• Windows Server 2008 R2 grinds to a screeching halt during file copy operations

  When my Windows Server 2008 R2 machine is performing any large disk operations (copying 10GB files from one drive to another, copying similar file over network, merging HyperV snapshots, compressing large files), performance of the whole machine slows down terribly, everything becomes unresponsive. This is noticeable in any situation when the disk access is large enough not to fit in the cache. Are there any settings available for tuning this behaviour? I can accept slower file transfer if this would give me more responsiveness. System details: Dell Optiflex 960, Core 2 Quad Q9650, 8GB RAM, 2 SATA drives - 320GB (ST3320418AS) and 1TB (ST31000528AS), NCQ active on both, Intel 82564LM-3 Gigabit Ethernet, ATI HD 3450 graphics, Intel ICH10 bridge. We have multiple machines like this, every one is exhibiting the same behaviour. I though this was overkill for a workstation, apparently I was mistaken. Update: I guess I shouldn't have mentioned the HyperV at all. The above configuration is a standard workstation setup at the company I work for, this is not a server of any kind. I have at most 3 virtual machines working, and usually I'm the only person accessing them. Never the less, the slowdown occurs even when no VMs are running. On a Linux machine I'd simply ionice the copy process and I could forget about it, is there any way to manage IO priorities on Windows?

• Windows Server 2008 Alerting to Low memory

  I have a file and print server running on Windows 2008 R2 fully patched in a VSphere environment (ESXi 5.1 fully updated). Every evening between 19:20 and 19:30 our monitoring software reported that the available memory is 1% and performance is dire. There is nothing in the event logs to point to an issue. At this point in the evening I am general the only user on the system to check to see why these alerts are going off. Things I have done; Checked to see if any backups are running – None at all. Checked Scheduled tasks – None before or during this time period. Moved the VM to another host. AV is disabled to rule out that as the issue. The server does not have any problems during the day with memory when fully loaded with about 50 users. The server did have 4GB ram provisioned but I have increased this to 5Gb. Running PrefMon at the time (I will save the graphs tonight) There very little CPU usage at the time but RAM usage goes up.

  I have a problem with the Windows Server 2008 guest (hvm). I can't get a network interface running for him. I also have a Debian guest and it's working ok, but I can't do it with the Win2k8 guest. • SMTP Server setting on Windows 2008 R2

  I am very very new to this and just trying to configure SMTP virtual server. I have followed a few threads to get it all running, but the mails are not being delivered. What I have done so far - 1) Install SMTP server. 2) SMTP server Properties General Tab - IP address is set to 'All Unassigned'. Access Tab - Authentication is anonymous access. Everything else is left to Default settings. Delivery Tab - Outbound security is anonymous access. In Advance section, entered the domain name in the FQDN field, and localhost in Smart host field. 3) Created an Inbound Rule for SMTP service to allow connections to Port 25. When I try to telnet, everything works up until the point the mail has to be send. Now, the sender's domain is different to the receiver's domain. Not sure if settings have to be changed to allow that? I had set the Relay restrictions on SMTP server, but because I couldn't send the mails, I thought I might as well make it work without the relay first. The error I see while sending the mail is 451 Timeout waiting for client input. I used to get some other error before when I had Relay restrictions on. Can anyone please point me in the right direction? Please let me know if you need more information. Thanks.

• Can't add client machine to windows server 2008 domain controller

  A bit of background before I dive into the gritty details: I have a single server running Windows 2003 Server where I host my ASP.net website and SQL Server + Reports. I've been creating ordinary windows user accounts to authenticate my users, and I enabled integrated windows authentication with impersonation. I've set up a bunch of user groups which correspond to certain roles (admin, power user, normal user, etc) and I test membership to enable or disable certain features. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the solution, it was quick to setup and I don't have to worry about messing around storing passwords and whatnot. Well, what I'm trying to do now is set up a new environment with 3 servers (Web, SQL, Reports) and I'd like these three servers to share common user accounts. I understand that I could add these three machines to a domain, which means installing Active Directory on one of the machines. I am barking up the wrong tree here? Would you suggest an alternative configuration? Assuming that I stick with AD, I have a couple of questions regarding DNS. To be honest, I'd rather not fiddle around with the DNS settings because my ISP already has their own DNS server which works just fine. It would appear however that DNS and AD are intertwined. Firstly, if I am to create a new domain in called mycompany.net, do I actually need to be the registered owner of that domain name and ensure the DNS entry points to the IP address of the machine hosting AD? Secondly, for the two other machines that I am trying to add to the domain, do I need to fiddle with their DNS settings? I've tried setting the preferred DNS Server IP address to that of my newly installed AD, but no luck. At this point, I can't add the two other machines to the domain. Here are some diagnostics that I have run based on a few suggestions I read on forums (sorry they're in French, although I could translate if needed). I ran nltest, which seems to indicate that the client can discover the domain controller. When I run dcdiag, the call to DsGetDcName fails with error 1722, not really sure what that means. • Setup FTP access in Windows Server 2008 Web Edition

  Hey all, i am new at setting up a Windows Server so keep that in mind :o) I have following some tutorials online but all seem to have different settings/icons than i do. All i need to setup is a user and password so that i can ftp into the server from my home computer and upload files into the wwwroot directory. • Non-functioning AutoFilter on Locked Cells in Office 2008 - works in Office 2007

  I'm looking into a problem for someone, who works in a mixed OS environment. She has created an Excel spreadsheet in Office 2007 to act as a directory, with AutoFilter turned on for names, email addresses, departments etc. To make sure no one accidentally edits email addresses (for example), she has protected the work sheet. Accessing this worksheet on a PC running Excel 2007, everything runs as you'd expect. You can filter the sheet by any of the auto-filtered columns, and because the sheet is protected, the data integrity is guaranteed. However, if you access the sheet on a Mac running Excel 2008, you can't filter the columns. What's strange here is that the AutoFilter dropdown arrows do appear in each of the column headers as you would expect. It's just that nothing happens if you click on them. If you select one of the column header cells (say, 'First Name') and check the menu: Data-Filter, you can see that AutoFilter is ticked. As another datapoint, you also seem to be able to apply an Advanced filter to these rows on the protected sheets. Does anyone know why this might be? It seems to be a compatibility issue between Excel 2007/2008 (I know the codebase isn't the same), but I can't find any references to it in documentation or forums anywhere, and it would be good to know if there's a way around this. • Windows Server 2008 R2 DNS Server Intermittently Unresponsive

  Throughout the day out DNS servers (2x Win 2k8 R2 servers) are unable to respond to requests. The requests that fail are all on the .root zone that are either cached or obtained from 1 of 5 DNS servers we forward to before going to root hints. At first I thought the DNS servers we were forwarding to were flaky. So I added some more in. Currently the forwarding list looks like ISP DNS 1 OPEN DNS 1 ISP DNS 2 OPEN DNS 2 ISP DNS 3 I have tried: Turning off root hints. Set record scavenging to 7 days. Using dnscmd /config /EnableEDNSProbes 0 as per this. Packet capture at the DNS server shows that there is a lot of query responses with server failure between lan clients and the local dns server; it does not appear to be forwarding those requests. So maybe a problem with caching? Anyhow, does anything have anything I can try to get this working?

I know general guidelines on query optimizations (using indexes, selecting only needed fields etc.), my question is about SQL Server optimization. Maybe changing some options in configurations or anything else. What guidelines are there for SQL Server Optimization? Thank you. P.S. • Installing ionCube on Windows 2008 64bit

  I've been trying to install ionCube onto my server but have not been having a lot of luck! My server is: Windows 2008 64bit PHP 5.3.14 Thread Safe disabled running as FastCGI In my PHP.ini I have : zend_extension="C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\ext\ioncube_loader_win_5.2.dll" The path is correct. The DLL is from the x86 NONTS VC9 version of ionCube and PHP is using the MSVC9 (Visual C++ 2008) compiler though I have also tried using the x86 NONTS VC6 version of ionCube. I'm not getting any error but I'm also not getting ionCube when using phpinfo(): This program makes use of the Zend Scripting Language Engine: Zend Engine v2.3.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2012 Zend Technologies Apart from the mail application pools I have also set all the applications in the application pool in IIS7 to use 32bit mode. I don't know if FastCGI is running under 64 or 32 bit mode nor how to switch it or whether it would make a difference? I know it can be a problem installing ionCube onto 64bit Windows but I have also come across threads whereby other people have also [somehow] managed to get it working but even though I seem to be doing the same as them I still can't get it working.

  I have this one server that just doesn't want to be on the internet It's a new server, a twinblade, the other twin works, but not this one. It can connect fine to everythign else in the LAN, but cannot go out on the net It can be reached by ICMP requests over the net (the nagios server can probe it, but not ping it for instance), but not TCP Everything seems fine both in firewall and machine, i get no issues.   I have a database which has 90% of read only tables. 10% of the tables has writable data. We need to scale the ASP.NET application.We need to add more users who will not be writing to the database. We are thinking of adding another server and routing the users who need read only access to that server. Is there a way to replicate just some tables to another database server. Since the 90% of data doesnt change, we don't want to setup any full database replication. Please advise.

• Server 2008 Task Scheduler Mapped Drive Access C#

  I'm trying do get Server 2008's Task Scheduler to run a C# console app which backs up data to a mapped backup drive somewhere on FastHosts network. I've written a test app which simply does this Directory.CreateDirectory("Z:\" + DateTime.Now.Ticks.ToString()); i.e. just creates a directory on the root of this Z drive. This works fine when I just run the .exe but when I schedule it in Task Scheduler it says the task has completed with return code 3762507597 - I can't find any info on what this means. I'm running the task with the highest Admin privelages as far as I can see.

  I'm trying to import IIS logs into SQL Server 2008. I get this error below. Error 0xc02020a1: Data Flow Task 1: Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "cs(User-Agent)" returned status value 4 and status text "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page.". (SQL Server Import and Export Wizard) I tried changing the column width of user agent to varchar(8000) and nvarchar(4000) no luck. pls help -Vivek

• SQL Server CE, Visual Studio 2008/2010 RC, and Linq-to-Sql

  I added an .sdf to my project, added a table, added a Linq-to-Sql dmbl, and tried to add the table to the dbml. The result was an error: "The selected object(s) are an unsupported data provider" This happens in both VS 2008 Professional SP1 and 2010 RC Ultimate. I found someone talking about using SQL Metal to generate the file, but I didn't enjoy that 2 years ago, and after a little playing around I recall why. Does anyone know if this is going to be supported in the release version? Should I abandon SQL Server CE and just use SQLite (with DbLinq)? Thanks for any insight.

• windows 2008 task scheduled batch file runs forever

  I currently have the following batch running in windows 2008 task scheduler. mysql --user=bobdb --password=letmein --force --named-commands --local-infile=1 --execute="insert into bobdb.attendees (name) values ('bob');insert into bobdb.attendees (name) values ('rick');" It executes nicely when I run it from a command prompt and it executes when I force it to run and it executes when it is scheduled to run. My issue is when it does run, the task scheduler seems to keep it running until it hits a timeout. Is there a command to tell it when it is finished running in the batch file so it doesn't throw a timeout error? thanks in advance

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 server running on a VM machine. My .NET service is running on this server periodically querying WMI, for example: SELECT ProcessId FROM Win32_Service WHERE ... After a day or two WMIprvse takes up to 500M memory and WMI queries start getting out of memory exceptions. One is running in commit and other in uninstall. Purpose is to add a registry key at install time and remove it at uninstall. It works perfectly on Windows XP but when I change to Windows 7 and run the setup, only the key-adding part works. The key doesn't get deleted at uninstall. But when I take the uninstall exe file out from the setup and run it separately on Windows 7, (not through the setup, by just double-clicking on the exe) it removes the registry entry perfectly. Any idea what the problem is?

  I'm trying to get database mirroring to work on SQL Server 2008 between two computers. I checked connectivity, but here's what I end up with: on the principal machine, the server can connect to the mirror but refuses to set up a mirroring partnership due to it being 'unable to connect' (I checked connectivity, everything works). The weird thing has happened on the mirror. First, the mirror now thinks it's being mirrored. Second, after I delete and recover the mirrored database, it goes into Restoring... mode and just gets stuck there. Any ideas you might have on this are appreciated. Thanks!

• Compiling my own PHP extension on Windows with Visual Studio 2008

  I wrote a PHP extension and it could be compiled and run under linux successfully. But on windows, I met some problems. I did the compiling on windows according to http://blog.slickedit.com/?p=128 with PHP source version 5.2.10, and after the compiling it generated the dll file. But when I tried to use the dll file, it reported me the memory problems when starting Apache(Wamp server). And then I started the debugging process, it seemed that REGISTER_INI_ENTRIES() had problems. Here is the PHP extension source code, http://www.bluefly.cn/xsplit.tar.gz , and it works fine on Linux. But I also want to make it work on Windows. Sorry I am not a pro so that I hope someone can help me. Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance~

  I need to show some information in a graph, the data is held in a SQL Server 2008 table. The graph is expecting 2 columns, one for QuestionNumber and the other for Score. The table containing the data has column names that correspond to the question numbers ie A1, A2, A3, A4, B1, B2, B3, B4, C1, C2. Each question is given a score of 1 to 5. I need to show a graph where the X axis shows A1, A2, A3 etc and the Y axis shows the score. I'm thinking I somehow need to rotate the data to achive this, but I'm not sure how. Maybe a different technique can acheive this rather that a Rotate, so I'm open to any ideas.

• RDP problem with Vista and Windows 7 destination

  I use a server a home to host a bunch of concurrently running Hyper-V VM's with different OS's and software for testing. I have Vista on the laptop, all latest SP's and patches. The server is Server 2008 R2, fully patched. The guests are a mix of XP, Vista, Server 2008 and Windows 7. If I connect to the Win XP or Server 2008 guest using RDP, it is always good. Very quick, no speed issues. If I connect to the Vista or Win 7 guests, the response time is so slow it is unusable. Usually 6 or 8 seconds, and at times it is to long to measure! This happens from both the laptop running Vista, and the server running Server 2008 R2. Does anyone know what the issue is with RDP on Vista and Windows 7 destinations? I did read this: http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/tom-keating/microsoft/remote-desktop-slow-problem-solved.asp and that is not the problem I have applied that change to all PC's.
