• Why blogger puts BR tags only when content served via RSS feed?

  I have a problem with using my new blog RSS feed. I wrote a post (the first one) with some code examples formatted by SyntaxHighlighter. To paste a code sample I'm switching from WYSIWYG to HTML view and put the code inside pre tag like this (don't worry, h4 tag was opened a line above the screenshot area): The problem is that such pre tag, when later accessed via RSS feed contains br tags instead of new line characters. Below is screenshot of the adequate RSS source code: What's most important when accessed via www, the post html is formatted fine, no brs inside pre. I verified that by downloading the blog post with wget. So I believe this isn't SyntaxHighlighter issue nor any 'new line' formatting on blog post save. This is a real problem as I want aggregate my blog on employers blog and all formatting of code examples is broken because of that. The base question is: how to get rid of those unwanted brs served via RSS? What's strangest friend of mine also uses blogger for such aggregation and he has no such issue. I checked his RSS feed and there are no brs inside pre tags. We also compared settings of our blogs. However we have found no clue. The blog post RSS for the blog (just check source and search for string: pre class="brush) Mentioned friend's blog Last thing: I see content served from RSS is now also html encoded. If I remember well, it wasn't previously.

• Good links somehow being converted to ones with a PHP redirect (not a virus)

  This has happened to links we put on web pages and in emails. We might put www.oursite.org/work/ but when I view source it shows up as webmail.ourhosting.ca/hwebmail/services/go.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.oursite.org%2F%2work%2F This ends up at the webmail login page for our web host. But only some of the people who click the link get the login page; others go directly to the original page we intended. We don't want it to go to the webmail login page, nobody needs to log in to our web site. This occurs for links to pages on our site, but also to links to other sites that we put in emails or in posts. It seems to be browser independent as well as e-mail client independent as we variously have used Firefox and Chrome as well as MS Outlook and Thunderbird. I've tried to resolve the issue with our webhost but they keep telling me they don't support our browser, or our email client (i.e., they don't understand the issue). At the moment, our only option is to try another web host just to get rid of their login. Any ideas about what's going on?

• [linux] preventing access in shared hosting

  Hi Linux Admins I set up a small shared hosting that contains some sites. For each site, there is a user. I mean, for abcd.com, I created abcd.com user and put htdocs for web hosting. I have no idea on how to prevent abcd.com from accessing xyzd.com's data. I have chmoded by changing 0 to others permission, which makes access defined by Apache when I view it with browser. How can I secure access? Thanks.

• Impact of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) on Business and IT Operations

  The impact of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) on business and IT operations varies from company to company. I think more and more companies are starting to view SOA as just another technology that they can incorporate in an existing or new system. One of the driving factors in using SOA is the reduction in maintenance costs and decrease in the time needed to bring products to market. The reductions in costs, and reduced turnaround time can be directly converted in to increased profitability due to less expenditures that are needed in order to maintain or create new systems. My personal perspective on SOA is that it is great for what it is actually intended to do. SOA allows systems to be distributed across networks or even the world while ensuring enterprise processing consistency, data integrity and preventing code duplication. This being said a lot of preparation and work goes into properly designing and implementing an SOA especially if an enterprise wants to take full advantage of its benefits. Even though SOA has recently gotten a lot of hype about its benefits it does not a perfect fit for all situations. At the end of the day SOA is just another tool in my tool belt that I can pull from to create solutions that meet the business’s needs. Based on current industry trends SOA appears to be a very solid technology to use moving forward, especially as more and more companies shift towards cloud based computing. It is important to remember that SOA is one of many technologies that can be used in creating business solutions and I think more time will be spent in the future evaluating if SOA is the right technology for a solution once the initial hype of SOA has calmed down.

• Safari, IIS and optional Client Certificates

  I've a ASP.Net Webapp running on IIS7.5. The Webserver is configured to accept Client Certifcates. Unfortunately Visitors with Safari Browser are unable to view the Page. • Spherical to Cartesian Coordinates

  Well I'm reading the Frank's Luna DirectX10 book and, while I'm trying to understand the first demo, I found something that's not very clear at least for me. In the updateScene method, when I press A, S, W or D, the angles mTheta and mPhi change, but after that, there are three lines of code that I don't understand exactly what they do: // Convert Spherical to Cartesian coordinates: mPhi measured from +y // and mTheta measured counterclockwise from -z. float x = 5.0f*sinf(mPhi)*sinf(mTheta); float z = -5.0f*sinf(mPhi)*cosf(mTheta); float y = 5.0f*cosf(mPhi); I mean, this explains that they do, it says that it converts the spherical coordinates to cartesian coordinates, but, mathematically, why? why the x value is calculated by the product of the sins of both angles? And the z by the product of the sine and cosine? and why the y just uses the cosine? After that, those values (x, y and z) are used to build the view matrix. The book doesn't explain (mathematically) why those values are calculated like that (and I didn't find anything to help me to understand it at the first Part of the book: "Mathematical prerequisites"), so it would be good if someone could explain me what exactly happen in those code lines or just give me a link that helps me to understand the math part. • Using template questions in a technical interview

  I've recently been in an argument with a colleague about technical questions in interviews. As a graduate, I went round lots of companies and noticed they used the same questions. An example is "Can you write a function that determines if a number is prime or not?", 4 years later, I find that particular question is quite common even for a junior developer. I might not be looking at this the correct way, but shouldn't software houses be intelligent enough to think up their own interview questions? I've been to about 16 interviews as a graduate and the same questions came up in about 75% of them. This leads me to believe that many companies are lazy and simply Google: 'Template questions for interviewing software developers' and I look down on that. Question: Is it better to use a set of questions off some template or should software houses strive to be more original and come up with their own interview material? From my point of view, if I failed an interview and went off and looked for good answers to the questions I messed up on, I could fly through the next interview if the questions are the same.

• How do I simplify a 2D game grid for level management while keeping its by-pixel features?

  (I cross-posted this from StackOverflow as this seems to be a more appropriate forum. I've looked around a little here and I did not find an answer, so I hope this is not a recurring question.) This is a question dealing with 2D world design. I am playing around by creating a 2D bird's eye view shooter game, and I am looking to make the game sleek and advanced. I hope to be able to write physics so projectiles have momentum and knock-down properties. I am immediately running into the problem of world design. I need a way to have level files that store everything there is about a game. This is easiest by just having a grid of objects. But there are thin-walls and other objects that don't seem to fit into a traditional cell of a grid. I want to be able to fit all these together so I can streamline level design; so I don't have to put in the exact pixel-specific start and end of a wall. There doesn't seem to be an obvious translation from level file to game without forcing myself into a pacman-life scenario, meaning a scenario where the game feels boxy and discrete. There is a contrast between the smoothly (relatively) moving characters and finite jumps in a grid. I would appreciate an answer that would describe implementation options or point me to resources that do. I would also appreciate references to sites that teach game design. The language I am using is Java (although I would love to use C or C++, but I can never find convenient resources in those languages). Thank you for any answers. • Logical and Physical network topologies

  I'm trying to understand the difference between logical and physical topologies but it's a bit confusing to me. Cisco states these as logical topologies, but from my understanding these should be physical topologies? This is what I understand so far: Physical PtP: desktop directly connected to a desktop Multiaccess: several desktops connected to a medium with access to each other (Cisco Ring image, how should I view this in a live situation?) Ring: several desktops directly connected to each other creating a loop? Logical PtP: two desktops (virtually) connected to each other with intermediairy devices in between MultiAccess: (don't have a clue) Ring: (don't have a clue) Could anyone help me out and perhaps explain the difference a bit more detailed? Online I can't find any useful topics. I am using the Cisco Network Fundamentals book.

• Bluetooth connectivity

  computer: Samsung All in One PC OS: Windows 7 (up-to-date) BT Radio: Broadcom I have Bluetooth speakers I have successfully used with the system in the past. In fact, I had them set as default speakers so audio would transfer when I turned them on. No longer. Now, they show as 'disconnected'. Asking for connection gives no response. Option to set as default is greyed out. Bluetooth view utility gives an error of 10049 when I try to connect (supposedly, the means an invalid device address). I uninstalled the device and re-installed. No help. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

• How do I draw a 2d plane and rotate camara (To be a board) in a 3d XNA game?

  I am trying to create a simple board game, but the 3d part of this is really killing me. From what I can gather I have created a plane, but it never moves even though I turn the camara, but that partially makes sense as I only turn the camara with a 3d model, but in my head that makes 0 sense, in my head if I turn the camara it should affect ALL my models? • IE 9 home page is hijacked by avg

  I definitely know how to change the home page in Internet Explorer (Tools -> Options -> General). The problem is, no matter what I put there, it never changes. Stop/restart Internet Explorer and the old home page is back. I did some research to see if there is a registry key that I could tweak to get the home page to set properly. I changed the start page registry key and refreshed the view and the start page key (without even restarting regedit) was reset back to its original value. Now I'm a little concerned. • Remote X-windows between new RHEL5 and old Solaris 8

  I have a very small lab network with three boxes: a modern x86-based RHEL3 box, an x86-based RHEL5 box, and a 1998-vintage SPARC Ultra5 with Solaris 8. I can use ssh -X to run a program on the RHEL5 box and view the windows on the RHEL3 box. I believe this uses xauth and magic cookies?? I have followed the X-Windows HOWTO to set up xauth on the Solaris box, but so far no dice. I would like to be able to use the X-windows server on the RHEL3 box with a client program on the Solaris box (program running on Solaris host, windows appearing at Linux host). Is there a trick to this, or have I made a mistake following the instructions for setting up xauth and magic cookie?

• Why Can't Computers Off My Network See the Site?

  Have just set up Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc. on my Ubuntu OS, and I was wondering why computers that are not on my network can not see the basic index.html that Apache uses as the default. I set up the static ip address for my computer, and I use 192.168.1.100 for computers to view the simple site. Is there something I am missing that will allow others to access my site? (It is REALLY simple; no graphics, CSS, etc.)

• Weird UIView transforms in Retina iPhone

  I'm having a problem I don't understand. I'm developing an OpenGL app for iOS. Because at some points I want to force the orientation of the view programatically, and Apple for whatever reason doesn't make it easy (or even possible), I'm doing it by hand. I return always NO in shouldAutoRotateToInterfaceOrientation, and when I want to change the orientation (to portrait, for example), I do something like this in the UIView: [self setTransform:CGAffineTransformMake(1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0)]; [self setBounds:CGRectMake(0, 0, 768, 1024)]; This works fine. In order to support Retina devices, I started checking [UIScreen mainScreen].scale, and setting self.contentScaleFactor accordingly. I also modified the code above to account for the new dimensions, like this: [self setTransform:CGAffineTransformMake(1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0)]; [self setBounds:CGRectMake(0, 0, 2*768, 2*1024)]; Same rotation, different size. The weird result with this is that I get a "screen" with the right size, but offsetted half a screen to the bottom and the left. To correct for this, I need to do the following: [self setTransform:CGAffineTransformMake(1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0)]; [self setBounds:CGRectMake(-768, -1024, 2*768 - 768, 2*1024 - 1024)]; This works, but it's ugly, I also need to make similar corrections when I get touch coordinates, and worst of all, I don't understand what's going on or why the above "correction" works. Can anyone shed some light on this issue?

  Two questions please: Where are Google Drive offline docs stored in my computer? which folder ? (*when accessing docs.google.com/offline) I have a text file in my Google Drive. When I click on it, I can view it only (no edit). The only option to edit is to export it to Google Docs, but now I have 2 files: the original text file and the the editable one. So now I have to sync both the regular file AND the version created by Google Docs. Is that the normal behavior?

• Leadership Tip&ndash;Vent Up!

  Leadership is difficult, for many reasons. One of those reasons is that we not only need to keep ourselves motivated when difficult or challenging times come, but we also need to motivate our teams and keep them focussed on the tasks at hand regardless of the mortars being rained down around them. Inexperienced (and experienced) leaders can fall into the “me-too” mentality – that is, the leader sees themselves as part of the team member instead of the leader of the team. Once a leader changes the teams view that he/she is a peer and not the leader, dynamics can change on the team. One of the biggest dangers is that the leader starts sharing frustrations, fears, concerns, etc. with the team that they’re supposed to be leading on to victory. This can destroy a team’s morale and productivity. One simple thing you can do to counter this is remember this rule when it comes to venting: Vent Up! Don’t vent sideways or down, vent up. Vent to the people above you – they’re the ones that tend to have the power to actually change things anyway. You as a leader stay healthy by getting your frustrations and concerns off your chest, your team is still insulated from it, and your superiors are aware of issues that need to be addressed or can coach you through the obstacles. • android shut-down errors / thread problems

Im guessing Something in my surfaceDestroyed(SurfaceHolder holder) is wrong, or maybe Im not ending the tread in the right place. • Can ping/nmap server, nothing else

  I was SSHed into our ubuntu LAMP server , and was just doing a svn update, which hung. I disconnected, and since then, I have not been able to SSH in or view any of our websites (neither from my network or through a remote machine). I would have just assumed the server went down, but I can ping the machine and get really quick responses. Using nmap on the box shows all the normal ports open, so I am confused This server is hosted remotely in a datacenter, do I have any remaining options except contacting them for support? Thanks!

• Is version history really sacred or is it better to rebase?

  I've always agreed with Mercurial's mantra, however, now that Mercurial comes bundled with the rebase extension and it is a popular practice in git, I'm wondering if it could really be regarded as a "bad practice", or at least bad enough to avoid using. In any case, I'm aware of rebasing being dangerous after pushing. OTOH, I see the point of trying to package 5 commits in a single one to make it look niftier (specially at in a production branch), however, personally I think would be better to be able to see partial commits to a feature where some experimentation is done, even if it is not as nifty, but seeing something like "Tried to do it way X but it is not as optimal as Y after all, doing it Z taking Y as base" would IMHO have good value to those studying the codebase and follow the developers train of thought. My very opinionated (as in dumb, visceral, biased) point of view is that programmers like rebase to hide mistakes... and I don't think this is good for the project at all. So my question is: have you really found valuable to have such "organic commits" (i.e. untampered history) in practice?, or conversely, do you prefer to run into nifty well-packed commits and disregard the programmers' experimentation process?; whichever one you chose, why does that work for you? (having other team members to keep history, or alternatively, rebasing it).
