• Blog Rebranding

  I have been spending more and more time on learning as much as I can on Agile Development and also have been fairly immersed in rolling out TFS 2010 in our environment.  I feel like it is time to talk about some of my experiences.  With that, I am rebranding my blog to focus on these topics.  I am going to start with a bunch of blogs on the process I have gone through getting TFS 2010 configured for our development teams. Last week, Brian Harry was in our office and gave a great talk on the improved tools in TFS 2010 and how Microsoft uses the tools internally.  I followed that up with a high-level overview of the improved out of the box process templates and the process to customize them.  I am definitely very excited about the new features in 2010 and hopefully will keep up my motivation to blog about it.  I am writing my first post right now about the process I went through to build a task progress report based on the user story progress report in the MSF for Agile Development template.  Stay tunedDid you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Using Git with TFS projects

  If you having been following the updates to CodePlex over the last several months you will have noticed that we added support for Git source control. It is important to the CodePlex team to enable developers to use the source control system that supports their development style whether it is distributed version control or centralized version control. There are many projects on CodePlex that are using TFS centralized version control. But we continue to see more and more developers interested in using Git. Last week Brian Harry announced a new open source project called Git-TF. Git-TF is a client side bridge that enabled developer to use Git locally and push to a remote backed by Team Foundation version control. Git-TF also works great for TFS based projects on CodePlex. You may already be familiar with git-tfs. Git-TFS is a similar client side bridge between Git and TFS. Git-TFS works great if you are on Windows since it depends on the TFS .Net client object model. Git-TF adds the ability to use a Git to TFS bridge on multiple platforms since it is written in Java. You can use it on Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows, etc. Since you are connecting to a TFS Server when using Git-TF make sure you use your CodePlex TFS account name: snd\YOUR_USERNAME_cp along with your password.   Like many professionals, I get a lot of my news from Google e-mail alerts that I’ve set up to keep track of key industry trends and competitive news.  In the past few weeks, I’ve been getting a number of news alerts about SAP.  Below are a few recent examples: Warm weather cuts short US maple sugaring season – by Toby Talbot, AP MILWAUKEE – Temperatures in Wisconsin had already hit the high 60s when Gretchen Grape and her family began tapping their 850 maple trees. They had waited for the state's ceremonial tapping to kick off the maple sugaring season. It was moved up five days, but that didn't make much difference. For Grape, the typically month-long season ended nine days later. The SAP had stopped flowing in a record-setting heat wave, and the 5-quart collection bags that in a good year fill in a day were still half-empty. Instead of their usual 300 gallons of syrup, her family had about 40. Maple syrup producers across the North have had their season cut short by unusually warm weather. While those with expensive, modern vacuum systems say they've been able to suck a decent amount of sap from their trees, producers like Grape, who still rely on traditional taps and buckets, have seen their year ruined. "It's frustrating," said the 69-year-old retiree from Holcombe, Wis. "You put in the same amount of work, equipment, investment, and then all of a sudden, boom, you have no SAP." Home & Garden: Too-Early Spring Means Sugaring Woes  - by Georgeanne Davis for The Free Press Over this past weekend, forsythia and daffodils were blooming in the southern parts of the state as temperatures climbed to 85 degrees, and trees began budding out, putting an end to this year's maple syrup production even as the state celebrated Maine Maple Sunday. Maple sugaring needs cold nights and warm days to induce SAP flows. Once the trees begin budding, SAP can still flow, but the SAP is bitter and has an off taste. Many farmers and dairymen count on sugaring for extra income, so the abbreviated season is a real financial loss for them, akin to the shortened shrimping season's effect on Maine lobstermen. SAP season comes to a sugary Sunday finale – Kennebec Journal, March 26th, 2012 Rebecca Manthey stood out in the rain at the entrance of Old Fort Western keeping watch over a cast iron kettle of boiling SAP hooked to a tripod over a wood fire.  Manthey and the rest of the Old Fort Western staff -- decked out in 18th-century attire -- joined sugar houses across the state in observance of Maine Maple Sunday. The annual event is sponsored by the Department of Agriculture and the Maine Maple Producers Association.  She said the rain hadn't kept people from coming to enjoy all the events at the fort surrounding the production of Maple syrup.  "In the 18th century, you would be boiling SAP in the woods, so I would be in the woods," Manthey explained to the families who circled around her. "People spent weeks and weeks in the woods. You don't want to cook it to fast or it would burn. When it looks like the right consistency then you send it (into the kitchen) to be made into sugar." Manthey said she enjoyed portraying an 18th-century woman, even in the rain, which didn't seem to bother visitors either. • Git with SSH on Windows

  Hello all, I've went through the excellent guide provided by Tim Davis (http://www.timdavis.com.au/git/setting-up-a-msysgit-server-with-copssh-on-windows/) which is about configuring Git to work with SSH under Windows in order to produce a Git Server in order to have a main place for my DVCS. I am in the process of creating a clone for my project. I’ve went through all the steps till this point, but I keep getting this from TortoiseGit: git.exe clone -v “ssh://[email protected]:22/SSH/Home/administrator/myapp.git” “E:\GitTest\myapp” bash: [email protected]: command not found Initialized empty Git repository in E:/GitTest/myapp/.git/ fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly Success and nothing gets cloned. BTW: The TortoisePLink comes up just before this message appears and asks me: “login as:” ( I thought that this info is given in the command, i.e: Administrator@blahblah. My home variable is set to the correct place: From a Git Bash shell: echo $HOME /c/SSH/home/Administrator I’ve also tried using Putty’s plink instead of TortoisePLink (in both Git’s and TortoiseGit’s installation). This time the error was narrowed down to: git.exe clone -v “ssh://[email protected]:22/c:/SSH/Home/administrator/myapp.git” “E:\GitTest\myapp” Initialized empty Git repository in E:/GitTest/myapp/.git/ fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly Any help is more than welcome! • VS2010 error: Unable to start debugging on the web server

  I get error message "Unable to start debugging on the web server" in Visual Studio 2010. I clicked the Help button and followed the related suggestions without success. This happens with a newly created local ASP.Net project when modified to use IIS instead of Cassini (which works for debugging). It prompts to set debug="true" in the web.config and then immediately pops up the error. Nothing shows up in the Event Viewer. I am able to attach to w3wp to debug. It works but is not as convenient as F5. I also have a similar problem with VS2008 on the same PC. Debugging used to work for both. I have re-registered Framework 4 (aspnet_regiis -i). I ran the VS2010 repair (this is the RTM version). I am running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 box. I do have Resharper V5 installed. There must be some configuration setting or registry value that survives the repair causing the problem. I'd appreciate any ideas. Thanks, Gary Davis ([email protected])

  I have a list of phone extensions that I want to print a friendly version of it. I have a print css for it to print appropriately onto paper, the extensions are located within an unordered list, which are floated to the left. <ul> <li>Larry Hughes <span class="ext">8291</span></li> <li>Chuck Davis <span class="ext">3141</span></li> <li>Kevin Skillis <span class="ext">5115</span></li> </ul> I float it left, and when it prints the second page, it leaves off the name part of the list (in Firefox, works fine in Google Chrome and IE), see here: http://cl.ly/de965aea63f66c13ba32 I am referring to this: http://www.alistapart.com/articles/goingtoprint/ - they mentioned something about applying a float:none; to the content part of the page. If I do that, how should I go about making the list show up in 4 columns? It is a dynamic list, pulled from a database. Any help is appreciated.

• WCF - problem with local service (The server has rejected the client credentials.)

  Hi, I have a simple setup, a WPF application running on the machine and a WCF service hosted within a Windows Service on the same machine (always on the same machine). When i debug on one computer i can easily access the local WCF Service. When i run it on another machine i get an error: "The server has rejected the client credentials." Some of my observations are, that at my local machine i have no domain/network. Its my home machine. When at a customers site, it will not run, and gives the above error. Anyone got any ideas on why this is different on these computers? /Brian

• How to avoid OLEDB converting "."s into "#"s in column names?

  I'm using the ACE OLEDB driver to read from an Excel 2007 spreadsheet, and I'm finding that any '.' character in column names get converted to a '#' character. For example, if I have the following in a spreadsheet: Name Amt. Due Due Date Andrew 12.50 4/1/2010 Brian 20.00 4/12/2010 Charlie 1000.00 6/30/2010 the name of the second column would be reported as "Amt# Due" when read with the following code: OleDbConnection connection = new OleDbConnection( "Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0; Data Source={0}; " + "Extended Properties=\"Excel 12.0 Xml;HDR=YES;FMT=Delimited;IMEX=1\""); OldDbCommand command = new OleDbCommand("SELECT * FROM MyTable", connection); OleDbReader dataReader = command.ExecuteReader(); System.Console.WriteLine(dataReader.GetName(1)); I've read through all the documentation I can find and I haven't found anything which even mentions that this will happen. Has anyone run into this before? Is there a way to fix this behavior?

• Linq to SQl over WCF Timesout after several calls

  I have a L2S Repository class which instantiates the L2S DataContext in its constructor. The repository is instantiated at run time (using Unity) in a service hosted in IIS with WCF. When I run up the client MVC applicaton the calls to the backend WCF service work for a while and then timeout. I suspected perhaps a database issue as I was depending on IIS garbage collection to dispose of unused DataContext instances in the IIS host but when I checked the characteristics of the problem I notice the following: The client makes the call to WCF but the WCF service does not respond. Next, the client times out Some time later (several minutes) the service actually executes the request by instantiating the repository and servicing the call. I have checked both client and server traces logs and only the client shows WCF errors (the timeout error). Where should I look? Is it something in WCF or is L2S possibly blocking with unfreed conenctions, resources etc.? Many thanks Brian

  I am just getting started with NHaml and ran into a snag. This is my application.haml file: %html %head %title = Get Some Data %link{ href="/media/css/styles.css", rel="Stylesheet", type="text/css" } %body %div.page %h1 = Get Some Data _ When I try to view in a browser it throw the following error: NHaml.Exceptions.SyntaxException: The attribute ',' is occurs twice. If I remove the line beginning with %link it works fine. What am I doing wrong?   I have three types of facts: album(code, artist, title, date). songs(code, songlist). musicians(code, list). Example: album(123, 'Rolling Stones', 'Beggars Banquet', 1968). songs(123, ['Sympathy for the Devil', 'Street Fighting Man']). musicians(123, [[vocals, 'Mick Jagger'], [guitar, 'Keith Richards', 'Brian Jones']]. I need to create these 4 rules: together(X,Y) This succeeds if X and Y have played on the same album. artistchain(X,Y) This succeeds if a chain of albums exists from X to Y; two musicians are linked in the chain by 'together'. role(X,Y) This succeeds if X had role Y (e.g. guitar) ever. song(X,Y) This succeeds if artist X recorded song Y. Any help?

• Error getting SVN repo of Liferay in Eclipse

  Hello, Im using Eclipse Galileo and have installed Subclipse. I looked at the svn repo url at http://www.liferay.com/web/brian.chan/blog/-/blogs/changes-to-anonymous-access-to-liferay-s-svn and then tried to get Liferay from their SVN repository in Eclipse, using svn://svn.liferay.com/repos/public --username guest,but i get the following error message: Error validating location: "org.tigris.subversion.javahl.ClientException:No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. svn: Cant connect to host 'svn.liferay.com':No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it Any way to fix this ?   Anyone have good book / article recommendation for procedural generation of background music? (No vocals, just instruments). I'm not interested in: How do I generate the sound of a particular note on a particular instrument I'm interested in: How do I generate the melody / score for the music. Thanks! EDIT: Thanks for the reference to Brian Eno. I'm definitely looking into the ambient/user can ignore type of music. I.e. think the background music of a game. It's there to provide some basic mood, but the focus is the game.

  I saw a post on Oslo about making us obsolete. I just happened to listen to the latest Deep Fried Episode with Brian Noyes. They were talking about SharePoint and Windows Workflow and how the "dream" of Windows Workflow is to let mere Business Analyst Drag and Drop their way to a functioning service. I am a newbie dotnet developer, and afraid that by the time I get to Consulting "Level" my skills would be obsolete. Should I abandon learning basic skills and just learn how to work with Frameworks and Packaged applications such as SAP, SharePoint, BizTalk. Am I wasting time trying to learn Expression Trees and Func of T's?

• Evaluation of jQuery function variable value during definition of that function

  I have a large number of rows in a table within which I wish to attach a unique colorpicker (jQuery plugin) to each cell in a particular column identified by unique ids. Given this, I want to automate the generation of instances of the colorpicker as follows: var myrows={"a","b","c",.....} var mycolours={"ffffff","fcdfcd","123123"...} for (var i=0;i<myrows.length;i++) { $("#"+myrows[i]+"colour").ColorPicker({flat: false, color: mycolours[i], onChange: function (hsb, hex, rgb) { $("#"+myrows[i]+"currentcolour").css('backgroundColor', '#' + hex); } }); Now this doesn't work because the evaluation of the $("#"+myrows[i]+"currentcolour") component occurs at the time the function is called, not when it is defined (which is want I need). Given that this plugin javascript appends its code to the level and not to the underlying DOM component that I am accessing above so can't derive what id this pertains to, how can I evaluate the variable during function declaration/definition? • MVC on Server 2008 R2 - How?

  I have a new WIndows Server 2008 R2 x64 DataCentre with Framework 3.5 SP1 and Framework 4 installed. When I install my MVC application (VS 2008 MVC 2.0 using a Web Setup project installer) and browse to the application I get an error that System.Web.Mvc cannot be found. If I copy the relevant DLLs (System.Web.Mvc etc)into the bin directory the app runs up perfectly. I have checked everywhere for an installer but can only find the VS2008 related bits, no server runtime. How do I get ASP.Net MVC installed in this environment so that we don't have to Copy Local the dlls? Many thanks Brian
