  • How to give alternating table rows different background colors using PHP

    - by Sam
I have a table of data that is generated dynamically based on the contents stored in a mysql database. This is how my code looks: <table border="1"> <tr> <th>Name</th> <th>Description</th> <th>URL</th> </tr> <?php $query = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM categories"); while ($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($query)) { $catName = $row['name']; $catDes = $row['description']; $catUrl = $row['url']; echo "<tr class=''>"; echo "<td>$catName</td>"; echo "<td>$catDes</td>"; echo "<td>$catUrl</td>"; echo "</tr>"; } ?> </table> Now if the table was static, then I would just assign each alternating table row one of 2 styles in repeated order: .whiteBackground { background-color: #fff; } .grayBackground { background-color: #ccc; } and that would be the end of that. However since the table rows are dynamically generated, how can I achieve this?

  • How to call functions inside a C dll which take pointers as arguments from C#

    - by AndrejaKo
Hi people, this is my first post here! I'm trying to make a windows forms program using C# which will use a precompiled C library. It will access a smart card and provide output from it. For the library, I have a .dll, .lib and .h and no source. In the .h file there are several structs defined. Most interesting functions of the .dll expect pointers to allocated structs as arguments. I've been calling functions inside the .dll like this: For example function EID_API int WINAPI EidStartup(int nApiVersion); would be called like this [DllImport("CelikApi.dll")]//the name of the .dll public static extern int EidStartup(int nApiVersion); Now my problem is that I can't find equivalent of C's pointers which point to dynamically allocated structures in memory in C#, so I don't know what to pass as argument to functions which take C pointers. I don't have much experience in C#, but to me its use looked as the easiest way of making the program I need. I tried with C++, but Visual Studio 2010 doesn't have IntelliSense for C++/CLR. If you can point me to something better, feel free to do so.

  • Threading.Timer invokes asynchronously many methods

    - by Dimitar
Hi guys! Please help! I call a threading.timer from global.asax which invokes many methods each of which gets data from different services and writes it to files. My question is how do i make the methods to be invoked on a regular basis let's say 5 mins? What i do is: in Global.asax I declare a timer protected void Application_Start() { TimerCallback timerDelegate = new TimerCallback(myMainMethod); Timer mytimer = new Timer(timerDelegate, null, 0, 300000); Application.Add("timer", mytimer); } the declaration of myMainMethod looks like this: public static void myMainMethod(object obj) { MyDelegateType d1 = new MyDelegateType(getandwriteServiceData1); d1.BeginInvoke(null, null); MyDelegateType d2 = new MyDelegateType(getandwriteServiceData2); d2.BeginInvoke(null, null); } this approach works fine but it invokes myMainMethod every 5 mins. What I need is the method to be invoked 5 mins after all the data is retreaved and written to files on the server. How do I do that?

  • What is the space character for the browser?

    - by Hiro Protagonist
    echo "\n\s\s\s\s\s\s" . "<div id='data-load' data-load='" . $load . "'></div>"; \n works for adding a return in...I tried \s logically for space but this does not work. Keep mind, I don't want this rendered in the browser view...but in the source view ( when you click view-source )...I'm trying to put my html in to a readable form. echo "&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp\n" . "<div id='data-path' data-path='" . $path . "'></div>"; This does not work either. I am composing HTML from PHP... echo " \n" . "<div id='data-load' data-load='" . $load . "'></div>"; This does not work either. Actual Code: public static function setUniversals() { $shared_object = new Shared(); if ( $shared_object->getLoadOn() == 1 ) { $load = 'server'; } else { $load = 'client'; } if( getcwd() === '/home/foo/public_html/develop' ) { $path = 'development'; } else { $path = 'production'; } $shared_object = new Shared(); echo "\n"; echo "\n " . "<div id='data-path' data-path='" . $path . "'></div>"; echo "\n " . "<div id='data-load' data-load='" . $load . "'></div>"; }

  • little java help....

    - by jona
Hi I am doing some practice problems and trying to print a diagonal line like the example below. I have writen the program you see below and I honestly dont understand what I am doing wrong. I m a java beginner and I cant see how to find the error. Example ( If you only see a straight line of stars...then imagine it diagonally....from top left to bottom right) * * * * * code: class Diagonal{ public static void main(String args[]) { int row, col; for(row = 1; row < 6; row++) { for(col = 1; col <= row; col++) { if(col==row){ System.out.print("*"); } else{ System.out.print(""); } System.out.println(); } } } } I am trying to learn for loops because they really confuse me. Another practice is to print a similar diagonal line but this time from right to left. I cant do that without getting this right however :( I believe they will be pretty similar? Above my reasining is this: As long as the column # is the same as the row number the print the line or otherwise leave a blank....what's wrong with how i did it? THANK YOU!

  • Inereritance of clousure objects and overriding of methods

    - by bobikk
    I need to extend a class, which is encapsulated in a closure. This base class is following: var PageController = (function(){ // private static variable var _current_view; return function(request, new_view) { ... // priveleged public function, which has access to the _current_view this.execute = function() { alert("PageController::execute"); } } })();` Inheritance is realised using the following function: function extend(subClass, superClass){ var F = function(){ }; F.prototype = superClass.prototype; subClass.prototype = new F(); subClass.prototype.constructor = subClass; subClass.superclass = superClass.prototype; StartController.cache = ''; if (superClass.prototype.constructor == Object.prototype.constructor) { superClass.prototype.constructor = superClass; } } I subclass the PageController: var StartController = function(request){ // calling the constructor of the super class StartController.superclass.constructor.call(this, request, 'start-view'); } // extending the objects extend(StartController, PageController); // overriding the PageController::execute StartController.prototype.execute = function() { alert('StartController::execute'); } Inheritance is working. I can call every PageController's method from StartController's instance. However, method overriding doesn't work: var startCont = new StartController(); startCont.execute(); alerts "PageController::execute". How should I override this method?

  • ASMX schema varies when using WCF Service

    - by Lijo
Hi, I have a client (created using ASMX "Add Web Reference"). The service is WCF. The signature of the methods varies for the client and the Service. I get some unwanted parameteres to the method. Note: I have used IsRequired = true for DataMember. Service: [OperationContract] int GetInt(); Client: proxy.GetInt(out requiredResult, out resultBool); Could you please help me to make the schame non-varying in both WCF clinet and non-WCF cliet? Do we have any best practices for that? using System.ServiceModel; using System.Runtime.Serialization; namespace SimpleLibraryService { [ServiceContract(Namespace = "http://Lijo.Samples")] public interface IElementaryService { [OperationContract] int GetInt(); [OperationContract] int SecondTestInt(); } public class NameDecorator : IElementaryService { [DataMember(IsRequired=true)] int resultIntVal = 1; int firstVal = 1; public int GetInt() { return firstVal; } public int SecondTestInt() { return resultIntVal; } } } Binding = "basicHttpBinding" using NonWCFClient.WebServiceTEST; namespace NonWCFClient { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { NonWCFClient.WebServiceTEST.NameDecorator proxy = new NameDecorator(); int requiredResult =0; bool resultBool = false; proxy.GetInt(out requiredResult, out resultBool); Console.WriteLine("GetInt___"+requiredResult.ToString() +"__" + resultBool.ToString()); int secondResult =0; bool secondBool = false; proxy.SecondTestInt(out secondResult, out secondBool); Console.WriteLine("SecondTestInt___" + secondResult.ToString() + "__" + secondBool.ToString()); Console.ReadLine(); } } } Please help.. Thanks Lijo

  • Compiling code at runtime, loading into current appdomain.

    - by Richard Friend
Hi Im compiling some code at runtime then loading the assembly into the current appdomain, however when i then try to do Type.GetType it cant find the type... Here is how i compile the code... public static Assembly CompileCode(string code) { Microsoft.CSharp.CSharpCodeProvider provider = new CSharpCodeProvider(); ICodeCompiler compiler = provider.CreateCompiler(); CompilerParameters compilerparams = new CompilerParameters(); compilerparams.GenerateExecutable = false; compilerparams.GenerateInMemory = false; foreach (Assembly assembly in AppDomain.CurrentDomain.GetAssemblies()) { try { string location = assembly.Location; if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(location)) { compilerparams.ReferencedAssemblies.Add(location); } } catch (NotSupportedException) { // this happens for dynamic assemblies, so just ignore it. } } CompilerResults results = compiler.CompileAssemblyFromSource(compilerparams, code); if (results.Errors.HasErrors) { StringBuilder errors = new StringBuilder("Compiler Errors :\r\n"); foreach (CompilerError error in results.Errors) { errors.AppendFormat("Line {0},{1}\t: {2}\n", error.Line, error.Column, error.ErrorText); } throw new Exception(errors.ToString()); } else { AppDomain.CurrentDomain.Load(results.CompiledAssembly.GetName()); return results.CompiledAssembly; } } This bit fails after getting the type from the compiled assembly just fine, it does not seem to be able to find it using Type.GetType.... Assembly assem = RuntimeCodeCompiler.CompileCode(code); string typeName = String.Format("Peverel.AppFramework.Web.GenCode.ObjectDataSourceProxy_{0}", safeTypeName); Type t = assem.GetType(typeName); //This works just fine.. Type doesntWork = Type.GetType(t.AssemblyQualifiedName); Type doesntWork2 = Type.GetType(t.Name); ....

  • How to create an instance of object with RTTI in Delphi 2010?

    - by Paul
As we all known, when we call a constructor of a class like this: instance := TSomeClass.Create; The Delphi compiler actually do the following things: Call the static NewInstance method to allocate memory and initialize the memory layout. Call the constructor method to perform the initialization of the class Call the AfterConstruction method It's simple and easy to understand. but I'm not very sure how the compiler handle exceptions in the second and the third step. It seems there are no explicit way to create an instance using a RTTI constructor method in D2010. so I wrote a simple function in the Spring Framework for Delphi to reproduce the process of the creation. class function TActivator.CreateInstance(instanceType: TRttiInstanceType; constructorMethod: TRttiMethod; const arguments: array of TValue): TObject; var classType: TClass; begin TArgument.CheckNotNull(instanceType, 'instanceType'); TArgument.CheckNotNull(constructorMethod, 'constructorMethod'); classType := instanceType.MetaclassType; Result := classType.NewInstance; try constructorMethod.Invoke(Result, arguments); except on Exception do begin if Result is TInterfacedObject then begin Dec(TInterfacedObjectHack(Result).FRefCount); end; Result.Free; raise; end; end; try Result.AfterConstruction; except on Exception do begin Result.Free; raise; end; end; end; I feel it maybe not 100% right. so please show me the way. Thanks!

  • Setting the default stack size on Linux globally for the program

    - by wowus
So I've noticed that the default stack size for threads on linux is 8MB (if I'm wrong, PLEASE correct me), and, incidentally, 1MB on Windows. This is quite bad for my application, as on a 4-core processor that means 64 MB is space is used JUST for threads! The worst part is, I'm never using more than 100kb of stack per thread (I abuse the heap a LOT ;)). My solution right now is to limit the stack size of threads. However, I have no idea how to do this portably. Just for context, I'm using Boost.Thread for my threading needs. I'm okay with a little bit of #ifdef hell, but I'd like to know how to do it easily first. Basically, I want something like this (where windows_* is linked on windows builds, and posix_* is linked under linux builds) // windows_stack_limiter.c int limit_stack_size() { // Windows impl. return 0; } // posix_stack_limiter.c int limit_stack_size() { // Linux impl. return 0; } // stack_limiter.cpp int limit_stack_size(); static volatile int placeholder = limit_stack_size(); How do I flesh out those functions? Or, alternatively, am I just doing this entirely wrong? Remember I have no control over the actual thread creation (no new params to CreateThread on Windows), as I'm using Boost.Thread.

  • WCF client binding configuration in program code

  • Why does TrimStart trims a char more when asked to trim "PRN.NUL" ?

    - by James
Here is the code: namespace TrimTest { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { string ToTrim = "PRN.NUL"; Console.WriteLine(ToTrim); string Trimmed = ToTrim.TrimStart("PRN.".ToCharArray()); Console.WriteLine(Trimmed); ToTrim = "PRN.AUX"; Console.WriteLine(ToTrim); Trimmed = ToTrim.TrimStart("PRN.".ToCharArray()); Console.WriteLine(Trimmed); ToTrim = "AUX.NUL"; Console.WriteLine(ToTrim); Trimmed = ToTrim.TrimStart("AUX.".ToCharArray()); Console.WriteLine(Trimmed); } } } The output is like this: PRN.NUL UL PRN.AUX AUX AUX.NUL NUL As you can see, the TrimStart took out the N from NUL. But it doesn't do that for other strings even if it started with PRN. I tried with .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.0 and the results are same. Are there any explanation on what causes this behavior?

  • How can I tell whether a webpart that has been deployed to a site is a native webpart that ships wit

    - by program247365
I have a SharePoint 2007 MOSS instance, and I'm on a fact-finding mission. There have been multiple developers, developing multiple webparts and deploying them (using VS2005/2008 SharePoint Extensions). I thought maybe I could look at the fields in the "Web Part Gallery" list in my site, and look by "Modified by", but it looks like a developer's name is on some of the out-of-the-box webparts somehow, and on ones I know are custom developed, they say "System Account" - so looking at that field in this list is a no go. I thought then maybe I could look at the "Group" to which each webpart was assigned but it looks like they were arbitrarily assigned to many different groups inconsistently - so using that piece of information is a no go. Here is my code I have for just looping through and getting the names of all the webparts. Is there any property I can access on the list items of webparts that would tell me whether it's a custom developed webpart? Any way to distinguish the custom webparts from the out-of-the-box ones? Is there another way to do this? #region Misc Site Collection Methods public static List<string> GetAllWebParts(string connectedSPInstanceUrl) { List<string> lstWebParts = new List<string>(); try { using (SPSite site = new SPSite(connectedSPInstanceUrl)) { using (SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb()) { SPList list = web.Lists["Web Part Gallery"]; foreach (SPListItem item in list.Items) { lstWebParts.Add(item.Name); } } } } catch (Exception ex) { lstWebParts.Add("Error"); lstWebParts.Add("Message: " + ex.Message); lstWebParts.Add("Inner Exception: " + ex.InnerException.ToString()); lstWebParts.Add("Stack Trace: " + ex.StackTrace); } return lstWebParts; } #endregion

  • Broken console in Maven project using Netbeans

    - by Maciek Sawicki
Hi, I have strange problem with my Neatens+Maven installation. This is the shortest code to reproduce the problem: public class App { public static void main( String[] args ) { // Create a scanner to read from keyboard Scanner scanner = new Scanner (System.in); Scanner s= new Scanner(System.in); String param= s.next(); System.out.println(param); } } When I'm running it as Maven Project inside Netbeans console seems to be broken. It just ignores my input. It's look like infinitive loop in System.out.println(param);. However this project works fine when it's compiled as "Java Aplication" project. It also works O.K. if I build and run it from cmd. System info: Os: Vista IDE: Netbeans 6.8 Maven: apache-maven-2.2.1 //edit Built program (using mavean from Netbeans) works fine. I just can't test it using Net beans. And I think I forgot to ask the question ;). So of course my first question is: how can I fix this problem? And second is: Is it any workaround for this? For example configuring Netbeans to run external commend line app instead of using built in console.

  • Android, phone call audio stream via wlan

    - by moppel
I am planning on developing my specific voip app for android. Here's the scenario: when a phone call occurs I want to hear the person who's calling on my local pc speakers and I want to speak to him via my own pc microphone / headset. So I need to send the audio stream of both me and the person I am talking to via the wlan network. Something like this: ... onCallStateChanged(int state, String phoneNumber){ while(state == PhoneListener.CALL_STATE_OFFHOOK){ //while phone call is happaning //send incoming speech via wlan to pc //receive audiostream from pc microphone and direct it to the phone call } } ... Is this possible with the current Android API? (Actually it should be since voip apps are available in the market) I did some research in the Android API and all I found was the AudioManager which has constant named public static final int STREAM_VOICE_CALL; //The audio stream for phone calls But I don't know how to use it our how it should give me access to the actual audiostreams which I can send via network. How do I manage to do this? The connection would be realised by TCP sockets.

  • Android NDK import-module / code reuse

    - by Graeme
Morning! I've created a small NDK project which allows dynamic serialisation of objects between Java and C++ through JNI. The logic works like this: Bean - JavaCInterface.Java - JavaCInterface.cpp - JavaCInterface.java - Bean The problem is I want to use this functionality in other projects. I separated out the test code from the project and created a "Tester" project. The tester project sends a Java object through to C++ which then echo's it back to the Java layer. I thought linking would be pretty simple - ("Simple" in terms of NDK/JNI is usually a day of frustration) I added the JNIBridge project as a source project and including the following lines to Android.mk: NDK_MODULE_PATH=.../JNIBridge/jni/" JNIBridge/jni/JavaCInterface/Android.mk: ... include $(BUILD_STATIC_LIBRARY) JNITester/jni/Android.mk: ... include $(BUILD_SHARED_LIBRARY) $(call import-module, JavaCInterface) This all works fine. The C++ files which rely on headers from JavaCInterface module work fine. Also the Java classes can happily use interfaces from JNIBridge project. All the linking is happy. Unfortunately JavaCInterface.java which contains the native method calls cannot see the JNI method located in the static library. (Logically they are in the same project but both are imported into the project where you wish to use them through the above mechanism). My current solutions are are follows. I'm hoping someone can suggest something that will preserve the modular nature of what I'm trying to achieve: My current solution would be to include the JavaCInterface cpp files in the calling project like so: LOCAL_SRC_FILES := FunctionTable.cpp $(PATH_TO_SHARED_PROJECT)/JavaCInterface.cpp But I'd rather not do this as it would lead to me needing to update each depending project if I changed the JavaCInterface architecture. I could create a new set of JNI method signatures in each local project which then link to the imported modules. Again, this binds the implementations too tightly.

  • jQuery $.getJSON - How do I parse a flickr.photos.search REST API call?

    - by Chad
Trying to adapt the $.getJSON Flickr example: $.getJSON("http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne?tags=cat&tagmode=any&format=json&jsoncallback=?", function(data){ $.each(data.items, function(i,item){ $("<img/>").attr("src", item.media.m).appendTo("#images"); if ( i == 3 ) return false; }); }); to read from the flickr.photos.search REST API method, but the JSON response is different for this call. Click here to see the JSON response. This is what I've done so far: var url = "http://api.flickr.com/services/rest/?method=flickr.photos.search&api_key=9322c53dde3b36bda33f79c16bb99104&tags=yokota+air+base&safe_search=1&per_page=20"; var src; $.getJSON(url + "&format=json&jsoncallback=?", function(data){ $.each(data.photos, function(i,item){ src = "http://farm"+ item.photo.farm +".static.flickr.com/"+ item.photo.server +"/"+ item.photo.id +"_"+ item.photo.secret +"_m.jpg"; $("<img/>").attr("src", src).appendTo("#images"); if ( i == 3 ) return false; }); }); I guess I'm not building the image src correctly. Couldn't find any documentation on how to build the image src, based on what the JSON response is. How do you parse a flickr.photos.search REST API call?

  • How can I create a "dynamic" WHERE clause?

    - by TheChange
Hello there, First: Thanks! I finished my other project and the big surprise: now everything works as it should :-) Thanks to some helpful thinkers of SO! So here I go with the next project. I'd like to get something like this: SELECT * FROM tablename WHERE field1=content AND field2=content2 ... As you noticed this can be a very long where-clause. tablename is a static property which does not change. field1, field2 , ... (!) and the contents can change. So I need an option to build up a SQL statement in PL/SQL within a recursive function. I dont really know what to search for, so I ask here for links or even a word to search for.. Please dont start to argue about wether the recursive function is really needed or what its disadvanteges - this is not in question ;-) If you could help me to create something like an SQL-String which will later be able to do a successful SELECT this would be very nice! Iam able to go through the recursive function and make a longer string each time, but I cannot make an SQL statement from it.. Oh, one additional thing: I get the fields and contents by a xmlType (xmldom.domdocument etc) I can get the field and the content for example in a clob from the xmltype

  • Third party multipart request in playframework

    - by Brian
I'm making an application to post photos to yfrog and twitpic and I am having a little trouble figuring out how to set the parameters. Here is my code: public static Result index() { HttpClient httpclient = new DefaultHttpClient(); WSRequestHolder holder = WS.url("http://api.twitpic.com/2/upload.json"); holder.setHeader("Authorization", ""); return async(holder.post("").map(new Function<WS.Response, Result>() { public Result apply(WS.Response response) { return ok(response.getBody()); } })); } Now, I don't expect this to actually get an ok response from the server, as I am just testing the responses that I get back from the server, and that is one that says I need to provide the api key. I figured as much, but I'm not sure of the syntax for providing that parameter, as I need to also give the name of the file and the file. I tried setting holder.post("key=somekey"), with the hope that I would get a different error message (like the key you provided is invalid) but I just get the same error. I'm assuming that I probably need to send it in the for of a multipart request, but I am not very experienced with this kind of request and can't find any play documentation on how to create a multipart request, other than in an html form. Any suggestions and help will be much appreciated. And fyi, I do know that there are yfrog and twitpic java classes to handle this kind of stuff, but I want to do it myself, more so for learning how to do this kind of stuff. Thanks in advance!

    I'm getting itermittent data loss when calling .NET [Console]::ReadLine() to read piped input to PowerShell.exe: >ping localhost | powershell -NonInteractive -NoProfile -C "do {$line = [Console]::ReadLine(); ('' + (Get-Date -f 'HH:mm :ss') + $line) | Write-Host; } while ($line -ne $null)" 23:56:45time<1ms 23:56:45 23:56:46time<1ms 23:56:46 23:56:47time<1ms 23:56:47 23:56:47 Normally 'ping localhost' from Vista64 looks like this, so there is a lot of data missing from the output above: Pinging WORLNTEC02.bnysecurities.corp.local [::1] from ::1 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from ::1: time<1ms Reply from ::1: time<1ms Reply from ::1: time<1ms Reply from ::1: time<1ms Ping statistics for ::1: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms But using the same API from C# recieves all the data sent to the process (excluding some newline differences). Code: namespace ConOutTime { class Program { static void Main (string[] args) { string s; while ((s = Console.ReadLine ()) != null) { if (s.Length > 0) // don't write time for empty lines Console.WriteLine("{0:HH:mm:ss} {1}", DateTime.Now, s); } } } } Output: 00:44:30 Pinging WORLNTEC02.bnysecurities.corp.local [::1] from ::1 with 32 bytes of data: 00:44:30 Reply from ::1: time<1ms 00:44:31 Reply from ::1: time<1ms 00:44:32 Reply from ::1: time<1ms 00:44:33 Reply from ::1: time<1ms 00:44:33 Ping statistics for ::1: 00:44:33 Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), 00:44:33 Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: 00:44:33 Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms So, if calling the same API from PowerShell instead of C# many parts of StdIn get 'eaten'. Is the PowerShell host reading string from StdIn even though I didn't use 'PowerShell.exe -Command -'?

  • PHP + MYSQLI: Variable parameter/result binding with prepared statements.

    - by Brian Warshaw
In a project that I'm about to wrap up, I've written and implemented an object-relational mapping solution for PHP. Before the doubters and dreamers cry out "how on earth?", relax -- I haven't found a way to make late static binding work -- I'm just working around it in the best way that I possibly can. Anyway, I'm not currently using prepared statements for querying, because I couldn't come up with a way to pass a variable number of arguments to the bind_params() or bind_result() methods. Why do I need to support a variable number of arguments, you ask? Because the superclass of my models (think of my solution as a hacked-up PHP ActiveRecord wannabe) is where the querying is defined, and so the find() method, for example, doesn't know how many parameters it would need to bind. Now, I've already thought of building an argument list and passing a string to eval(), but I don't like that solution very much -- I'd rather just implement my own security checks and pass on statements. Does anyone have any suggestions (or success stories) about how to get this done? If you can help me solve this first problem, perhaps we can tackle binding the result set (something I suspect will be more difficult, or at least more resource-intensive if it involves an initial query to determine table structure).

  • Wrapper Classes for Backward compatibility in Java

    - by Casebash
There is an interesting article here on maintaing backwards compatibility for Java. In the wrapper class section, I can't actually understand what the wrapper class accomplishes. In the following code from MyApp, WrapNewClass.checkAvailable() could be replaced by Class.forName("NewClass"). static { try { WrapNewClass.checkAvailable(); mNewClassAvailable = true; } catch (Throwable ex) { mNewClassAvailable = false; } } Consider when NewClass is unavailable. In the code where we use the wrapper (see below), all we have done is replace a class that doesn't exist, with one that exists, but which can't be compiled as it uses a class that doesn't exist. public void diddle() { if (mNewClassAvailable) { WrapNewClass.setGlobalDiv(4); WrapNewClass wnc = new WrapNewClass(40); System.out.println("newer API is available - " + wnc.doStuff(10)); }else { System.out.println("newer API not available"); } } Can anyone explain why this makes a difference? I assume it has something to do with how Java compiles code - which I don't know much about.
