  • Installing Ruby Gems behind a Proxy

    It appears this topic has been covered a few times before, but those solutions have only gotten me so far. I now have my sources properly updated and I am able to query for gems without an error but I keep getting empty results for my searches. I installed rubysspi and copied over the spa.rb file as mentioned in the readme. The readme also suggested using this line which did not work for me based on my install path: ruby -rspa 'C:\Program Files\ruby\gem' list --remote sspi So I switched it to my install directory off the root: ruby -rspa 'C:\ruby\gem' list --remote sspi But that also didn't work so a search for the gem file located it in the bin directory so this command finally worked for me: ruby -rspa 'C:\ruby\bin\gem' list --remote sspi But I got empty results back: *** REMOTE GEMS *** SO I tried other gems and had the same results. Then I listed my gem sources and rubygems is listed as expected. Am I missing something else? c:\ruby>gem sources *** CURRENT SOURCES *** http://rubygems.org

  • rbenv not changing ruby version

    So i installed rbenv according to the github directions. I am running OSX but i have tried this on a Ubuntu 12.04 VM and got the same results. The following is what i get in my terminal when i try to change ruby versions: rbenv versions * 1.9.3-p0 (set by /Users/user/.rbenv/version) 1.9.3-p125 rbenv global 1.9.3-p0 rbenv rehash ruby -v ruby 1.8.7 (2011-12-28 patchlevel 357) [universal-darwin11.0] which ruby /usr/bin/ruby Anyone have any ideas as to why rbenv isnt actually switching the ruby version like it thinks it is? Aslo there is no .rbenv file in the local directory that would be causing the ruby version to default to 1.8.7 rbenv local rbenv: no local version configured for this directory

I'm really just trying to figure out where to hang the classes/modules/methods in the framework and whit kind of object |p| should be. My first inclination was to create a PageBuilder class that implements header, body and sidebar methods. But I got stuck on the rendering pipeline to get everything output just right. Is there a gem that already provides this type of semantic generation? If not I'd love any insight on how to set this up.

  • Is unobtrusive RJS files in Rails 3 considered a good idea?

    I'm working on implementing javascript functionality in my rails 3 app. Now that rjs is supposedly unobtrusive (I honestly don't know a lot about rjs), is it still "evil"? It seems to me the downside may be a lack of testability, but partial page updates via rjs seem to be easier than jumping through the rails hurdles to make ajax requests via jquery. Thoughts? Examples?

I have search all over Google, but all I seem to find is "run an SQL statement to alter the table to a BIGINT" - This seems a bit hack-ish to me, so I wanted to know if there was a way to specify a bigint in the ruby system like :big_int or something Any ideas?

    I have a bunch of models for Oauth services, things like: TwitterToken GoogleToken There are OAuth versions and OpenID versions for some, so I decided to logically organize my gem like so: lib lib/my-auth-gem lib/my-auth-gem/oauth lib/my-auth-gem/oauth/tokens/google_token ... lib/my-auth-gem/openid/tokens/google_token ... I would like to be able to name my models GoogleToken, rather than MyAuthGem::Oauth::Tokens::GoogleToken. How do I do that? This will be for Rails 2.3+ and Rails 3.

    Hi, Rather than allowing a Ruby method to blindly return the last statement evaluated, is there any advantage to returning nil explicitly? In terms of implementation hiding and reuse, it seems dangerous to blindly allow the last expression evaluated to be returned - isn't there a danger that a user will rely on this only to get a nasty surprise when the implementation is modified? Surely returning nil would be better unless an explicit return value was given. Following on, is there an optimisation that Ruby can make when the return is a simple type rather than a reference to a more complex object? Chris

  • xapian-full installed on mac os x snow leopard but failed with dlopen LoadError

    Since I have tried to install xapian but failed, I try another alternative with xapian-full.     I've spent most of my time in statically typed languages (primarily C#). I have some bad experiences with the Active Record pattern and unit testing, because of the static methods and the mix of entities and data access code. Since the Ruby community probably is the most test driven of the communities out there, and the Rails ActiveRecord seems popular, there must be some way of combining TDD and ActiveRecord based code in Ruby on Rails. I would guess that the problem goes away in dynamic languages, somehow, but I don't see how. So, what's the trick?

  • Problem deploying Rails with Passenger to Mac OS X Leopard Server

    I'm spinning my wheels... Apache is working and serving static html, png, etc. normally. Trying to get Passenger to serve a rails app out of www.mydomain.com/rails/ as it stands when i try to hit my app: www.mydomain.com/rails/myapp/railsclassname I get only an Apache 403 Errors. Nothing in myapp's Production Log. Apache2 access.log: "GET /rails/ HTTP/1.1" 403 1085 Apache2 error.log: [Fri Jun 11 22:44:01 2010] [error] [client 10.0.1.41] File does not exist: /Library/WebServer/wwwroot/rails/railsclassname i've even tried www.mydomain.com/myapp/classname Passenger, obviously, isn't routing requests made into my sub-folder rails/ to my rails app. not sure where i've screwed up. the most obvious thing is "Passenger doesn't seem to be running"... instructions I've followed just say to sudo apachectl graceful, which i've done (as well as stopped/started). new to this so go easy on me! Here's some info that might be helpful. happy to provide more as needed...     I'm having difficulty getting OpenId authentication working with Authlogic. It appears that the problem arose with changes to the open_id_authentication plugin. From what I've read so far, one needs to switch from using gems to using plugins. Here's what I done thus far to get Authlogic-OpenID integration working: Removed relevant gems: authlogic authlogic-oid rack-openid ruby-openid * Installed, configured, and started the authlogic sample application (http://github.com/binarylogic/authlogic_example)--works as expected.     Hi guys. I'm having a problem using ActiveSupport's core extensions on a gem I am developing. I had it working with AS 2.3.8, but as soon as I wanted to port it to 3b4, the extensions stopped working and my test results are filled with lines such as: undefined method `blank?' for "something":String I've included it via gem "activesupport" followed by require "active_support" Is there anything else I need to call to include those extensions?     Hi, I have some URLs, like http://www.example.com/something?param1=value1&param2=value2&param3=value3, and I would like to extract the parameters from these URLs and get them in a Hash. Obviously, I could use regular expressions, but I was just wondering if there was easier ways to do that with Ruby or Rails. I haven't found anything in the Ruby Module 'URI' but perhaps I missed something. In fact, I need a method that would do that : extract_parameters_from_url("http://www.example.com/something?param1=value1&param2=value2&param3=value3") => {:param1 => 'value1', :param2 => 'value2', :param3 => 'value3'} Would you have some advices?     I'd like to use Rails 2.2.2 for one project and Rails 2.3.2 for another. Both are installed. What is rails _2.2.2_ --version supposed to do? I've read that it makes 2.2.2 the working version -- that is, the version that will be used from that point on. But when I check rails --version, I get Rails 2.3.2. So, I also want to know what rails --version tells me; is it just the latest version of Rails that I have or is it the version that will be used for rakes? I know about RVM. Is that the best way to use different versions of Rails on different projects?

  • What is the best way to add categories to posts - Ruby on Rails blog...

    I am new to Ruby and Rails so bear with me please. I have created a very simple blog application with both posts and comments. Everything works great. My next question regarding adding categories. I am wondering the best way to do this. As I can't see too far in front of me yet when it comes to Rails I thought I would ask. To be clear, I would like that a single post can have multiple categories and a category can have multiple posts. Is the best way to do this to create a 'categories' table and then use the posts and categories models to do has_many :posts, has_many :categories? Would I also then set the routes.rb such that posts are embedded under categories? Or is there an easier way by simply adding a category column to the existing posts table? (in which case I would imagine having multiple categories would be difficult).
