• MVC Forms Authentication with custom database

  I'm trying to get forms authentication working for an mvc site. I have a custom database with a users table, and I would like to do my own password validation. I am logging in my user like this: if (PasswordHasher.Hash(password) == dataUser.Password) { FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(email, true); return true; } The problem is, when the session expires obviously the user has to login again. I am thinking I should be storing this Auth cookie in my users table? Update: I'm obviously in desperate need of more education in this area. I just noticed that the user stays authenticated even after an iisreset. I guess what I'm asking is how can I get persistent and non persistent authentication working properly. I want a user to not have to login again if they click "remember", and if they don't then their authentication should expire when the forms authentication is set to expire.

• How can I retrieve cookies for webserver A when my project is deployed on webserver B?

  The project is multiple modules, each of them is deployed to a separate webserver. All of them on the same mainframe. (same IP address) I have a main menu where I login and then list all the available modules on all servers. From here I can click and go to any of them modules. I send cookies in the response (when logging in, say Server A), then on Server B (one of the modules) when I want to go back to the main menu, I check the cookies to see if the user is logged in. The problem is, Server B isn't seeing cookies generated by Server A. So each time I return to main menu, the user will be logged out. Is there anyway to store cookies to be used by multiple virtual webservers (on same IP) or any other idea?

• How do I mimic Windows Explorer multi-select/drag-n-drop behavior in a DataGridView?

  I'm trying to mimic the way Windows Explorer handles multiple selection. In a default DataGridView, you can select multiple items using Ctrl-click. But if you release the Ctrl key and then try and drag/drop the selected items, it clears the selected items and only selects the "hit" row. I found the following solution somewhere online. protected override OnMouseDown(MouseEventArgs e) { int hitRowIndex = HitTest(e.X, e.Y).RowIndex; if(!SelectedRows.Contains(Rows[hitRowIndex])) { base.OnMouseDown(); } } However, this causes other side effects. With the CTRL key pressed and mousing down on a selected item, the item remains selected. This makes sense because the mousedown event is bypassed if the row clicked on is selected. From looking at the behavior of Windows Explorer, it looks like the deselection of an item with the CTRL key held is not handled until the MouseUp event. Has anyone tried to do this?

  I have a site that allows users to create a saying and then users "like" those sayings on Facebook. http://www.likeylikey.net/ I got a friend to throw up this simple code in less than 2 hours so it's basic. He knows little to nothing regarding the Open Graph API. Basically, I want to know how I can programmatically store how many times a page has been liked so I can list a "Top 10, most liked pages" list. Right now the index shows a list of all created pages and now I just wish to show the 10 most liked but I need a way of pulling that information from Facebook. Is this possible?

• Query to add a column depending of outcome of there columns

  I have a user table 'users' that has fields like: id first_name last_name ... and have another table that determines relationships: user_id friend_id user_accepted friend_accepted .... I would like to generate a query that selects all the users but also add another field/column say 'network_status' that depends on the values of user_accepted and fiend_accepted. For example, if user_accepted is true friend_accepted is false I want the 'network_status' field to say 'request sent'. Can I possibly do this in one query? (I would prefer not to user if/else inside the query but if that's the only way so be it)

  I constantly find myself creating sites using newer technologies (such as HTML 5 and CSS 3, then adding either backwards compatibility layers or porting entirely to XHTML 1.0 and CSS 2.1. This process often involves replacing CSS with sprite images and adding in flash components for advanced asynchronous support. My question is when can I can start to use the modern standards exclusively. Do I need to wait until Internet Explorer 9 is released or is it acceptable to request users switch to a "better" browser? Furthermore, if dropping compatibility for non HTML 5 browsers is an option, is it reasonable to ask mainstream users to install the Google Frame Frame? Thanks.

  I am very new to object orientated javascript, with experience writing gui's in python and java. I am trying to create html tables that I can place in locations throughout a webpage. Each html table would have two css layouts that control if it is selected or not. I can write all of the interaction if I only have one table. It gets confusing when I have multiple tables. I am wondering how to place these tables throughout a blank webpage and then access the tables individually. I think I am having trouble understanding how inheritance and hierarchy works in javascript/html. NOTE: I am not asking how to make a table. I am trying to dynamically create multiple tables and place them throughout a webpage. Then access their css independently and change it (move them to different locations or change the way the look, independently of the other tables).

  I have a db query that'll cause a full table scan using a like clause and came upon a question I was curious about... Which of the following should run faster in Mysql or would they both run at the same speed? Benchmarking might answer it in my case, but I'd like to know the why of the answer. The column being filtered contains a couple thousand characters if that's important. SELECT * FROM users WHERE data LIKE '%=12345%' or SELECT * FROM users WHERE data LIKE '%proileId=12345%' I can come up for reasons why each of these might out perform the other, but I'm curious to know the logic.

• Authlogic Help! Registering a new user when currently logged-in as a user not working.

  Hi Just as a disclaimer I am new to rails and programming in general so apologize for misunderstanding something obvious. I have Authlogic with activation up and running. So for my site I would like my users who are logged in to be able to register other users. The new user would pick their login and password through the activation email, but the existing user needs to put them in by email, position and a couple other attributes. I want that to be done by the existing user. The problem I am running into, if I am logged in and then try and create a new user it just tries to update the existing user and doesn't create a new one. I am not sure if there is some way to fix this by having another session start??? If that is even right/possible I wouldn't know how to go about implementing it. I realize without knowing fully about my application it may be difficult to answer this, but does this even sound like the right way to go about this? Am I missing something here?   Is it possible to cache a query or report the first time it is run? It seems that opening a report will re-query the datasource. For certain queries, the data source does not change frequently enough that I'd be worried about a cache being out of date (users are notified when the database changes), and it would be much easier for the users to be able to open the report instantly rather than having to wait several minutes every time they want to see the data (though I realize if they close the file the caches will be lost - that's OK). Data comes from an ODBC connection to Oracle, using Access 2003.

  It must be a fairly standard wheel, so I'd rather not reinvent it. Create/modify/delete users. Ditto their passwords & maybe enforce password change every X days. Also, create groups, like "sales", "support", etc and add/remove users. The only unique part should be what they have permission to do (visit certain parts of the site after login, etc) And I'd like to store admin data in an ODBC compliant database (MySql to start with, but I may move on). Is this a new wheel? There doesn't seem to be much of anything on SourceForge, but if I could find something established and trusted I wouldn't even mind paying a few $100 as a trade of for the time needed to develop & test it.

I also have several other tables in my database which represent "skill sets" that contain records denoting a particular skill. 1) Am I correct in plotting this as a "many-to-many" relationship?   i'm a newbie to server-side programming, so please forgive me if this gets messy. i've been contracted to create a web service to allow authenticated users to access a database. users have to enter a login and password. been reading and reading about REST vs SOAP, and i thought i'd settled on a RESTful design when i came across this statement: "Data that needs to be secure should not be sent as parameters in URIs." this seems like a major demerit against a RESTful approach. i'm aware that with https the password would be encrypted to prevent man-in-the-middle interception, but that leaves the server logs and client history as possible exposure points. is there a RESTful solution out there for this problem, or do i need to go SOAPy? any advice appreciated.

I am developing a linked list wherein multiple classes have multiple pointers to like classes. Each time a new class instantiates, it needs to check its parent's list to make sure it is included. This work great on my development machine but after deployment, to access the site i have to go through a VPN-connention and then remote desktop to the same server that the IIS is running on and use a web-browser there. Basically I may send one notification per week globally ie/ each user get the same message and they are not personal in nature. What is the best way to achieve this?   I'm building three web applications in .NET that will all share a users database and login information. Lets pretend that application 1 is the "parent" application and applications "A" and "B" are the "child" applications. All users have to be logged into application 1 to have access to applications A and B. Authorization, Authentication, and MachineKey sections of all web configs are present and work correctly. I have the correct web.config settings in all applications to achieve Single Sign On except one problem remains: what do I put in the "loginUrl" attribute of the forms tag in Applications A and B. Assume that the url for the login to application 1 is "www.johnsapp.com/login.aspx" How can I get applications A and B to send the user back to application 1 for authentication using only settings in web.config?

  I'm trying to generate rating place table using following receipt http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1776821/assign-places-in-the-rating-mysql-php but my database is high loaded. I tried not to create table, but use MEMORY TABLE and update it using following SQL query insert into tops (uid) select uid from users order by exp desc; but got the following MySQL error Deadlock found when trying to get lock; try restarting transaction because there are too many queries until SQL select is being executed. How to solve this problem? P.S. CREATE TABLE tops as SELECT work almost fine except high server load... up to load average: 50 if tops are non-memory table. My table users has near 4.5 millions of rows. Thanks for any advices.
