• How do I edit files in the console when connecting to windows 7 via ssh?

  I am using tunnelier client and server to connect to a windows machine. I can get in and have access to all of the files on the computer. I have vim installed on that windows machine, but I can't seem to edit anything via the DOS command line. I also tried editing in notepad, but nothing happens when I enter the command. I think this might be the part where DOS doesn't behave like bash. Would I need to setup cygwin / openssh to accomplish this? (boo, tunnelier is so easy) Thanks! p.s. I know I could just use sftp and edit files that way, but it feels dirty.

• Large OSX 10.6 to Windows 7 smb transfers fail?

  I'm connecting to a windows 7 box from a OSX 10.6 box via smb: smb://ftp1 Connection works fine, I can transfer individual files one at a time, but as soon as I try and move an entier folder I get the following error: The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “test” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36) This error happens on all our OSX boxes when trying to push the entier folder to the Win7 box. The folder TEST in the above error message has -R 777 permissions. I can move every image file to the windows box one by one with no errors. But if I try an move the entier folder. bam error out. This error seems to kill the smb client on the Windows box as well. There's an FTP server on the windows box and I can FTP in from the OSX box and move everything just fine. Not sure what is going on here?

  A few weeks ago I came up with an idea to develop a mobile app which will direct students in my university to the nearest printer availiable. The whole thing is part of my final project. The Android based app will need to perform the following tasks: The user's location in the campus is sent to the server. Assume this part works just fine. The server sends an SNMP request to the printers in the user's vicinity. I'll probably use PHP or Python for that part. The data requested by SNMP is processed and sent back to the client My question concerns the server. The university's IT manager offered me a designated server for development, which sounds great. Now I need to choose which OS I want installed on the server - Windows server or Linux (don't know which versions). I don't have any server programming/operating experince, but generally speaking I feel more comfortable in Windows enviroment (just because that has always been my OS). I don't have much time for learning a new OS, but when does it make sense generally to host or develop server side applications on a Windows environment versus a Linux environment?

• DHCP misbehavior

  ISC DHCP Server is running on Fedora 10. Since it's doing nothing else nobody bothered updating it... I've noticed behavior that looks very strange to me: the DHCP server gets a DISCOVER as broadcast, sends OFFER as unicast to the DHCP relay - and immediately afterwards sends the same offer as a bcast. The client itself is misbehaving, it's continuously sending DHCP DISCOVER packets, but I don't think that could cause the server to bcast the offer. Does anyone have any idea why this might happen - is it maybe a feature of this stone-age server?

• how to stop deferred emails

  I have a postfix mail gateway. At the same time, every other host is set to use this gateway as the relay. We have some automated outgoing emails sent from some hosts. I believe the gateway trys to send a deferred status back to the system started this. But that system is a null client, which sends but not receive any email Is there anyway to stop sending the deferred status? e.g. postfix/smtp[35725]: 2F6A155C256: to=, relay=none, delay=260862, delays=260862/0.01/0/0, dsn=4.4.1, status=deferred (connect to orange.mydom.com[192.168.1.5]:25: Connection refused) Thanks

I need to do remote work with a client and because they know absolutely nothing they walked out of Best Buy with an ARM laptop that can't run jack. It must be freeware. It must be able to have something the first time it comes up that the user can tell me and I know how to connect to their computer (simple like Ammyy Admin). • Is this a b43 driver problem?

  I have 13.04 on a Dell Inspiron 1564 with Broadcom 4312 WiFi card. The wl drivers cause kernel panic on linux-3.8 so I succesfully installed the b43 driver a couple of months ago. Now I have changed ISP and got a new router, and the connection drop when downloading software from internet to a 2008r2 using Remmina Client, and apt-get install on virtual machines in virtualbox. I have no idea why this suddenly became a problem.. My phone does not loose the connection, just Ubuntu. Output from /var/log/syslog after lost connection rfkill list(after disconnecting): 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: yes I can use NetworkManager to disable wireless and then enable wireless to connect again. rfkill ublock all/wifi/0 removes only Soft blocked. lshw -C network *-network description: Wireless interface physical id: 4 logical name: wlan0 serial: 78:e4:00:78:d2:05 capabilities: ethernet physical wireless configuration: broadcast=yes driver=b43 driverversion=3.8.0-32-generic firmware=478.104 ip=10.0.0.3 link=yes multicast=yes wireless=IEEE lspci 04:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01) After waking from suspend and when booting, it takes about 40 sec to get network connection. After tinkering I figure the method suggested in my question would be best to make things actually easy. PS. I have already tried opening all ports both inbound and outbound to that IP with no results. My only current success has been actually turning the whole firewall off.

Is there a way to continue to return unknown_request.json to the client when the remote server returns a 404 assuming the remote server can't be changed to return unknown_request.json? • How does Apache process several requests at a time?

  In a short question: If 10 requests hit Apache, does it process them one by one, so when R3 finishes, then it starts to run R4, or does it fire 10 processes/threads/whatever and are resolved simultaneously? Now some background: I have a PHP script that takes up to two minutes to do some processes. My question is: while a client is waiting for this 2 minutes, all the other clients requests are being processed? Or also waiting for this one to end? By the way, if there are simultaneous request, how can I handle them? Let's say put a limit on them. Or a limit on resources consumed. For instance I want the server to use its 80% performance on serving the webapp, and just a 20% for those long operations ... because I have no hurry to end them. Doesn't know if it cares but is all in PHP. Thanks in advance!!

• Can't delete profile

  Hi All, I have a client machine (XP SP3) which used to be connected to a windows 2003 domain, but the server has since gone down due to a hard drive failure, however the profiles still remain in 'documents and settings'. I have a local admin account on the same machine (in the administrator's group), except when i try to remove the profiles manually from System Properties - Advanced - User Profiles - Settings, the delete button is disabled. Also, Windows prevents me from deleting or renaming the user's profile folder as well, due to a lock with ntuser.dat Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated, Cheers!

  I just changed to a new contract that I want to use with all my future clients. I love this contract. It's in plain English, very readable, very understandable. It has this statement regarding ownership of the website after it's been paid for: After any outstanding balance for the project is paid, we will assign to you all copyrights in the graphical and visual elements of the design that we will create under the scope of this project. However, we will retain the copyright to all coding elements, but will provide you with a license for you to use these elements in the deliverables of this project. What is this license of which it speaks? I understand the concept: I maintain all rights to my code but allow them to use it in this particular website. That part's new in this contract, and I like it a lot. But now... what? I have to come up with a license to hand the client when the website is paid for. But which license? And do I physically (or electronically) give them something, a document kind of like the contract itself? I've been reading all about licenses all day today and I'm no closer to answering this question. Any words of advice out there?

  so i know for serving static elements (css, js, images, videos etc) you should use CDN since they are spread out throughout the world. but how could i spread out by apache servers? is there an equivalent to CDN but for dynamical pages? or is it the traditional LAMP way. if so, i guess my best option is to find an international hosting provider that hosts in different countries, so the content will be served from the country located nearest the client machine. any suggestions of such hosting providers? or is it best practice to contact different hosting providers in different countries that do not relate to each other. what is the right way to go?

  VMware vSphere 4 SAN storage with multiple data-stores No vCenter I shut-down a virtual machine and using the data-store browser did a copy/paste to copy the VM to a new datastore with additional space. The file copy performance was very poor, and due to time constraints I decided to cancel the copy task. However the copy task showing in the vsphere client can not be cancelled; the cancel option is disabled. Currently I am not able to start the machine in it's original location as the disk files are locked for the copy. How can I abort the copy? I tried deleting the target directory but this did not abort the copy task.

  I've got a pretty much default sites-enabled set up in my nginx on debian squeeze and i'm now trying to get it to serve up my munin graphs on myhost/munin/ Heres the location i've added to the config location /munin { root /var/cache/munin/www/; index index.htm index.html; } And here is the error I recieve: 2012/07/09 23:52:03 [error] 3598#0: *13 "/var/cache/munin/www/munin/index.htm" is not found (2: No such file or directory), client: 93.*.*.*, server: , request: "GET /munin/ HTTP/1.1", host: "" This set up used to 'just work' in apache. I'm new to nginx so a bit lost as to why its adding the extra /munin when looking for the path. Any advice?

  I have most of my audio files on a system shared by most of the people in my family, and i'd like to be able to get them accessable to a headless linux box i control over smb. The share(s) in question are not on a share that requires authentication (and most examples assume so), and i'd like to have them automatically mounted, and accessable on boot. I'd like to only use command line tools - so anything that has x dependancies is out, and shares should be accessable to any user on the system via a mount point OS shouldn't matter, but the "fileserver" is a windows XP system, and i can access the shares without logging in, and the client is a ubuntu 10.04 lts system with a minimal CLI install.

• SCCM? Overkill?

  T. technician in a high school with around 1600 students 250 staff and 800+ client computers mostly running W7 I'm looking for a better way to manage clients (deploy software, track changes, inventory etc) I like the look of SCCM 2012 features but the case studies seem to be aimed at large multi-site infrastructural rather than a single mid sized site. Is SCCM suitable for a mid sized single site or is it aimed at much larger corporations, if so what would be more suitable Just a note about me and my situation. I work as a technician in a school part of a team of 3. My boss seems content with a network that works (just about) not a productive well maintained network that is easy to run and maintain. I'm still fairly early on in my I.T. career so sorry if I'm not up to speed on all products. • Get Directory Size through SFTP

  A client has a managed websever; on this server is an e-commerce script and part of the script dumps a backup every week. The backup is stored on the web server (not in the HTTP route). The ISP takes a copy, and my clients wants to take a copy too. What I am trying to do is before downloading the file I want to be able to calculate the backup directory size - but the only access I have is through SFTP. Is it possible to easily get the directory size and then use this in a PowerShell Script. NOTE: I have written an automatic download script in Powershell, and I want to extend this. Forgive me if this sounds vague I can provide further info if you have any specific questions.
