• Google app engine sessions now supported???

  Hi, I thought google app engine did not support sessions (last time I checked was a few months ago). Now I was searching again for it and saw this: http://code.google.com/appengine/docs/java/config/appconfig.html#Enabling_Sessions says it supports: javax.servlet.http.HttpSession does this mean we have servlet session support now? If so, does anyone have an example of using this? I wanted to create my own User class and support user login and session management (I know app engine already supports this for google users, but wanted my own users for various requirements) Thanks!

• How can I search based on distance with the Google Maps API?

  So here's the issue... I have a field where users can type in their address (which will be GeoCoded via Google Maps API). I have several addresses of widgets in my database (saved as address.. again can easily be geocoded). What I need is for the user to type in their address and for a list of my widgets to come up based on distance from their address. I have THOUSANDS of addresses for my widgets and users have an infinite number of addresses obviously. Any ideas? Thanks.

• Which PHP calendar will suit my needs? Or build my own?

  There are so many web based calendars out there that I'm not sure which will best suit my purposes. I want to create an events calendar, which I suppose looks and functions in much the same way as google calendar. But users shouldn't need to sign up for a gmail account or a google account. Users of my social network website should be able to create events in the calendar and share it with other friends in their "friend network". In month, year or day views, you can mouse hover events to see a bubble dialog that lists events in detail. People need to pay a monthly fee to use my website (not sure if this prevents me from using google apps). So is something like Google Calendar the way to go? Or are there other php/javascript calendars out there that already meet my needs? Or will it just save me more time to build my own?

• compiling QGIS Plugin using make

  On a fresh mac os x 10.8 install, i've Quantum GIS Installed from Kingchaos binaries and running fine. I'm trying to develop a plugin for QGIS, and using Plugin Builder. The skel that Plugin Builder, produces, should work off-the-shelf, but it does not compile using the makefile. Somewhere python can't find (pyuic.py), and it searches for (/Users/kyngchaos/...), path. • integrating facebook auth into my web form app

  Hi, I would like to allow my users to authorise my app with their fb on registration. All of the examples i see redirect users to the fb canvas page after authorisation, but i only want this to be a step in the registration process. Essentially, i want an icon they can click that would open up a new window where they can login to fb and a simple postback to the registration page where i would detect the login and hide the login button. Any ideas on how I can achieve this using the facebook c# sdk? Thanks and Merry Christmas :)

  There is one server with multiple clients. The clients are viewing subsets of the servers entire data. If the data that a client is viewing changes, the client should be informed of the changes so that it displays the current data. Example: Two clients are viewing a list of users in an administration screen. One client adds a new user to the list and modifies the permissions of another user. The other client sees the changes propagated to their view. In the client side code I would like the users list to be updated by the framework itself, raising changed events such that it will be redrawn - similar to 'cells' or dataflow. I am looking specifically for a .NET or java implementation.

  I'm using asp.net mvc and creating a public website. I need to keep track of users that are online. I see that the standard way in asp.net of doing this is to keep track of LastActivityDate. My question is when should I update this? If I update it every time the users clicks somewhere, I will feel a performance draw back.   I have two tables/collections; Users and Groups. A user can be a member of any number of groups and a user can also be an owner of any number of groups. In a relational database I'd probably have a third table called UserGroups with a UserID column, a GroupID column and an IsOwner column. I'm using MongoDB and I'm sure there is a different approach for this kind of relationship in a document database. Should I embed the list of groups and groups-as-owner inside the Users table as two arrays of ObjectIDs? Should I also store the list of members and owners in the Groups table as two arrays, effectively mirroring the relationship causing a duplication of relationship information? Or is a bridging UserGroups table a legitimate concept in document databases for many to many relationships? Thanks

Users have and belong to many Galleries, and each gallery has a 'creator' that is designated by the gallery's user_id field. So to get the 5 latest galleries a user is in, I can do something like: included_in = @user.galleries.order('created_at DESC').uniq.first(5) # SELECT DISTINCT "galleries".* FROM "galleries" INNER JOIN "galleries_users" ON "galleries"."id" = "galleries_users"."gallery_id" WHERE "galleries_users"."user_id" = 10 ORDER BY created_at DESC LIMIT 5 and to get the 5 latest galleries they've created, I can do: created = Gallery.where(user_id: id).order('created_at DESC').uniq.first(5) # SELECT DISTINCT "galleries".* FROM "galleries" WHERE "galleries"."user_id" = 10 ORDER BY created_at DESC LIMIT 5 I want to display these two together, so that it's the 5 latest galleries that they've created OR they're in. Something like the equivalent of: (included_in + created).order('created_at DESC').uniq.first(5) Does anyone know how to construct an efficient query or post-query loop that does this?

  I have two web applications (A) and (B). (A) is my primary web application. (B) is purely for content storage, such as file uploads by users of (A). What's best way to securely retrieve data from (B) into (A) but in a way that does not expose the data in (B) to potential discovery by third-parties over the public internet or nosy users of (A)? For example, if I use a HTML form POST from (A) to (B) to retrieve user data, and have a hidden form field called user_id=1, then someone could simply change this to user_id=2 and see the content owned by another user of the application.   I'm trying to have a model/table with duplicate information in it. The reason for this is so that the same data can be written to the table under different users and found for each user. However, I want a quick easy way to identify which information is a duplicate of other information. I think the best way to do this would be to have an item_id of sorts that increments with each "set" of entries to the table. Is there a way to do this without including another table that stores the information without attributing it to users?

• How can I animate between states in a programmatic skin? [FLEX]

  I have a button with the various states (up/over/down etc) that uses a skin file to render the display. I want to achieve animation between the states. For instance, between the change from 'up' to 'over' I want to fade in a color and a border. The way I am doing this at the moment is to use viewstates and animate between them using transitions and the mx:AnimateProperty. However, using this method I can only animate one property per viewstate. So only the border, or the color can be animated. Does anyone know how I can achieve multiple animations on multiple properties of a programmatic button skin? Thanks in advance! Note: I have looked into using tweener but cannot see how it would help my situation

  I use VS2010,C# to develop an ASP.NET web site, my customers want me to have their pages like this: mysite.com/customer (in fact they call mysite/customer/default.aspx) so I've manually created several folders for each customer, and inserted a default.aspx file in the folder so that users can view customer page by typing mysite.com/customer is there a better way for performing this scenario? I don't want to have mysite.com/customer1.aspx, I want to have mysite.com/customer1, is there anyway that I can remove folders (and their containing default.aspx files) and generate something automatic using my customers database? should I use URL rewriting? is there anyway that I can create page mysite.com/customer1.aspx, and users can view it by typing mysite.com/customer1? I think it is possible to rewrite URLs in web.config, but I don't want to do it manually in web.config as my pages would increase in a daily basis thanks

  I'm working on a PHP web application that let's users network with each other, book events, message etc... I launched it a few months ago and at the moment, there's only about 100 users. I set up the application on a VPS with ubuntu 9.10, apache 2, mysql 5 and php 5. I had 360 Mb of RAM, but upgraded to 720 MB a few minutes ago. Lately, my web application has been experiencing outages due to excessive memory usage. From what I can tell in error logs, it seems the server automatically kills apache processes that consume too much memory. As a result, I upgraded memory from 360 MB to 720 MB as a stop-gap measure. So my question is, how do I go about resolving these outage issues? How do I know if my website's need for more memory is due to poor code or if it's part of the website's natural growth? What's the most efficient way to determine which PHP scripts consume the most memory?

• Rails: Best practice to store user settings?

  Hi, I'm wondering what the best way is to store user settings? For a web 2.0 app I want users to be able to select certain settings. At the moment is it only when to receive email notifications. The easiest way would be to just create a Model "Settings" and have a column for every setting and then have a 1-1 relationship with users. But is there a pattern to solve this better? Is it maybe better to store the info in the user table itself? Or should I use a table with "settings_name" and "settings_value" to be completely open about the type of settings stored there (without having to run any migrations when adding options)? What is your opinion? Thanks

  I have mistyped a path and instead of c:\foo.txt wrote c:foo.txt. I expected it to either fail or to resolve to c:\foo.txt, but instead it seems to be resolved to foo.txt in a current user's home folder.   My situation: We have a mobile version of our website, and want to start redirecting mobile users to it. The plan is to do this in Apache httpd.conf or .htaccess, using something like this: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} (iPhone|Blackberry|...) RewriteRule (.*) mobile/$1 However we want there to be a way for users to override our default action of redirecting them. One way we thought to do it was to show a link on the mobile site directing back to the regular site, and store a cookie when they use that link. • Facebook Error: "The client token cannot be used for this API" - works on DEV and STAGE but not on LIVE app?

  I've built a notification sending system that sends notifications to all users of our app, using the app access token. This system is currently running on my localhost. When I configure it with the appid and appsecret for my dev and stage environments, it works fine. But when I put in the appid and appsecret of the LIVE app, I get this error: {"message":"The client token cannot be used for this API", "type":"OAuthException", "code":190} So what's different between dev and live? Dev and Stage are in sandbox mode, Live is not. So I tried disabling sandbox mode on Dev/Stage and they continue to function fine. Dev works fine, Stage works fine, Live gives this error. All other code is the same except for the appid, appsecret, and redirect_uri (changing it to match the domain of each environment). I have checked this post, but unfortunately resetting our appsecret on a site with 1,000,000 users is not something we can do at the moment (too much other functionality relies on it).

  My java application functionality is to provide reference data (basically loads lots of data from xml files into hashmap) and hence we request for one such data from the hashmap based on a id and we have such multiple has map for different set of business data. The problem is that when i tried executing the java application for the same request multiple times, the response times are different like 31ms, 48ms, 72ms, 120ms, 63ms etc. hence there is a considerable gap between the min and max time taken for the execution to complete. Ideally, i would expect the response times to be like, 63ms, 65ms, 61ms, 70ms, 61ms, but in my case the variation of the response time for the same request is varying hugely. I had used a opensource profile to understand if there is any extra execution of the methods or memory leak, but as per my understanding there was no problem. Please let me know what could be the reasons and how can i address this problem.
