    - by Yathi
My 1TB USB 3.0 was working fine earlier in Ubuntu as well as Windows. But lately it is not at all being detected in Ubuntu. It still works fine in Windows. I did update my Ubuntu to 12.10 but I am not sure if that caused the issue. When I connect my HDD and run dmesg | tail: [ 47.804676] usb 4-3: >Device not responding to set address. • Search Engine Influence Should Determine SEO Efforts

When scheduling your SEO duties, take consideration of each search engine's marketshare; and influence. Google is seen as the number one search engine, but still retains less than 65% of Internet searches. With the new implementation of Microsoft (Bing) technology at Yahoo!, their marketshare influence rises to 29.5 percent. This figure is half of Google's total search percentage, however it still represents (approximately) 30 percent; or one in three search clients.

  • How can I force apt to optimize the dependency tree for minimal download size?

    - by ObsessiveSSO?
Some background information: As you may know, in a Debian package, there may be alternative dependencies, written in the CONTROL file as Depends: apache2|something-else, for example. How does apt select which dependencies to choose, and how can I override this so I can minimize download size? I'm on a slow connection on some locations and need it to use the smallest total download size. How can I force it to do so?

A kernel/driver conflict perhaps? I don't see any processes in R or D state that might inflate the load averages artificially, I realise it may be considered low in an 8 thread system but its higher at idle than any normal behaviour I've previously come across. • Coldfusion on VPS, how much JVM heap memory?

    - by Steven Filipowicz
Recently I got a VPS server and I'm running Coldfusion, the website was running fine until it got more and more traffic and I started to encounter 'OutOfMemory' exceptions. I thought simply to rise the memory of the VPS server, but this didn't help. After doing some Google searches I found a setting in de CF Admin settings to set the JVM Heap memory. It was on the standard: Max Heap size 512MB and Min Heap size was empty. After playing around a bit I have now set it to Min 50MB and Max 200MB, good things is that I'm not getting the 'OutOfMemory' exceptions anymore. So far so good! But with about 50 active visitors on the website, the website starts to get slow. The CPU usage is only about 8% (Windows Taskmanager), also the taskmanager show only about 30% of the 3GB RAM in use. So I'm thinking that my values could be tweaked to use more of the RAM. Honestly I don't understand these JVM Memory heap settings, so I have no clue what is a good setting for me. I found a CF script that displays the memory usage, the details are: Heap Memory Usage - Committed 194 MB Heap Memory Usage - Initial 50.0 MB Heap Memory Usage - Max 194 MB Heap Memory Usage - Used 163 MB JVM - Free Memory 31.2 MB JVM - Max Memory 194 MB JVM - Total Memory 194 MB JVM - Used Memory 163 MB Memory Pool - Code Cache - Used 13.0 MB Memory Pool - PS Eden Space - Used 6.75 MB Memory Pool - PS Old Gen - Used 155 MB Memory Pool - PS Perm Gen - Used 64.2 MB Memory Pool - PS Survivor Space - Used 1.07 MB Non-Heap Memory Usage - Committed 77.4 MB Non-Heap Memory Usage - Initial 18.3 MB Non-Heap Memory Usage - Max 240 MB Non-Heap Memory Usage - Used 77.2 MB Free Allocated Memory: 30mb Total Memory Allocated: 194mb Max Memory Available to JVM: 194mb % of Free Allocated Memory: 16% % of Available Memory Allocated: 100% My JVM arguments are: -server -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false -XX:MaxPermSize=192m -XX:+UseParallelGC - Dcoldfusion.rootDir={application.home}/../ -Dcoldfusion.libPath={application.home}/../lib Can I give the JVM more memory? If so, what settings should I use? Thanks very much!!

  • swapping or trashing with vast amounts of unmapped pagecache

    - by Marco
I'm using kubuntu jaunty (i386 32bit), kernel 2.6.28-13-generic. I've 4Gb of RAM, of which only 3317Mb are seen by the system (I guess because of the 32bit system). I'm seeing that the pagecache utilization is continually growing, up to the point that the system is unusable (after a few days). This happens also when I don't do anything (all user applications closed and the bare minimum of services enabled). If enabled, the system starts to use swap space (using it all in the end). Even if swap is disabled, disk activity becomes continuous, with the system unresponsive. For example, right now the system is working (albeit a tad slow), with only Firefox and wing ide running, and I have 2Gb cached with only 45Mb mapped: $ free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3346388 3247328 99060 0 8416 2117980 -/+ buffers/cache: 1120932 2225456 Swap: 2144668 519448 1625220 $ cat /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 3346388 kB MemFree: 97128 kB Buffers: 7872 kB Cached: 2120224 kB SwapCached: 413860 kB Active: 2304596 kB Inactive: 865984 kB Active(anon): 2279168 kB Inactive(anon): 830236 kB Active(file): 25428 kB Inactive(file): 35748 kB Unevictable: 32 kB Mlocked: 32 kB HighTotal: 2492940 kB HighFree: 5456 kB LowTotal: 853448 kB LowFree: 91672 kB SwapTotal: 2144668 kB SwapFree: 1625244 kB Dirty: 84 kB Writeback: 0 kB AnonPages: 629304 kB Mapped: 45768 kB Slab: 45600 kB SReclaimable: 21756 kB SUnreclaim: 23844 kB PageTables: 4468 kB NFS_Unstable: 0 kB Bounce: 0 kB WritebackTmp: 0 kB CommitLimit: 3817860 kB Committed_AS: 3735020 kB VmallocTotal: 122880 kB VmallocUsed: 9352 kB VmallocChunk: 66600 kB HugePages_Total: 0 HugePages_Free: 0 HugePages_Rsvd: 0 HugePages_Surp: 0 Hugepagesize: 4096 kB DirectMap4k: 16376 kB DirectMap4M: 888832 kB If I try to drop the caches, little happens: # sync ; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches ; free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3346388 3220580 125808 0 3020 2100600 -/+ buffers/cache: 1116960 2229428 Swap: 2144668 519356 1625312 Right now I've vm.swappiness = 5, but I've tried also with 0 and 1 (without noticeable differences). • VsFTPd - pam_mkhomedir

    - by Totor
I am trying to set up a FTP server that authenticates against an LDAP server. This part is done and works. My server is VsFTPd on Ubuntu Server 11.04. But I have to create the home directories for my LDAP users. I am trying to user the pam_mkhomedir module but it is not working: when I add its line to the /etc/pam.d/vsftpd file, my users can not login anymore to the FTP server. The problem is that I have very few information on what is wrong. VsFTPd just responds 530: login incorrect and I could not find a way to get debug or error messages from pam_mkhomedir. Here are my different configuration files. The /etc/pam.d/vsftpd file: auth required pam_listfile.so item=user sense=deny file=/etc/ftpusers onerr=succeed auth required pam_ldap.so account required pam_ldap.so password required pam_ldap.so session optional pam_mkhomedir.so skel=/home/skel debug The /etc/vsftpd.conf file: listen=YES anonymous_enable=NO local_enable=YES write_enable=YES dirmessage_enable=YES use_localtime=YES xferlog_enable=YES connect_from_port_20=YES pam_service_name=vsftpd rsa_cert_file=/etc/ssl/private/vsftpd.pem guest_enable=YES session_support=YES log_ftp_protocol=YES tcp_wrappers=YES Permissions on /home and /home/skel: root@ftp:/home# ls -al total 16 drwxrwxrwx 4 root root 4096 2011-10-11 21:19 . drwxr-xr-x 21 root root 4096 2011-09-27 13:32 .. drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 2011-10-11 19:34 skel drwxrwxrwx 5 foo foo 4096 2011-10-11 21:11 foo root@ftp:/home# ls -al skel/ total 16 drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 2011-10-11 19:34 . drwxrwxrwx 4 root root 4096 2011-10-11 21:19 .. -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3352 2011-10-11 19:34 .bashrc -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 675 2011-10-11 19:34 .profile Yes, I know, permissions are not properly set but security is not the issue here: I first need to get it to work. So, to recapitulate: without pam_mkhomedir my LDAP users can login, but they cannot do anything because they are in an empty chrooted jail. If I add pam_mkhomedir, they cannot login anymore. If anyone has an idea why, or know how to get more information from logs, I would be very grateful, thanks.

  • Setting up SQL Server 2005 to use all available memory in 32bit Windows Server 2003 - and verifying

    - by Rizwan Kassim
There are a number of questions along this line - but they either sometimes contradict each other, or don't show how to properly verify that everything is actually working - hopefully this can be comprehensive... I'm running SQL Server 2005 SP3 Standard on Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard. My server has 8GB of memory installed - my system is almost entirely used as a Database Server - there are some services running on them, but the OS + services can run within 1Gb of RAM. What I've done (please tell me if I'm doing something wrong): /3GB in the boot.ini. (To increase the amount of user-space memory available - info) /PAE in the boot.ini. (Windows claimed to be doing PAE even without this switch, somethow.) Enabled AWE in SQL Server. Enabled Lock Pages in Memory Option for users SYSTEM and Local Service. (info). SQL Server Standard doesn't seem to use this until Cumulative Update 4, which isn't installed on my server. (info) Set Min/Max Memory to : 1024Mb/5112Mb After doing all the above, we definately saw a level of improvement - but I'd like now to verify my settings, make sure that I'm making full use of the memory available. (There appeared to be a slowdown when max = 7Gb, so I edged off from that value, but it might have been just perceptual.) To verify, I checked the following levels in PerfMon : Process(sqlserv):Working Set : 76386304 SQL Server(Memory Manager) : Total Server Memory : 3538944 (I saw a doc that noted that this wasn't the full memory used by SQL Server, so I'm not sure whether to trust it) So -- my questions... Should my max be around 7Gb? If not, what should it be? Why is total server memory at 3.5G, when it's been allocated 5G? What is the proper metric for the amount of memory allocated to SQL Server? The Working Set seems a bit large... Am I possibly missing any steps in the setup? Any recommended resources on starting to tune the caching system now? Thanks

  • How much network latency is "typical" for east - west coast USA?

    - by Jeff Atwood
At the moment we're trying to decide whether to move our datacenter from the west coast (Corvallis, OR) to the east coast (NY, NY). However, I am seeing some disturbing latency numbers from my location (Berkeley, CA) to the NYC host. Here's a sample result, retrieving a small .png logo file in Google Chrome and using the dev tools to see how long the request takes: Berkeley to NYC server: 215 ms latency, 46ms transfer time, 261ms total Berkeley to Corvallis server: 114ms latency, 41ms transfer time, 155ms total some URLs if you want to try yourself: http://careers.stackoverflow.com/content/cso/img/logo.png (NY, NY) http://serverfault.com/cache/logo.png (Corvallis, OR) It makes sense that Corvallis, OR is geographically closer to Berkeley, CA so I expect the connection to be a bit faster.. but I'm seeing an increase in latency of +100ms when I perform the same test to the NYC server. That seems .. excessive to me. Particularly since the time spent transferring the actual data only went up 10%, yet the latency went up ten times as much! That feels... wrong... to me. I found a few links here that were helpful (through Google no less!) ... http://serverfault.com/questions/63531/does-routing-distance-affect-performance-significantly http://serverfault.com/questions/61719/how-does-geography-affect-network-latency http://serverfault.com/questions/6210/latency-in-internet-connections-from-europe-to-usa ... but nothing authoritative. So, is this normal? It doesn't feel normal. What is the "typical" latency I should expect when moving network packets from the east coast <--> west coast of the USA?

  • PHP/Linux File Permissions

    - by user1733435
May I ask a question about file permission. I set up Ubuntu server where Apache got running. I have simple php upload form and able to upload file to /var/www/site/uploads as follows. sandbox@sandbox-virtual-machine:/var/www/site/uploads$ ll total 1736 drwxrwxrwx 2 www-data www-data 4096 Oct 18 02:53 ./ drwxrwxrwx 3 sandbox sandbox 4096 Oct 18 00:42 ../ -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data 145998 Oct 18 02:53 3d wallpaper pic.jpg -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data 166947 Oct 18 02:53 3D Wallpapers 9.jpg -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data 1451489 Oct 18 02:53 6453_3d_landscape_hd_wallpapers_green.jpg Is there anyway to upload files and they show up as -rw-r--r-- 1 sandbox sandbox 145998 Oct 18 02:53 3d wallpaper pic.jpg -rw-r--r-- 1 sandbox sandbox 166947 Oct 18 02:53 3D Wallpapers 9.jpg -rw-r--r-- 1 sandbox sandbox 1451489 Oct 18 02:53 6453_3d_landscape_hd_wallpapers_green.jpg so that I could straight away feed them to waiting/running shell script. Right now waiting script(move, checksums, rename, resize, etc) unable to do anything to uploaded files with attributes of www-data. If I just do as local account, such as sandbox@sandbox-virtual-machine:/var/www/site/uploads$touch testfile then the script is able to run as I would like to. Any suggestion would be grateful, thanks in advance as well. Thanks for everyone giving help to me,that I was able to progress. Now I am close to getting solved and append the output sandbox@sandbox-virtual-machine:/var/www/site/uploads$ ll total 388 drwxrwxrwx 2 www-data www-data 4096 Oct 18 04:22 ./ drwxrwxrwx 3 sandbox sandbox 4096 Oct 18 04:17 ../ -rw-r--r-- 1 sandbox sandbox 166947 Oct 18 04:21 3D Wallpapers 9.jpg -rw-r--r-- 1 sandbox sandbox 219808 Oct 18 04:20 adafruit_pi.png -rw-rw-r-- 1 sandbox sandbox 0 Oct 18 04:22 test How may I set permission to uploaded files like 'test' only w difference in middle group. Such as adafruit_pi.png Vs test. Which statement shall I insert to php code, please?

  • What used the linux memory? Low cache, low buffer, not a VM

    - by Jason
First of all, yes, I have read LinuxAteMyRAM, which doesn't explain my situation. # free -tm total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 48149 43948 4200 0 4 75 -/+ buffers/cache: 43868 4280 Swap: 38287 0 38287 Total: 86436 43948 42488 # As shown above, the -/+ buffers/cache: line shows indicates the used memory rate is very high. • What causes "A disk read error occurred, Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart"?

    - by Mehrdad
I have a virtual machine containing Windows XP SP3. When I resized the VHD file (and the embedded partition), and tried booting, I got: A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart Some notes: FixBoot and FixMBR don't help. ChkDsk doesn't help. The partition is indeed active. The partition starts at sector 63 (it also did so before the problem) of cylinder 1, head 1, and is marked as type 0x07 (NTFS) My host OS reads the VHD and the partition completely fine I'm interested in knowing the cause rather than the fix. So "re-format the disk", "reinstall Windows", etc. aren't valid solutions. It's a virtual machine after all... I have nothing to lose, so I don't care about fixing it. I just want to know what's causing this problem, in case I run into it again on a physical machine (which I have done before).
