  • Live CD works OK. Is it OK to assume a new install will work?

    I've got a Toshiba a505 laptop and tried the live CD with great results. However, I haven't found any reports on this PC working 100% OK on Ubuntu 10.10 yet. I do have seen (and tried installing myself) some reports that 10.04 didn't work (without some dirty hacking). In regular circumstances, is it OK to assume that a new install will work if the live CD works? Are there any tools I can run to check compatibility? Thanks!

    I have a webserver that has an ssl certificate applied to a subdomain https://shop.mydomain.com. I also have the hostname http://mydomain.com that has no ssl certificate. When invoking https://mydomain.com, browsers issue a warning that a certificate could not be verified because the webserver is identifying itself as https://shop.mydomain.com. I would like all traffic that hits https://mydomain.com to be redirected to http://mydomain.com, and leave https://shop.mydomain.com as is. My httpd.conf file generally looks like this: < VirtualHost 122.11.11.21:80 > ServerName shop.mydomain.com .. regular old port 80 .. < /VirtualHost > < VirtualHost 122.11.11.21:443 > ServerName shop.mydomain.com .. SSL applies here .. < /VirtualHost > < VirtualHost 122.11.11.21:80 > ServerName mydomain.com .. regular old port 80 .. < /VirtualHost > It does not look as if I have SSL set up for https://mydomain.com yet one can invoke SSL mode and the browser identifies the connection as https://shop.mydomain.com. I need to redirect from https://mydomain.com because for some reason, Google has indexed my website with this url even though it shows a warning. I have tried various methods to get this to redirect and nothing has worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How powerful of a PC do you need to edit HD videos?

    I have a Core2Quad Q8200 (2.3GHz) with 4GB of RAM, a 512MB PCIe video card, and a SATA-2 HD. Yet it still isn't fast enough to edit 720i/p video in Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere/Aftereffects. My RAM usage never peaks over 1.6GB, but my CPU cores make it to 95% quick! Right now the preview panes in all these programs lag to bad to actually work on the videos. I get to see 1-3 frames every second or two! So how fast do I have to go? At what point will my CPU be fast enough to actually edit these videos? I have to assume that regular people and their regular sub $2k computers can actually work with this footage. Another way to answer this is, how fast is the PC you used to edit videos? Update: I'ts worth noting that now that I have Adobe Pre/AF CS4 I am more interested in getting that working than my older Vegas 6. If you didn't have to re-run RAM preview every, single, time you made one change it would be my answer. But since I like to test many filters and effects before choosing one - I have to re-render a 1-sec section of footage over-and-over and it drives me nuts waiting. Perhaps a motherboard with Dual Xeon chips or something would be able to handle this. It would probably be as much as a dual-crossfire setup and would also speed up other applications.

  • Export Outlook Express XP into Outlook 2007 Windows 7

    I've searched the forum and it seems my need is a little different than the posts which have already been made. I have an old XP laptop which I was using Outlook Express for one of my mail accounts (a work account). I also ran regular Outlook for another (personal). I want to have both of these accounts on my new PC. My new PC is running Windows 7 wiht Office 2007. I used the Windows transfer cable and things worked failry well. My regular Outlook files all came over well, but nothing for Outlook Express. I really would like to take this time to somehow export my OE files into my Outlook 2007. I would really like to keep the account which imported in on Outlook seperate. Question 1: Is there a way to import my OE files into Outlook 2007? Question 2: Is there a way to have two seperate email accounts in Outlook without combining them? Basically I want to have a work email and a personal and keep them seperate. If I can't have two seperate emails with Outlook, can anyone suggest something which would allow me to export my old Outlook (the old personal emails) into another program so that I can at least use my work email on Outlook 2007? Hopefully this isn't too confusing.

  • Outlook express 6 crashes after "synchonizing account"

    [EDIT: Revised OE version to match reality] I use Outlook Express (OE) 6.00.3790.3959 to read newsgroups. I regularly scan through about 100 newsgroups. When I select a newsgroup, and then select "synchronize account", OE goes through the newsgroups visibly updating the unread message count. It gets apparantly to the end, and then comes back to check for Watched Conversations, of which I typically have a few scattered across the newsgroups. It invariably crashes with some kind of access fault. A dialog box pops up saying "Want to debug with "; I invariable say No, and the process goes away. I restart OE, select the newsgroup, and skip "Synchronize Account"; I am able to read news and everything seems just fine. This behavior has occurred since I set it up several months ago. Is the newsgroups database screwed up? Can I run something like CHKDSK or Outlooks PST repair to fix things up? Any suggestions as to what to do? The system is Windows XP 64 system installed in January 2008. I accept Windows Updates and install them on a regular basis. I use Outlook (not OE) for regular email an it behaves perfectly normally.

    This morning when I tried to turn on my computer, the monitor would not display anything. The computer is on, but no UI on the monitor and no beep. I turned off the computer and turn it back on again. This time, the computer was on for about 2 seconds and automatically turned itself off for about 2 second and automatically turned itself back on. This happened two times without the monitor displaying any UI. On the third try, the computer did the same thing but when it turned itself back on, the monitor displayed this: American Megatrends Asus P8P67 Le ACPI bios Revision 1011 CPU Intel Core i5 2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz Speed: 3300MHz Total Memory 4096 MB (DDR3-1333) USB Devices Total: 0 Drive, 1 Keyboard, 1 Mouse, 2 Hubs Detected ATA/ATAPI Deivces SATA6G_2 Hitachi HDs821010CLA 332 SATA3G_1 Corsair force 3 SSD SATA3G_2 HL-DT-ST DB-RE UH12CS28 Overclocking Failed! Please enter setup to reconfigure your system. Press F1 to Run Setup. After I pressed F1, it went into the Asus EF1 Bios Utility. I couldn't do anything in there so I just exited. After which, the computer auto turned off and on again and I was able to use the PC like regular. This has never happened to this computer before and the day before, nothing seemed wrong, just regular use and some gaming.

  • IBM Thinkpad 240 - Best way to boot from floppy to USB - Best Linux for 300 MHz 128 MB RAM 800x600 s

    Mostly I still have that old 'ultraportable' laptop that is mostly like a pre-netbook era laptop and a friend and programmer needs a computer because the one he was using just broke and he has to wait until the new one arrive in 4-6 weeks ... This laptop has no LAN connection and CD-ROM so be prepared for a real challenge! All hardware is well supported on Windows XP (included drivers on the Windows XP CD) and on Linux out-of-the-box (but the screen need a special configuration.) Mostly any Linux that will work well with Skype (USB or regular headset), any MSN client and a text writer for code will do. What I have tested so far: Slitaz 2 don't boot because the floppy of GRUB4DOS don't see the USB drive (fully working and tested on my regular laptop), Damn Small Linux was working but was needing a special screen configuration that I don't remember (in the boot options of the floppy) and now I'm thinking about Puppy Linux that is seen to work totally out of the box with it but I will need an old Puppy version (1 or 2 I think) and the Wakepup floppy ... If you got some ideas to help or to try I'm open!

  • Sonicwall TZ210 - Set up public wifi on separate subnet & interface

    I want to set up a public wifi by connecting another router to the X6 interface, and put it on a separate subnet (192.168.10.0/24) & in the DMZ Zone to keep it away from the regular LAN. I believe I have the network settings correct: the router has acquired the IP and DNS information from the TZ210, and the TZ210 shows it as an active DHCP lease. X6 is in the DMZ. I now have a routing/NAT/firewall problem, since I can't get any traffic to travel from the subnet to the internet. I can't get to any external websites and can't ping the TZ210 from the subnet. X0 is the regular LAN, and X1 is the WAN. Looking for any tips or tutorials on this.     While investigating the effects of filtered tokens on my file permissions, I noticed that one of my global security groups is being filtered in addition to the regular system-defined filtered groups. My Active Directory environment is a single-domain forest on the Windows Server 2003 functional level. I'll call the domain "mydomain.example.com". I am logged onto a Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition machine (not a domain controller) as a member of the "MYDOMAIN\Domain Admins" group and the "MYDOMAIN\MySecurityGroup" global security group (among others). When I run "whoami /groups" from an elevated command prompt, I see the full list of groups to which my account belongs as expected. When I run "whoami /groups" from a regular, non-elevated command prompt, I see the same list of groups, but the following groups are described as "Group used for deny only". BUILTIN\Administrators MYDOMAIN\Schema Admins MYDOMAIN\Offer Remote Assistance Helpers MYDOMAIN\MySecurityGroup Numbers 1 through 3 above are expected based on Microsoft documentation; number 4 is not. The "MYDOMAIN\MySecurityGroup" global security group is a group that I created. It contains three non-built-in global security groups, and these security groups contain only non-built-in user accounts. (That is, I created all of the accounts and groups that are members of the "MYDOMAIN\MySecurityGroup" global security group.) There are other, similar groups of which my account is a member that are not being filtered out of my logon token, and this group is not granted any specific user rights in the security settings of this computer or in Group Policy. What would cause this one group to be filtered out of my logon token?
