• Make a lives display in HUD, Flash AS3 (not text!)

  I've been searching the internet all day and I can't find the answer I'm looking for. In my HUD I want to use orange dots to represent lives. The user starts off with 5 lives and every time they die, I want a dot to be removed. Pretty straight forward. So far my idea is to make a movie clip that has the five dots in a line. There would be 5 frames on the timeline (because after the last life it goes to a game over screen right away). I would have a variable set up to store the number of lives and a function to keep track of lives. So every hit of an obstacle would result in livesCounter--;.   I created a wireless network inside a D-Link DIR-301 connected to a Mac, What I want is that every device to connect to this network if the browser automatically opens instead of the default homepage, it redirects to my website already set in the localhost of the machine which also has the router attached. I'd also like to see that instead of the IP to connect to the site, there will be a "fake" link. What do you advise me? how can I proceed? I state that I am a bit novice in this field, being more a web programmer.

  I am trying to create a demo for a class of mine and I want to configure "fake" domain names on my laptop. A previous question "Can I specify a port in an entry in my /etc/hosts on OS X?" contained an answer indicating that to do it you must use /etc/hosts plus changes to the iptables "If OS X uses iptables you could point xyz.com to some ip in the hosts file like 157.166.226.25 and then: sudo iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -d 157.166.226.25 -j DNAT --to-destination 127.0.0.1:3000 " Since OS X doesn't use iptables, how do I do the equivalent using the tools available on OS X? (the original "asker" seemed to know how to do this, so it wasn't explained). Thanks in advance.

• Ubuntu cannot see Windows 7 partitions on install

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 as a dual boot with Windows 7 on my Dell latitude e6510. It is currently running Windows 7 and I have used the MS disk tools to shrink the Win 7 NTFS partition to make room for Linux. The issue I'm having is that when I run Ubuntus installer by booting from CD it sees the entire hard drive as unallocated space. I have also tried Kbuntu 10.10, Fedora 14, booting a Gparted 0.8.0 usb drive, and Ubuntu "install in Windows" with wubi they all have problems. EDIT: When I run the "try Ubuntu" option on booting from cd it can mount my Windows partition and I can view the files. The output of sudo parted -l when running in try Ubuntu mode: Warning: /dev/sda contains GPT signatures, indicating that it has a GPT table. However, it does not have a valid fake msdos partition table, as it should. Perhaps it was corrupted -- possibly by a program that doesn't understand GPT partition tables. Or perhaps you deleted the GPT table, and are now using an msdos partition table. Is this a GPT partition table? • Equalizer for Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptop (Windows 7) (has Realtek sound)

  Hi, I've been trying to find a way to have a real equalizer for my Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptop. I don't know much about computers but the guys in the store seem to know less than I do! From what I've been able to glean through friends, Windows 7 no longer supports a real equalizer function with Realtek, and the result is a fake "equalizer" that does nothing. I have hearing issues so not being able properly adjust the higher frequencies is causing me physical pain and ringing in my ears. I've tried to decipher the threads I find online but am quite confused by them. Basically I need an equalizer that will work with Windows 7 (with everything, internet, skype, music, etc). The current drivers offered by Realtek do nothing except make the sound inaudible. The one that may possibly work and provide an actual equalizer is a few versions back and can't be found anywhere. Thanks! And sorry if this is a duplicate question but I am confused a bit by the threads online.

• How do I transform a LAN subnet to another? (VPN)

  I've set up a VPN with a LAN behind it. VPN : 10.2.1.X LAN : 192.168.1.X When I connect from outside where the router via DHCP assigns me a similar IP to my "original LAN" (192.168.1.X) everything starts to be messed up. I can't route my traffic through the VPN and (obviosly) I can't reach my "real" LAN behind my VPN. How can I always reach my LAN? I thought that I can fake my LAN subnet to something like "10.2.2.X" to those PCs out of my VPN but in this way my VPN server should translate 10.2.2.X to 192.168.1.X (locally).[Is this S/D-NAT?] Is this possible? How can I accomplish that? Thank you very much!

• Installing Ubuntu on HP Envy 4 - 1104tx (preinstalled Windows 8)

  I have been using Linux for more than 2 years now. I had hp pavilion dv4 laptop and Ubuntu 12.04 was working great. I recently purchased HP Envy 4 - 1104tx which has Windows 8 preinstalled. I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 but since it is not much compatible with UFEI, I downloaded 64 bit iso of ubuntu 12.10. Made a liveUSB using UnetBootin 583. I followed Installing Ubuntu on a Pre-Installed UEFI Supported Windows 8 system but still I am not able to boot with LiveUSB. I disabled secure boot. There is no option for fast boot or anything as such. It still wouldn't work. I also tried booting through Legacy, but I'm unable to install via LiveUSB. Is there any other way? I don't have SSD so no problem of fake raid. Is there some way by which I can install Ubuntu (12.04 preferred)? I don't care about Windows 8. Is there any way via which I can install Ubutnu over Windows 8? (I don't have a CD/DVD ROM).

• jquery selector for elements beside one another? [migrated]

  this SHOULD be simple, but I have been through the Jquery Selector help for about an hour now and nothing seems to be working. Help! I am basically trying to pull the text (an address) of a SPAN after a user clicks on the link next to it. Please note though, I will have about 10 on a page, so I cannot set a static address. It must be pulled when the user clicks. The html code: <a href="3" class="clicky">Click to Show Map</a> <span style="display: none" class="theaddy">123 Fake Street, Somewhere Else, 12341</span> So really, my question is, how do I grab the text from .theaddy when a user clicks on .clicky? As I said, I cannot use var propertyaddy = $(.theaddy).text(); because there are 10 of these addy's on the same page. I need some sort of "THIS" Next To kinda thing. I also tossed around the idea of placing the SPAN inside the A, but my efforts on that weren't working either. Thank you in advance for any help!

• How do I properly add existing source code files to my Xcode project?

  I'm new to iPhone development and I'm still getting familiar with the Mac dev environment, including Xcode. I want to add some 3rd party code to my iPhone project, but when I add the "existing files" to my Xcode project, I'm presented with a dialog box that has far too many options that I don't understand and, as such, my project isn't working. When I #import headerfilename.h, I get a build error that reads headerfilename.h: No such file or directory. Can anyone explain to me what all these options mean or give me a link to some documentation that can? I'm having a hard time finding anything in Apple's docs. Which options do I want to choose to add existing source code files to my Xcode project? I should note that the source code files that I'm trying to add are located in my project/Classes/frameworkname/ directory. After they're added, do I need to reference this new code directory in my project settings anywhere (i.e. some kind of header file directory variable)? Thanks so much! Update: I found the following answers/responses on the apple dev forums that were very useful and helped me fix my issue... To make it simple : - if you do not check the copy option, the file stay where it is. - if you check it, it is copied in your project folders In the first case (what it seems you are doing) you need to tell the compiler that the header files are in another directory : - project info - build - search paths - User Header Search Path : add the directory from where you took the header file Hope this will help You have discovered the most confusing dialog box that ever came out of Cupertino. Six years of Xcode, and this thing still is partly a mystery to me. To even get that far, I had to make many test projects to try and reverse-engineer what this thing does. The "Copy" box means that it will copy the files as they are right now, into the project. If this box is not checked, then it just references those files during a build and copies them as they are at THAT time. For source code, you want the Copy box checked. The "relative to" is a total mystery to me and I can't help you with that. I usually leave it however it is already set. Does it mean relative to where they are on disk, or the arrangement in Xcode, or in the bundle? Who knows. The last 2 radio buttons SEEM to mean that it will either re-create the folder structure of the folder you are adding, or just put "fake" folders in Xcode that point to the real folders. This is probably your problem - you are adding source code that is not all at the top level, and when it goes to find it, it does not re-create the hierarchy. Others can supply a better way, hopefully, but what I would do is put all of the source in one folder and add that, using the Copy box. Then in Xcode you can make whatever bogus folders you want and put the source file names in those fake folders.

• Rendering a Long Document on iPad

  I'm implementing a document viewer with highlighting/annotation capabilities for a custom document format on iPad. The documents are kind of long (100 to 200 pages, if printed on paper) and I've had a hard time finding the right approach. Here are the requirments: 1) Basic rich-text styling: control of left/right margins. Control of font name, size, foreground/background color, and line spacing. Bold, italics, underline, etc. 2) Selection and highlighting of arbitrary text regions (not limited to paragraph boundaries, like in Safari/UIWebView). 3) Customization of the Cut/Copy/Paste popup (what is that thing called anyhow? UIActionBar?) This is one of the essential requirements of the app. My first implementation was based on UIWebView. I just rendered the document as HTML with CSS for text styling. But I couldn't get the kind of text selection behavior I wanted (across paragraph boundaries) and the UIActionBar can't be customized from within UIWebView. So I started working on a javascript approach, faking the device text-selection behavior using JQuery to trap touch events and dynamically modifying the DOM to change the background color of selected regions of text. I built a fake UIActionBar control as a hidden DIV, positioning it and unhiding it whenever there was an active selection region. Not too shabby. The main problem is that it's SLOOOOOOOW. Scrolling through the document is nice and quick, but dynamically changing the DOM is not very snappy. Plus, I couldn't figure out how to recreate the magnifier loupe, so my fake text-selection GUI doesn't look quite the same as the native implementation. Also, I haven't yet implemented the communication bridge between the javascript layer and the objective-c layer (where the rest of the app lives), but it was shaping up to be a huge hassle. So I've been looking at CoreText, but there are precious few examples on the web. I spent a little time with this simple little demo: http://github.com/jonasschnelli/I7CoreTextExample/ It shows how to use CoreText to draw an NSAttributedText string into a UIView. But it has its own problems: It doesn't implement text-selection behavior, and it doesn't present a UIActionBar, so I don't have any idea how to make that happen. And, more importantly, it tries to draw the entire document all at once, with significant performance degradations for long documents. My documents can have thousands of paragraphs, and less than 1% of the document is ever on screen at a time. On the plus side, these documents already contain precise formatting information. I know the exact page-position of every line of text, so I don't need a layout engine. Does anyone know how to implement this sort of view using CoreText? I understand that a full-fledged implementation is overkill for a question like this, but I'm looking for a good CoreText example with a few basic requirements: 1) Precise layout & formatting control (using the formatting metrics and text styles I've already calculated). 2) Arbitrary selection of text. 3) Customization of the UIActionBar. 4) Efficient recycling of resources for off-screen objects. I'd be happy to implement my own recycling when text elements scroll off-screen, but wouldn't that require re-implementing UIScrollView? I'm brand-new to iPhone development, and still getting used to Objective-C, but I've been working in other languages (Java, C#, flex/actionscript, etc) for more than ten years, so I feel confident in my ability to get the work done, if only I had a better feel for the iPhone SDK and the common coding patterns for stuff like this. Is it just me, or does the SDK documentation really suck? Anyhow, thanks for your help!

• MPMoviePlayerController - streaming works on 3GS, not on anything pre-3GS

  I am having some serious issues and annoyances with MPMoviePlayerController. In my app you can watch trailers for some movies in .mov format. I have tested with a friend and had users report that it does not work on their device, which are all 3G. I have tested on my own, a 3GS and playback works fine. I have tried on a 1st gen iPhone and it doesn't work. So I am lead to believe it's a memory issue, and that it's simply stopping the playback and returning to the previous screen. Below is the code I use to launch the player, which is straight out of the MoviePlayer example from Apple. MPMoviePlayerController *mp = [[MPMoviePlayerController alloc] initWithContentURL:[NSURL URLWithString:trailerURL]]; if (mp) { self.moviePlayer = mp; [mp release]; [self.moviePlayer play]; } I have tried to check the NSError from the notifications, but the only thing I get is "An unknown playback error occurred" for both the localizedDescription and localizedRecoverySuggestion, making it impossible to figure out exactly why it's not working. I have seen many examples of people who just have issues with the movie player, but it's starting to annoy me that it sometimes seem to work fine and other times it just doesn't (again, appearing like a memory issue).   Is there an easy way to add chapters to existing movie files? Note: Actually, I’m not 100% sure if they’re called “chapters” in video files, but it’s the same concept as DVDs. I assume this differs with the video encoding, but any help at all is progress! I have video files in various formats (although .mov, .mp4, and .m4v are my most common). I’m on Mac OS X, but I posted here (instead of the Apple Q&A) because I figured any answers may be useful to other non-Apple power users. Apple-native, application-based solutions preferred (usability is top of my list). However, command-line programs and utilities that do the job are just as welcome. Please share any indirect-but-related wisdom you may have on this topic. Thanks!

I have tried Premier, Vegas, Pinnacle, etc, but it is almost impossible to edit and do a movie. I do have a good computer with Windows7 but that doesn't help me, and I don't want to buy a new monster pc just for that task. Question: I could convert the files, but what would be the best format? • Remote control a computer using another computer

  I've got a main desktop computer at home, I'd like watch movies using it but able to control it afar. For example, I would like to lay on my bed and control the desktop using my own laptop via wireless. I've been looking for solutions to my question. I tried to use remote desktop, I can pause the movie but I then have to go to the pc to log in the OS again. I also tried to bind my desktop to my mobile phone over bluetooth, this works as I can control the mouse etc. but I found I can barely see the mouse pointer when at long distance. I still wish I can use my laptop as a remote control, is this possible?

• Proper application shutdown before windows xp auto shutdown

  I frequently leave the computer on playing a movie or downloading a file while I go to bed. I do use the 'shutdown computer when finished' feature of KMPlayer or getright or uTorrent or whatever program I am using. This method effectively shuts down the computer, but the problem is that there are some applications that seem to exit forcefully when doing this kind of shutdown, this being clearly reflected in winamp not saving the current playlist and config, messenger not saving the chat logs, etc. My goal here would be to have automatically close properly all applications when the auto/scheduled program triggers it. I am looking for some Windows shutdown mode/setting that does application closing like the user would do. I am not expecting to auto-click on save dialogs prompts, if this is needed I will do it before leaving the computer on for auto shutdown.

• MacBook Pro 15in High-res hard to read. What setting should I change?

  I just bought a new MacBook Pro with the high-res screen (1680x1050), but I noticed that all text is so small that to read it my face has to be like 18 inches away. When I adjusted the resolution to be the next sizes down (1440 x 852, and 1440 x 852 stretched), as well as all the other smaller sizes it made everything look blurry (similarly to when you use Command + Scroll to zoom in, how the text is really soft on the edges, and difficult to read). Is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing, or another resolution settings area that I can use. I feel like this 2800 dollar notebook may be only good for movie watching otherwise. • Realtek audio AC 97 5.1 on Windows 7: Terrible subwoofer quality

  I have a media center PC with on-board Realtek AC97 Audio. I have been using Windows XP for a couple of years with great audio quality. I just upgraded this PC with Windows 7 and installed the latest Realtek drivers from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/ At the testing screen, all the speakers works correctly (including subwoofer). Despite that, while playing any movie or music, the subwoofer quality is terrible. From it it just comes noises, in the correct rhythm but quite low and quite out of tone. I compensated the loudness by putting the other speakers lower but the sound of the subwoofer is really terrible. Is there anyone facing the same problem? Does anyone have a workaround for that? PS.: I had gone past the steps given in Terrible noises from subwoofer of ACER Aspire 6930 with Realtek sound chip but still I have a bad quality of sound.   When playing a BluRay movie on a PC (any OS, Mac/Win/Linux), I have some questions about audio output: When playing a BluRay disc on the PC using a BluRay player program, can it decode the multichannel (7.1) LPCM/ Dolby Digital Plus / Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD / DTS-HDMA soundtracks in their HD formats (ie, without downmixing to Dolby Digital or DTS or PCM) and output the audio directly to the soundcard's 7.1 line-level analog outputs? Is it possible to bitstream the the multichannel (7.1) LPCM/ Dolby Digital Plus / Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD / DTS-HDMA soundtracks in their HD formats (ie, without downmixing to Dolby Digital or DTS or PCM) over the HDMI output to a receiver when using a BluRay player program? I'd kinda like to know. I'm contemplating building a home theater PC, and the above functionality is important. I'd prefer that #1 is possible, actually, because it would mean I wouldn't have to buy a receiver.

  Hi guys, I have a really annoying problem: essentially, Adobe Flash is not working anymore. For instance, I cant watch any clip on youtube and I always get a black screen saying: Movie not loaded ... I have the newest Flash version (10.0.45.2), and the problem is the same with IE, Firefox or Chrome. I am using WIN XP and I turned of Antivirus software as well as Firewall, still I cant watch any flash stuff. Anyone an idea what could have happened in the last week?   I'd like to convert a folder of PNGs into a quicktime .mov with PNG compression (it's a folder of fractals in an animation; PNG compression works great here and the losslessness is important). What programs will do this with minimal fuss? (I don't have or want to pay for a full license of QuickTime Pro.) UPDATE: Let me make this more clear: minimal fuss means: I download some EncoderMagic.app (for example), I double click it to launch it. I select the folder with my numbered images, and out pops my movie. No mess. No resizing. ... Perhaps this doesn't exist (or is called QuickTime Pro?)
