  • How force text-only pasting in emacs?

    On my mac I always have an emacs buffer open and occasionally I have to copy content from PowerPoint or Word. Unfortunately, copying to the clipboard and yanking into emacs saves all the ugly formatting (and graphics) from the original document. I only want to paste in the text (and never the formatting). My current solution is to paste into TextWrangler and then repaste into emacs. What's a better way to do this?

    What's the difference between VMWare Player vs Workstation? Is it that Player is for non-commercial use and workstation isn't? For someone who builds and tests applications at home for non-commercial use, is it worth paying for a Workstation license? Do I get any benefits over Player?   • Is it reasonable that a random disk seek & read costs ~16ms?

    I am frustrated about the latency of random reading from a non-ssd disk. Based on results from following test program, it speeds ~16 ms for a random read of just 512 bytes without help of os cache. I tried changing 512 to larger values, such as 25k, and the latency did not increase as much. I guess it is because the disk seek dominates the time.   • How to restore PostgreSQL database from .tar file?

    I have all PostgreSQL databases backed up during incremental backups using WHM, which creates a $dbName.tar file. Data is stored in these .tar files, but I do not know how to restore it back into the individual databases via SSH. In particular the file location. I have been using: pg_restore -d client03 /backup/cpbackup/daily/client03/psql/client03.tar which generates the error 'could not open input file: Permission denied' Any assistance appreciated.

    Here's the scenario: Work network - I have a Mac and a PC - OS X is Snow Leopard - Windows 7 I am trying to connect to the PC from the Mac. IT ONLY works if I turn off the firewall in Windows. I tried to trace the port and connection it was using, it appears to be on port 445 via TCP. I really prefer not to leave this open, or is it OK? How can I only allow this connection while still leaving the firewall on?

    Mac OS X's Finder seems to be the equivalent to Windows Explorer. In Windows, I enjoy having multiple instances of Explorer open to move/copy files from one folder in a window, to another folder in another window. How can I achieve this in Snow Leopard? I'd like to have shortcut key, as well as a dock icon solution. Or maybe there's a better program than Finder out there that does this?

  • Good Linux disaster-ready filesystem?

    I'm working on this emergency open wi-fi network project and it includes a local website (nginx + MySQL). In order to eliminate SPOFs, we're going to setup at least two of everything (server, switch, router, etc.). This network is thought to work when an earthquake strikes and it's very likely to a server to go to down, if so, we need to be able to boot them up and be operating as soon as possible. Do any of you know if any linux filesystem would work better than others in this scenario?

    I'm trying to get MySQL to function as a backend for authenticating users on CentOS 6.3. So far I have successfully installed and configured libnss-mysql. I can test this by doing: # groups testuser testuser : sftp Testuser is a member of the sftp group in fact, all MySQL based useraccounts will be hardcoded to it. The sftp group is chrooted and forced to use internal-sftp so they cannot do anything but access their home directory. Then I configured pam-mysql and PAM to allow mysql logins. This also works.. When SELinux is not enforcing. When I do setenforce 1 users can no longer login. Error: Permission denied, please try again.
