• Setup: Eclipse in Ubuntu with Apache2 and Subversion

  Trying to setup Eclispe. I am running ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick). Apache2.2.16 Subversion 1.6.12 The Eclipse help/about/installed software says: Eclipse Platform 3.5.2 Subclipse 1.0.0 Version Control with Subversion 1.1.1 The Subclips wiki I followed is here I have installed the libsvn-java app as discussed. I added the line "-Djava.library.path=/usr/lib/jni" to the eclipse.ini file I checked the Eclipse help/about/confirguration settings and both of these lines are listed: eclipse.vmargs=-Djava.library.path=/usr/lib/jni java.library.path=/usr/lib/jni I checked that those files are in those directories. Still, when I check the preferencesteamsvn an error dialog shows: Failed to load JavaHL Library. These are the errors that were encountered: no libsvnjavahl.1 in java.library.path Incompatible JavaHL library loaded 1.3.x or later required I followed the "Testing JavaHL libraries" troubleshooting section at the bottom of the wiki: I downloaded the tarbal and ran it in a folder on my desktop with no problems. Then, I followed the instructions and placed that file INSIDE the path (usr/lib/jni/testJavaHL) and ran it from there. There are 50 tests performed and each one of them came back with this same error (posting only one for brevity): 50) testCommitRevprops(org.tigris.subversion.javahl.BasicTests)java.io.FileNotFoundException: /usr/lib/jni/testJavaHL/local_tmp/greek_files/iota (No such file or directory) at java.io.FileOutputStream.open(Native Method) at java.io.FileOutputStream.<init>(FileOutputStream.java:209) at java.io.FileOutputStream.<init>(FileOutputStream.java:160) at org.tigris.subversion.javahl.WC.materialize(WC.java:70) at org.tigris.subversion.javahl.SVNTests.buildGreekFiles(SVNTests.java:303) at org.tigris.subversion.javahl.SVNTests.setUp(SVNTests.java:222) at org.tigris.subversion.javahl.RunTests.main(RunTests.java:111) FAILURES!!! Tests run: 50, Failures: 0, Errors: 50 Any ideas as to how/why the "local_tmp/greek_files/iota" is appended to the directory? I assume that's my problem.. I'm also having a problem with newrepository location = ...as the directory location of my svn repository is one level above the home directory - which is prepended to whatever I place in the dialog box - resulting in this error: svn: '/home/ricalsin/file:/home/svn' does not exist Thank you for any help.

• No password is complex enough

  I have one user in my AD domain who seems to not be able to self-select a password. I may have another one, but they're on a different enough password-expiration schedule that I can't remember who it is right now. I can set a password via ADU&C just fine, but when he tries it via C-A-D he gets the "doesn't meet complexity" message. Figuring he was just doing something like 'pAssword32', I did some troubleshooting of my own and sure enough it doesn't want to take a password that way. He's one of our users that habitually uses a local account and then maps drives using his AD credentials so he doesn't get the your password will expire in 4 days, maybe you should change it prompts, so he's a frequent "my password expired, can you fix it" flyer. I don't want to keep having him set it via ADU&C over my shoulder every N days. I'm just fine setting temp passwords of 48 characters of keyboard-slamming and letting him change it something memorable. My environment is at the Windows 2008 R2 functional level, and I am using fine-grained password policies. In fact, I have two such policies: For normal users (minimum length, remembered passwords) For special utility accounts The password complexities I've tried match both policies for length and char-set selection. The permissions on the User object themselves look normal, SELF does indeed have the "Change Password" right. Is there some other place I should be looking for things that can affect this?

• Scaling ratio of two different resolutions

  I have two different resolutions, the original one is 567x756 (wXh), the one which I want to display is 768x1024 (wXh). How to find out the scaling ratio for these two resolutions? For example if the font size used in 567x756 resolution is 7 pts then whats the values I should multiply with the font size (7 pts) to display the text in 768x1024 resolution. • Linux: prevent outgoing TCP flood

  I run several hundred webservers behind loadbalancers, hosting many different sites with a plethora of applications (of which I have no control). About once every month, one of the sites gets hacked and a flood script is uploaded to attack some bank or political institution. In the past, these were always UDP floods which were effectively resolved by blocking outgoing UDP traffic on the individual webserver. Yesterday they started flooding a large US bank from our servers using many TCP connections to port 80. As these type of connections are perfectly valid for our applications, just blocking them is not an acceptable solution. I am considering the following alternatives. Which one would you recommend? Have you implemented these, and how? Limit on the webserver (iptables) outgoing TCP packets with source port != 80 Same but with queueing (tc) Rate limit outgoing traffic per user per server. Quite an administrative burden, as there are potentially 1000's of different users per application server. Maybe this: how can I limit per user bandwidth? Anything else? Naturally, I'm also looking into ways to minimize the chance of hackers getting into one of our hosted sites, but as that mechanism will never be 100% waterproof, I want to severely limit the impact of an intrusion.   When editing cells in jqGrid, specifically using a select pull-down to edit a cell, how does one make the current selection the current choice for that cell? In my page I have a cell where edittype:'select' is set but when one clicks on that row the value for that cells automatically changes to the first entry that my AJAX call returns. Is there something within JQGrid that needs to be set or does the object I send to jqGrid have to be of a certain format to do so?

• Joomla - output ' instead of \'

  Hello there, all of my Joomla site's contents shows apostrophes as \' instead of just '. Now my head is spinning from looking at all the million places where individual components and joomla itself does add/remove slashes and deals with magic quotes and all of this... I also found that one can rather easily write one's own OutputFilter for the patTemplate, so I thought maybe I would just do a str_replace of all \' to '. Doesn't sound right. How to deal with these apostrophes?

• Should I use "Raid 5 + spare" or "Raid 6"?

  What is "Raid 5 + Spare" (excerpt from User Manual, Sect 4.17.2, P.54): RAID5+Spare: RAID 5+Spare is a RAID 5 array in which one disk is used as spare to rebuild the system as soon as a disk fails (Fig. 79). At least four disks are required. If one physical disk fails, the data remains available because it is read from the parity blocks. Data from a failed disk is rebuilt onto the hot spare disk. When a failed disk is replaced, the replacement becomes the new hot spare. No data is lost in the case of a single disk failure, but if a second disk fails before the system can rebuild data to the hot spare, all data in the array will be lost. What is "Raid 6" (excerpt from User Manual, Sect 4.17.2, P.54): RAID6: In RAID 6, data is striped across all disks (minimum of four) and a two parity blocks for each data block (p and q in Fig. 80) is written on the same stripe. If one physical disk fails, the data from the failed disk can be rebuilt onto a replacement disk. This Raid mode can support up to two disk failures with no data loss. RAID 6 provides for faster rebuilding of data from a failed disk. Both "Raid 5 + spare" and "Raid 6" are SO similar ... I can't tell the difference. When would "Raid 5 + Spare" be optimal? And when would "Raid 6" be optimal"? The manual dumbs down the different raid with 5 star ratings. "Raid 5 + Spare" only gets 4 stars but "Raid 6" gets 5 stars. If I were to blindly trust the manual I would conclude that "Raid 6" is always better. Is "Raid 6" always better?

• Windows 7 ICS client web failure

  I have several windows 7 PC's connected on a LAN via a hub. One has a Verizon 3G connection and works great. I have internet connection sharing enabled on it, which automagically set the LAN connection to 192.168.137.1 and enabled DHCP. I am trying to get the client PC's working one at a time. The others are off. The client is able to: Get an IP via DHCP with correct settings. Ping any web address I can throw at it, so DNS and routing are working. Windows update works. But web sites hang in IE. All but google.com! I type www.msn.com, microsoft.com, amazon.com, etc. etc. All ping via a cmd window but IE just hangs - it says web site found but the green progress bar just slowly creeps and no content displays. www.google.com comes up even after clearing browser and dns cache. I am pulling my hair out - what am I missing? EDIT: After some more gyrations with a router I'm back to ICS. Same symptoms, only now I have an answer to Andrew's question, YES I can do Google searches but clicking on any of the result links hangs! Let one sit for half an hour with no timeout or error.

• What does "incoming" and "outgoing" traffic mean?

  I've seen many resources explaining how to set up a server's firewall to allow incoming and outgoing traffic on HTTP standard ports (80 and 443), but I can't figure out why I would need either of them. Do I need to unblock both for a "regular" web site to work? For file uploads to work? Are there situations where it would be advisable to unblock one and leave the other blocked? Sorry if that's a basic question, but I couldn't find it explained anywhere (also I'm not a native english speaker). I know in a "regular" web site the client is always the one who initiates a request, so I'm assuming a web server must accept incoming traffic on those ports, and my common sense tells me the server is allowed to send a response without unblocking anything else (otherwise it wouldn't make sense to have two types of rules). Is that correct? But what is an outgoing web (service) traffic, and what would be its use? AFAIK if the server wanted to initiate a connection with another machine, the specific port that matters is the one in the other end (i.e. the destination port would be 80), on its end any free port could be used (the source port would be random). I can open HTTP requests from my server (using wget for instance) without unblocking anything. So I'm assuming my concepts of "incoming" and "outgoing" are wrong somehow.
