  • C# SerialPort.GetPortNames() behavior

    In my C# 2008 application, I use the SerialPort.GetPortNames() function to retrieve the list of currently available ports. What I have noticed is, when ever I plug in a USB device, it's port number i s shown in the list on my Application and when I unplug it and refresh the list, the port number is no longer there. One phase of the application involves reading/writing data from/to the device continuously. Now, my expectation is, If I unplug the device during the operation and get the current Port list using SerialPort.GetPortNames(), the Port Name will not be there and I can use that to make the decision that the device has been unplugged. To my surprise, the Port name is still found despite having it removed Why is the program behaving like this? The port name isn't listed when in no-communication mode. Does it have something to do with the device being removed when it's communicating?

  • Nagios3: Conditional operators for service checks?

    I'm trying to setup Nagios to monitor my various using hostgroups to define 'machine roles', against which I run services to check the machines by role. However, I'd like to use conditional operators that would enable me to run the service check against an intersection of two host groups, rather than their unions... i.e. using &&, ||, or () operators. For example, imagine I have the following servers: www-eu: Linux WWW (Apache) server, in the EU www-us: Windows WWW (IIS) server, in the US (West coast) ftp-eu: Linux FTP server, in the EU ftp-us: Windows FTP server, in the US I would want to create the following host groups: US-Servers: www-us, ftp-us EU-Servers: www-eu, ftp-eu WWW-Servers: www-us, www-eu FTP-Servers: ftp-us, ftp-eu Now say I'm interested in checking the HTTP response time for my web servers. Then let's say this particular Nagios service is running from the US (West Coast), and that I have a command called *check_http_response_time*. This command will check the responsiveness of the HTTP server, which I can provide an argument which defines the max response time before raising critical. My command might look like: check_http_response_time $HOSTNAME$ 50 Now traditionally, I can run my checks by specifying a list of host or hostgroups. define service{ use local-service hostgroup_name WWW-Servers # Servers = www-us, www-eu servicegroups WWW Checks service_description Check HTTP Response Time check_command check_http_response_time!50 } However, with the above service definition, given my Nagios service is in US West, I could reasonably expect that my EU server will return critical. Really, I want different thresholds for each region (50 for US West, 200 for EU.) I would have to permutate my service for each host and set their custom threshold, or alternatively permutate out my service groups by role & region (i.e. WWW-Servers-EU), and run my specific thresholds against those. Though the latter is better, both are much messier than I'd like... What I would love, and what this post is asking for, is a way to use hostgroups to perform an intersection using conditional logic, rather than a simple union. It might look like: define service{ use local-service hostgroup_name WWW-Servers && US-Servers servicegroups WWW Checks service_description Check HTTP Response Time check_command check_http_response_time!50 } It then would run the check only against servers that are in both WWW-Servers and US-Servers, in my example, just www-us. The benefits of such a feature would be significant for Nagios services configured for large-scale. Is this feature available? If it isn't, will it be available in the future? Is there an alternative way to accomplish this given the most recent Nagios version? Any tips/suggestions are most appreciated! Dave

  • Asp.Net application/web service not working on Vista/IIS7: access right problem?

    I have an .Net 3.5 based web service running at http://localhost/serivce.svc/. Then I have a Asp.Net application running at http://localhost/myApp. In Application_Load my App reads some XML configuration from the web service. That works fine on my machine, but: On Vista with IIS7 the request to the web services fails. The web service can be accessed via the browser without any problem. I configured the app pool of my App to run as admin. I added the admin to the IIS_USRS group, but it still cannot access the web service. impersonate=true/false seems not to make a difference.

  • How to add a Web Reference to a SSL web service?

    Hi, I have a web service in a C#/3.5 project which has been running fine. This is until I set the "SSL port" in IIS to 443 and set the "IIS - Directory Security - Secure Communications - Require secure channel (SSL)" option to true. Now, the web reference cannot be updated and I cannot add a new web reference to the web service in that site. When I try to view the service in a browse using just HTTP I get the "This page must be viewed over a secure channel" and when viewed with HTTPS on the front I get "This web page not available." Could someone tell me how to get a Web Reference added using Visual Studio to this secure web service, please? Thanks, Matt.

  • setting up log4j for gmail, does not recognize System.setProperty("mail.smtps.port", "587")

    Hi I am trying to setup a smtpappender for log4j using gmail as the smtp host. I have read that the port number needs to be 465 or 587 (depending on tls or ssl) and that log4j for some reason doesnt allow a different port to be set inside log4j.properties configuration file. I have read that the best way of doing this would be to use System.setProperty which would change the default javaxmail port to gmail. However when I try to set the System.property entries the the default port still remains as 25 System.setProperty("mail.smtp.starttls.enable", "true"); System.setProperty("mail.smtp.port", "587"); I was wondering if someone could help me out, I am open to suggestions, I just need to smtpAppender to work for gmail, dont really care how to get it to work. Can anyone recommend such a service that is unlikely to have been disabled for security reasons on corporate sites.     I have developed the application for windows mobile 5.0 and .net compact framework 2.0 sp2. This application communicates to the hardware device using serial port. This application works fine in windows mobile 5.0 based PDAs. I have handled data received event to get the data from serial port. But when I run my application on windows mobile 6.1 and .net compact framework 3.5, my application hangs on serial port close API call. There are many workarounds mentioned in the .net compact framework blog like (closing the com port on different thread, opening the port in the beginning of the application and close once application exists, polling for data instead of event handling), but nothing is working consistently.

  • How to stop an Android Service ONLY when there are no other activities in my app running?

    Is there a way I can test if there are any other activities in my app still alive? I am looking to stop a service in an onDestroy method, but only want to do this if there are no other activities from my app still alive on the stack. I have the call stop the service in the main activity's onDestroy() method. This works perfect EXCEPT that if a user launches my app, then launches a few activities in my app, then hits the home screen and RELAUNCHES my app, they will subvert my order and the main activity will now be above other activities of my app. From this state, if they hit the back button and 'back out' of my home screen they will trigger the onDestroy() method and kill the service even though there are other activities open on the stack. I want to avoid this by stopping the service ONLY if I am sure there are no other activities of mine open on the stack. Possible?

    I want to control LED with C# using only USB port. I don't want to attach any other device with USB. I just want to attach LED directly to USB port pins and program it (blink etc). How can i do that? I am new to hardware programming and it will be my first program. EDIT: I can do it already (blink LED) using printer port by attaching one led pin to data pin and other to ground. How can i do the same with USB port? My motherboard does not have a printer port. USB is the only option.

  • Fast response on first Socket I/O request but slow every other time when communicating with remote serial port

    I'm using sockets to pass Serial commands to a remote device. And the response to that request is sent back and printed out. However, I am having a problem in that the first time it is instant but the rest of the time it can take up to 20 seconds to receive a reply. I'm not asking about the hardware bit (should be easy), but I don't know where to begin writing the software. I don't want a high level library that can send bytes to a device - I literally want to switch on/off certain pins. I'm running Linux and I want to do this in Java, so would I just need a library? It would be nice if the library has good documentation and is easy to use, but if not then a short example code will help me get started.

    Map/Reduce is a great concept for sorting large quantities of data at once. What to do if you have small parts of data and you need to reduce it all the time? Simple example - choosing a service for request. Imagine we have 10 services. Each provides services host with sets of request headers and post/get arguments. Each service declares it has 30 unique keys - 10 per set. service A: name id ... Now imagine we have a distributed services host. We have 200 machines with 10 services on each. Each service has 30 unique keys in there sets. but now to find to which service to map the incoming request we make our services post unique values that map to that sets. We can have up to or more than 10 000 such values sets on each machine per each service. service A machine 1 name = Sam id = 13245 ... service A machine 1 name = Ben id = 33232 ... ... service A machine 100 name = Ron id = 777888 ... So we get 200 * 10 * 30 * 30 * 10 000 == 18 000 000 000 and we get 500 requests per second on our gateway each containing 45 items 15 of which are just noise. And our task is to find a service for request (at least a machine it is running on). On all machines all over cluster for same services we have same rules. We can first select to which service came our request via rules filter 10 * 30. and we will have 200 * 30 * 10 000 == 60 000 000. So... 60 mil is definitely a problem... I hope to get on idea of mapping 30 * 10 000 onto some artificial neural network alike Perceptron that outputs 1 if 30 words (some hashes from words) from the request are correct or if less than Perceptron should return 0. And I’ll send each such Perceptron for each service from each machine to gateway. So I would have a map Perceptron <-> machine for each service. Can any one tall me if my Perceptron idea is at least “sane”? Or normal people do it some other way? Or if there are better ANNs for such purposes?

  • phpmyadmin login redirect fails with custom ssl port

    The server is running Ubuntu 10.10, Apache 2.2.16, PHP 5.3.3-1ubuntu9.3, phpMyAdmin 3.3.7deb5build0.10.10.1. Since this same server is also running Zimbra on port 443, I've configured apache to serve SSL on port 81. So far, I have one CMS script running on this virtual host successfully. However, when I access /phpmyadmin (set up with the default alias) on my custom ssl port and submit the login form, I am redirected to http://vhost.domain.com:81/index.php?TOKEN=foo (note the http:// instead of the https:// that the login url was using). This generates an Error 400 Bad Request complaining about "speaking plain HTTP to an SSL-enabled server port." I can then manually change the http:// to https:// in the URL and use phpmyadmin as expected. I was annoyed enough to spend an hour trying to fix it and now even more annoyed that I cannot figure it out. I've tried various things, including: Adding $cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri'] = 'https://vhost.domain.com:81/phpmyadmin/'; to the /usr/share/phpmyadmin/config.inc.php file but this did not correct the problem (even though /usr/share/phpmyadmin/libraries/auth/cookie.auth.lib.php looks like it should honor it and use it as the redirect). Adding $cfg['ForceSSL'] = 1; to the same config.inc.php but then apache spirals into an infinite redirect. Adding a rewrite rule to the vhost-ssl conf file in apache but I was unable to figure out the condition to use when http:// was present along with the correct ssl port of :81. Lots of googling. Everything in the apache config seems to work ok - the rewrite from non-ssl to ssl, the http authentication, the problem only happens when I am submitting the login form for phpmyadmin from https://vhost.domain.com:81/index.php. Other configs: The phpmyadmin config is completely default and the php.ini has only had some minor changes to memory and timeout limits. These seem to work fine, as mentioned, another php script runs with no problem and phpmyadmin works great once I manually enter in the correct schema after login. I'm looking for either a bandaid I can add to save me the trouble of manually entering in the https:// after login, a real fix that will make phpmyadmin behave as I think it should or some greater understanding of why my desired config is not possible.

  • Unable to host WCF service correctly in IIS7

    I have a WCF Service library written in .NET 4.0. I have a WCF application (in order to host this service in IIS) within the same solution. It contains the WCF library assembly reference and a service.svc file pointing to the service from the library along with a web.config that is a replica of the WCF service library's app.config. The WCF application is set to host the service in IIS7 (the virtual directory has been set). The same solution contains an ASP.NET Webforms solution to which I have added a service reference pointing to the WCF service I hosted in IIS (as mentioned). When i start an instance of this ASP.NET Web application, I get a message saying that "The WCF service has been hosted" and the ASP.NET application can access the data from it correctly. However, when i try and access this data via a service reference added to an MVC 2 Web Application on the same machine in a different solution (pointing to the service hosted in IIS), I get a "The remote server returned an error: (405) Method Not Allowed." protocol exception . However, the MVC application is able to access the service data if I manually invoke an instance of the WCF Application that I was using to host the WCF Service Library from the other solution. I am using VS2010 Beta 2 as my development IDE. I have been stuck with this issue for a while now. Any help would be appreciated. With this service pack for Visual Studio an update to the .NET Framework 4.0 is also released. INSTALLMESSAGE_WARNING [Warning 1946.Property 'System.AppUserModel.ExcludeFromShowInNewInstall' for shortcut 'Manage Help Settings - ENU.lnk' could not be set.]. Canceling the installation didn’t work and I had to kill the setup.exe process. When reapplying it again, rollbacks were reported, so I reapplied it again – this time with succes.

    From the unity-panel-service manpages: DESCRIPTION The unity-panel-service program is normally started automatically by the Unity shell (which gets started as a compiz module) and is used to draw panels which can then be used for the global menu, or to hold indicators. How can the unity-panel-service be non-automatically started abnormally? In other words, how is it arbitrarily manually started and/or stopped? The manpage implication is that this can be done without stopping the Unity shell. This answer seems promising: Is it possible to restart the unity panel without restarting compiz? but ... not. The process can be killed from System Monitor but it restarts automatically. references: How can menu bars that require a right click be activated like Ubuntu versions <10.10? The very best Contact Centres are those with high first contact resolution, customer satisfaction and agent productivity. But how many companies really believe they are the best? And how many believe that they can be? We know that with the right tools, companies can aspire to greatness – and achieve it. Core to this is ensuring their agents have the best tools that give them the right information at the right time, so they can focus on the customer and provide a personalised, professional and efficient service. Today there are multiple channels through which customers can communicate with you; phone, web, chat, social to name a few but regardless of how they communicate, customers expect a seamless, quality experience. Most contact centre agents need to switch between lots of different systems to locate the right information. This hampers their productivity, frustrates both the agent and the customer and increases call handling times. With this in mind, Oracle RightNow has designed and refined a suite of add-ins to optimize the Agent Desktop. Each is designed to simplify and adapt the agent experience for any given situation and unify the customer experience across your media channels. Let’s take a brief look at some of the most useful tools available and see how they make a difference. Contextual Workspaces: The screen where agents do their job. Agents don’t want to be slowed down by busy screens, scrolling through endless tabs or links to find what they’re looking for. They want quick, accurate and easy. Contextual Workspaces are fully configurable and through workspace rules apply if, then, else logic to display only the information the agent needs for the issue at hand . Assigned at the Profile level, different levels of agent, from a novice to the most experienced, get a screen that is relevant to their role and responsibilities and ensures their job is done quickly and efficiently the first time round. Agent Scripting: Sometimes, agents need to deliver difficult or sensitive messages while maximising the opportunity to cross-sell and up-sell. After all, contact centres are now increasingly viewed as revenue generators. Containing sophisticated branching logic, scripting helps agents to capture the right level of information and guides the agent step by step, ensuring no mistakes, inconsistencies or missed opportunities. Guided Assistance: This is typically used to solve common troubleshooting issues, displaying a series of question and answer sets in a decision-tree structure. This means agents avoid having to bookmark favourites or rely on written notes. Agents find particular value in these guides - to quickly craft chat and email responses. What’s more, by publishing guides in answers on support pages customers, can resolve issues themselves, without needing to contact your agents. And b ecause it can also accelerate agent ramp-up time, it ensures that even novice agents can solve customer problems like an expert. Desktop Workflow: Take a step back and look at the full customer interaction of your agents. It probably spans multiple systems and multiple tasks. With Desktop Workflows you control the design workflows that span the full customer interaction from start to finish. As sequences of decisions and actions, workflows are unique in that they can create or modify different records and provide automation behind the scenes. This means your agents can save time and provide better quality of service by having the tools they need and the relevant information as required. And doing this boosts satisfaction among your customers, your agents and you – so win, win, win! I have highlighted above some of the tools which can be used to optimise the desktop; however, this is by no means an exhaustive list. In approaching your design, it’s important to understand why and how your customers contact you in the first place. Once you have this list of “whys” and “hows”, you can design effective policies and procedures to handle each category of problem, and then implement the right agent desktop user interface to support them. This will avoid duplication and wasted effort. Five Top Tips to take away: Start by working out “why” and “how” customers are contacting you. Implement a clean and relevant agent desktop to support your agents. If your workspaces are getting complicated consider using Desktop Workflow to streamline the interaction. Enhance your Knowledgebase with Guides. Agents can access them proactively and can be published on your web pages for customers to help themselves. Script any complex, critical or sensitive interactions to ensure consistency and accuracy.
