQL Server on their database server exists in their environment. This is the case regardless of whether you use NTLM or Kerberos authentication for Office SharePoint Server 2007. You must configure the SPN for that account in the domain using the Setspn.exe command-line tool. Setspn.exe is installed by default on computers running Windows Server 2008. Run the following command on a computer that is joined to the same domain as the user/service account. setspn -a <http/<farmclusterdnsname> <serviceaccountname> What should the parameters be in this case? I guess the serviceaccountname would be 'domain\username' not sure what the first parameter should be though. This is the technet link for SetSPN.

• the scope of a pointer ???

  Ok, so I did find some questions that were almost similar but they actually confused me even more about pointers. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2715198/c-pointer-objects-vs-non-pointer-objects-closed In the link above, they say that if you declare a pointer it is actually saved on the heap and not on the stack, regardless of where it was declared at. Is this true ?? Or am I misunderstanding ??? I thought that regardless of a pointer or non pointer, if its a global variable, it lives as long as the application. If its a local variable or declared within a loop or function, its life is only as long as the code within it.

• How to fix flicker when using Webkit transforms & transitions

  I have a very simple demo working that uses Webkit transforms and transitions for smooth horizontal scrolling between 'panels' (divs). The reason I want to go this route as opposed to a Javascript driven system is that it's for the iPad and Javascript performance is quite poor, but the css transforms and transitions are smooth as silk. Sadly though, I'm getting a lot of flicker on the iPad with my Demo. You can see the demo here You'll need safari or and iPad to see it in action. I've never seen this happening in any of the demos for transforms and transitions so I'm hopeful that this is fixable. Anyway here's the code that powers the thing.... • Instruments memory leak iphone

  Hi, I posted this problem a few days ago but it was very muddled and my question wasnt very clear so I removed it. I've been digging around and the memory leak is still persiting. Hopefully this attempt will be clearer. First off I've run the static analyzer and it reports no memory leaks. I then ran Instruments and it pointed to a memory leak at this line of code. • problem with sIFR 3 not displaying in IE just getting XXX

  I am having a problem with sIFR 3 not displaying in IE. I get 3 larges black XXX in IE yet it displays fine in Firefox. I have checked i do have the most recent version of flash installed correctly.   I have a wordpress page with two or three sub-pages ("TV", "WEB", "WATCH") and I would like to have the sub-page links on the page itself. So, far, I can pull the sub-pages the following way: <?php $children = wp_list_pages('title_li&child_of='.$post->ID.'depth=1&echo=0'); if ($children) { ?> <ul> <?php echo $children; ?> </ul> <?php } ?> However, is there a way to loop through $children so I can pull each link by it's tag? i.e. using has_tag('tv'), has_tag('web') Between the wordpress conditional tags and php, I am not sure how to write this.

  I'm new to Xcode and iPhone apps. I want to select an image from iPhone (camera or library) and send to php via ajax. http://wiki.phonegap.com/iPhone:-Camera-API I'm using the phonegap framework, Xcode iPhone SDK version 3.1.x. On clicking button it calls function with parameter 0 or 1, but it does not initialize camera or display the library. I checked the simulator virtual phone; there is no icon for camera, but the pictures album is there. I used the same code as in the above link. What do I do, what and how to check? any other functions to get photos using phonegap?

• Problems debugging virtual host with Netbeans

  I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 I installed apache2 and downloaded the php 5.3.2 tar.gz, untarred and compiled. I then installed xdebug via pecl. After that I installed mysql-server and PhpMyAdmin. PhpMyAdmin can change apache2 settings, and now, xdebug is no longer included in my phpinfo(); overview. I've done a search for all possible php.ini files, but the 2 that I've found both link the xdebug.so file correctly. Yet still, Xdebug won't show. I have used and tested /etc/php5/php.ini and that worked, but it seems apache is now using a different php.ini file, and I don't know how to change that setting. Can anyone tell me how to bring it back to what it used to be? Also, installing apache, php and Xdebug was something I did by use of this video: http://vimeo.com/8005503

  I've chosen JQuery as my JavaScript library but now I'm a bit frustrated by the JQuery plugin site... the site kinda sucks... the plugin area isn't designed very well and I can only find a few treeviews. The one with the most votes (link text) isn't supported anymore. Can someone please point me to an industrial strength treeview? Desired Features: 1. stable 2. async / ajax would be nice 3. drag and drop nodes would be nice I've been delighted so far with JQueryUI--nice design. • Listing common SQL Code Smells.

  Once you’ve done a number of SQL Code-reviews, you’ll know those signs in the code that all might not be well. These ’Code Smells’ are coding styles that don’t directly cause a bug, but are indicators that all is not well with the code. . Kent Beck and Massimo Arnoldi seem to have coined the phrase in the "OnceAndOnlyOnce" page of www.C2.com, where Kent also said that code "wants to be simple". Bad Smells in Code was an essay by Kent Beck and Martin Fowler, published as Chapter 3 of the book ‘Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code’ (ISBN 978-0201485677) Although there are generic code-smells, SQL has its own particular coding habits that will alert the programmer to the need to re-factor what has been written. See Exploring Smelly Code   and Code Deodorants for Code Smells by Nick Harrison for a grounding in Code Smells in C# I’ve always been tempted by the idea of automating a preliminary code-review for SQL. It would be so useful to trawl through code and pick up the various problems, much like the classic ‘Lint’ did for C, and how the Code Metrics plug-in for .NET Reflector by Jonathan 'Peli' de Halleux is used for finding Code Smells in .NET code. The problem is that few of the standard procedural code smells are relevant to SQL, and we need an agreed list of code smells. Merrilll Aldrich made a grand start last year in his blog Top 10 T-SQL Code Smells.However, I'd like to make a start by discovering if there is a general opinion amongst Database developers what the most important SQL Smells are. One can be a bit defensive about code smells. I will cheerfully write very long stored procedures, even though they are frowned on. I’ll use dynamic SQL occasionally. You can only use them as an aid for your own judgment and it is fine to ‘sign them off’ as being appropriate in particular circumstances. Also, whole classes of ‘code smells’ may be irrelevant for a particular database. The use of proprietary SQL, for example, is only a ‘code smell’ if there is a chance that the database will have to be ported to another RDBMS. The use of dynamic SQL is a risk only with certain security models. As the saying goes,  a CodeSmell is a hint of possible bad practice to a pragmatist, but a sure sign of bad practice to a purist. Plamen Ratchev’s wonderful article Ten Common SQL Programming Mistakes lists some of these ‘code smells’ along with out-and-out mistakes, but there are more. The use of nested transactions, for example, isn’t entirely incorrect, even though the database engine ignores all but the outermost: but it does flag up the possibility that the programmer thinks that nested transactions are supported. If anything requires some sort of general agreement, the definition of code smells is one. I’m therefore going to make this Blog ‘dynamic, in that, if anyone twitters a suggestion with a #SQLCodeSmells tag (or sends me a twitter) I’ll update the list here. If you add a comment to the blog with a suggestion of what should be added or removed, I’ll do my best to oblige. In other words, I’ll try to keep this blog up to date. The name against each 'smell' is the name of the person who Twittered me, commented about or who has written about the 'smell'. it does not imply that they were the first ever to think of the smell! Use of deprecated syntax such as *= (Dave Howard) Denormalisation that requires the shredding of the contents of columns. (Merrill Aldrich) Contrived interfaces Use of deprecated datatypes such as TEXT/NTEXT (Dave Howard) Datatype mis-matches in predicates that rely on implicit conversion.(Plamen Ratchev) Using Correlated subqueries instead of a join   (Dave_Levy/ Plamen Ratchev) The use of Hints in queries, especially NOLOCK (Dave Howard /Mike Reigler) Few or No comments. Use of functions in a WHERE clause. (Anil Das) Overuse of scalar UDFs (Dave Howard, Plamen Ratchev) Excessive ‘overloading’ of routines. The use of Exec xp_cmdShell (Merrill Aldrich) Excessive use of brackets. (Dave Levy) Lack of the use of a semicolon to terminate statements Use of non-SARGable functions on indexed columns in predicates (Plamen Ratchev) Duplicated code, or strikingly similar code. Misuse of SELECT * (Plamen Ratchev) Overuse of Cursors (Everyone. Special mention to Dave Levy & Adrian Hills) Overuse of CLR routines when not necessary (Sam Stange) Same column name in different tables with different datatypes. • How to remotely connect to jmx on tomcat using ssh tunnelling and not break ehcache...

  I've followed the instructions in the following link to create my own RMI registry and jmx server on a single port inside tomcat. According to the comments, I need to set -Djava.rmi.server.hostname=localhost. Once I do that, I can indeed connect to my server via jconsole using ssh port forwarding. http://blogs.sun.com/jmxetc/entry/connecting_through_firewall_using_jmx However, I've found it has the very bad side affect of breaking our ehcache replication which uses RMI. It fails complaining that it cannot bootstrap from remote peer localhost. I'm guessing because the peers all have their rmi server hostname set to localhost from setting -Djava.rmi.server.hostname=localhost. Does anyone have a possible workaround to this problem?

• Receiving "Path 'OPTIONS' is forbidden." Exception in ASP.NET website

  I am getting the error "Path 'OPTIONS' is forbidden." since we moved our website over to a new server setup. I am unable to recreate the error but I am receiving emails for this exception at least a few times a day. Any ideas what could be causing this and how I can fix it? EDIT: Stack Trace: at System.Web.HttpMethodNotAllowedHandler.ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) at System.Web.HttpApplication.CallHandlerExecutionStep.System.Web.HttpApplication.IExecutionStep.Execute() at System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) There are no directories or files named OPTIONS and I believe all permissions are correct. I am finding some information about a possible link to EXCEL getting data from the webserver, but nothing that full explains how or what is happening yet. EDIT AGAIN: Seems this has to do with Excel files opening in Internet Explorer..

• Weak-linking with static libraries

  I have declared an external function with a GCC weak attribute in a .c file: extern int weakFunction( ) __attribute__ ((weak)); Compiled object file has weakFunction defined as a weak symbol. Output of nm: 1791: w weakFunction I am calling the weak defined function as follows: if (weakFunction != NULL) { weakFunction(); } When I link the program by defining the object files as parameters to GCC (gcc main.o weakf.o -o main.exe) weak symbols work fine. If I leave the weakf.o out of linking, the function address is NULL in main.c and the function won't be called. Problem is, when weakf.o is inside a static library, for some reason the linker doesn't find the function and the function address always ends up being NULL. Static library is created with ar: ar rcs weaklibrary weakf.o Anyone had similar problems?

When I run the application on emulator for 240*320 screen resolution or less than that it works well ( only it provide the horizontal & vertical scrall bar in case of resolution less tha 240*320). If I run my application on emulator with more than 240*320 screen resolution its User Inferface gets badly affected. How to make the smart device application screen resolution independent ? Can you provide me the code or link through which i can resolve the above issue? Is there any setting for making the application screen resolution independent?
