  • Nvidia GT218 repository drivers don't work

    I upgraded all packages with sudo apt-get upgrade command on my Ubuntu 10.04 box and I have Ubuntu 12.04 3.2.0-29-generic-pae now. I have two monitors and the following GPU: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT218 [NVS 300] (rev a2) After upgrading to 12.04, I somehow lost my previous setup with one common workspace stretched across two monitors. When Ubuntu starts only one monitor is on. I can see the message on the active monitor: Not optimum mode. Recommended mode: 1680x1050 60Hz I used Nvidia proprietary drivers on 10.04 but now jockey-text --list shows: xorg:nvidia_current - NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (Proprietary, Disabled, Not in use) xorg:nvidia_current_updates - NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (post-release updates) (Proprietary, Enabled, Not in use) When I run sudo nvidia-settings it says You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.' I typed nvidia-xconfig and rebooted, but jockey-text --list says the same after the reboot: Not in use. The same with nvidia-current - Enabled but Not in use. I also tried nvidia-173 but I ended up in tty immediately at startup so I removed it. I used to have some problems with Nvidia proprietary drivers on 10.04, I had to put paths to EDID files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf explicitly, but the resolution was as recommended and both monitors were working. If I understand correctly, nouveau drivers are used now by default because the resolution is still quite high, definitely not 800x600, xrandr showed: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 320 x 400, current 1600 x 1200, maximum 1600 x 1200 default connected 1600x1200+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1600x1200 66.0* 1280x1024 76.0 1024x768 76.0 800x600 73.0 640x480 73.0 640x400 0.0 320x400 0.0 1680x1050_60.00 (0x4f) 146.2MHz h: width 1680 start 1784 end 1960 total 2240 skew 0 clock 65.3KHz v: height 1050 start 1053 end 1059 total 1089 clock 60.0Hz However, colors seem a bit faded and blurry with nouveau drivers. Mouse cursor is invisible if it's placed inside Firefox window, and only one monitor is working. I like open source and if it's possible I'd prefer to use nouveau drivers but a few things should be fixed. I'm curious why nvidia-current drivers from the repository don't work now. I read it has something to do with the new X11 server in Ubuntu 12.04, is it true? How can I get it back to work?

  • Prevent Amazon EC2 Time zone from reverting back on yum update

    I use an Amazon EC2 server instance that runs a distro called Amazon Linux AMI. (I've read that it is based on CentOS/Red Hat). My specific version is the 2012.09 release. Anyway, I was able to change the time zone about a week ago from the default UTC to America/New_York (which is EST/EDT). The command I used to change it was: ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/New_York /etc/localtime ...thanks to this other Server Fault question. At that point, I was able to run date from the the command line, and it correctly displayed the EDT time. And even after EDT "fell back" to EST this past Sunday, I was pleased to find that running date still produced the correct local time. So that was great. However, after running a yum update yesterday, it seems that my time zone got reverted back to plain 'ol UTC. I even checked the last modified time of /etc/localtime file, and indeed it confirmed that it had been modified around the same time I had updated. Is there any way to prevent this from happening again, or will I be stuck resetting the time zone every time I do a yum update?

    I was trying to set PATH in etc/environment file, but after adding the desired path the $PATH is showing an error in terminal: bash: /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/games: No such file or directory Here's the content of environment file: PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/games:/home/monty/google_appengine" I was trying to add the path to the folder google_appengine to the PATH as mentioned in this Answer, but it doesn't seem to work.

  • Headphones don't work on an Acer Aspire 5920g

    All the problems I read about were all about the sound not working when they plugged the headphones in. I have the problem that my mic will work but the sound is still played on my built-in speakers. When I look at the sound settings, it doesn't give me any options for headphones. I run 12.04 and never had this problem in Windows. I run it on a Acer Aspire 5920g. Any tips or ideas will be very helpful.

  • An "Invoke Update Manager to update everything and shutdown" script after idle for x minutes?

    I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on a machine for my parents. The thing is they never request updates from Update Manager even the manager itself prompted them so. Moreover, when they are done with whatever they are doing on Ubuntu, they always leave the computer on. And I always have to come back and shut the machine down. Sometimes, the computer even sit idle for hours. So I want to know whether this is possible in Ubuntu. I am thinking of a script that will be activated after the machine is idle for x minutes. When x minutes have elapsed, Update Manager will automatically update everything listed. (I recall that you need the admin password for this, so is there a workaround?) After all the updates are done, the machine will automatically shutdown. Is this possible?

    So I have a Raspberry PI, with an 1TB external USB HD plugged into it. I have Debian Wheezy installed to which I added the NetaTalk package. Following this guide which is on Ubuntu, but was easy enough to understand - http://kremalicious.com/ubuntu-as-mac-file-server-and-time-machine-volume/ I was even able to change the icon to look like an X-Serve :-) Next step to add a second HD that will backup my Windows 8 laptop as well.

  • Can I get a C++ Compiler to instantiate objects at compile time

    I am writing some code that has a very large number of reasonably simple objects and I would like them the be created at compile time. I would think that a compiler would be able to do this, but I have not been able to figure out how.   • url changed to www...how much time google take to reindex

    its been about a week i have changed my url from non www to www version it was done by my host provider .....now i want to ask how much time does google take to remove my sitename.com from indexing and replace it with www.sitename.com (site redirection has been already done by host provider )as it is still showing old ones my new urls are indexed but my main url www.sitename.com is not indexed...or so do i have to remove those old urls personally...its been already about 5-6 days?????

  • SPC 300nc webcam doesn't work on 64-bit Ubuntu 11.10

    It seems that this solution to webcam problems in Ubuntu 11.10 doesn't work in the 64 bit version. If i run the following command: "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype" all i get is: "ld.so: object '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored." and if i try: "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype" I get the same problem :( Does anyone have a solution?

  • How to reduce bubble-notification time in empathy?

    empathy shows a bubble notification message on top right corner if a user comes online or goes offline (obviously we can change them from the preferences), but is there any way we can reduce the time for which the bubble notification remains on screen. By default it remains fro 3-4 seconds, is there any way we can change it to 1 or may be 2 seconds (I know the matter is of few seconds only but 4 seconds looks too long and I want to reduce it).   • JCP.next.3: time to get to work

    As I've previously reported in this blog, we planned three JSRs to improve the JCP’s processes and to meet our members’ expectations for change. The first - JCP.next.1, or more formally JSR 348: Towards a new version of the Java Community Process - was completed in October 2011. This focused on a small number of simple but important changes to make our process more transparent and to enable broader participation. We're already seeing the benefits of these changes as new and existing JSRs adopt the new requirements. However, because we wanted to complete this JSR quickly we deliberately postponed a number of more complex items, including everything that would require modifying the JSPA (the legal agreement that members sign when they join the organization) to a follow-on JSR. The second JSR (JSR 355: JCP Executive Committee Merge) is in progress now and will complete later this year. This JSR is even simpler than the first, and is focused solely on merging the two Executive Committees into one for greater efficiency and to encourage synergies between the Java ME and Java SE platforms. Continuing the momentum to move Java and the JCP forward we have just filed the third JSR (JCP.next.3) as JSR 358: A major revision of the Java Community Process. This JSR will modify the JSPA as well as the Process Document, and will tackle a large number of complex issues, many of them postponed from JSR 348. For these reasons we expect to spend a considerable amount of time working on it - at least a year, and probably more. The current version of the JSPA was created back in 2002, although some minor changes were introduced in 2005. Since then the organization and the environment in which we operate have changed significantly, and it is now time to revise our processes to ensure that they meet our current needs. We have a long list of topics to be considered, including the role of independent implementations (those not derived from the Reference Implementation), licensing and open source, ensuring that our new transparency requirements are implemented correctly, compatibility policy and TCKs, the role of individual members, patent policy, and IP flow. The Expert Group for JSR 358, as with all process-change JSRs, consists of all members of the Executive Committees. Even though the JSR has just been filed we started discussions on the various topics several months ago (see the EC's meeting minutes for details) and our EC members - including the new members who joined within the last year or two - are actively engaged. Now it's your opportunity to get involved. As required by version 2.8 of our Process (introduced with JSR 348) we will conduct all our business in the open. We have a public java.net project where you can follow and participate in our work. All of our deliberations will be copied to a public Observer mailing list, we'll track our issues on a public Issue Tracker, and all our documents (meeting agendas and minutes, task lists, working drafts) will be published in our Document Archive.   • Where does ntpdate get its settings from and what is the "no servers can be used" error about?

    When I run ntpdate on its own, I get the following output: 8 Jun 15:47:46 ntpdate[31251]: no servers can be used, exiting If I run it with the -q ntp.ubuntu.com switch, it seems to query just fine. I have been hunting through many files and the most relevant one I have found is /etc/default/ntpdate, however, even with NTPDATE_USE_CONF set to no, I just can't understand/see how this error is occurring Any ideas? Update-- been looking non stop... It appears that ntupdate-debianworks fine and is the actual command that makes use of /etc/default/ntupdate, but, this doesn't answer the main question and I still can't find it...

    As there are still bloggers who use CopySourceAsHtml add-on for Visual Studio to get syntax highlighted code to their blog posts and there is no guidance in CSAH site how to make it work with Visual Studio 2010 I will give my guidance here. Almost all code in this blog is syntax highlighted by this add-on (read more from my post Visual Studio add-in: CopySourceAsHTML). Last version of CSAH is available for VS2008 but it is easy to make it work with VS2010. Just follow these steps. Close VS2010 if it is opened. Goto folder MyDocuments\Visual Studio 2010. Move to AddIns subfolder (create it if there is no such subfolder). Create file called CopySourceAsHtml.AddIn and open it in text editor.
