• Which OpenGL version is installed?

  I recently tried to lay my hands on OpenGL. Trying to grasp the API, I learned (or was given the advice) that I shouldn't use glBegin and glEnd anymore, since those are deprecated, but should start with OpenGL 3.1, instead. As I didn't know that the version used makes such a difference, I didn't pay much attention as to which version I actually have installed on my computer. And, as far as I can see, there is no glVersion or similar call that I could use to determine that version. I am using MinGW and I found the following lines in c:\MinGW\include\GL\gl.h: /* * Mesa 3-D graphics library * Version: 4.0 [more lines] */ [more lines] #define GL_VERSION_1_1 1 #if !defined(__WIN32__) #define GL_VERSION_1_2 1 #define GL_VERSION_1_3 1 #define GL_ARB_imaging 1 #endif [more lines] #define GL_VERSION 0x1F02 which, to me, indicates, that the installed version is as low as 1.3. Is this the case or how could I verify my suspicion? Also, where would I find a later version if I have 1.3 only?

• Using multiple column layout with HTML 5 and CSS 3

  This is going to be the fourth post in a series of posts regarding HTML 5. You can find the other posts here , here and here.In this post I will provide a hands-on example with HTML 5 and CSS 3 on how to create a page with multiple columns and proper layout.I will show you how to use CSS 3 to create columns much easier than relying on DIV elements and the float CSS rule.I will also show you how to use browser-specific prefix rules (-ms for Internet Explorer and -moz for Firefox ) for browsers that do not fully support CSS 3.In order to be absolutely clear this is not (and could not be) a detailed tutorial on HTML 5. • Lucene numDocs and doqFreq on custom similarity class

  Hi All, im doing an aplication with Lucene (im a noob with it) and im facing some problems. My aplication uses the Lucene 2.4.0 library with a custom similaraty implementation (the jar is imported) In my app im calculating doqFreq and numDocs manually (im adding the values of all indexes and then i calculate a global value in order to use it on every query) and i want to use that values on a custom similarity implementation in order to calculate a new IDF. The problem is that I dont know how to use (or send) the new doqFreq and numDocs values from my app on that new similarty implementation as I dont want to change lucene´s code apart from this extra class. Any suggestions or examples? I read the docs but i dont now how to aproach this :s Thanks

  Hello all, I have some data that I would like to save to a MAT file (version 4 or 5, or any version, for that matter). The catch: I wanted to do this without using matlab libraries, since this code will not necessary run in a machine with matlab. My program uses Java and C++, so any existing library in those languages that achieves this could help me out... I did some research but did not find anything in Java/C++. However, I found that scipy on python achieves this with mio4.py or mio5.py. I thought about implementing this on java or C++, but it seems a bit out of my time schedule. So the question is: is there any libraries in Java or C/C++ that permits saving MAT files without using Matlab libraries? Thanks a lot

• Implementing IPermission

  Hi there, I'm considering writing a custom IPermission implementation but am not clear as to how it should work. I've already implemented IPrincipal and IIdentity. What I would like to accomplish is to be able to check permissions vis a vis the current IPrincipal's authorizations rather than its roles. Generally, authorizations are read/add-delete/update/none for a given type. So I would like to write something like this: [CustomPermission(SecurityAction.Demand, Type = typeof(Foo), MinimumAuthorization = AuthorizationFlags.Read)] public void SomeMethod(){} Is this possible? I've looked over the code at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.security.ipermission.aspx. This shows how to implement the interface, but I don't understand how the above pseudo-code would be able to check against the IPrincipal's authorizations for the type. Any help or resource references would be appreciated. Joni

• Is Linear Tape File System (LTFS) Best For Transportable Storage?

  Those of us in tape storage engineering take a lot of pride in what we do, but understand that tape is the right answer to a storage problem only some of the time. And, unfortunately for a storage medium with such a long history, it has built up a few preconceived notions that are no longer valid. When I hear customers debate whether to implement tape vs. disk, one of the common strikes against tape is its perceived lack of usability. If you could go back a few generations of corporate acquisitions, you would discover that StorageTek engineers recognized this problem and started developing a solution where a tape drive could look just like a memory stick to a user. The goal was to not have to care about where files were on the cartridge, but to simply see the list of files that were on the tape, and click on them to open them up. Eventually, our friends in tape over at IBM built upon our work at StorageTek and Sun Microsystems and released the Linear Tape File System (LTFS) feature for the current LTO5 generation of tape drives as an open specification. LTFS is really a wonderful feature and we’re proud to have taken part in its beginnings and, as you’ll soon read, its future. Today we offer LTFS-Open Edition, which is free for you to use in your in Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.5 environment - not only on your LTO5 drives, but also on your Oracle StorageTek T10000C drives. You can download it free from Oracle and try it out. LTFS does exactly what its forefathers imagined. Now you can see immediately which files are on a cartridge. LTFS does this by splitting a cartridge into two partitions. The first holds all of the necessary metadata to create a directory structure for you to easily view the contents of the cartridge. The second partition holds all of the files themselves. When tape media is loaded onto a drive, a complete file system image is presented to the user. Adding files to a cartridge can be as simple as a drag-and-drop just as you do today on your laptop when transferring files from your hard drive to a thumb drive or with standard POSIX file operations. You may be thinking all of this sounds nice, but asking, “when will I actually use it?” As I mentioned at the beginning, tape is not the right solution all of the time. However, if you ever need to physically move data between locations, tape storage with LTFS should be your most cost-effective and reliable answer. I will give you a few use cases examples of when LTFS can be utilized. Media and Entertainment (M&E), Oil and Gas (O&G), and other industries have a strong need for their storage to be transportable. For example, an O&G company hunting for new oil deposits in remote locations takes very large underground seismic images which need to be shipped back to a central data center. M&E operations conduct similar activities when shooting video for productions. M&E companies also often transfers files to third-parties for editing and other activities. These companies have three highly flawed options for transporting data: electronic transfer, disk storage transport, or tape storage transport. The first option, electronic transfer, is impractical because of the expense of the bandwidth required to transfer multi-terabyte files reliably and efficiently. If there’s one place that has bandwidth, it’s your local post office so many companies revert to physically shipping storage media. Typically, M&E companies rely on transporting disk storage between sites even though it, too, is expensive. Tape storage should be the preferred format because as IDC points out, “Tape is more suitable for physical transportation of large amounts of data as it is less vulnerable to mechanical damage during transportation compared with disk" (See note 1, below). However, tape storage has not been used in the past because of the restrictions created by proprietary formats. A tape may only be readable if both the sender and receiver have the same proprietary application used to write the file. In addition, the workflows may be slowed by the need to read the entire tape cartridge during recall. LTFS solves both of these problems, clearing the way for tape to become the standard platform for transferring large files. LTFS is open and, as long as you’ve downloaded the free reader from our website or that of anyone in the LTO consortium, you can read the data. So if a movie studio ships a scene to a third-party partner to add, for example, sounds effects or a music score, it doesn’t have to care what technology the third-party has. If it’s written back to an LTFS-formatted tape cartridge, it can be read. Some tape vendors like to claim LTFS is a “standard,” but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It’s a specification at this point, not a standard. That said, we’re already seeing application vendors create functionality to write in an LTFS format based on the specification. And it’s my belief that both customers and the tape storage industry will see the most benefit if we all follow the same path. As such, we have volunteered to lead the way in making LTFS a standard first with the Storage Network Industry Association (SNIA), and eventually through to standard bodies such as American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Expect to hear good news soon about our efforts. So, if storage transportability is one of your requirements, I recommend giving LTFS a look. It makes tape much more user-friendly and it’s free, which allows tape to maintain all of its cost advantages over disk! Note 1 - IDC Report. However, is there a library that I can use in a Ruby environment to act as an AMF client: to read AMF data, and deserialize it into a Ruby object? If not, how could I best go about using tools built in other languages? I suppose I could write something in Python or Java or whatever, and call it from Ruby directly via backticks... but I'd first like to ensure that there isn't really any better option. Thanks!

  Hi, i'm currently building a small JIT compiler. For the language I need a runtime library for some special math functions. I think the best would be to compile the lib to bitcode and link it. The compiler should be integrated in a product and as of this, it must work under windows (VC10, 64bit). So is it possible to build the math lib with the mingw llvm-gcc build an link it later with the JITed Code? Or are there any problems regarding the portability of the bitcode build with llvm-gcc under mingw? If there are problems, what solution would you suggest?

BETA versions of scripts must call other BETA scripts and BETA libraries (if exist) or production libraries (if BETA libraries do not exist) The code paths must be the same between BETA and production with the exception of base directory (/usr/code/ vs /usr/code/beta/) I will present how we solved the problem as an answer to this question, but I'd like to know if there's a better way.

  Hi everyone, I'm wonder how I'd code up a ByteBuffer recycling class that can get me a ByteBuffer which is at least as big as the specified length, and which can lock up ByteBuffer objects in use to prevent their use while they are being used by my code. This would prevent re-construction of DirectByteBuffers and such over and over, instead using existing ones. Is there an existing Java library which can do this very effectively? I know Javolution can work with object recycling, but does that extend to the ByteBuffer class in this context with the requirements set out? Cheers, Chris

  I am noticing a surge in memory and the responsible caller as listed in instruments is img_data_lock and responsible library is coregraphics. I have been reading that the issue relates to cached vs not cached image load ? (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/316236/uiimage-imagenamed-vs-uiimage-imagewithdata) Currently my app loads a series of images via "imageNamed:" replacing the "imageNamed:" call with "imageWithContentsOfFile" seems to solve the issue. Has anybody any information about the img_data_lock caller ? Why would someone use "imageNamed" if it takes such a toll on memory ?

  Hi, I'm using flot library to show plot graph. I need to show the legend in a separate div. Quoted from flot api. If you want the legend to appear somewhere else in the DOM, you can specify "container" as a jQuery object/expression to put the legend table into. So i wrote the legend options as below. "legend":{"show":true,"container":"jQuery("#placeholder")"}} Unfortunately it is not showing anything? is this the correct way of writing legend option? One good thing is it not showing default legend. so i guess the problem is with way i wrote the container . Any thoughts? Thanks

  I have a SharePoint 2010 site with a document library for storing Excel files. If someone is editing an Excel file (using stand-alone Excel, not Excel services), everyone else will be forced to open the file read-only until the first person is done editing. Is there a way around this? What I want is to allow two or more people to be able to edit the file at the same time. Also, I don't want people to overwrite each other. Instead, I'd like SharePoint to merge their changes. Is this possible in SharePoint 2010?

• Quick way to create JSF custom component

  I know of two ways of creating custom JSF components: 1. Native JSF way: creating JSF component class, tag, etc. 2. Facelets way: defining component in a xhtml file and then creating appropriate decrption in facelets taglib. Currently I work on a project in which introducing facelets is unfortunately out of the question. On the other hand, creating custom components the standard JSF way seems like a pain in the ass. Is there maybe a third party library that allows creating custom components in the way similar to facelets but doesn't entail the need of using non-standard renderer?

• Pop-up Window was moved but its image still left behind.

  Hi, I'm using VS 2005 and .NET framework 2.0 SP2 to build an application with a datagridview in it. I'm using Microsoft Word 11.0 Object Library to do the spelling checker on one of the field in datagridview. When it detected a spelling and grammar window would pop-up open on top of the datagridview. The problem I got was when I moved the pop-up window to the new location, there's still an image of the pop-up window left behind the previous location. The more I moved the more of those copied image would be created on screen. How I can overcome this problem? Thanks in advance, Andrew

• I'm working on Peano Axioms in Agda and I've hit a bit of a sticking point

  PA6 : ?{m n} -> m = n -> n = m is the axiom I am trying to solve and support, I've tried using a cong (from the core library) but am having troubles with the cong constructor PA6 = cong gets me nowhere, I know for cong I am required to supply a refl for equality and a type, but I'm, not sure what type I'm supposed to supply. Ideas? This is for a small assignment at University, so I'd rather someone demonstrate what I've missed rather than write the acutual answer, but I'd appreciate any degree of support.

• asp.net mvc log4postsharp

  Hi Iam trying to use log4post sharp for logging purposes, As far as Iam aware I have followed the instructions to get this up and running, I have not installed postsharp, rather I got the library files and midified my cs proj file to target those file, I have also tried installing postsharp on my machine. In either case I end up with this error Error 5 The plug-in "Log4PostSharp" required by the type "Log4PostSharp.LogAttribute" was not found. I have tried googling this and it seems there is no trace of this issue anywhere on the web. One difference between my implementation with other examples is that the postsharp dll that they use is PostSharp.public, mine is just PostSharp. I have tried searching for the former dll but cannot find it anywhere, the download only contains PostSharp.dll. I feel this may be the issue as I have followd all the insturctions to the letter to get this up and running. Any Ideas People?

  I am writing a program that convert TM-2 degree to lat/lon on Android, but I can't find formula for that. I do find some example on internet, but most of them are convert with open source library, that I can't use on Android platform. I also find a java class that do convert from UTM to lat lon, but it seems no suitable for TM 2 degreen coordinate system. So my question is: how do I convert TM 2 degree coordinate to lat/lon? Where can I find formula?
