    I installed Oracle SOA Suite 11g. I start the NodeManager successfully. I start the AdminServer successfully.   • 4GB of RAM in MacOSX 10.5, only 3GB in MacOSX 10.6

    Hi, I was using MacOSX 10.5 on my MacBook until today and I had 4GB of memory there. Now I have updated to MacOSX 10.6 and it only displays 3GB. Why is that? How can I fix it? Also, I am a bit wondering why most people (well, most of the Google hits explained the 3GB issue that way -- leaving out the fact that it has worked earlier) are saying that a 32bit system can under no circumstances access more than 3.2GB. Don't we have PAE nowadays in most systems? Thanks, Albert

  • Mac OS can't connect to SMB shares after sleep

    I used to access my local Windows 2008 file server's SMB shares on my recent (3 weeks old) MacBook Pro without problems. However, for a few days now, it fails to (re-)connect to the server after it woke up from sleep mode. Finder just shows "connecting..." and hangs indefinitely. The same thing happens when I try it from the command line (mount -t smbfs). This happens via both WiFi and cable, I also tried turning networking off and back on. The only thing that helps is a reboot. Any hints?

  • With Ubuntu Linux (10+), how do I connect to remote to my machine from Windows

    I tried to to remote into my Ubuntu machine. I enabled the setting on Ubuntu and that side seems to work. But I get a connection time out when I use RealVNC on the Windows box. I believe it is a firewall issue. I disabled the firewall for that application on Windows but I don't know how to check if the firewall is enabled on the windows machine. I am on a local network with a router. Ideally, I would want to block that remote control port at the Internet level/router level but "enable" that port on the Windows box and the Ubuntu box. How do I check those settings.

  • Wireless networking on Gnome on Ubuntu 9 / 10

    So here's my problem: I have some netbooks (ASUS eee, and ACER Aspire Ones) that I've been tasked to set up as kiosk machines, locked up tight for normal users. I am a command-line, server man, so this gnome malarkey is all a bit new to me. I found a lovely 9.04 kiosk livecd that installs and runs exactly as I want it to, but I can't get the wireless working. So I dropped on a full 10.4 distro, and wireless works straight out of the box (so hardware is good) - all I needed to do was right-click on the network connection icon, enter my SSID and password (WPA/WPA2) and away it went, perfect. Further investigation on 10.4 distro shows that /etc/networking/interfaces is virtually empty (just auto lo iface lo inet loopback in it), even after I have set up the wireless thru the gnome taskbar applet (is that the right word?). So where does gnome / ubuntu store the network settings to bring the blasted wireless connection up, and what do I need to do on the kiosk version to get wireless running?

  • What’s the password for my FileVault 2 boot volume?

    Apple’s support document for FileVault 2 (a.k.a. “full disk encryption” or “FDE”) has lots of information about enabling FDE and what it means for booting the machine. However, it doesn’t cover one very important thing I’m trying to do: mount the drive in the Recovery HD environment to reinstall OS X on it. The Recovery HD environment asks me for the volume passphrase so it can mount my drive and try to install OS X onto it. If this were an external drive which I’d manually enabled FDE on with diskutil, or an external Time Machine volume, I’d know it because it makes you pick one (just like a regular login password), but FileVault 2 never asked me for a volume passphrase (I assume it selects one behind the scenes). I’ve tried my main user’s password, but that doesn’t work, and neither does the recovery key set for the volume. Keychain Access doesn’t have anything that I could find. How do I unlock this volume?

  • PowerPoint '10 avoid animation completion on click & advance slide or start new one

    Scenario I have PowerPoint 2010 On the "Transitions" tab the "Advance Slide On Mouse Click" check box is checked. I have a long, slow, timed, non-repeating animation working in the background of the slide. I click to advance the slide before the animation is finished, but ... Instead of advancing the slide, the animation moves to the completed state ... Forcing a second click to actually advance the slide. Additionally If I have other animations on the slide that are initiated by a click, the long animation also advances to a finished state before starting the new animation. Desired Behavior On click, I want the slide to advance or the next on-click animation to start whether the long animation is done or not, and without having that long animation first "complete" itself. In the case of another animation, I simply want the long animation to continue, while also doing the new animation. Ultimate Question Is there a way to either: Set an option somewhere to not have that animation complete on click and simply "continue" to animate with the start of a new animation or to advance the slide (as the case may be)? Create a VBA script that will produce the desired behavior for the long animation?

  • Permissions restoring from Time Machine - Finder copy vs "cp" copy

    Note: this question was starting to sprawl so I rewrote it. I have a folder that I'm trying to restore from a Time Machine backup. Using cp -R works fine, but certain folders cannot be restored with either the Time Machine UI or Finder. Other users have reported similar errors and the cp -R workaround was suggested (e.g. Restoring from Time Machine - Permissions Error). But I wanted to understand: Why cp -R works when the Finder and the Time Machine UI do not. Whether I could prevent the errors by changing file permissions before the backup. There do indeed seem to be some permissions that Finder works with and some that it does not. I've narrowed the errors down to folders with the user ben (that's me) and the group wheel. Here's a simplified reproduction. But ben-wheel does not prompt for my password and gives the error: The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access “file”. Interestingly, I can restore the file from this folder by dragging it directly to my local drive (instead of dragging its parent folder), but when I do so its permissions are changed to ben/staff.   • Dashboard Devmode w/o "Always on Top" Possible?

    I am using (and loving) OS X's Dashboard in dev mode ('defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES') which lets you put the widgets on your desktop directly. The only downside is the widgets are "always on top". So all windows end up going under the widgets instead of above. Is there any way to disable this?

  • Symmetrix gatekeepers on Solaris 10

    I have some Solaris machines that are connected to EMC Symmetrix for SAN storage. Apparently the Symm has a gatekeeper device that is used with the symmetrix CLI. We don't need the CLI, but I have these gatekeeper devices that constantly fill /var/adm/messages and the like with corrupt label errors. Is there anything I can do (short of deleting the devices on machine start) to get rid of them? Or should I just try to get our SAN guy to get the installer for the CLI? These things are getting annoying, and the devfsadmd daemon keeps rediscovering them on boot.

  • Mac OS Sound Problem.

    Ok, this is strange problem, and I couldn't find any solution for it yet. This happened today then @work I plugged in external speakers jack, speakers was playing, everything was OK. But after I took jack off, I couldn't hear any sound from mac speakers. It seems like disabled. So now I only can listen music through headphones or external speakers but not mac speakers.   • Exchange Public Folders in Snow Leopard Mail.app

    I am using Mail.app (running snow leopard) to connect to my email account on my school's Exchange 2007 server. I get my Inbox just fine, and iCal connects to my Outlook Calendar just fine, but I cannot seem to get any of the Exchange Public Folders that I can automatically see when I am using Outlook on a Windows box. The Account Type is shown as "Exchange 2007" I did not have any luck Googling this problem, in fact most of the results I saw were dealing with the opposite problem: Remove MS Exchange Public Folders I am aware that my question is a duplicate of this: http://superuser.com/questions/103115/apple-mail-app-all-exchange-folders-not-visible but since that question did not get any responses, I am reposting.

  • LaunchDaemon causing Lion to hang on boot

    I've got a Mac Mini 2011, which I intend to use for a few tasks such as Plex and running a few VM's. I've installed virtualbox, along with XAMPP and phpvirtualbox, which all worked fine. However, getting this to run on startup is proving a real PITA! I'm at the moment trying to get vboxwebsrv running on boot. I've created a launchd plist within /Library/LaunchDaemons to run it and it works fine... well sort of. Lion when booting will show the spinning wheel and stop, never showing a GUI - however if I remote in via screen sharing or SSH, I can login fine and see that vboxwebsrv has launched successfully. Setting this plist to disabled makes lion boot up fine again. Initially I thought it was due to it staying open, so tried to add -b which causes it to run in the background, this just caused launchd to constantly spawn new processes and didn't even fix my problem of Lion being stuck at the spinning wheel. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm losing my mind here!   • I reinstalled OS X and the system was the same as before

    Strange thing happened. I want so sell my old Macbook and therefore used a disk image of the Snow Leopard DVD that I restored onto an external drive. I booted off the drive and went through the installation steps. Now I really would like to perform "archive and install", as there might be some files that I need later, but I didn't see the option. The only options for installation I had, were, including others, optional printer drivers and Rosetta. So I just clicked through and I wasn't given any other option. After about 45 minutes, my system booted again, and voila, there was my old system. Nothing changed. How should I proceed to actually reset the system? All I have is that Snow Leopard DVD image.

    hi, i want to learn python using my mac. now i want to setup a python version = 3.1.3, because my materials for learning are using this version. typing python into terminal results version 2.6.1, using the dmg installer on python.org (http://docs.python.org/ftp/python/3.1.3/) doesn't have an effect on the python version in terminal, but it's bundled with an own shell under Applications/Python 3.1/Idle.app my question now is, should i use this shell for learing or is there a better way, updating the python version bundled with snow leopard? i already tried defaults write com.apple.versioner.python Version 3.1.3 or defaults write com.apple.versioner.python Version 3.0 without any result. thanks!

However, whenever I mount a Truecrypt Volume and double-click that, it looks like this: Is there any way to default to the first view option for all types of folders? I tried view options in Finder, but it didn't seem to work.

    I am trying to install OS X on my PC (Hackintosh), using JAS Mac OS X for Intel. I have read lot of tutorials explaining how to install it on a PC with IDE hard disk, but my PC has a SATA HDD. How can I install Jas Mac OS X on a PC with a SATA hard drive? With JAS, it does not show any of my hard drives drives during the OS X install.
