• After a period of time, nslookup still works, but pinging, and an auto-refeshed website, fails.

  Contrary to this SO question this is for a dotted name (gw.localnet.au), and it doesn't happen straight away. Only after some period of time (quite a long time, possibly days). In fact this is for my ADSL router and its internal IP address which I have named within the router itself and in my Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller DNS Service. Specifically, localnet.au is a Active-Directory-backed primary domain. In fact, an ipconfig /flushdns may fix the problem, but only after a while (about the time it took me to type in this question :-) ). That doesn't explain the root cause though... • My application had a WindowsIdentity crisis

  The project I have been working on this week to test computer environments needs to do various actions as a user other than the one running the application. For instance, it looks up an installed Windows Service, finds out who the startup user is, and tries to connect to a database as that Windows user. Later on, it will need to access a file in the context of the currently logged-in user. With ASP .NET, this is super-easy: just go into Web.Config and set up the "identity impersonate" node, which can either impersonate a named user or the one who had logged into the website if authentication was enabled. With Windows applications, this is not so straightforward. There may be something I am overlooking, but the limitation seems to be that you can only change the security context on the current thread: any threads spawned by the impersonated thread also inherit the impersonated credentials. Impersonation is easy enough to do, once you figure out how. • Connecting to my SMTP server

  I have a few questions, I just installed SMTP on my Ubuntu server, and I want to know how to connect to it from a different machine... I'm not really clear. I tried: telnet my.servers.ip.address 25 I think it's running on port 25, but I don't know where to find out, its not in the conf file anywhere. Additionally do I need it to be a FDQN? or can I just access my mail server via it's IP address? I know that the service works on the machine because I'm able to echo test | mail -s "test" [email protected] Any help debugging or understanding this would be helpful, thanks guys!

• Installing DB2 in Windows 2003 Cluster

  How can I install db2 with already created domain user? Or maybe there is no need, just install with local user db2admin and then create instance using existing domain user? This is how it looks I've got win 2003 cluster single quorum, I have to move db2 database to another cluster in same domain. I've added resources to new cluster like in IBM redbook, and I have problem adding db2 resource. I've got service account DOMAIN\serviceaccount and DOMAIN\db2_instance owner, to install db2 do I have to log in as db2_instance_owner? Thanks in advance

• Windows Search Indexing SSD

  I just bought a new SSD (Vertex4 from OCZ, 256G) and installed Windows 8 with it on my laptop. I am not using an external hard drive to keep extra data (paging, temp files etc) because I am using a laptop and do not want to carry it around with me. My question is, if I disable Windows indexer (Windows Search service), does Windows still search files under the search (Windows 7 Start menu search/Metro UI Windows 8 search)? Since the indexer was meant to search for files by indexing them, does this mean that Windows will not search new files? Thanks in advance.

  Hello, I'm having the following problem. I'm installing SharePoint 2010 Beta so I need to activate the windows feature "Windows Communication Foundation Non-HTTP Activation". The problem is I cannot activate it, i get the message: "An error has occurred. Not all features were successfully changed" When i look at the log (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) I found this error: Process output: [l:186 [186]"SMConfigInstaller[Error]: Failed in calling 'StartService' for service 'NetTcpActivator'. Error code: 0x8007042c Anyone can give me a clue of what is happening here?

• Directing Multiple ccTLD's to 1 gTLD with a country specific subdirectory?

  We have multiple ccTLDomains and are thinking about how to best combine these into one. We want to do this to focus our link building efforts. We are running a website through which we offer a software-as-a-service. Therefore we could potentially sell to any country in the world. However, Germany is our most important market. We currently have a .com, .de, .nl. and .pl domain. All these domains have a high amount of unique content pages. What we are planning is to change everything to .com with language-based subdirectories, so .com/en/, .com/de/, etc. I have two questions concerning this issue: 1) How much of an advantage does a ccTLD have over a gTLD with country specific subdirectories in search rankings? So let’s say .de versus .com/de/? 2) How could we best redirect the visitors of our old ccTLD’s to our gTLD’s subdirectories? We would like to loose as few search engine rankings as possible. • Quantify value for management

  We have two different legacy systems (window services in this case) that do exactly the same thing. Both of these systems have small differences for the different applications they serve. Both of these system's core functionality lies within a shared library. Most of the time, the updates occur in the shared library and we simply deploy the updated library to both of these systems. The systems themselves rarely change. Since both of these systems do essentially the same thing, our development team would like to consolidate these two systems into a single service. What can I do to convince management to allocate time for such a task? Some of the points I've noted are: Easier maintenance Decrease testing/QA time Unfortunately, this isn't enough. They would like us to provide them with hard numbers on the amount of hours this will save in the future and how this will speed up future development. Since most of the work is done in the shared library and the systems themselves never change, it's hard for us to quantify how many hours this will save. What kind of arguments can I make to justify the extra work to consolidate these systems?

• Is it possible to get a google voice number without already having a phone number?

  I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I couldn't find a more suitable website in the stackexchange network. I currently have no phone number; I can make outgoing calls via the widget in gmail, but I cannot receive calls (as far as I know). I know that you can set up a google voice number to forward to google chat, and this is exactly what I want. The problem is, I can't get a google voice number in the first place, because it first requires that I have an existing phone number, even if I wouldn't use it. So, it is possible to skip providing an existing phone number, and just get a google voice number that forwards to google chat? Alternatively, is there any free phone service that can be used without a phone and lets you receive calls from any number? I realize I'm kind of asking for free candy, but, if it's out there, I'd be a fool

• Win Server 2003 - Task Scheduler - Tasks with GUI and Services

  I need to run excel macro daily. I scheduled it with Windows Scheduler and it worked fine until I had to change my password. I wonder if it's possible to have a task scheduled without a password? As alternative we have third party scheduling software, but this software cannot launch excel. The tech support said that since excel has gui and scheduling software runs as service with "Allow to interact to Desktop" disabled, it cannot launch excel. Also tech support mentioned that "Allow to interact to Desktop" is not supported as of Vista. I totally trust tech support guy, I just need a work around that would make my network administrator and me happy. Regards.

  Possible Duplicate: When to use abstract classes instead of interfaces and extension methods in C#? Why are interfaces useful? What is the point of an interface? What other reasons are there to write interfaces rather than abstract classes? What is the point of having every service class have an interface? Is it bad habit not using interfaces? I am reading Microsoft Visual C# 2010 Step by Step which I feel it is a very good book on introducing you to the C# language. I have just finished reading a chapter on interfaces and although I understood the syntax of creating and using interfaces I have trouble of understanding the point on why should I use them? Correct me If I am wrong but in an interface you can only declare methods names and parameters.The body of the method should be declared in the class that inherits the interface. So in this case why should I declare an interface if I am going to declare the entire method in the class that inherits that interface? What is the point? Does this have something to do with the fact that a class can inherit multiple interfaces?

• Log incoming requests on Ubuntu (ports 80, 443)

  We have Tomcat running on Ubuntu server. It runs a web service, open to the internet. Sometimes it has a sudden spike of traffic and goes down. There is nothing unusual in Tomcat access logs. I guess it is because some of the requests are so 'heavy' that they never finish and hence are not recorded to Tomcat access logs. Is there a way to configure Ubuntu to log incoming requests in the following format (below)? Date, Time, URL (with query string params), IP address (of client) There should be one line per request. Each request should be logged before it is executed. Only incoming requests to ports 80 and 443 should be logged.

• Can't deploy an ejb bean on jboss

  I am try to deploy a jar to an jboss server. It works on my environment. But when I deployed the same jar on another server, i kept getting an error saying that the persistence unit is already registered. There is no other bean using the same name and the same persistence unit name. I tried to restart the server and remove the tmp, work, data directory but still get the same error. here is my error: ObjectName: jboss.j2ee:service=EJB3,module=wess_jpa.jar State: FAILED Reason: java.lang.RuntimeException: javax.management.InstanceAlreadyExistsException: persistence.units:unitName=dses_wess already registered. They give you javascript code that you embed in your pages (whichever event you wish to track) and voila..you're done. I have written a native application for Android phones, which is actually an adaptation of the actual web site. Now, I am required to setup Analytics and tracking for this native application. Question: How to do this on Mobile phones from within a native application? We have Java Script code that works for the original web site. Is there a way to incorporate that in the native application? I know Android supports Java Script via WebViews(Webkit);my application does not have webviews and it is native. Also, I have not worked on JavaScript since school so excuse me if I sound naive. Thanks.

Therefore, to use it, in its current state, you'll need lots of Java Editor related JARs even though your own application probably doesn't include a Java Editor. • Creating a portable PHP install?

  I would like to create a folder with a couple versions of PHP that I can start in cgi mode as needed. I use different windows machines for development and I would like to be able to move around computers without needing to install PHP on each one. Something like below F:/PHP /5.3.2 /5.2.8 /5.1.0 Then I could just start each up as needed with something like F:\php\5.3.2\php-cgi.exe -b 127.0.0.1:9000 Which would allow nginx or apache to use the PHP service. This would really help to make my development environment decoupled. Does anyone know how to create a portable PHP install?

  Here are the notes for this week’s release: Diffs in Pull Requests and Commits We altered the way we display diffs across commits and pull requests to maximize the amount of vertical real estate devoted to the diff. Before, the viewport for diffs was always snapped to the height of the browser, which meant that on lower resolutions, the amount of space for viewing diffs could become very tiny. Now, the majority of the browser vertical space is devoted to viewing the diffs. Let us know what you think!
