• Yii: Multi-language website - best practices.

  Hi, I find Yii great framework, and the example website created with yiic shell is a good point to start... however it doesn't cover the topic of multi-language websites, unfortunately. The docs covers the topic of translating short messages, but not keeping the multi-lingual content ... I'm about to start working on a website which needs to be in at least two languages, and I'm wondering what is the best way to keep content for that ... The problem is that the content is mixed extensively with common elements (like embedded video files). I need to avoid duplicating those commons ... so far I used to have an array of arrays containing texts (usually no more than 1-2 short paragraphs), then the view file was just rendering the text from an array. Now I'd like to avoid keeping it in arrays (which requires some attention when putting double quotations " " and is inconvenient in general...). So, what is the best way to keep those short paragraphs? Should I keep them in DB like (id | msg_id | language | content ) and then select them by msg_id & language? That still requires me to create some msg_id's and embed them into view file ... Is there any recommended paradigm for which Yii has some solutions? Thanks, m.

SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS is calculating how many rows are there and will be using for pagination, so it counts total records, even tho only 20 is showing. DISTINCT will stop the repeated row to display. username is from user table. album, album_permission. its checking if album is private and if it is, then check if user has permission, by user_id. i think rest is easy to understand, but if you need to know more about it, then please ask. im really frustrated by this query and site is very slow or not opening sometimes cause of this query. please help

Should I be trapping the mousemove event in some other way? Edit: It appears as thought the mousemove() event isn't binding for earlier elements than the one currently being dragged (should be bound upon their mouseover).

• Suggestions for entering mobile development -- pure iPhone SDK, Android SDK, Mono Touch or Titanium

  I am entering mobile development. I have been working primarily in .NET since 1.0 came out in beta. Before that, I was mostly a C++ and Delphi guy and still dabble in C++ from time to time. I do web apps quite a bit so I am reasonably proficient with Javascript, JQuery and CSS. I have also done a few Java applications. I started web programming with CGI and live mostly in the ASP.NET MVC world these days. I am trying to decide on which platform/OS and tool to select. I am concerned with the size of the market available for my applications as well as the marketibility of the skills I will pick up. The apps I have in mind would work on both phones and pads. Some aspects of what I have in mind will play better on the bigger screens that will be available on pads. Here are the options I am considering: Apple iPhone/iPad using pure Apple SDK (Objective-C) Apple iPhone/iPad using Mono Touch (C#) Android using pure Android SDK (Java) Multiple platforms using something like Titanium to generate native apps from web technologies (HTML, CSS and Javascript) Multiple platforms using HTML5 web applications that run in the browser (HTML, CSS and Javascript). Which option would you choose? Do you have a different suggestion? What are the pros and cons?

• How can I use Convert.ChangeType to convert string into numerics with group separator?

  Hello, I want to make a generic string to numeric converter, and provide it as a string extension, so I wrote the following code: public static bool TryParse<T>( this string text, out T result, IFormatProvider formatProvider ) where T : struct try { result = (T)Convert.ChangeType( text, typeof( T ), formatProvider ); return true; } catch(... I call it like this: int value; var ok = "123".TryParse(out value, NumberFormatInfo.CurrentInfo) It works fine until I want to use a group separator: As I live in France, where the thousand separator is a space and the decimal separator is a comma, the string "1 234 567,89" should be equals to 1234567.89 (in Invariant culture). But, the function crashes! When a try to perform a non generic conversion, like double.Parse(...), I can use an overload which accepts a NumberStyles parameter. I specify NumberStyles.Number and this time it works! So, the questions are : Why the parsing does not respect my NumberFormatInfo (where the NumberGroupSeparator is well specified to a space, as I specified in my OS) How could I make work the generic version with Convert.ChangeTime, as it has no overload wich accepts a NumberStyles parameter ?

• LINQ to SQL : Too much CPU Usage: What happens when there are multiple users.

  I am using LINQ to SQL and seeing my CPU Usage sky rocketting. See below screenshot. I have three questions What can I do to reduce this CPU Usage. I have done profiling and basically removed everything. Will making every LINQ to SQL statement into a compiled query help? I also find that even with compiled queries simple statements like ByID() can take 3 milliseconds on a server with 3.25GB RAM 3.17GHz - this will just become slower on a less powerful computer. Or will the compiled query get faster the more it is used? The CPU Usage (on the local server goes to 12-15%) for a single user will this multiply with the number of users accessing the server - when the application is put on a live server. i.e. 2 users at a time will mean 15*2 = 30% CPU Usage. If this is the case is my application limited to maximum 4-5 users at a time then. Or doesnt LINQ to SQL .net share some CPU usage.

A submission can be made "votable". I get the number of votes a nominated submission may have using the following query: var withVoteCount = submissions .Select(s => new {NumberOfVotes = s.Votes.Count(), Submission = s}); I would like to sort this new query by NumberOfVotes using my "general" sorter class, but run into the problem that the anonymous type/member does not seem to live outside the repository-method, hence I am unable to sort on it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

• Parsing XML with the PHP XMLReader

  Hi Guys, I am writing program that reads in some XML from the $_POST variable and then parses using the PHP XMLReader and the data extracted input into a database. I am using the XMLReader as the XML supplied will more than likely be too big to place into memory. However I am having some issues, my XML and basic code as are follows: '<?xml version="1.0"?> <data_root> <data> <info>value</info> </data> <action>value</action> </data_root>' $request = $_REQUEST['xml']; $reader = new XMLReader(); $reader->XML($request); while($reader->read()){ //processing code } $reader->close() My problem is that the code will work perfectly if the XML being passed does not have the <?xml version="1.0"?> line, but if i include it, and it will be included when the application goes into a live production environment, the $reader->read() code for the while loop does not work and the XML is not parsed within the while loop. Has anyone seen similar behaviour before or knows why this could be happening? Thanks in advance.

• Putting a MovieMaterial behind a DAE model in Papervision3D

  Hi, I'm doing a project using FLARManager augmented reality and the Papervision3D library. Unfortunately, Papervision is giving me a lot of problems. My scene3D contains a DAE model and a plane. The plane has a MovieMaterial and is playing a video through FLVPlayback. The DAE and the plane are both inside the same DisplayObject3D container. FLARManager transforms the container so that everything appears through the angle of the marker. My DAE model is a TV, the screen of the TV is transparent. I want to have my Plane inside of my DAE model, so that the Movie playing on the plane material appears to be what is playing on the TV. The problem is that, even if the plane has a lower Z index then the TV, it always appears in front of the TV. How do I have my plane and its MovieMaterial appear behind the TV, so that some of its corners are cut out by the TV and the part of the TV thats transparent let me see the Movie? If its impossible, anyone has an idea of how I could get the desired effect of having a movie play on the screen of my DAE tv model? Thank You.

• Why does Facebook iOS dialog for feed publish disappear after login?

  I'm trying to use the Facebook iOS "feed" dialog call to allow my app's user to share something on their Facebook wall. When the facebook app is not installed, it attempts to let them authenticate within the app (presumably using a web view). The issue is that this dialog just disappears once they authenticate. I was expecting the web view to return to the "feed" sharing view. How do I detect that they authenticated so that I can re-open the feed dialog? I've added fbDidLogin to my app delegate, but it's not being called. (I wasn't sure if this would normally be called or not, but I read several people recommending this.) • Crosstab/Cube/Pivot Components for Delphi

  I'm looking for a Delphi VCL crosstab/cube/pivotcube/olap grid component for Delphi 2009, 2010, or XE. I'm willing to sacrifice advanced features to get something open/free (or very cheap if I must) to make it easier to collaborate with any future developers without anyone having to purchase more components than I already use, since this will just be used in one screen. If there isn't anything appropriate out there, I may try to implement something simple on my own. I can live with some fairly basic features: drag and drop to configure dimensions, sort by a column, allow totals/min/max for a column, and (optionally) expand/collapse or drill down to sub-categories. Blazing performance and enterprise scalability are not required, since there should be less than 2000 source rows. There appear to be several decent options in the commercial space (ExpressPivotCube, FastCube, HierCube), but they are all a few hundred dollars. This project already uses existing installations of Excel 2007 and SQL Server 2005/2008, so I might consider leveraging those, though I'd prefer a native Delphi component, if possible. There are also the very old Decision Cube components included in Delphi's Source\xtab directory, but they apparently no longer support unicode compilers (Delphi 2009+), since I got dozens of unicode-related compilation errors while test compiling that source in Delphi XE. Those components also still link to the long-deprecated BDE! Has anyone modified Decision Cube to support unicode/pure-TDataSet? The online tutorials I found were incomplete and silent on the dozens of BDE/unicode compilation errors I see, so I might have to tackle that on my own. Does anyone have suggestions where to start for a free/cheap basic crosstab/pivot grid component?

• Are there any decent free JAVA data plotting libraries out there?

  On a recent JAVA project, we needed a free JAVA based real-time data plotting utility. After much searching, we found this tool called the Scientific Graphics Toolkit or SGT from NOAA. It seemed pretty robust, but we found out that it wasn't terribly configurable. Or at least not configurable enough to meet our needs. We ended up digging very deeply into the JAVA code and reverse engineering the code and changing it all around to make the plot tool look and act the way we wanted it to look and act. Of course, this killed any chance for future upgrades from NOAA. So what free or cheap JAVA based data plotting tools or libraries do you use? Followup: Thanks for the JFreeChart suggestions. I checked out their website and it looks like a very nice data charting and plotting utility. I should have made it clear in my original question that I was looking specifically to plot real-time data. I corrected my question above to make that point clear. It appears that JFreeChart support for live data is marginal at best, though. Any other suggestions out there?

  So we're writing a full-text search framework MongoDb. MongoDB is pretty much javascript-native, so we wrote the javascript library first, and it works. Now I'm trying to write a python framework for it, which will be partially in python, but partially use those same stored javascript functions - the javascript functions are an intrinsic part of the library. On the other hand, the javascript framework does not depend on python. since they are pretty intertwined it seems like it's worthwhile keeping them in the same repository. I'm trying to work out a way of structuring the whole project to give the javascript and python frameworks equal status (maybe a ruby driver or whatever in the future?), but still allow the python library to install nicely. Currently it looks like this: (simplified a little) javascript/jstest/test1.js javascript/mongo-fulltext/search.js javascript/mongo-fulltext/util.js python/docs/indext.rst python/tests/search_test.py python/tests/__init__.py python/mongofulltextsearch/__init__.py python/mongofulltextsearch/mongo_search.py python/mongofulltextsearch/util.py python/setup.py I've skipped out a few files for simplicity, but you get the general idea; it' a pretty much standard python project... except that it depends critcally ona whole bunch of javascript which is stored in a sibling directory tree. What's the preferred setup for dealing with this kind of thing when it comes to setuptools? I can work out how to use package_data etc to install data files that live inside my python project as per the setuptools docs. The problem is if i want to use setuptools to install stuff, including the javascript files from outside the python code tree, and then also access them in a consistent way when I'm developing the python code and when it is easy_installed to someone's site. Is that supported behaviour for setuptools? Should i be using paver or distutils2 or Distribute or something? (basic distutils is not an option; the whole reason I'm doing this is to enable requirements tracking) How should i be reading the contents of those files into python scripts?

• Internet Explorer 7 Bugs - incorrect display OR dead links

  Hi, I recently launched a website I have been developing over the past year - http://Live.heritageartpapers.co.uk/. My dad, who owns the company, had a phone call today saying it doesnt display properly in IE7. Bug #1: The header and footer are both in a div, whereas the content is in a table between the two divs. Reportedly the content (table) sometimes (not always, according to IETester) displays below the footer, but the footer still displays where it is supposed to (ie there is a massive gap where the content should fit). Bug #2: When the content does display in the correct place, all the links on the page are dead - click on them and nothing happens. As you can see if you view it in Firefox (the version I am using is 3.6), the links in the left hand menu turn orange on mouseover. However they do not even do this in IE7. Note that they do turn orange and do work if the content is displayed below the footer. I cant see why its happening - according to IETester, the IE7 interpreted source code has all the tags capitalised and many quotes removed (for example for the id attribute on most, if not all, tags) but I doubt this could cause the above bugs, could it? My question is whether anyone has ever seen any of these problems before, and/or has a solution to any of these problems??   I plan to create very simple custom IP-STS for SharePoint foundation 2010 without ADFS server so anyone can integrate Windows Live ID to SharePoint foundation 2010 simply without ADFS, I can't use ADFS server because it could not install on Windows Web Server 2008 (Web Edition), also I found many article use LDAP provider but it does not exists in SharePoint Foundation too (it requires Sharepoint Server Edition). • Large number of simultaneous long-running operations in Qt

  I have some long-running operations that number in the hundreds. At the moment they are each on their own thread. My main goal in using threads is not to speed these operations up. The more important thing in this case is that they appear to run simultaneously. I'm aware of cooperative multitasking and fibers. However, I'm trying to avoid anything that would require touching the code in the operations, e.g. peppering them with things like yieldToScheduler(). I also don't want to prescribe that these routines be stylized to be coded to emit queues of bite-sized task items...I want to treat them as black boxes. For the moment I can live with these downsides: Maximum # of threads tend to be O(1000) Cost per thread is O(1MB) To address the bad cache performance due to context-switches, I did have the idea of a timer which would juggle the priorities such that only idealThreadCount() threads were ever at Normal priority, with all the rest set to Idle. This would let me widen the timeslices, which would mean fewer context switches and still be okay for my purposes. Question #1: Is that a good idea at all? One certain downside is it won't work on Linux (docs say no QThread::setPriority() there). Question #2: Any other ideas or approaches? Is QtConcurrent thinking about this scenario? (Some related reading: how-many-threads-does-it-take-to-make-them-a-bad-choice, many-threads-or-as-few-threads-as-possible, maximum-number-of-threads-per-process-in-linux)

• Problems calling Cufon.Replace from within a function

  Hi, I'm doing a content loader and the content that gets loaded needs some Cufon action. And that doesn't work right now since I only apply Cufon when the initial page loads. And not the newly loaded content. • How to publish an ASP.NET MVC website

  Hello -- I've a site that I'd like to publish to a co-located live server. I'm finding this simple task quite hard. My problems begin with the Web Deploy tool (1.1) giving me a 401 Unauthorized as the adminstrator because port :8172 comes up in the errors and this port is blocked - but the documentation says "The default ListenURL is http://+:80/MsDeployAgentService"! I'm loathe to open another port and I've little patience these days so I thought bu66er it, I'll create a Web Deploy package and import it into IIS on the server over RDP. I notice first that Visual Studio doesn't use a dialog box to gather settings, or use my Publish profiles but seems to use a tab in the project properties, although I think these are ignored when importing the package anyway? I'm now sitting in the import wizard with Application Path and Connection String. I've cleared the conn string as I think this is for some ASP stuff I don't use but when I enter nothing in the Application Path, the wizard barks at me saying that basically I'm a weirdo because most people publish to folders beneath the root site. Now, I want my site to be site.com/Home/About and not site.com/subfolder/Home/About and I think being an MVC routed site that a subfolder will introduce other headaches. Should I go ahead and use the root? Finally, I also want to publish a web service to www.site.com/services/soap which I think IIS can handle. While typing this question, Amazon have delivered my IIS 7 Resource Kit, and I've been scouring the internet but actually I'm getting more confused. • Call webservice from Android using KSoap simply returning "error" string

  I'm trying to use ksoap to call a simple webservice. I followed this video to try to get started. When I call "getResponse()" on the envelope I just get the string "Error". There's no exceptions thrown or any other detail. I've successfully connected to a simple webservice I just setup on my local machine. Could this potentially be related to being behind a proxy server here at work? • Passing a NSArray between classes

  So, my second question based off of this application I'm teaching myself Objective C with. I have a Data Source class, which for now looks mostly like: - (id) init { if (self = [super init]){ listNames = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects: @"Grocery", @"Wedding", @"History class",@"CS Class",@"Robotics",@"Nuclear Sciences", @"Video",@"Library",@"Funeral", nil]; NSLog(@"%@",listNames); } return self; } The .h looks as follows: @interface MainViewDataSource : NSObject { NSArray *listNames; } @property (nonatomic, retain) NSArray *listNames; -(NSArray *)getListNames; So that's where I make it. Now the problem is that when I try to get the array listNames, it returns nothing. The following piece: NSArray* data = [listData listNames]; Is supposed to put the information in listNames in data, but... isn't. Since I'm rather used to JAva, I'm betting this is an Objective C quirk that I don't know how to fix. Which is why I'd be here asking for help. What's the proper way to pass around NSArrays like this?

  I'm in the process of writing a C# wrapper for Dallmeier Common API light (Camera & Surviellance systems) and I've never written a wrapper before, but I have used the Canon EDSDK C# wrapper. So I'm using the Canon wrapper as a guide to writing the Dallmeier wrapper. I'm currently having issues with wrapping a callback. In the API manual it has the following: dlm_connect int(unsigned long uLWindowHandle, const char * strIP, const char* strUser1, const char* strPwd1, const char* strUser2, const char* strPwd2, void (*callback)(void *pParameters, void *pResult, void *pInput), void * pInput) Arguments - ulWindowhandle - handle of the window that is passed to the ViewerSDK to display video and messages there - strUser1/2 - names of the users to log in. If only single user login is used strUser2 is - NULL - strPwd1/2 - passwords of both users. If strUser2 is NULL strPwd2 is ignored. Return This function creates a SessionHandle that has to be passed Callback pParameters will be structured: - unsigned long ulFunctionID - unsigned long ulSocketHandle, //handle to socket of the established connection - unsigned long ulWindowHandle, - int SessionHandle, //session handle of the session created - const char * strIP, - const char* strUser1, - const char* strPwd1, - const char* strUser2, - const char * strPWD2 pResult is a pointer to an integer, representing the result of the operation. Zero on success. Negative values are error codes. So from what I've read on the Net and Stack Overflow - C# uses delegates for the purpose of callbacks.
