• CSS Differences Between IE and FF

  I hope I'm not breaking any rules by asking a question that pertains to a project I'm working on. If you view my page here and view it in Firefox and again in Internet Explorer, the width of the main content boxes differs. In Firefox, everything aligns perfectly with the advertisement at the top of the page, but in IE, the width of the content boxes seems to fall short by about 20 or so pixels. My question is obvious by now, but what is causing the width in IE to fall short, and what would a simple solution be? If I happen to be breaking the rules by asking a question that is not generic enough to benefit others, then allow me to rephrase it; what would be the best approach to solving visual differences between browsers? Should I use a separate CSS file for IE, or is there a way to define lines in my CSS file that only get rendered by a specific browser? It would be best if someone could provide me with the necessary CSS to align things properly, but I would be more than happy to learn about how to make the CSS dynamic (if that's possible).   I've keep having an exception thrown, on and on. When i try to make a new Sequencer object, i keep getting the javax.sound.midi.MidiUnavailableException: Audio Device Unavailable exception. • Controlling race condition at startup.

  I have some code that I want to have some one time initialisation performed. But this code doesn't have a definite lifecycle, so my logic can be potentially invoked by multiple threads before my initialisation is done. So, I want to basically ensure that my logic code "waits" until initialisation is done. This is my first cut. public class MyClass { private static final AtomicBoolean initialised = new AtomicBoolean(false); public void initialise() { synchronized(initialised) { initStuff(); initialised.getAndSet(true); initialised.notifyAll(); } } public void doStuff() { synchronized(initialised) { if (!initialised.get()) { try { initialised.wait(); } catch (InterruptedException ex) { throw new RuntimeException("Uh oh!", ex); } } } doOtherStuff(); } } I basically want to make sure this is going to do what I think it's going to do -- block doStuff until the initialised is true, and that I'm not missing a race condition where doStuff might get stuck on a Object.wait() that will never arrive. Edit: I have no control over the threads. And I want to be able to control when all of the initialisation is done, which is why doStuff() can't call initialise(). I used an AtomicBoolean as it was a combination of a value holder, and an object I could synchronize. I could have also simply had a "public static final Object lock = new Object();" and a simple boolean flag. AtomicBoolean conveniently gave me both. A Boolean can not be modified. The CountDownLatch is exactly what I was looking for. I also considered using a Sempahore with 0 permits. But the CountDownLatch is perfect for just this task.

• Custom ADO.NET provider to intercept and modify sql queries.

  Our client has an application that stores blobs in database which has now grown enough to impact the performance of SQL Server. To overcome this issue, we are planning to offload all blobs to file system and leave the path of file in a new column in user table. Like if user has a table docs with columns id, name and content (blob); we would ask him to add a new column 'filepath' in this table. Our client is willing to make this change in this database. But when it comes to changing the sql queries to read and write into this table, they are not ready to accep this. Actually, they don't want any change that results in recompilation and deployment. Now we are planning to write a custom ADO.NET provider that will intercept the select queries add a column 'filepath' at the end of the select statement retieve the result set and modify the 'content' column value based on 'filepath' value Is there any use case that you think will certainly fail with this approach? I know this sounds dirty but do we have a better way?

• jQuery: Preventing an event from being attached more than once?

  Essentially, I have an element FOO that I want when clicked to attach a click event to a completely separate set of elements BAR, so that when they're clicked they can revert FOO to its previous content. I only want this event attached once. When FOO is clicked, its content is cached away in $back_up, and a trigger is added on the BAR set so that when clicked they can revert FOO back to its previous state. Is there a clever way to do this? • cfdiv working in FF and Safari but does not show up in IE

  Within a form I have a button that launches a cfwindow, then presents a search screen for the user to make a selection. Once selection is made, the cfwindow closes and the selected content shows in the main page by being bound to a cfdiv. This all works fine in FF but the cfdiv doesn't show at all in IE. In IE, the cfwindow works, the select works, but then no bound page. I have tried setting bindonload and that made no difference (and I need it to be true if there is content that is pulled in via a query when it loads). All I have been able to find so far regarding this issue is setting bindonload to false and putting the cfdiv outside of the form but that's not possible in my current design.   I'm trying to print out debug statements when some third party code changes a variable. • Set .aspx page title to that of an Eval

  I am trying to use an <%# Eval("name") %> to be the title of my page. I can't seem to figure out any solutions online. I have tried the other StackOverflow question but that did now work either. The page is a bio.aspx and on the site it is displayed as bio.aspx?id=123 so the page title needs to vary depending on the ID. I figured I could just use the Eval("name") but no luck yet. I currently am using JavaScript: window.onload = function() { document.title = '<%# Eval("name") %> | Title Line'; } This works, but it still leaves the title tags empty, and it's kind of spammy. • Inserting Row in Table inside Form tag autosubmitting in firefox/chrome

  I have a form that will have dynamic elements inserted with javascript and am experiencing some strange behavior. • How to save errors with the handleError in CakePHP 2.0?

  I have a big problem. Well, I'm trying to save the errors that happen in my web application. For example (only a example), if I make a division by zero, or happens an error in a query or something like that. So, I wanna catch that and save it in the database. But the handleError of CakePHP is static, so I can't use $this-MyModel-saveError(...). • Is it a good practice for a .js file to rely on variables declared in the including html

It can be php, jsp, asp, whatever. The point is - it is dynamic, and hence it can't be part of the .js file (which is static). So, is it OK for the static javascript file to rely on these externally defined configuration variables? (they are mainly configuration, of course). Or is it preferred to make the .js file be served dynamically as well (i.e. make it a .php / .jsp, with the proper Content-Type), and have these values defined in there.

  I want to use an event listener for preventing the onclick statement of a submit button, however, using event.preventDefault() doesn't work as intended. It seems that onclick is being executed before the listener, so event.preventDefault() doesn't work. Is there a way to prevent onclick from being executed?

• CI + Joomla 1.5

  Hi, This is something that I just cooked up with Joomla and CodeIgniter(CI). I Wrote my database intensive application in CodeIgniter and frontend is Joomla. I'm using Jumi(Joomla Extention) so I can include the CI files inside joomla to basically insert the content generated by CI into Joomla articles. Problem is, you can't include CI files directly using JUMI from joomla because CI tends to route the pages so instead of seeing your joomla page with the CI content, you be redirected to the CI page itself. I did a little work around for this : Made an additional page that just basically does cURL to the CI page - gets the data and echos it out. From jumi, I include this cURL page instead. Couple of questions: I've seen at least a few posts that CI + Joomla is difficult to do(link). 1) Do you see any glaring security issues or possible performance issues? 2) Do you know of a better way to implement this? 3) What do you think of this? Do you think this is a good way to do this? There is one component out there that plugs CI with Joomla but it requires you to have a fresh CI install. It allows only one controller & the download link is down as well.

• Copy Word format into Outlook message

  Hi, I have an outlook automation. I would like to use a Word document as template for the message content. Lets say i have some formatted text containing tables, colors, sizes, etc. Now I'd like to copy/paste this content into an Outlook message object.I'm used to the interop stuff, i just have no idea how to copy/paste this correctly. Here is some Sample Code (no cleanup): String path = @"file.docx"; String savePath = @"file.msg"; Word.Application wordApp = new Word.Application(); Word.Document currentDoc = wordApp.Documents.Open(path); Word.Range range = currentDoc.Range(0, m_CurrentDoc.Characters.Count); String wordText = range.Text; oApp = new Outlook.Application(); Outlook.NameSpace ns = oApp.GetNamespace("MAPI"); ns.Logon("MailBox"); Outlook._MailItem oMsg = oApp.CreateItem(Outlook.OlItemType.olMailItem); oMsg.To = "[email protected]"; oMsg.Body = wordtext; oMsg.SaveAs(savePath); Using Outlook/Word 2007, however the word files still mayb in 2000/2003 format (.doc). • Retrieve POST data without knowing exact number of fields

  Hi all! I'm creating an online poll from scratch which will be held in a database. I'm working on getting a system set up so someone can create a new poll. I will be having the user fill out a simple HTML form with the Questions and Answers (there may be several answers). The user will be able to add multiple questions and multiple answers for each question. As the total number of questions and answers will be decided by the user, I need to create some clever PHP to cater for this - however many there are. When dealing with a static number of questions, it's simple. But I'm having trouble thinking of a way to get all the POST data into individual PHP variables so I can process them. I was thinking of using a foreach loop, anyone got any ideas? Sorry for the long winded description! If anyone needs anything clarified, I'd be happy to do so. My problem is that I can't get my head around how to deal with the POST values when I don't know exactly which element of the array will contain what. If things were static with a set number of questions and answers, I'd know $_POST[0] was Question1, etc Thank you! =)

  I'm struggling to get association right on Grails. Let's say I have two domain classes: class Engine { String name int numberOfCylinders = 4 static constraints = { name(blank:false, nullable:false) numberOfCylinders(range:4..8) } } class Car { int year String brand Engine engine = new Engine(name:"Default Engine") static constraints = { engine(nullable:false) brand(blank:false, nullable:false) year(nullable:false) } } The idea is that users can create cars without creating an engine first, and those cars get a default engine. In the CarController I have: def save = { def car = new Car(params) if(!car.hasErrors() && car.save()){ flash.message = "Car saved" redirect(action:index) }else{ render(view:'create', model:[car:car]) } } When trying to save, I get a null value exception on the Car.engine field, so obviously the default engine is not created and saved. I tried to manually create the engine: def save = { def car = new Car(params) car.engine = new Engine(name: "Default Engine") if(!car.hasErrors() && car.save()){ flash.message = "Car saved" redirect(action:index) }else{ render(view:'create', model:[car:car]) } } Didn't work either. Is Grails not able to save associated classes? How could I implement such feature?
