• DB2: Won't allow parameterize fetch first X rows only

  Although in Oracle DB its is allowed to parametrize the number of rows that the query can fetch by adding to the query: select ... from ... where ... and rownum <= @MaximumRecords I can't add similar condition to acuivalent query running in DB2: It is allowed to add: select ... from ... where ... fetch first 500 rows only (where there is fixed number of rows) but not: select ... from ... where ... fetch first :1 rows only (:1 == @MaximumRecords) Is someone aware of a solution/work-around to this problem?

The error (System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden) occurs at HttpWebResponse response = (HttpWebResponse)request.GetResponse(); I have managed in reading data after authenticating, but not if I also send POST data. What's wrong with this?

• Sqlite issues with HTC Desire HD

  Recently I have been getting a lot of complaints about the HTC Desire series and it failing while invoking sql statements. I have received reports from users with log snapshots that contain the following. I/Database( 2348): sqlite returned: error code = 8, msg = statement aborts at 1: [pragma journal_mode = WAL;] E/Database( 2348): sqlite3_exec to set journal_mode of /data/data/my.app.package/files/localized_db_en_uk-1.sqlite to WAL failed followed by my app basically burning in flames because the call to open the database results in a serious runtime error that manifests itself as the cursor being left open. There shouldn't be a cursor at this point as we are trying to open it. This only occurs with the HTC Desire HD and Z. My code basically does the following (changed a little to isolate the problem area). • Best scaling methodologies for a highly traffic web application?

  We have a new project for a web app that will display banners ads on websites (as a network) and our estimate is for it to handle 20 to 40 billion impressions a month. Our current language is in ASP...but are moving to PHP. Does PHP 5 has its limit with scaling web application? Or, should I have our team invest in picking up JSP? Or, is it a matter of the app server and/or DB? We plan to use Oracle 10g as the database.

• Pros and cons of sorting data in DB?

  Let's assume I have a table with field of type VARCHAR. And I need to get data from that table sorted alphabetically by that field. What is the best way (for performance): add sort by field to the SQL-query or sort the data when it's already fetched? I'm using Java (with Hibernate), but I can't tell anything about DB engine. It could be any popular relational database (like MySQL or MS Sql Server or Oracle or HSQL DB or any other). The amount of records in table can vary greatly but let's assume there are 5k records.

• PL DOC source forge - 2 issues

  I'm attempting to use PLDOC source forge (http://pldoc.sourceforge.net/maven-site/) with my code to generate a neat page with comments of my liking. I'm coming across 2 issues, any help would be appreciated. 1 I've been using tags (/**, */) to make comments and this works perfectly for functions, but does not appear in procedures. My Functions and procedures are independent and not in packages, and trying to add comments before the PROCEDURE declaration just gets deleted when saved. 2 if i try to use the recommended method of getting the data directly from teh database (call pldoc.bat -url jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:ORCL -user SCOTT -password TIGER -sql SYS_OWNER.DBMS_PIPE,SYS_OWNER.DBMS_OUTPUT), it puts all the available functions and procedures under the user SIS_OWNER (SIS_owner is the only link available on the left hand side). I want to change this so that I can view all the methods in the list instead. Problem with procedures stated in 1 still exists with this method. Please let me know if you have overcome this and any pointers would be great. Thanks

• delphi vs c# post returns different strings - utf problem?

  I'm posting two forms - one in c# and one in delphi. But the result string seems to be different: c# returns: ¤@@1@@@@1@@@@1@@xsm˱Â0Ð... delphi returns: #$1E'@@1@@@@1@@@@1@@x'#$009C... and sice both are compressed streams I'm getting errors while trying to decompress it... The C# is 'correct' - ie. extracts. • Faster way to update 250k rows with SQL

  I need to update about 250k rows on a table and each field to update will have a different value depending on the row itself (not calculated based on the row id or the key but externally). I tried with a parametrized query but it turns out to be slow (I still can try with a table-value parameter, SqlDbType.Structured, in SQL Server 2008, but I'd like to have a general way to do it on several databases including MySql, Oracle and Firebird). Making a huge concat of individual updates is also slow. What about creating a temp table and running an update joining my table and the tmp one? Will it work faster?

  I'm trying to use adodb for db access in my webapp. However my hosting provider has mysql case sensitive, and I have all my fields in lowercase. But when I call getInsertSQL function, I got them in uppercase. Is there a way to force adodb to use lowercase? • Which faces technology for use with GlassFish 2.1 and NetBeans 6.7?

  I'm running GlassFish 2.1 and using NetBeans 6.7. I'd like to create a web interface to my data using JSF 1.2. Trouble is, I'm not sure which 'faces' technology to learn (that includes some good documentation). JBoss/RichFaces seem pretty good on documentation, but I'm using GlassFish. Any thoughts? • Low overhead Java Web Services container?

  I want to provide a Java-based Web Service, but I don't require the features of a full-blown J2EE Application Server. I would like it to start as quickly as possible, though that's not a hard requirement. The Web Service will handle multiple connections and require access to an Oracle database so it will at least require a thread pool and database connection pool. I may want to put a JSP interface onto it later to provide an internal maintainence interface. I have looked at Jetty with an Apache CXF stack, but it looks like I'll have to do a fair amount configuration before even coding the web service - Will it be worth it? Will it even work? Should I forget about the complexity and simply go with JBoss/Weblogic/etc and put up with the bloat and extra start-up time?

• Seeking tutorial: introduction to ODBC with Delphi

  I have a lot of embedded C/C++/Ada experience and an outdated smattering of Delphi plus some database stuff. Now I have to implement an app in Delphi which can manipulate MySql, Oracle, maybe MS Access. In short, I need ODBC. I need to programmatically created a database, define its structure and populate its contents, then later query its existence and programmatically search. I would prefer not to use 3rd party components, unless there is a compelling reason to do so (performance ought not to be an issue for the app, it won't have much data or be run often, at least not in v1.0) . Can anyone point me at a tutorial which can get me up to speed? Thanks

  The (entire) documentation for the position property on a stream says: When overridden in a derived class, gets or sets the position within the current stream. The Position property does not keep track of the number of bytes from the stream that have been consumed, skipped, or both. That's it. OK, so we're fairly clear on what it doesn't tell us, but I'd really like to know what it in fact does stand for. What is 'the position' for? Why would we want to alter or read it? If we change it - what happens? In a pratical example, I have a a stream that periodically gets written to, and I have a thread that attempts to read from it (ideally ASAP). From reading many SO issues, I reset the position field to zero to start my reading. Once this is done: Does this affect where the writer to this stream is going to attempt to put the data? Do I need to keep track of the last write position myself? (ie if I set the position to zero to read, does the writer begin to overwrite everything from the first byte?) If so, do I need a semaphore/lock around this 'position' field (subclassing, perhaps?) due to my two threads accessing it? If I don't handle this property, does the writer just overflow the buffer? Perhaps I don't understand the Stream itself - I'm regarding it as a FIFO pipe: shove data in at one end, and suck it out at the other. If it's not like this, then do I have to keep copying the data past my last read (ie from position 0x84 on) back to the start of my buffer? I've seriously tried to research all of this for quite some time - but I'm new to .NET. Perhaps the Streams have a long, proud (undocumented) history that everyone else implicitly understands. But for a newcomer, it's like reading the manual to your car, and finding out: The accelerator pedal affects the volume of fuel and air sent to the fuel injectors. It does not affect the volume of the entertainment system, or the air pressure in any of the tires, if fitted. Technically true, but seriously, what we want to know is that if we mash it to the floor you go faster..

• Passing extended parameter into Sql 2008 connection string

  Hi, I have a need to support extensive auditing capabilities for a system backing into Sql Server 2008. Since I plan to use LINQ (with no Stored Procs), the database would be a clean, zero contact data repository. However, I need to pratically record a snapshot of every change that happens in the db. So, I thought I should use triggers. But then, I need a user id for the particular user (not the connection string user id) to flow through into the database. In oracle, I should have been able to set up a PROXY USER and the trigger would be able to pick that up. Last I checked, there was no proxy user concept in Sql Server. Does anyone know if there's any extender property I can use to flow through my authenticated user name? ps: I don't mind the impact on connection pooling (if any). Thanks. P

• Is it me or is developing web based data entry GUIs a big pain?

  Maybe it's me or maybe it isn't. I don't have a huge amount of experience of developing web based data entry software but do have some. I used to do it quite a bit years ago. Used to use Oracle Forms, Visual Studio, various 4th generation languages, and performing the user interface layout used to be a snap. Now doing the user interface for developing web applications seems to be a huge pain in the rear. Just trying to get text entry fields and widgets to go where they are supposed to go on the screen is a total pain. You have to know Javascript, CSS, JQuery, HTML, etc. There must be an easier way to develop data entry forms that produce the needed underlying code for a web page. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place. There must be some WYSIWYG GUI development tools for the web for developing data entry forms out there. Anybody know of any?

• Which programming language is easiest to get a junior position in?

  I do not have a CS degree but I have lots of intermediate experience with many languages (PHP, C#, Objective-C, Java, VBScript, Actionscript, Javascript, Ruby, etc), mostly freelance or pastime. I have a little experience with Linux (Ubuntu), and a decent bit with Windows. When I look at different languages I find that am interested in most (except maybe VB), but I am not sure what to focus on. So what would be the easiest language to get a job in? Java? PHP? Or would it be easier to get a job as a Junior DBA if I learned Oracle or SQL Server in my spare time?

• What is a good way to quantify C++ knowledge and skill?

  I have only recently started to study (with the hopes of mastering) C++, one because i have started to love it and two because it's a good career/profession move. At the same time i wish to quantify my knowledge and skill so as to set my self apart from those who just throw C/C++ on their resumes and fish. Is there an open, industry and community recognized way of quantifying ones knowledge and skill in C++? I have looked at Brainbench, MS C++ certificates, and other online certification sites which offer to rate you at $50-$200 per test however there doesn't seem to be a standard on how to rate knowledge and skill. It's one thing for MS or Oracle/Sun to have certifications for their products but C++ is a standard, shouldn't there be a standard way or rating one's knowledge and skill there in? Thanks.

  I want to do a simple PL/SQL program on the Oracle 10g internet environment. The program is: DECLARE stud_rec students%ROWTYPE; last_name VARCHAR2:='Clinton'; BEGIN SELECT * INTO stud_rec FROM students WHERE student_id=100; END; I have a table called students with data inside of it. The issue is that when I want to run this in the SQL command window I got this message: ORA-06550: line 3, column 11: PLS-00215: String length constraints must be in range (1 .. 32767) I have checked the syntax and I cannot find the error. • Strange Java Socket Behavior (Connects, but Doesn't Send)

  I have a fairly complex project that boils down to a simple Client / Server communicating through object streams. Everything works flawlessly for two consecutive connections (I connect once, work, disconnect, then connect again, work, and disconnect). The client connects, does its business, and then closes. The server successfully closes both the object output stream and the socket, with no IO errors. When I try to connect a third time, the connection appears to go through (the ServerSocket.accept() method goes through and an ObjectOutputStream is successfully created). No data is passed, however. The inputStream.readUnshared() method simply blocks. I have taken the following memory precautions: When it comes time to close the sockets, all running threads are stopped, and all objects are nulled out. After every writeUnshared() method call, the ObjectOutputBuffer is flushed and reset. Has anyone encountered a similar problem, or does anyone have any suggestions? I'm afraid my project is rather large, and so copying code is problematic.   I had created a new table named USERLOG with two fields from a previous VIEW. The table already consist of about 9000 records. The two fields taken from the VIEW, i.e. weblog_views consist of IP (consists of IP address), and WEB_LINK (consists of URL). This is the code I used, CREATE TABLE USERLOG AS SELECT C_IP, WEB_LINK FROM weblog_views; I want to add another column to this table called the USER_ID, which would consists of a sequence starting with 1 to 9000 records to create a unique id for each existing rows. I need help with this part. I'm using Oracle SQL Developer: ODMiner version 3.0.04. I tried using the AUTO-INCREMENT option, ALTER TABLE USERLOG ADD USER_ID INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT; But I get an error with this, Error report: SQL Error: ORA-01735: invalid ALTER TABLE option 01735. 00000 - "invalid ALTER TABLE option" So, I would really appreciate any help that I can get!

• Trying to modify a constraint in PostgresSQL

  Postgres is getting quite annoying lately. I have checked the documentation provided by Oracle and found a way to do this without dropping the table. Problem is, it errors out at modify as it does not recognize the keyword. Using EMS SQL Manager for PostgreSQL.
