  • Javascript: "Dangling" Reference to DOM element?

    It seems that in Javascript, if you have a reference to some DOM element, and then modify the DOM by adding additional elements to document.body, your DOM reference becomes invalidated. Consider the following code: <html> <head> <script type = "text/javascript"> function work() { var foo = document.getElementById("foo"); alert(foo == document.getElementById("foo")); document.body.innerHTML += "<div>blah blah</div>"; alert(foo == document.getElementById("foo")); } </script> </head> <body> <div id = "foo" onclick='work()'>Foo</div> </body> </html> When you click on the DIV, this alerts "true", and then "false." So in other words, after modifying document.body, the reference to the DIV element is no longer valid. This behavior is the same on Firefox and MSIE. Some questions: Why does this occur? Is this behavior specified by the ECMAScript standard, or is this a browser-specific issue? Note: there's another question posted on stackoverflow that seems to be referring to the same issue, but neither the question nor the answers are very clear.

  • Problem loading scripts from Ajax Response

    The problem is I am using get_info() to make a ajax call to Result.lasso and paste the response in div with id 'test'.I am unable to use the sendForm() function from the page where i am calling the get_info(). I have also tried using different versions of jQuery 1.1.1.3 is working fine.But i am facing the problem while using higher versions of jquery.     I want to submit form and show message about result. update_records initializes alert_message to error message. If success I expect that its value is changed. Than update_records outputs message. But the function always alerts "Error submitting form". What is wrong with this?   • jQuery AJAX with two domains

    OK here is the situation: I have an externally hosted CMS which works great for 99% of our needs. However on the more advanced things I inject my own CSS+JS and do magic. The problem I am running into is loading a simple HTML page from jQuery.ajax() calls. It appears to work in the sense that no warnings or errors are thrown; however in my success handler (which IS ran), the response is blank! I have been scratching my head for the whole morning trying to figure this out and the only thing I can think of is that is has something to do with the cross domain issue (even though it appears to work). Injected JavaScript: $(document).ready(function() { doui(); }); function doui() { $.ajax({ url: 'http://apps.natronacounty-wy.gov/css/feecalc/ui.htm', cache: false, success: ajax_createUI, charset: "utf-8", error: function(e) { alert(e); } }); } function ajax_createUI(data, textStatus) { alert(data); $("#ajax-content").html(data); } My ajax_createUI() success handler is called and textStatus is "success"; however data is empty. This JS file resides @ http://apps.natronacounty-wy.gov/css/js/feecalc.js however the CMS website (which gets the JS injected into it) resides @ http://www.natronacounty-wy.gov/ Am I just being stupid or is it a bug that it looks like it should be working but isn't?

    What are some current "rules of thumb" for implementing JQuery namespaces to host general purpose utility functions? I have a number of JavaScript utility methods scattered in various files that I'd like to consolidate into one (or more) namespaces. What's the best way to do this? I'm currently looking at two different syntaxes, listed in order of preference: //****************************** // JQuery Namespace syntax #1 //****************************** if (typeof(MyNamespace) === "undefined") { MyNamespace = {}; } MyNamespace.SayHello = function () { alert("Hello from MyNamespace!"); } MyNamespace.AddEmUp = function (a, b) { return a + b; } //****************************** // JQuery Namespace syntax #2 //****************************** if (typeof (MyNamespace2) === "undefined") { MyNamespace2 = { SayHello: function () { alert("Hello from MyNamespace2!"); }, AddEmUp: function (a, b) { return a + b; } }; } Syntax #1 is more verbose but it seems like it would be easier to maintain down the road. I don't need to add commas between methods, and I can left align all my functions. Are there other, better ways to do this?

    Hi. I'm using the Flowplayer Flash video player to play MP4 videos inside an AnythingSlider. I need to detect when the user has clicked the start button on the video so to stop the slideshow and allow the user to view the video.   • Help with jQuery Ajax calling ASMX which returns string.

I have the following jQuery ajax call setup: function Testing() { var result = ''; $.ajax({ url: 'BookingUtils.asmx/GetNonBookableSlots', dataType: 'text', error: function(error) { alert('GetNonBookableSlots Error'); }, success: function(data) { alert('GetNonBookableSlots'); result = data; } }); return result; } Here is the web service I'm trying to call: [WebMethod] public string GetNonBookableSlots() { return "fhsdfuhsiufhsd"; } When I run the jQuery code, there is no error or success event fired (none of the alerts are called). In fact, nothing happens at all, the javascript code just moves on to return statement at the end. I put a breakpoint in the web service code and it does get hit, but when I leave that method I end up on the return statement anyway. Can someone give me some tips on how I should be configuring the ajax call correctly, as I feel that I'm doing this wrong. The webservice just needs to return a string, no XML or JSON involved.   • Javascript getElementsByTagName broken firefox?

    I'm getting the weirdest issues with Javascript in Firefox today. I'm trying to manipulate some table rows, but .getElementsByTagName("tr"); is pulling back junk. dynamicTable.tableBody = dynamicTable.getElementsByTagName("tbody")[0]; var tableRows = dynamicTable.tableBody.getElementsByTagName("TR"); var actualTableRows = new Array(); for(var i in tableRows) { var row = tableRows[i]; alert(row.tagName); if(row.tagName == "TR"){ actualTableRows.push(row); } } dynamicTable.bodyRows = actualTableRows; The puzzling part of course is my temporary hack to fix the error. For some reason .getElementsByTagName("tr") is pulling back some functions also. Incidently the alert above goes something like this TR TR TR TR undefined undefined undefined. The code I wanted was something like this dynamicTable.bodyRows = dynamicTable.tableBody.getElementsByTagName("tr"); But then bodyrows does not contain just tr elements it has the aforementioned junk in it. Any thoughts?

  • IE8 claims my page has an error, firefox doesn't, and I can't find any error. Help!

    This is something of a follow-up question to my question here. You can find the HTML source in a text file here. When I load that page in IE8, I get the "Done, but with errors on page." message in my status bar. The detail view shows Expected identifier sms Line: 147 Code: 0 Char: 67 and I see absolutely no problems anywhere near there. In IE8, the page is still behaving erratically w/r/t the randomly losing focus as mentioned in my other question. When I load the same exact page in Firefox (using Firebug) the console shows no errors and the page works perfectly. Any thoughts on what's going on here? This is driving me nuts and making me want to give up on even trying to write an IE friendly page. Edit: Thanks for all the comments! This page is written as a JSP, so I edit in Eclipse. I found an Eclipse warning about the onblur event for the username field. I switched it from onblur="alert(document.activeElement + ' class:' + document.activeElement.class)" to onblur="alert(document.activeElement)" and that made the bizarre IE page error vanish. I had been trying to give more info (namely, its CSS class) about specifically which element is stealing focus - to my own detriment, apparently, since Javascript was interpreting the '.class' part in the Java(script) sense. And, no, the page doesn't validate. But the errors were mostly/all ones that just didn't make sense, such as Line 14, Column 41: Attribute "LANGUAGE" is not a valid attribute. Did you mean "language"? to which I say, WTF?! But I'm still stuck trying to figure out why, as I enter text in the username & password fields, focus randomly switches to a div (working on figuring out which div currently). Edit 2: It's the div between the two "global nav" comments, at the very top of the body. Still no idea why it's happening, though.

  • Why does iOS 5 fail to connect to a server running JDK 1.6, but not JDK 1.5

    We have a Java Socket Server listening on an SSLSocket (port 443) and an iOS application that connects with it. When running on iOS 5.1, the application stopped working when we upgraded the Java version of the server from JDK 1.5 to 1.6 (or 1.7). The app connects just fine to JDK 5 and 6 when running on iOS 6. The iOS app is reporting an error: -9809 = errSSLCrypto. On the Java side, we get javax.net.ssl.SSLException: Received fatal alert: close_notify. On the Java server side, we have enabled all the available cipher suites. On the client side we have tested enabling several different suites, although we have yet to complete a test involving each one individually enabled. Right now, it is failing when we use TLS_DH_anon_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA although it has failed with others and we are starting to think it's not the suite. Here is the debug output.     I am working on a class to create a fairly complex custom element. I want to be able to define element attributes (mainly CSS) as I am creating the elements. So naturally, I am assuming that buttonDiv is undefined.. I put alert(ex + " " + __el); in __apply_settings() to verify what I was working with. Surprisingly enough, the element is a div.     On my form I have a discount field that accepts a dollar amount to be taken off of the total bill (HTML generated in PHP): echo "<input id=\"discount\" class=\"text\" type=\"text\" name=\"discount\" onkeypress=\"return currency(this, event)\" onchange=\"currency_format(this)\" onfocus=\"on_focus(this)\" onblur=\"on_blur(this); calculate_bill()\"/><br/><br/>\n"; The JavaScript function calculate_bill calculates the bill and takes off the discount amount as long as the discount amount is less than the total bill: if(discount != ''){ if(discount - 0.01 > total_bill){ window.alert('Discount Cannot Be Greater Than Total Bill'); document.form.discount.focus(); } else{ total_bill -= discount; } } The problem is that even that when the discount is more than the total bill focus is not being returned to the discount field. I have tried calling the calculate_bill function with onchange but neither IE or Firefox will return focus to the discount field when I do it like that. When I call calculate_bill with onblur it works in IE, but still does not work in Firefox. I have attempted to use a confirmation box instead of an alert box as well, but that didn't work either (plus I don't want two buttons, I only an "OK" button). How can I ensure focus is returned to the discount field after a user has left that field by clicking on another field or tabbing IF the discount amount is larger than the total bill?

    I am making an extension which should take a link as the user input only once. Then the entire extension keeps using that link on various functions in the JS file. When the user changes it, the value accessed by the js file also changes accordingly.   • Java Script in Rails 3.1 works only in certain parts. Any idea why?

    This might seem a bit weird, but since I am new in RoR and cannot find any similar questions I thought you might know. The situation is that JavaScript does not work throughout my whole site. For instance. For the sake of checking, I place a link with an alert function in the footer. It did not work at the beginning, it felt like the JS was disabled(but it wasn't). But eventually it worked. Now it works in most the pages but it does not work in one that there is also an 'autocomplete' field. Of course, this autocomplete field does not work either. That could lead you to think that there is something wrong with the autocomplete code. However this same code is working in the sidebar. Any ideas why? Could it have anything to do with the fact that one day my assets folder appeared empty? After installing the gmaps4rails gem I realized that all my Js and CSS files were gone from my assests folder. Ok, it might have happened long before and I just realized at that point. I don't really know. Here in the root you can see that the 'Hola sip' click at the button works. here it works However, here same link does not trigger the alert function. here it doesn't
