• Using Maven for maintaining product documentation

  We are using Maven for building a Java server-style application. It consists of several modules (in a single Maven "reactor") which can be plugged together to generate a final product (essentially a .jar) with the features enabled that the customer needs. All the internals are documented using JavaDoc and all, but that's not what you can give to the customer to find out how to get the thing running. Currently we have an OpenOffice document which serves as end-user documentation. I'd like to integrate this documentation into the Maven build process where each module's documentation is maintained (hand-edited) together with the Module's sources and the final document can reference the required Module documentation sections, add some friendly foreword and, if possible at all, can reference into the JavaDocs. Ultimately, the document should be output as a PDF. Is there any experience on Maven plugins can help with this? Is DocBook the right tool? Maybe Latex? Or something completely different? A sound "stick with OpenOffice and some text blocks" could be an answer, too.

• Xcode: how to know a header file is actually imported?

  To be specific, I am using RestKit framework. I want to use a framework class category called RKObjectManager+RKTableController in my view controller mainTVC. Here is my #import section in mainTVC.m: // framework headers, which should be enough #import <RestKit/RestKit.h> #import <RestKit/UI.h> // my project headers, not relating to framework #import "MainTVC.h" #import "Photo.h" // Do this to guarantee import does happen. But still got error, see below #import <RestKit/RKObjectManager+RKTableController.h> However, Xcode issue an error: No known class method for selector 'fetchRequest:groupedBy:inContext:' For reference, this method is a class method declared only in category header RKObjectManager+RKTableController.h, but not in 'RKObjectManager.h`. Also, I added -ObjC and -all_load to "other linker flags" in build settings, if that's relevant. I suspect the error is caused by the fact that category header is not actually imported somehow. How can I verify that? Or the error is caused by other reasons that I am not aware of. What am I doing wrong?

• Magento products will not show in category

  I've recently been tasked with the build and deployment of a large Ecommerce site. In the past we've had to use the clients legacy X-cart installation for redevelopment (too far integrated with their existing work flow). We'd heard good things about Magento, so I've set up a test install to get to grips with it. After a couple of initial issues, there is a live development site which displays categories on the default theme. The problem we've hit now is that products don't display..! After a lot more in-depth research into this, all I've been able to discover is that quite a number of developers endorse using other solutions entirely, with the other 50% saying after the steep learning curve the platform is as wonderful as we'd initially been led to believe. Now, my test category is showing, so I know this is configured properly. I've set up three test products and associated them with this (all done following the Magento user guide), checked double checked and thrice checked the products are enabled and visible individually, yet still the front end says the category has no products in it. I've cleared the cache repeatedly, reset everything possible many times in index management - no products show up. I have to make a call tomorrow morning on whether we're going ahead with Magento. If I can't even get it to show products I'm going to have to go with something with a more established track record and more community support available. Can anybody advise what could possibly be wrong here?

• Suggestions for a django db structure

  Hi Say I have the unknown number of questions. For example: Is the sky blue [y/n] What date were your born on [date] What is pi [3.14] What is a large integ [100] Now each of these questions poses a different but very type specific answer (boolean, date, float, int). Natively django can happily deal with these in a model. class SkyModel(models.Model): question = models.CharField("Is the sky blue") answer = models.BooleanField(default=False) class BirthModel(models.Model): question = models.CharField("What date were your born on") answer = models.DateTimeField(default=today) class PiModel(models.Model) question = models.CharField("What is pi") answer = models.FloatField() But this has the obvious problem in that each question has a specific model - so if we need to add a question later I have to change the database. Yuck. So now I want to get fancy - How do a set up a model where by the answer type conversion happens automagically? ANSWER_TYPES = ( ('boolean', 'boolean'), ('date', 'date'), ('float', 'float'), ('int', 'int'), ('char', 'char'), ) class Questions(models.model): question = models.CharField(() answer = models.CharField() answer_type = models.CharField(choices = ANSWER_TYPES) default = models.CharField() So in theory this would do the following: When I build up my views I look at the type of answer and ensure that I only put in that value. But when I want to pull that answer back out it will return the data in the format specified by the answer_type. Example 3.14 comes back out as a float not as a str. How can I perform this sort of automagic transformation? Or can someone suggest a better way to do this? Thanks much!!

  Hi all, i have to build some financial data report, and for making the calculation, there are a lot of 'if then' situations: if it's a large client, subtract 10%, if it's postal code equals '10101', add 10%, if the day is on a saturday, make a difficult calculation etc. so i once read about this kind of example, and what they did was (hope i remember well) create a class with some base info and make it possible to add all kinds of calculationobjects to it. So to put what i remembered in pseudo code Basecalc bc = new baseCalc(); //put the info in the bc so other objects can do their if bc.Add(new Largecustomercalc()); bc.Add(new PostalcodeCalc()); bc.add(new WeekdayCalc()); the the bc would run the Calc() methods of all of the added Calc objects. As i type this i think all the Calc objects must be able to see the Basecalc properties to correctly perform their calculation logic. So all the if's are in the different Calc objects and not ALL in the Basecalc. does this make sense? I was wondering if this is some kind of design pattern?

• Logging in "Java Library Code" libs for Android applications

  I follow the advice to implement Android device (not application!) independent library code for my Android Apps in a seperate "Java Library Code" project. This makes testing easier for me as I can use the standard maven project layout, Spring test support and Continuous Build systems the way I am used to. I do not want to mix this inside my Android App project although this might be possible. I now wonder how to implement logging in this library. As this library will be used on the Android device I would like to go with android.util.Log. I added the followind dependency to my project to get the missing Android packages/classes and dependencies: <dependency> <groupId>com.google.android</groupId> <artifactId>android</artifactId> <version>2.2.1</version> <scope>provided</scope> </dependency> But this library just contains stub method (similar to the android.jar inside the android-sdk), thus using android.util.Log results in java.lang.RuntimeException: Stub! when running my unit tests. How do I implement logging which works on the Android device but does not fail outside (I do not expect it to work, but it must not fail)? • How do I write escape characters verbatim (without escaping) using StreamWriter?

  I'm writing a utility that takes in a .resx file and creates a javascript object containing properties for all the name/value pairs in the .resx file. This is all well and good, until one of the values in the .resx is This dealer accepts electronic orders. /r/nClick to order {0} from this dealer. I'm adding the name/value pairs to the js object like this: streamWriter.Write(string.Format("\n{0} : \"{1}\"", kvp.Key, kvp.Value)); When kvp.Value = "This dealer accepts electronic orders./r/nClick to order {0} from this dealer." This causes StreamWriter.Write() to actually place a newline in between 'orders.' and 'Click', which naturally screws up my javascript output. I've tried different things with @ and without using string.Format, but I've had no luck. Any suggestions? Edit: This application is run during build to get some javascript files deployed later, so at no point is it accessible to / run by anyone but the app developers. So while I obviously need a way to escape characters here, XSS as such is not really a concern.

• Rebuilding old (2010) django project in 2012

  I am trying to make an old Django project run again. After seemingly having solved issues with old sorl.thumbnail versions and deprecated expressions I now get this error when running python manage.py runserver I also tried to copy & paste my old files into a new Django project and get the exactly same error. Maybe someone here has a clue where the problem lies? • jQuery and AJAX?

  I'm making a simple form which has 5 input elements for parts of an address. I use jQuery to build and send an AJAX request to a PHP file on my server. For some reason my jQuery is not properly able to read the values from my input elements. What could be wrong? • How to save XML file before update?

  Right so I have a simple app that consists of a calendar a Set Event button and list box that populates using a DataTemplate in WPF. When I build the app the Events.xml file is like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <events> </events> I add events to xml through code. Final structure of the xml file is the following <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <events> <event Name="Some Name"> <startDate>20.03.2010</startDate> <endDate>29.03.2010</endDate> </event> </event> Now here's my problem. If I update the app and deploy it with Click Once and the app updates it self, I lose the list because the new file is empty. Any workaround this? • Best way to associate data files with particular tests in RSpec / Ruby

  For my RSpec tests I would to automatically associate data files with each test. To clarify, if my tests each require an xml file as input data and then some xpath statements to validate the responses they get back I would like to externalize the xml and xpath as files and have the testing framework easily associate them with the particular test being run by using the unique ID of the test as the file(s) name. I tried to get this behavior but the solution isn't very clean. I wrote a helper method that takes the value of "description" and combines it with FILE to create a unique identifier which is set into a global variable that other utilities can access. The unique identifier is used to associate the data files I need. I have to call this helper method as the first line of every test, which is ugly. If I have an RSpec example that looks like this: describe "Basic functions of this server I'm testing" do it "should give me back a response" do # Sets a global var to: "my_tests_spec.rb_should_give_me_back_a_response" TestHelper::who_am_i __FILE__, description ... end end Is there some better/cleaner/slicker way I can get an unique ID for each test that I could use to associate data files with? • How would a user stay logged in to a REST-based website?

  A year or so ago I asked this question: Can you help me understand this? “Common REST Mistakes: Sessions are irrelevant”. My question was essentially this: Okay, I get that HTTP authentication is done automatically on every message - but how? Is the username/password sent with every request? Doesn't that just increase attack surface area? I feel like I'm missing part of the puzzle. The answers I received made perfect sense in the context of a mobile (iPhone, Android, WP7) app - when talking to a REST service, the app would just send user credentials along with each request. That worked great for me. But now, I would like to better understand how one would secure a REST-like website, like StackOverflow itself or something like Reddit. How would things work if it was a user logged in via a web browser instead of logged in via an iPhone app? What happens when a user logs in? Are the credentials saved in the browser somehow? How would the browser know what credentials to send with subsequent REST requests? What if it's a JavaScript call to a webservice? How would the JavaScript call include user credentials? I'll be quite frank: my understanding of security when it comes to websites is pretty limited. I enjoyed working with REST services from an app perspective, but now I want to try and build a website that is based on REST principles, and I'm finding myself to be pretty lost. • Want to mimic iphone address book search (In terms of interface & interaction)

  Hi, When you do a search in the address book the flow is: 1) Select the search bar 2) The right most transparent a-z index is removed 3) A transparent black window is placed over the current UITableView 4) When you begin typing, a new UITableView is loaded with no data 5) The UITableView is populated with data as you type. 6) If you select an item you are brought to it 7) If you cancel the search you return to the main UITalbeView My first real question is, how do I load a new UITableView when a user begins searching? Is it as easy as popping a new view on the stack? It would then be a seperate .m/.h file with its own implementation? The second question is how do you remove the right most index? Or just that just go away when you render the new (blank) UITableView? I've gotten search working, but mine does it in the same UITableView, which when you start contains like 2K results, is grouped (A results under A Heading, etc) and has a right most index. I'd be happy leaving the results in the table, if I could; 1) Remove the rightmost a-z index 2) Drop the table groupings 3) Tell the view I only have N search results so it will build the scroll bar correctly. • SASS mixin for swapping images / floats on site language (change)

  Currently using SASS on a website build. It is my first project using it, tried a little LESS before and liked it. I made a few basic mixins and variables with LESS, super useful stuff! I am trying to get my head around SASS mixins, and syntax, specifically for swapping images when the page changes to a different language, be that with body ID changing or <html lang="en">. And, swapping floats around if, for example, a website changed to chinese. So a mixin where float left is float left unless language is AR and then it becomes float right. With LESS I think it would be something like: .headerBg() when (@lang = en) {background-image:url(../img/hello.png);} .headerBg() when (@lang = it) {background-image:url(../img/ciao.png);} .header {.headerBg(); width: 200px; height:100px} .floatleft() when (@lang = en) { float: left;} .floatleft() when (@lang = ar) { float: right;} .logo {.floatleft();} Its the syntax I am having problems with combined with a brain melting day.

• Creating sublines on Joomla menu items

  In my toplevel menu items, I would like to make a subline for each item. I don't think it's possible to do by default, byt YooTheme has done it in many of their templates. The menu output look like this <div class="moduletable_menu"> <ul id="mainmenu" class="menu"> <li class="active item1" id="current"> <a href="URL_HIDDEN"> <span>Services</span> </a> </li> </ul> This basically outputs a one line menu item like so: Services What I would like to do is have a menu item like this: Services Service x, Service y, Service z For reference, have a look at the main menu on the YooTheme demo page. The way YooTheme does this, is using two pipes (||) as a linebreak, so in the Joomla backend you type "Services||Service x, Service y, Service z" as the menu title, and then there must be some fancy javascript that breaks this title into two spans, ready to be styled using css. Does anyone know of an easy way to code this? Please note that I am looking to build this feature into a custom template (ie. non-yootheme). Also note that I am not using MooTools, but Jquery instead.

• Why do I get this strange output behavior?

  I have the following program test.cc: #include <iostream> unsigned char bogus1[] = { // Changing # of periods (0x2e) changes output after periods. 0x2e, 0x2e, 0x2e, 0x2e }; unsigned int bogus2 = 1816; // Changing this value changes output. int main() { std::clog << bogus1; } I build it with: g++ -g -c -o test.o test.cc; g++ -static-libgcc -o test test.o Using g++ version 3.4.6 I run it through valgrind and nothing is reported wrong. However the output has two extra control characters and looks like this: .... Thats a control-X and a control-G at the end. If you change the value of bogus2 you get different control characters. If you change the number of periods in the array the issue goes away or changes. I suspect it is a memory corruption bug in the compiler or iostream package. What is going on here?

  Hi, I developed a web-site on ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 platform. And additional I have 2 win services. My task is to build install package. I decided that Visual Studio install projects are not met my requirements. I design my own installer for this project, because I need to resolve many question and problem in install process. My problem: I need to deploy web-site into IIS, but I don't know how to do it easy. I found Microsoft tool as Web Deployment Tool, but I didn't find any documentation. And must I include this tool into my installer for deployment at destination customer? Another side I found SDC Tasks Library and it looks like a solution for me. But I saw many topics where people had problems and because the project was dead anybody couldn't help them. I know it is a long story... My question: how can I deploy the web-site from another program (I know that IIS versions have some differences and it is another headache), set a virtual directory, application pool (very important), a type of authentification and so forth ??? • What OpenGL functions are not GPU accelerated?

  I was shocked when I read this (from the OpenGL wiki): glTranslate, glRotate, glScale Are these hardware accelerated? No, there are no known GPUs that execute this. The driver computes the matrix on the CPU and uploads it to the GPU. All the other matrix operations are done on the CPU as well : glPushMatrix, glPopMatrix, glLoadIdentity, glFrustum, glOrtho. This is the reason why these functions are considered deprecated in GL 3.0. You should have your own math library, build your own matrix, upload your matrix to the shader. For a very, very long time I thought most of the OpenGL functions use the GPU to do computation. I'm not sure if this is a common misconception, but after a while of thinking, this makes sense. Old OpenGL functions (2.x and older) are really not suitable for real-world applications, due to too many state switches. This makes me realise that, possibly, many OpenGL functions do not use the GPU at all. So, the question is: Which OpenGL function calls don't use the GPU? I believe knowing the answer to the above question would help me become a better programmer with OpenGL. Please do share some of your insights.

• How should I manage/declare dependencies between open source C# projects?

  I've got a game (a roguelike to be specific) in C# that I'm in the process of cleaning up to open source. One step I'd like to take is splitting it into three distinct pieces: A simple package of utility classes, things like 2D arrays, vectors, etc. A terminal UI package that gives you a curses-like display. It depends on 1. The actual game, which uses 1 and 2. Right now, these are all separate projects in the same solution, but I'd kind of like to make them completely separate projects (in the "open source project" sense, not the "visual studio project" use of the term) with their own names and repos. I think, at the very least, #1 is generally useful even if you aren't building game, and I don't want someone to have to build an entire game just to get some handy functions. What I'm not sure about is how to handle the dependencies if I split up the solution. If someone decides they want to sync the game, how should I ensure they also get 1 and 2? Include the built dependent .dlls in the games repo? Just document, "you need these other projects and they must be in a path relative to the game like this". Just leave it all one giant solution and a single repo. Something I'm not thinking of?

• How can I abstract out the core functionality of several Rails applications?

  I'd like to develop a number of non-trivial Rails applications which all implement a core set of functionality but each have certain particular customizations, extensions, and aesthetic differences. How can I pull the core functionality (models, controllers, helpers, support classes, tests) common to all these systems out in such a way that updating the core will benefit every application based upon it? I've seen Rails Engines but they seem to be too detached, almost too abstracted to be built upon. I can seem them being useful for adding one component to an existing app, for example bolting on a blog engine to your existing e-commerce site. Since engines seem to be mostly self contained, it seems difficult and inconvenient to override their functionality and views while keeping DRY. I've also considered abstracting the code into a gem, but this seems a little odd. Do I make the gem depend on the Rails gems, and the define models & controllers inside it, and then subclass them in my various applications? Or do I define many modules inside the gem that I include in the different spots inside my various applications? How do I test the gem and then test the set of customizations and overridden functionality on top of it? I'm also concerned with how I'll develop the gem and the Rails apps in tandem, can I vendor a git repository of the gem into the app and push from that so I don't have to build a new gem every iteration? Also, are there private gem hosts/can I set my own gem source up? Also, any general suggestions for this kind of undertaking? Abstraction paradigms to adhere to? Required reading? Comments from the wise who have done this before? Thanks!

• Should a C++ constructor do real work?

  I'm strugging with some advice I have in the back of my mind but for which I can't remember the reasoning. I seem to remember at some point reading some advice (can't remember the source) that C++ constructors should not do real work. Rather, they should initialize variables only. The advice when on to explain that real work should be done in some sort of init() method, to be called separately after the instance was created. The situation is I have a class that represents a hardware device. It makes logical sense to me for the constructor to call the routines that query the device in order to build up the instance variables that describe the device. In other words, once new instantiates the object, the developer receives an object which is ready to be used, no separate call to object-init() required. Is there a good reason why constructors shouldn't do real work? Obviously it could slow allocation time, but that wouldn't be any different if calling a separate method immediately after allocation. Just trying to figure out what gotchas I not currently considering that might have lead to such advice.

Is this a bug in lightcore, or am I doing it wrong? • Glassfish: Storing Java classes in the docroot folder?

  I'm very new to using Glassfish or JSP. I have this working in NetBeans (which has Glassfish bundled) but when I try to put it on my server which is running Glassfish Server, I really don't know what I'm doing. I can place a JSP file in "domains/domain1/docroot/index.jsp" and it will work when I visit my site, but I can't, for some reason, get Java classes to work. I copied the files in "/build/web/" from the NetBeans project to the docroot folder on my server. The errors I get when I visit the site are: org.apache.jasper.JasperException: PWC6033: Error in Javac compilation for JSP PWC6199: Generated servlet error: string:///index_jsp.java:7: package test does not exist PWC6197: An error occurred at line: 5 in the jsp file: /index.jsp PWC6199: Generated servlet error: string:///index_jsp.java:52: cannot find symbol symbol : class TestClass location: class org.apache.jsp.index_jsp PWC6197: An error occurred at line: 5 in the jsp file: /index.jsp PWC6199: Generated servlet error: string:///index_jsp.java:52: cannot find symbol symbol : class TestClass location: class org.apache.jsp.index_jsp The actual Java class is in "WEB-INF/classes/test/TestClass.class" (it is pre-compiled). • Why is this Javascript that writes out a Google Ad not displaying properly on the iPhone?

  I have this Javacsript code that checks to see if there is a DIV named "google-ad", and if there is, it writes in a the necessary code to display the Google Ad. This works great in browsers like Firefox, Chrome, Safari on Mac, and Android. However, when I bundle this code with Adobe's Phonegap Build, and deploy it to iPhones, it behaves strangely. It launches a browser window displaying just the Google Ad alone.
