  This question already has an answer here: How bad is it to use display: none in CSS? 5 answers On my website I have content which is positioned off the screen, and then slides in when you click a button. For example, when you click the news button, content slides in with news. It didn't occur to me that this might be labeled as a black hat SEO technique, because I have content positioned off the screen with CSS that links elsewhere on my site, and a search engine could very easily interpret that as me hiding content for SEO purposes by positioning it off screen. Obviously, my intention was not to hide content, but was to make a sort of UI/UX content slider where content slides into view when a button is clicked. How can I make something to this effect (where content slides in and out), that would not comprise SEO?

• Exposing warnings\errors from data objects (that are also list returned)

  I'm exposing Data objects via service oriented assembly (which on future usages might become a WCF service). The data object is tree designed, as well as formed from allot of properties.Moreover, some services return one objects, others retrieve a list of them (thus disables throwing exceptions). I now want to expose data flow warnings and wondering what's the best way to do it having to things to consider: (1) seperation (2) ease of access. On the one hand, i want the UI team to be able to access a fields warnings (or errors) without having them mapping the field names to an external source but on the other hand, i don't want the warnings "hanged" on the object itself (as i don't see it a correct design). I tought of creating a new type of wrapper for each field, that'll expose events and they'll have to register the one's they care about (but totally not sure) I'll be happy to hear your thoughts. Could you please direct me to a respectful design pattern ? what dp will do best here ? Thank you very much!

• How can I refactor client side functionality to create a product line-like generic design?

  Assume the following situation similar to that of Stack Overflow: I have a system with a front-end that can perform various manipulations on the data (by sending messages to REST back-end): Posting Editing and deleting Adding labels and tags Now in the first version we created it well modularized but the need as of now for 'evolving' the system similar to Stack Overflow. My question is how best to separate the commonality and how to incorporate the variability with respect to the following: Commonality: The above 'functionalities' and sending/receiving the data from the server Look and feel (also a variability as explained below) HTTP verbs associated with the above actions Variability: The RESTful URLs where the requests are sent The text/style of the UI (the commonality is analogous to Stack Overflow - the functionality of upvotes, posting a question remains the same, but the words, the icons, the look and feel is still different across sites) I think this is entirely a client-side code organization/refactoring issue. I'm heavily using jQuery, javascript and backbone for front-end development. My question is how best should I isolate the same to be able to create multiple such aspects to the tool we are currently working on?

• "Yes, but that's niche."

  JavaOne 2012 has come to an end though it feels like it hasn't even started yet! What happened, time is a weird thing. Too many things to report on. James Gosling's appearance at the JavaOne community keynote was seen, by everyone (which is quite a lot) of people I talked to, as the highlight of the conference. It was interesting that the software for the Duke's Choice Award winning Liquid Robotics that James Gosling is now part of and came to talk about is a Swing application that uses the WorldWind libraries. It was also interesting that James Gosling pointed out to the conference: "There are things you can't do using HTML." That brings me to the wonderful counter argument to the above, which I spend my time running into a lot: "Yes, but that's niche." It's a killer argument, i.e., it kills all discussions completely in one fell swoop. Kind of when you're talking about someone and then this sentence drops into the conversation: "Yes, but she's got cancer now." Here's one implementation of "Yes, but that's niche": Person A: All applications are moving to the web, tablet, and mobile phone. That's especially true now with HTML5, which is going to wipe away everything everywhere and all applications are going to be browser based. Person B: What about air traffic control applications? Will they run on mobile phones too? And do you see defence applications running in a browser? Don't you agree that there are multiple scenarios imaginable where the Java desktop is the optimal platform for running applications? Person A: Yes, but that's niche. Here's another implementation, though it contradicts the above [despite often being used by the same people], since JavaFX is a Java desktop technology: Person A: Swing is dead. Everyone is going to be using purely JavaFX and nothing else. Person B: Does JavaFX have a docking framework and a module system? Does it have a plugin system?  These are some of the absolutely basic requirements of Java desktop software once you get to high end systems, e.g., banks, defence force, oil/gas services. Those kinds of applications need a web browser and so they love the JavaFX WebView component and they also love the animated JavaFX charting components. But they need so much more than that, i.e., an application framework. Aren't there requirements that JavaFX isn't meeting since it is a UI toolkit, just like Swing is a UI toolkit, and what they have in common is their lack, i.e., natively, of any kind of application framework? Don't people need more than a single window and a monolithic application structure? Person A: Yes, but that's niche. In other words, anything that doesn't fit within the currently dominant philosophy is "niche", for no other reason than that it doesn't fit within the currently dominant philosophy... regardless of the actual needs of real developers. Saying "Yes, but that's niche", kills the discussion completely, because it relegates one side of the conversation to the arcane and irrelevant corners of the universe. You're kind of like Cobol now, as soon as "Yes, but that's niche" is said. What's worst about "Yes, but that's niche" is that it doesn't enter into any discussion about user requirements, i.e., there's so few that need this particular solution that we don't even need to talk about them anymore. Note, of course, that I'm not referring specifically or generically to anyone or anything in particular. Just picking up from conversations I've picked up on as I was scurrying around the Hilton's corridors while looking for the location of my next presentation over the past few days. It does, however, mean that there were people thinking "Yes, but that's niche" while listening to James Gosling pointing out that HTML is not the be-all and end-all of absolutely everything. And so this all leaves me wondering: How many applications must be part of a niche for the niche to no longer be a niche? And what if there are multiple small niches that have the same requirements? Don't all those small niches together form a larger whole, one that should be taken seriously, i.e., a whole that is not a niche?

  I'm starting to program my very first game, it's a clone of DDR/Stepmania done for research purposes and learning. I (at this early stage) get most of the UI/Music/input work that should be done, but what i still can't grasp is scripting, i've read about Lua and that you shouldn't use it with XNA/Monogame as C# is capable enough, but i cannot get the utility of it. Assuming the needs of my game, ¿What would be the ideal way to implement the input secuences it needs?, i thought of XML/Json, let's say Stage 1 <game> <level id="1"> <step id="1" key="up" time="00:00:01"/> <step id="2" key="left" time="00:00:02"/> </level> </game> Is that a correct implementation? or are there better ways with more benefits?

• Checksum Transformation

  The Checksum Transformation computes a hash value, the checksum, across one or more columns, returning the result in the Checksum output column. The transformation provides functionality similar to the T-SQL CHECKSUM function, but is encapsulated within SQL Server Integration Services, for use within the pipeline without code or a SQL Server connection. As featured in The Microsoft Data Warehouse Toolkit by Joy Mundy and Warren Thornthwaite from the Kimbal Group. Have a look at the book samples especially Sample package for custom SCD handling. All input columns are passed through the transformation unaltered, those selected are used to generate the checksum which is passed out through a single output column, Checksum. This does not restrict the number of columns available downstream from the transformation, as columns will always flow through a transformation. The Checksum output column is in addition to all existing columns within the pipeline buffer. The Checksum Transformation uses an algorithm based on the .Net framework GetHashCode method, it is not consistent with the T-SQL CHECKSUM() or BINARY_CHECKSUM() functions. The transformation does not support the following Integration Services data types, DT_NTEXT, DT_IMAGE and DT_BYTES. ChecksumAlgorithm Property There ChecksumAlgorithm property is defined with an enumeration. It was first added in v1.3.0, when the FrameworkChecksum was added. All previous algorithms are still supported for backward compatibility as ChecksumAlgorithm.Original (0). Original - Orginal checksum function, with known issues around column separators and null columns. This was deprecated in the first SQL Server 2005 RTM release. FrameworkChecksum - The hash function is based on the .NET Framework GetHash method for object types. This is based on the .NET Object.GetHashCode() method, which unfortunately differs between x86 and x64 systems. For that reason we now default to the CRC32 option. CRC32 - Using a standard 32-bit cyclic redundancy check (CRC), this provides a more open implementation. The component is provided as an MSI file, however to complete the installation, you will have to add the transformation to the Visual Studio toolbox by hand. This process has been described in detail in the related FAQ entry for How do I install a task or transform component?, just select Checksum from the SSIS Data Flow Items list in the Choose Toolbox Items window.   To make the Toolbar look native in Ubuntu (like the application in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=sO8hiPreNBg), I don't want to show a border. In my main window of my application I am able to set the property for the border width to zero on the GtkBox under tab "common". But on a dialog (created via "quickly add dialog") there is no option on the GtkBox to set the property under "common". The property for the border width sill not appears under common! What can I do to solve this problem? I tried to create a Window-Element and tried to delete the Dialog-Element. Result: Then I was able to set this property in Glade but I could not do anything with the Window-Element and its Child-Elements (e.g. set the native look for its toolbar) in the corresponding .py-File (for the ui-File) because I destroyed dependencies...

  I am building a Web UI for a device for internet connection and one of the requirements in it is a speed test. I know the basic concept of how speed test works. A file is downloaded for a limited time then the same file is uploaded again and the speed is tracked at regular intervals. Downloading the file is not an issue, but how am I supposed to upload the file without the client knowing that the file is getting uploaded? I've read through a lot of documentation, but I'm still not able to get the answer to how I will upload the file from clients machine without asking him to select the file.

  I'm about to hire a programmer to develop Windows Phone 7 apps. The current app that shall be developed is quite simple. The app will download content from a Web-API. There are two lists to select content. There is a single item content page. Users can rate the content and upload photos. The screens will be produced by our artist. I am pretty sure that most of the available programmers haven't touched WP7 development yet. Now the questions are: What technology is suitable for this kind of app? What technology requires less research, learning and production time? Do you already have experience of limitations of silverlight compared to C#? (I am also thinking of future projects) My guess is that silverlight programmers are more experienced in UI programming than C# coders. Do you feel the same way?

• How to show a minimap in a 3d world

  Got a really typical use-case here. I have large map made up of hexagons and at any given time only a small section of the map is visible. To provide an overview of the complete map, i want to show a small 2d representation of the map in a corner of the screen. What is the recommended approach for this in libgdx? Keep in mind the minimap must be updated when the currently visible section changes and when the map is updated. I've found SpriteBatch, but the warning label on it made me think twice: A SpriteBatch is a pretty heavy object so you should only ever have one in your program. I'm not sure i'm supposed to use the one SpriteBatch that i can have on the minimap, and i'm also not sure how to interpret "heavy" in this context. Another thing to possibly keep in mind is that the minimap will probably be part of a larger UI...is there any way to integrate these two?

  The new MS Office and SharePoint release is just around the corner, and I want to assure everyone that we will provide full support for SP 2010 in our next RadControls release - Q2 2010. We have already put up a page with information about the new SP release. You can find all the information you need at the SharePoint product page on our site. In this post I will talk about the ASP.NET AJAX controls, but as you will see on the product page, we will also offer support for our Silverlight UI controls.   The most important thing I want to share is that the RadEditor for MOSS product will updated for the 2010 version and you can already get a beta version from your account (provided you have a license for the ASP.NET AJAX controls).   What is the recommended way to change the first day of the week to Monday (instead of Sunday, as in the screenshot below)? I couldn't find anything related in Clock Preferences, nor in System - Preferences, or System - Administration. This probably has something to do with tweaking locales, so here's (possibly relevant) output from locale: LANG=en_US.utf8 LC_CTYPE="en_US.utf8" LC_NUMERIC="en_US.utf8" LC_TIME="en_US.utf8" ... LC_ALL= NB: I want to keep English as the UI language both in GNOME and on command line. Dates are currently displayed like this (e.g. ls -l): 2010-10-06 15:32, and I also want to keep that as it is.

• Need explanation of hexagonal architecture

  I am reading about Alistair Cockburn's Hexagonal Architecture http://alistair.cockburn.us/Hexagonal+architecture with interest. One claim he makes is: "Finally, the automated function regression tests detect any violation of the promise to keep business logic out of the presentation layer. The organization can detect, and then correct, the logic leak." I do not understand this point. Is he saying that because the test is headless, then calls to a ui layer will throw exceptions? That doesn't seem to be a very sound test!
