• How do I expose a webapp on :8090, even though firewall allows only :80 and :22

  I am a noob in Server related stuff, so bear me. I use amazon webservices (EC2) on which I have a webapp running on jetty, which runs on port 8090. I deploy the webapp through the usual method of java -jar start.jar So then to access the app, I have to add a port in the URL, like this: someIP:8090/app But just typing someIP in the browser takes me to a page that shows It works! This is the default web page for this server. The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet. which I assume is apache. I have apache, tomcat and jetty installed. What can I do so that I dont have to specify the port? Do I have to perform port-forwarding? Thanks a lot.

• Plink/Putty fail on return

  Any one have any idea why a remote command to a NetApp filer would fail when using Plink/Putty (to execute a command) across 2 networks? Everything is open both ways (multiple firewalls), but the filer seems to be responding from port 22 to some random port. So my Windows box on the other side doesn't know to answer because the target port isn't 22. Any thoughts?

• Dell N7110 i7 overheats and doesn't boot when anything is plugged into the USB3 port

  When i plug in any devices (mouse, keyboard) into usb 3.0 system dell n7110 overheats and fan goes crazy with terrible noise. So i'm using 1 usb 2.0 slot now with a usb hub. It doesn't solve the problem completely but system stays at a low fan rate for a longer time. I've tried to lower CPU frequency, but in my case (DELL INSPIRON N7110 i7 on Linux 3.0.0-14-generic #23-Ubuntu SMP Mon Nov 21 20:28:43 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) CPU was pretty cool (51 C) and still the same horrible fan noise. Looks like there is no such problems with ubuntu 10.04 (but there're some other problems). Ubuntu even doesn't boot if anything is plugged into usb 3.0

• Dell PR03X port replicator and DisplayPort to DVI adapter not detecting second monitor

  Hi, I have a dell M4400 connected to a PR03X port replicator/docking station. I use the DVI port to connect it to a first Dell 2208WFP monitor and I'm trying to use a DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter to connect it to a second Dell 2208WFP monitor. The second monitor, connected via the DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter immediately goes into sleep mode and the laptop doesn't detect it. What is really weird is that it did detect it the first time I plugged it in but after I unplugged the monitor and plugged it back in it stopped working. I swapped the monitors round and it detected them both but after unplugging the monitor connected via the DisplayPort-to-DVI and plugging it in again it stopped working. Both monitors work if plugged in directly to the DVI port. Is there some way to force re-detection? Any ideas? Thanks, Mark

• How to Connect Firewire Camcorder to Laptop without firewire port

  I Have a Sony Camcorder w/ a 4-pin firewire output. I have HP laptop I want to use it with, but the laptop, does not have a firewire port, just VGA, HDMI, USB, ESATA, Ethernet, and Modem. In addition, It doesn't have a PC Card slot for adding a Firewire card. Googling for "Firewire to USB adapter" returns a lot of hits, but no product that seems to do what I want. I assume I need a USB dongle that gives a firewire port and has drivers so that the PC sees it as a regular firewire port. Thanks for any recommendations

  I have a Linux machine and a Windows machine behind a router that implements NAT (the diagram might be overkill, but was fun to make): I am forwarding RDP port (3389) on the router to the Linux machine because I want to audit RDP connections. For the Linux machine to forward RDP traffic, I wrote these iptables rules: iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 3389 -j DNAT --to-destination win-box iptables -A FORWARD -p tcp --dport 3389 -j ACCEPT The port is listening on the Windows machine: C:\Users\nimmy>netstat -a Active Connections Proto Local Address Foreign Address State (..snip..)   Hi, I have a Brocade SAN Fabric Switch, a 200E. When using the web based management interface "SwitchExplorer" I can click the port, and I see "Port Administration Services". In the first screen of data that appreas, there's a row called "Health" which has value "Unmonitored". Do you know how to set this port to be Monitored? And if also - what "Health" monitoring does? I'm hoping it'll email or log if there's a connection or disconnection.. Many thanks for looking... Kenny

• Accessing a Web Service: Learning Resource needed

  I have been searching for resources to learn (Java) Web Services. Although I have found a lot of resources and tutorials on JWS, I am confused with the version numbers, the abbreviations and Metro. Plus the last update to Metro was in 2008. Is it a worthwile thing to learn? I wanted to learn how to access Web Services, since an upcoming project is about accessing one. I have some experience with OAuth on Twitter(using code available). Things I know about the project: I have to access a Web Service. Java is the preferred platform to use(Although I know I can use any). Axis can be used to access the Web Service(I have never used Axis) I have a meeting scheduled to learn more, but I sure don't want to look silly since I am no Java expert, have never created or accessed Web Services using Java. My Questions: 1.Can someone point me to a tutorial which will help me learn how to access a already running Web Service (Preferably SOAP(?), not REST. It's XML based) 2. Will you recommend using PHP or Python to do the work of accessing the web service? I am expecting a lot of nay saying, but I hope I get some answers too. I will clarify things if needed.

• Understanding Service Compensation part of Industrial SOA series

  Some of the most important SOA design patterns that we have successfully applied in projects will be described in this article. These include the Compensation pattern and the UI mediator pattern, the Common Data Format pattern and the Data Access pattern. All of these patterns are included in Thomas Erl's book, "SOA Design Patterns", and are presented here in detail, together with our practical experiences. We begin our "best of" SOA pattern collection with the Compensation pattern. Compensation is required in error situations in an SOA, as multiple atomic service operations cannot generally be linked with classic transactions this would violate the principle of loose coupling. An error situation of this sort will occur, particularly if service operations are combined into processes or new services during orchestration or by applying the Composite pattern, and the transaction bracket has to be expanded as a result. We need mechanisms to undo the effects of individual services (the status changes in the overall system) and to ensure that a consistent system state is maintained at all times, so as to preserve system integrity. For the Compensation pattern, we would like to address the following questions: Why is compensation important in relation to SOA? • i am not able to connect to the application hosted on port 80

  I am trying to access an application that is hosted on port 80. When i try the url from my personal computer , the site is not reachable but the same url on the server( which hosts the application) i am able to access the site. When i disable the firewall then i am able to access the site from my pc. So there is some rule which is blocking this port. How do i determine what windows firewall rule is blocking this port. I have disables IIS as well. Kindly point me in the right direction

The problem is that when I work from office my script works fine but running a script from my home while on office VPN generates connection error.   I have developed a (off-line) board game that I would like to translate to an online/social game in an isometric grid perspective. My background is in .NET web development, so I'm very comfortable with C#, HTML, jQuery/javascript. Still getting my feet wet with HTML5. I have familiarity with Flash, but I haven't worked with it in years. I'm also interested in working with Azure for hosting the back-end. Ultimately I'd like this game to have persistent leaderboard/achievements and therefore be able to log in through FB and Kong and the like. Obviously, I'm not looking for 'here's exactly how to do all of this'. But I would love some opinions on where to start, particularly given my background and goals.   Hi.. I have cisco switch 3560 and want to create vlans where in i can have a single port in multiple vlans. I tried creating one port e.g fa0/23 as trunk and then allowed it through multiple vlans but it doesnt work. The said port fa0/23 is not traceable through vlans. Example of what i am looking to establish. Vlan 1 : fa0/1 , fa0/2 , fa0/23 vlan 2 : fa0/3, fa0/4,fa0/23 vlan 3 : fa0/5,fa0/6,fa0/23 The Switchport multi command is not working on this switch which i always execute on cisco catalys 3500xl

• Is there a way to disable a particular pci port

  I have a MB with 2 nics on it. a switch burned up and took out one of them. there is no way to turn them off individually in the bios. is there a way to turn off one of the ports. unmap it,unbind it, power it down so the system doesnt see it at after boot. they are mapped as 0000:02.08.0 and 0000:02.08.1 I want to turn the second one off somehow. Since they both use the same driver, blacklisting the module will take out both of them. Normally I would just live with it but it seems there should be a way to do that like in windows (gasp)--just disable it. I Actually have the exact same problem on another comp running XCP so this will be a 2fer if it gets figured out. the OS is 12.4 lts server with xen on it. THX

  I know this can be done on Linux with JIRA, using mod_proxy, but I'm not sure if its possible on Windows: Say we have a Windows server running IIS 7.0 and serving up pages on port 80, via an address like: http://twiddle.something.com We then install JIRA on the server, it uses its bundles Apache web server to serve stuff up on port 8080, like this: http://twiddle.something.com:8080 Is there a way to configure IIS and Apache so that JIRA runs off a port 80 folder, as in: http://twiddle.something.com still hits IIS http://twiddle.something.com/Jira hits JIRA on Apache? Thanks edit: I guess we might also want to throw SSL into the mix for JIRA too....

  I have launched an instance of EC2. Initially the security group I created did not have the port 80 open. I sshed and installed Apache etc, and now want to open port 80. I am using elasticfox. So I go to Security Group - [My Group name] - Grant new permission Open up the port 80(Http with TCP) for network range 0.0.0.0/0 Now my assumption is that these ports should be opened up on the instance, but the instance is not responding on the allocated IPs, public DNS entry. What should I do next?

  Hi, I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04 installed on my desktop box. I have got a new laptop and I will be using it from now on. But I will have to do the setup all over again (setting up applications/updates). Plus many of my preferences and tweaks I've had in my desktop will be lost and those too I will have to all over again. Is there an easy way where I can just take image or something and use it in my laptop?? Any help/pointers/links are much appreciated.
