• ntpd on Fedora Core 6 with high negative time rest values

  The basic problem is we have a FC6 server instance running on a virtual machine, and the system time seems to have been slowly varying until it is now causing a problem. The server runs 24/7 and has been up for 155 days. It has been changed to show GMT, and reports the time as (example) 00:15:15 GMT whereas the actual time is 00:00:00 GMT. This is an offset of 915 seconds. selinux has been changed to 'setenforce 0' for testing and I am running as root. I stop the ntpd service and change the time in System|Administration|Date & Time. The time still shows the same with 'date' in bash. There are no error logs. I change the date with 'date --set' in bash. The response confirms the changed date. I run 'date' and the incorrect date is shown. There are no error logs. I start the ntpd service and /var/log/messages shows success with 'time reset -915.720139s'. The date remains unchanged. ntpq -p shows three three time servers all have offsets of around -915 seconds. I stop ntpd service and try 'ntpd -gqx' and get the same result as above - success, but a large negative time reset. I've tried varying combinations of the above, and a few more settings in System|Administration|Date & Time - no change. I just need to reset the system time to GMT. No offset. But I can't wait for ntpd to slew the time over the next few weeks. Any advice is welcome, cheers! Sure this shouldn't be this difficult... Mark...

• Oracle performance problems with large batch of XSL operations

  I have a system that is performing many XSL transformations on XMLType objects. The problem is that the system gradually slows down over time, and sometimes crashes when it runs out of memory. It seems that the slow down (and possibly memory crash) is around the dbms_xslprocessor.processXSL function call, which gradually takes longer and longer to complete.   I'm triying to compile my iPhone app from ssh. This is for my build tool that run in another machine. The base sdk is iPhone Device 3.0. The error is : "Couldn't load plug-in 'com.apple.Xcode.iPhoneSupport'" However, executing from the regular terminal run ok. Also directly from xcode. • Accommodating hierarchical data in SQL Server 2005 database design

  Context I am fairly new to database design (=know the basics) and am grappling with how best to design my database for a project I am currently working on. In short, my database will keep a log of which employees have attended certain health and safety courses throughout the year. There are multiple types of course e.g. moving objects, fire safety, hygiene etc. In terms of my database design I need to accommodate the following: Each location can have multiple divisions Each division can have multiple departments Each department can have multiple functions Each function can have multiple job roles Each job role can have different course requirements Also note that the structure at each location may not be the same e.g. the departments within divisions are not the same across locations and the functions within departments may also differ. Edit - updated to better articulate problem Let's assume I am just looking at Location, Division and Department and I have my database as follows: LocationTable DivisionTable DepartmentTable LocationID(PK) DivisionID(PK) DepartmentID(PK) LocationName DivisionName DepartmentName There is a many-to-many relationship between Locations and Divisions and also between Departments and Divisions. Suppose I set up a 'Junction Table' as follows: Location_Division LocationID(FK) DivisionID(FK) Using Location_Division I could easily pull back the Divisions for any Location. However, suppose I want to pull back all departments for a given Division in a given Location. If I set up another 'Junction Table' for Division and Department then I can't see how I would differentiate Division by Location? • iphone cannot rotate views in TabBar controller

  Hello, I am working on an application that consists of a TabBar controller. Within on of its tab, I have a subclass of UITableViewController, within this list I have a Core-plot graph in the first cell and some other data in the 4 following cells. When I return YES in the shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation method, I would expect the autoresizing of the list view to happen, but... nothing. When I add some log in the willRotateToInterfaceOrientation method, they are not displayed. Is there something I missed ? • Weird error running com-exposed assembly

  I am facing the following issue when deploying a com-exposed assembly to my client's. The COM component should be consummed by a vb6 application. Here's how it's done 1) I have one c# project which has a class with a couple of methods exposed to COM 2) The project has references to multiple assemblies 3) I compile the project, generating a folder (named dllcom) that contains the assembly plus all the referenced dlls 4) I include in the folder a .bat which does the following: regasm /u c:\dllcom\LibInsertador.dll del LibInsertador.tlb regasm c:\dllcom\LibInsertador.dll /tlb:c:\dllcom\LibInsertador.tlb /codebase c:\dllcom\ pause 5) After running the bat locally in many workstations of my laboratory, i'm able to consume the generated tlb from my vb6 application without any problems. I'm even able to update the dll by only means of running this bat, without having to recompile the vb6 application. I mean that im not having issues of vb6 fiding and invoking the exposed com object. The problem 6) I send the SAME FOLDER to my client 7) They execute the .bat locally, without any errors 8) They execute the vb6 application, vb6 finds the main assembly, the .net code seems to run correctly (it's even able to generate a log file) until it has to intantiate it's first referenced assembly. Then, they get the following exception: "Could not load type 'GYF.Common.TypeBuilder' from assembly 'GYF_Common, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null'." Where "GYF.Common" is an assembly referenced by LibInsertador and TypeBuilder is a class contained in GYF.Common. GYF.Common is not a signed assembly and it's not in the GAC, just in the same folder with Libinsertador. According to .net reflector, the version is correct. ¿Any ideas about what could be happening?

  I am getting Cannot enlist Synchronization. LocalTransactionCoordinator is completing or completed exception when integrating my method is called from the portlet. I am using spring transaction management for handling all the hibernate transaction in the spring configuration file through AOP. When I run my hibernate dao method for persisting the data through Junit its working fine. Exception description: I am facing an issue that is when I run my code through unit test case data is getting updated in database properly but when I run the same code with integration with portlet my code is executing finely but after the completion of transaction the records is not getting updated to database. • Cannot connect Linux XAMPP PHP to SQL Server database.

  I've searched many sites without success. I'm using XAMPP 1.7.3a on Ubuntu 9.1. I have used the methods found at http://www.webcheatsheet.com/PHP/connect_mssql_database.php, they all fail. I am able to "connect" with a linked database through MS Access, however, that is not an acceptable solution as not all users will have Access. The first method (at webcheatsheet) uses mssql_connect, et.al. but I get this error from the mssql_connect() call: Warning: mssql_connect() [function.mssql-connect]: Unable to connect to server: [my server] in [my code] [my server] is the server address, I have used both the host name and the IP address. [my code] is a reference to the file and line number in my .php file. Is there a log file somewhere that would have more information about the failure, both on my machine and SQL Server? We do not have a bona-fide DBA, so I will need specific information to pass on if the issue seems to be on the server side. All assistance is appreciated, including RTFM when the location of the M is provided! Thanks

• Rails apps blew up on mediatemple's (dv) server

  i managed to fix this issue but i wanted to document it here for any others whom might have similar problems. I'm running a mediatemple (dv) rage server. monit started sending me alerts that i was having resource limitations on the server. logged into plesk and the CPU was pinned at 99.9%. Rebooted the server, catastrophe avoided... Not quite - all my rails apps were not loading My Setup ruby 1.8.6 Rails 2.3.5 w/ passenger installed as an apache module. I noticed a defunct ruby process so i killed and rebooted the server but runby continued to come back as defunct. Started trolling thru the apache log and i saw errors irt updating rubygems. i updated to the latest but then continued to get gem errors. Basically, I had to go thru all my apps and update any gems manually, reboot apache, and all was restored. Not really sure the cause of the issue but wanted to note it for posterity. Anybody else in the community ever have similar issues???

  I want to generate this SQL statement in LINQ: select * from Foo where Value in ( 1, 2, 3 ) The tricky bit seems to be that Value is a column that allows nulls. The equivalent LINQ code would seem to be: IEnumerable<Foo> foos = MyDataContext.Foos; IEnumerable<int> values = GetMyValues(); var myFoos = from foo in foos where values.Contains(foo.Value) select foo; This, of course, doesn't compile, since foo.Value is an int? and values is typed to int. I've tried this: IEnumerable<Foo> foos = MyDataContext.Foos; IEnumerable<int> values = GetMyValues(); IEnumerable<int?> nullables = values.Select( value => new Nullable<int>(value)); var myFoos = from foo in foos where nullables.Contains(foo.Value) select foo; ...and this: IEnumerable<Foo> foos = MyDataContext.Foos; IEnumerable<int> values = GetMyValues(); var myFoos = from foo in foos where values.Contains(foo.Value.Value) select foo; Both of these versions give me the results I expect, but they do not generate the SQL I want. It appears that they're generating full-table results and then doing the Contains() filtering in-memory (ie: in plain LINQ, without -to-SQL); there's no IN clause in the DataContext log. Is there a way to generate a SQL IN for Nullable types?

  I'm want to test two services: service which builds file name service which writes some data into file provided by 1st service In first i'm building some complex file structure (just for example {user}/{date}/{time}/{generatedId}.bin) In second i'm writing data to the file passed by first service (1st service calls 2nd service) How can I test both services using mocks without making any real IO interractions? Just for example: 1st service: public class DefaultLogService implements LogService { public void log(SomeComplexData data) { serializer.write(new FileOutputStream(buildComplexFileStructure()), data); or serializer.write(buildComplexFileStructure(), data); or serializer.write(new GenericInputEntity(buildComplexFileStructure()), data); } private ComplextDataSerializer serializer; // mocked in tests } 2nd service: public class DefaultComplexDataSerializer implements ComplexDataSerializer { void write(InputStream stream, SomeComplexData data) {...} or void write(File file, SomeCompexData data) {...} or void write(GenericInputEntity entity, SomeComplexData data) {...} } In first case i need to pass FileOutputStream which will create a file (i.e. i can't test 1st service) In second case i need to pass File. What can i do in 2nd service test if I need to test data which will be written to specified file? (i can't test 2nd service) In third case i think i need some generic IO object which will wrap File. • Diffie-Hellman in Silverlight

  I am trying to devise a security scheme for encrypting the application level data between a silverlight client, and a php webservice that I created. Since I am dealing with a public website the information I am pulling from the service is public, but the information I'm submitting to the webservice is not public. There is also a back end to the website for administration, so naturally all application data being pushed and pulled from the webservice to the silverlight administration back end must also be encrypted. Silverlight does not support asymmetric encryption, which would work for the public website. Symmetric encryption would only work on the back end because users do not log in to the public website, so no password based keys could be derived. Still symmetric encryption would be great, but I cannot securely save the private key in the silverlight client. Because it would either have to be hardcoded or read from some kind of config file. None of that is considered secure. So... plan B. My final alternative would be then to implement the Diffie-Hellman algorithm, which supports symmetric encryption by means of key agreement. However Diffie-Hellman is vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. In other words, there is no guarantee that either side is sure of each others identity, making it possible for communication to be intercepted and altered without the receiving party knowing about it. It is thus recommended to use a private shared key to encrypt the key agreement handshaking, so that the identity of either party is confirmed. This brings me back to my initial problem that resulted in me needing to use Diffie-Hellman, how can I use a private key in a silverlight client without hardcoding it either in the code or an xml file. I'm all out of love on this one... is there any answer to this?

Do I really have to log the IP of every visitor to keep them from artificially boosting page view counts by spamming the refresh button (or writing a quick and dirty script to do it for them)? More information So right now you can inflate your view count with the following few lines of Python code. Which is so little that you don't even really need to write a script, you could just type it into an interactive session: from urllib import urlopen num_of_times_to_hit_page = 100 url_of_the_page = "http://example.com" for x in range(num_of_times_to_hit_page): urlopen(url_of_the_page) Solution I'll probably use To me, it's a pretty rough situation when you need to do a bunch of writes to the database on EVERY page view, but I guess it can't be helped. I'm going to implement IP logging due to several users artificially inflating their view count. It's not that they're bad people or even bad users. See the answer about solving the problem with caching... I'm going to pursue that route first. Will update with results. For what it's worth, it seems Stack Overflow is using cookies (I can't increment my own view count, but it increased when I visited the site in another browser.)   Hello, I am trying to get Fluent nHibernate to generate mappings so I can take a look at the files and the sql. • Need to kill a session?

  Really quick here... I think I have the answer, but just looking for some validation. I have a site with two "points of entry." One is for a standard user and one is for an admin account. In the real world, an admin could have a standard user account and try to login as an admin while already being under the standard user session. I have two separate front ends to facilitate login. The normal user one is frilly and has ads and the like, the admin one is strictly business, so any suggestion to have the two user types login through the same "door" is not on the table. Would you advise on the admin login page to destroy any active sessions? Once the admin is in, they'll only be tooling around in their admin area and not on the main site. Has anyone run into probs using this method and having an admin-type user try to log back in in a new window as a "user" to view changes from a logged in user's prespective? Thanks in advance.   I'm going through a Django book and I seem to be stuck. The code base used in the book is .96 and I'm using 1.0 for my Django install. The portion I'm stuck at is related to Django comments (django.contrib.comments). When I submit my comments I get "Comment post not allowed (400) Why: Missing content_type or object_pk field". I've found the Django documentation to be a bit lacking in this area and I'm hoping to get some help. The comment box is displayed just fine, it's when I submit the comment that I get the above error (or security warning as it truly appears).
