• access netatalk share on osx permission issue

  I have two users in ubuntu. My first was me and I am the owner of the folder in question. The second is my wife. Netatalk is running and we can both see the folder on the network. However I can access it but she cannot. She gets an error in osx "... you don't have permission to see its contents". I have use chmod 777 on the folder but it made no difference. Any ideas? UPDATE The directory in question is a mounted harddrive at /media/ourPhotos

• Why does my excel document have 960,000 empty rows?

  I have an excel document, Office 2007, on a Windows 7 machine (if that part matters any, I'm not sure but just throwing it out there). It is a list of all employee phone numbers. If I need to generate a new page, I can click on page 2 and the table will automatically generate again. The problem is, someone messed it up since it's on a network drive and now shows I have over 960,000 rows of data, when I really don't! I did CTRL+END to see if any data was in the last cell, so I cleared it out, deleted that row and column, but still didn't fix it. It almost seems like it duplicates itself after the deletion. How can I fix this instead of recreating the entire document?

• Best method(s) to backup VMs running on HyperV?

  We're in the middle of P2V'ing most of the network, so the current backup method is likely the worst - the backup agent is still installed on the guest OSs, and the backup device is dutifully pulling them onto tape, one file at a time. I suspect there's a clever way to script (PowerShell?) a suspend on the VMs, then backup of the .vhd files, and unsuspend the VMs. This seems like it would provide big speed benefits, while losing file-level restore (might be best for things like DCs and app servers). What methods/policies have you hammered out?

• Cannot connect to FTP server from external host

  I have a FTP server (vsftpd) setuped on a Linux box (Ubuntu server). When I try to connect with a computer on the same network everything works fine as expected. But as soon the IP is external it won't connect.. I first assumed the port was blocked, but then: localserver:$ sudo tail -f /var/log/vsftpd.log Wed Jan 13 14:21:17 2010 [pid 2407] CONNECT: Client "xxx.xxx.107.4" remotemachine:$ netcat svn-motion.no-ip.biz 21 220 FTP Server And it hangs there .. Is there any other ports other than 21 that are required to be open ?

• Why is apt-cache so slow?

  After upgrade to Trusty (14.04) from Saucy (13.10), all apt operations are very slow. Even those that do not include downloading anything, or connecting to any servers. For example, displaying the apt policy # time apt-cache policy [...] real 0m8.951s user 0m5.069s sys 0m3.861s takes almost ten seconds! Mostly a weird lag right after issuing the command. And it's the same even if I issue the same command again. On another system it doesn't take a tenth of a second real 0m0.096s user 0m0.070s sys 0m0.023s The other system is a little beefier but there was no noticeable difference before the upgrade. It's the same with apt-get, anything apt-related. How do I find out the source of this lag and fix it? • Best Practices in Preventing Locks in File sharing in Windows?

  We have a web development server, that has our source control on it. That we use via mapped drives to open/edit/save/create files on to it. But I have noticed a lot of weird glitches with either the file lock/sharing/etc For example, if i have a file open on my local pc, and try to check out that file via my source control on dev, it error's out. The source control I use is QCVS by Qumasoft. Or If I use cuteftp to download something to dev, via my local pc, it won't download unless I close that file. So my brain sniff's and figures this is either an issue with folder/network/sharing, or an issue of permissions. Has anyone else had similar issues, and what did they do to fix it permanently? • No internet on some devices, still on WiFi

  Ok, here's the situation. I live with 3 friends, and we often sit in the living room with laptops out. There's a WiFi router in the kitchen, and we have quite a stable connection. The issue, however, is this: sometimes, all of a sudden one of my friends loses internet connection. Even disconnecting/reconnecting to the WiFi network does not help. When we restart the router, though, it works like a charm again. The odd thing is, it happens just for this one Windows 7 laptop. We've switched routers (for a different reason) in the mean time, but the issue remained. This makes me suspect the laptop even more. I realise I've given little details, but I don't really know what to try/do. Any suggestions what it might be?

• Accessing non-port80 web server using IPv6

  In a normal IPv4 network, I can go into any browser such as Firefox and browse a server on a IPv4 address not hosted on port 80: (add http:// - Super user stops "new" users from adding links)192.168.42.6:8080/ This accesses the server on Port 8080 on 192.168.42.6. However, if I try this with a IPv6 IP, I get no luck. This tries to access port 8080 on fe80::520:ff0f:ece0:1 : http://[fe80::520:ff0f:ece0:1]:8080/ Firefox will automatically "fix" this URL to: http://[www.fe80::520:ff0f:ece0:1.com]:8080/ which does not help me access it at all. So either I am doing something really wrong OR there's something really wrong with IPv6. Couldn't find anything that even remotely helped on the Internet. (And yes, there is a server running on the IPv6 in question)

  I have verizon fios internet service. I believe they use a Wireless G router, but I just have one question. I currently am using a 54mbps wireless pci adapter in my Windows 7 custom build. It drops the internet connection all the time and is starting to get very irritating. I'm thinking about buying a new one, but all the 300mbps cards on newegg are wireless n. So my question is, will a wireless n network adapter make a difference with a wireless g router?

• How to troubleshoot slow powerconnect 62xx management interface

  Our Dell Powerconnect 62xx switches have a very high packetloss on the management interface. I presume this is caused by a new appliance which uses multicast for communication but I am not sure. Our network setup is following: servers a - Dell PC6248 | servers b - Dell PC6248 |- juniper core router servers c - Dell PC6248 | What we see is that the multicast traffic arrives at all servers (but only the servers b use the multicast) and I fear that this multicast traffic floods the switch management interface. The switches' management interfaces are reachable via vlan101, all other traffic is sent over other vlans. When I tcpdump on one of the 2 servers with a vlan 101 ip address, I only get a few arp requests but almost nothing. When I try to ping between these 2 servers, it works like a charm. I would like to know what a good way is to troubleshoot this problem and maybe help me understand what is going wrong on that subnet.

• Suggestions for someone wanting to become a Laptop Reseller

  First of all, to give you a little background... I have had my Microsoft A+ for several years now. I used to run a small business repairing Xbox 360 consoles and I am currently a Network Engineer for a company in Ohio. I definitely know my way around a computer. I miss running a small business on the side and I'd like to get something going again. There is a really high demand in my area for Laptops and I was thinking about starting a small Laptop store out of my house. What is the best way to do this? I was assuming that the best way would be to buy barebones systems and build them yourself. If this is the best method, I would be very interested in any resources to get parts and such. Apparently Laptop parts aren't the easiest thing to come by (especially at a good price). Does anyone have any suggestions about how to get something like this going?

  I've been digging around for ages but not getting very far so any links or tips would be massively appreciated. I want to create a central "radio station" in my home to stream one playlist to any computers pointing their browser to the ip within my internal network. I have an old mini slave mac mini running ubuntu and was originally thinking I could get php and apache to handle this but then quickly realised that of course, php will serve out streaming independently per connection ie no radio station. • Lightweight tool for viewing raw HTTP messages?

  Hi, I'm investigating differences in behaviour between a couple of Web servers. I need to see raw response data from the servers (i.e. before the response is de-chunked if it has "Transfer-Encoding:chunked" and before it is decompressed if it has "Content-Encoding:gzip"). I can find plenty of simple HTTP client that nearly do what I need (e.g. Poster, RESTClient), but they tend to decode the response one step too far. Network analysers like Wireshark give me what I need but are a bit heavyweight. Telnet is my best bet so far, but is a bit too simplistic (actions like capturing data or entering requests are a bit laborious). Can anyone recommend a good, lightweight tool for sending / viewing the raw data that constitute HTTP messages? Edit: I should add that I'm on Windows. Also, the tool would need to work both with remote and local servers.

  Is there an easy and quick way I can create a new subdomain on a windows based domain controller. My primary domain controller is also my primary DNS server on my network. • Block a machine from accessing the internet

  After some confirmation that I have thinking right in this scenario. We have a number of wired and wireless machines which presently have direct internet access. I also have a Linux (Ubuntu) server which is used as a file server for the network. Essentially I would like to be able to turn internet access on and off for machines. My plan is to block these machines by MAC address at the router. I would then set up a proxy server on the Linux box (ie Squid) so that the machines I wish to restrict can access the internet via the proxy. As I can adjust access via ACLs in squid, I would be able to switch on or off a machines access to the internet without having to further adjust the router's MAC rules. And of course I could go further and create a few scripts to assist with this admin task. Does this seem sound and have I over looked anything? Any help greatly appreciated. Simon.

• What is the default value for Empty Temporary Internet Files when browser is closed in IE8?

  We have four different machines that all have "Empty Temporary Internet Files when browser is closed" set to true (checked) in IE8's Internet Options (located under the Security section in the Advanced tab). No one remembers checking that checkbox to turn on the setting. What is the default value supposed to be? I'm specifically interested in Windows 7 and Windows XP. I have run rsop.msc on one of the corporate machines—3 of the 4 are members of a corporate network/domain—and see this under User Configuration, which makes the current scenario seem even stranger: The Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) also shows the Configure Delete Browsing History on exit setting to be Not configured (under Computer ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesWindows ComponentsInternet ExplorerDelete Browsing History).

• Two routers, one off-site, same ISP-assigned static IP. A recipe for conflict?

  This is the situation I've inherited: There are two routers, one off-site. Both are connected to the ISP. The ISP assigns both of them the same static IP (or so it seems). Presumably, the network problems we're having are related to the idea that you can't have two instances of the same IP. So we rang up the folk off-site and told them to turn off the router. Now everything's working okay here. How do I get around this? Get another static IP? Figure out how to get the router to ask for a dynamic IP (as we're not using the static IP for anything)?

  The only constant in today’s business environment is change. Businesses that continuously foresee change and adapt quickly will gain market share and increased growth. In our ever growing global business environment change is driven by data in regards to collecting, maintaining, verifying and distributing data.  Companies today are made and broken over data. Would anyone still use Google if they did not have one of the most accurate search indexes on the internet? No, because their value is in their data and the quality of their data. Due to the increasing focus on data, companies have been adopting new methodologies for gaining more control over their data while attempting to reduce the costs of maintaining it. In addition, companies are also trying to reduce the time it takes to analyze data in regards to various market forces to foresee changes prior to them actually occurring.   Benefits of Adopting SOA Services can be maintained separately from other services and applications so that a change in one service will only affect itself and client services or applications. The advent of services allows for system functionality to be distributed across a network or multiple networks. The costs associated with maintain business functionality is much higher in standard application development over SOA due to the fact that one Services can be maintained and shared to other applications instead of multiple instances of business functionality being duplicated via hard coding in to several applications. When multiple applications use a single service for a specific business function then the all of the data being processed will be consistent in terms of quality and accuracy through the applications. Disadvantages of Adopting SOA Increased initial costs and timelines are associated with SOA due to the fact that services need to be created as well as applications need to be modified to call the services In order for an SOA project to be successful the project must obtain company and management support in order to gain the proper exposure, funding, and attention. • VPN ipsec tunnel from router to single windows server computer (gateway-to-host)

  Firstly, is this possible? The situation: 2 different ISP's. One has several servers and a firewall running. The other is limited to only one virtual server with one network card running windows server 2008r2. I need to set up a site-to-site style VPN using IPsec between the firewall of one ISP and the windows host on the other (gateway-to-host). This host has to run a SQL-Server that I can access from the other ISP's servers through the VPN tunnel. It seems looking at the RFC for IPsec that this should be possible using the features of Windows 2008, but I can't get it to work so far... It seems that I can't access any services running on the same computer or IP address used as the tunnel endpoint? Thanks Chris

• why doesn't my computer resume after sleeping overnight?

  i'm having a weird, weird bug that's been haunting me since 11.10. if i listen to music or watch a video and my computer automatically goes to sleep at night, it won't properly resume in the morning. otherwise, suspend and resume works just fine. what happens is that the wi-fi and bluetooth indicator (that turns from white to orange when suspending) stays orange, the display doesn't turn on, and the only option i have is to hard reset the machine. here's what i've tried so far: installing (and uninstalling and reinstalling) laptop-mode-tools switching the proprietary wireless driver (broadcom-wl) to the open source one (brcmsmac & bcma) and back unloading (and blacklisting) all bluetooth modules (rfcomm, btusb, bnep, bluetooth) and stopping (# stop bluetooth) and disabling (# echo 'manual' /etc/init/bluetooth.override) the bluetooth service creating a custom pm sleep action as suggested here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11926504 not watching youtube / any stuff that uses flash before going to sleep (i have flashblock, and i checked $ ps aux | grep flash) because i suspected flash to be the culprit trying out different versions of fglrx (the one from the repos, then installing the latest one from amd's site via generated .deb files, then back to the official ones) none of these worked. i remember back in the days of 10.04, there was a gconf key called network sleep: i thought about disabling that, since re-enabling the wireless card seems to be the problem (according to the indicator led), but the option appears to be missing from gnome 3 (unity-2d, whatever). does anyone have any ideas? thanks, bamdad

• Yahoo toolbar and local sites (e.g. Intranet)

  We have local sites running on IIS in regular MS Windows network. User base has IE, FireFox and Chrome. Local sites are isolated by host headers and DNS record created for the common IP accordingly. This is a regular set-up. Users without Yahoo Toolbar type http://intranet and the sites resolves. Users with Yahoo toolbar type http://intranet and the toolbar goes off to search for this site in public domain. This is irrespective to whether the address is typed into the browser address bar or the toolbar. All versions of toolbar and IE are affected. I cannot see a setting on the toolbar to switch this "irritating" behaviour off and simply un-installing the toolbar is not an option. Any ideas?

• Exchange 2010 user not receiving mail from another user

  I have an Outlook 2010 user who can't receive email from another Outlook 2010 user. They are both in the same mailbox server in the same network. They can both send and receive email to anyone else in the organization. One just can't receive from the other. It's very strange. Exchange server was recently migrated from 2007 to 2010 but one of the users described is a new hire which was created on the 2010 server. I have other new hires created on the 2010 server that work fine. I tried having the user send from OWA and it still doesn't get through. What else can I do to troubleshoot this issue? Thank you.

• ServerName no longer works as SQL Server 2008 Default instance name?

  Folks, Somehow in struggling to install something (Sage MIP), I have unsettled my system's SQL Server 2008 instance names. If I fired up SSMS and connected to "MySystemName" (while logged into MySystemName), I used to immediately connect and could view my databases. Now if I connect to "(local)" or "." I connect just fine...but "MySystemName" gives me a timeout error. If I log in with "." and do "SELECT @@SERVERNAME" it comes back with "MySystemName" just fine. I've double checked that my network name is in the Security\Logins list, and it is, as a dbadmin. Any suggestions? I thought that having SQL Server 2005 Express might be a problem (the "battle of the default instances"), so I uninstalled that. No better.
