• Linq - how does it work??

  Hey, I have just been looking into Linq with ASP.Net. It is very neat indeed. I was just wondering - how do all the classes get populated? I mean in ASP.Net, suppose you have a Linq file called Catalogue, and you then use a For loop to loop through Catalogue.Products and print each Product name. How do the details get stored? Does it just go through the Products table on page load and create another instance of class Product for each row, effectively copying an entire table into an array of class Product? If so, I think I have created a system very much like this, in the sense that there is a SiteContent module with an instance of each Manager class - for example there is UserManager, ProductManager, SettingManager and alike. UserManager contains an instance of the User class for each row in the Users table. They also contain methods such as Create, Update and Remove. These Managers and their "Items" are created on every page load. This just makes it nice and easy to access users, products, settings etc in every page as far as I, the developer, am concerned. Any any subsequent pages I need to create, I just need to reference SiteContent.UserManager to access a list of users, rather than executing a query from within that page (ie this method separates out data access from the workings of the page, in the same way as using code behind separates out the workings of the page from how the page is layed out). However the problem is that this technique seems rather slow. I mean it is effectively creating a database on every page load, taking data from another database. I have taken measures such as preventing, for example, the ProductManager from being created if it is not referenced on page load. Therefore it does not load data into storage when it is not needed. My question is basically whether my technique does the exact same thing as Linq, in the sense of duplicating data from tables into properties of classes.. • Some questions about slugs in ASP.NET MVC content system

  In my application I'm currently using forms which allow to enter Title and Slug fields. Now I've been struggling with the slugs thing for a while because I can never decide once and for all how to handle them. 1) Make Title and Slug indenpendent Should I allow users to enter both Title and Slug separetely? This is what I had first. I also had an option that if user did not enter the Slug it was derived from the Title. If both were enter, the Slug field took precedence. 2) Derive Slug from Title, when content is inserted that's it for the Slug, no more changes Then, I switched to only Title field and derive Slug from title. While doing it I found out that now I have to change all the forms that allowed user to enter a slug. This way of doing it also prevents users to change Slugs - they can change the Title but it has no effect on the Slug. You can think of it like Slug is uniqued ID. 3) Now I'm thinking again of allowing users to change slug Though I don't think it is all that useful. How many times does the content that someone already added, spent time on writing it, even require a change of either Title or slug? I don't think it is that many times. The biggest problem with the 3rd option is that If I use Slugs as IDs, I need to update the reference all over the place when Slug changes. Or maintain a table that would contain somekind of Slug history. What are you thoughts on these, I hope, valid questions?

• Struggling with currency in Cocoa.

  I'm trying to do something I'd think would be fairly simple: Let a user input a dollar amount, store that amount in an NSNumber (NSDecimalNumber?), then display that amount formatted as currency again at some later time. My trouble is not so much with the setNumberStyle:NSNumberFormatterCurrencyStyle and displaying floats as currency. The trouble is more with how said numberFormatter works with this UITextField. I can find few examples. This thread from November and this one give me some ideas but leaves me with more questions. I am using the UIKeyboardTypeNumberPad keyboard and understand that I should probably show $0.00 (or whatever local currency format is) in the field upon display then as a user enters numerals to shift the decimal place along: Begin with display $0.00 Tap 2 key: display $0.02 Tap 5 key: display $0.25 Tap 4 key: display $2.54 Tap 3 key: display $25.43 Then [numberFormatter numberFromString:textField.text] should give me a value I can store in my NSNumber variable. Sadly I'm still struggling: Is this really the best/easiest way? If so then maybe someone can help me with the implementation? I feel UITextField may need a delegate responding to every keypress but not sure what, where and how to implement it?! Any sample code? I'd greatly appreciate it! I've searched high and low... Edit1: So I'm looking into NSFormatter's stringForObjectValue: and the closest thing I can find to what benzado recommends: UITextViewTextDidChangeNotification. Having really tough time finding sample code on either of them...so let me know if you know where to look?

• How to change TestNG dataProvider order

  Hi, I am running hundreds of tests against a large publishing system and would like to paralellize the tests using TestNG. However, I cannot find any easy way of doing this. Each test case instanciates an instance of this publisher, send some messages, wait for those messages to be published, then dump out the contents of the publish queues and compare against expected outcome. Doing this with so many tests (even if I paralellize using threads, still takes a very long time to complete (1 day or more)). We've found that in testing this sort of system, it's best to start up system once, run all tests to send their messages, wait for publish to do its thing, dump all outputs, and match outputs with tests and verify. For example, instead of the following: @Test public void testRule1() { Publisher pub = new Publisher(); pub.sendRule(new Rule("test1-a")); sleep(10); // wait 10 seconds pub.dumpRules(); verifyRule("test1-a"); } We wanted to do something like the following: @Test public void testRule1(bool sendMode) { if(sendMode) { this.pub.sendRule(new Rule("test1-a")); } else { verifyRule("test1-a"); } } Where you have a dataProvider run through all the tests with sendMode = true and then perform dumpAllRules() followed by running through all of the tests again with sendMode = false. The problem is, TestNG calls the same method twice, once with sendMode = true followed by sendMode = false. Is there anyway to accomplish this in TestNG? Thanks!

• Will HttpResponse.Filter buffer the whole data before start the sending?

  Hi, An user posts this article about how to use HttpResponse.Filter to compress large amounts of data. But what will happen if I try to transfer a 4G file? will it load the whole file in memory in order to compress it? or otherwise it will compress it chunk by chunk? The video plays, so that's working BUT: I want to have an old school tv (round corners) in foreground with switches and so on. The tv is an image with transparent pixels in the middle, so that a video lying behind the tv will shine through as if the video would be shown on the tv. But first of all the video has a border that I can't remove and second it's always in the foreground. In Safari and in Firefox and Mac it's working. So is it an iPhone thing, could it be that it simply won't work on iPhone ? Or do I have some css/html typos ?

• How can I add a link with a UID from a User Reference from a table in Drupal Views

  I have the following in Drupal 6: A Master CCK type which contains a User reference field and other fields. There will only be one record per user here. A View of this CCK, shown as a table, with one of the fields being the user ref from the CCK type. This field is initially shown as a user name, linking to the user profile. A Second CCK type which can have several pieces of data about a particular user. A View for this CCK type, displaying information as a table. It takes a user id as an argument (an integer) I want to click on the user name in the master view, and be directed to the detail view for this user. To do this, I tried selecting 'Output this field as a link' on the user field. The thing available for me to replace are: Fields * [field_my_user_ref_uid_1] == Content: User (field_my_user_ref) Arguments * %1 == User: Uid However, the [field_my_user_ref_uid_1] element is replaced by the user name, and %1 seems to get replaced with an empty string. How can I put the user id in here?

  Hello everybody. On my wordpress website one little thing doesn't work. Sometimes the Webserver adds the port number 16080 in the URL, which leads to an error (network timeout). Wrong: http://www.example.com:16080/about-us/weekly-program/?month=may&yr=2010 Correct: http://www.example.com/about-us/weekly-program/?month=may&yr=2010 Has someone a "Server port 16080 problem fix"? Is it possible, that I need to add a ServerName directive to the config file to tell the domain name of the server? Cheers Juri !!!update!!! • How do I stop inheritance in xaml?

  Hi Let's say I have some Control that has been disabled. It contains a bunch of elements, but I want one of those child elements to remain enabled. Something like this: <ContentControl IsEnabled="False"> <Border> <Button Content="Button" IsEnabled="True"/> </Border> </ContentControl> So in this example, the Button's IsEnabled="True" setting gets overridden by its parent. Is there a way of stopping this from happening? This seems like a strange thing to be doing, but I have a situation where, when a Control is disabled and a user mouses down on it, I still want an event to be triggered. I read in WPF Unleashed that wrapping something in a Frame control, "..isolates the content from the rest of the UI [and] properties that would normally be inherited down the element tree stop when they reach the Frame", but wrapping the Button in the example above in a Frame doesn't work. Am I on the wrong track here?

• Speed Problem - Animating Height Change in UITableView

  So I have a huge UITableView, between 1000 and 3000 rows. Each row needs to, when selected, expand to include several buttons. I do this by rendering the buttons below the cell, enabling clipping on the cells, and then just animating a change in height when they're selected. So I have heightForRowAtIndex checking if the row is selected, if so it gives a different height value. To do the animation, I have the following: - (void) tableView: (UITableView *) tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath: (NSIndexPath *) indexPath { [self.tableView beginUpdates]; [self.tableView endUpdates]; } This all works wonderfully until I get around 1000 rows, at which point the animations still work and are still quite smooth, but they lag by a second or two. My first thought was a memory problem, but everything is being autoreleased and upon inspection my application isn't even receiving a memory warning message. So...any ideas on what this might be and how I can erase this lag between selection and change in cell height? Oh, and one last thing - right now I'm testing this on the iPad, so if this is a problem there, I expect it to be worse on our other target devices (iPhone and iPod).

• VB.Net Custom Controls

  This might be basic question, however I am confused on some .Net Concpets. I am trying to create a "Data Browser" in VB.net. Similar to a Web Browser however each Tab in the Data Browser is a view of some Data (from a database or flat files) not a webpage. The UI on each Tab is mostly the same. A list Box (showing datatypes, etc), a TextBox (where you can create a filter), and a DataGridView, a DataSource Picker, etc. The only thing that would change on each tab is that there could be a custom "Viewer". In most cases (depending on the datasource), this would be the datagrid, however in other cases it would be a treecontrol. From reading through the .Net documents, it appears that I need to Create a Custom Control (MyDataBrowser) Consisting of a Panel with all the common Controls (except the viewer). Every time the user says "New Tab", a new tabpage is created and this MyDataBrowser Control is added, The MyDataBrowser control would contain some function that was able to then create the approriate viewer based on the data at hand. If this is the suggested route, how is the best way to go about creating the MyDataBrowser Control (A) Is this a Custom Control Library? (B) Is this an Inhertited Form? (C) Is this an Inherrited User Control? I assume that I have to create a .DLL and add as a reference. Any direction on this would be appreciated. Does the custom Control have its own properties (I would like to save/load these from a configuration file). Is it possible to add a backgroundworker to this customcontrol? Thanks.

• Constant NSDictionary/NSArray for class methods.

  I am trying to code a global lookup table of sorts. I have game data that is stored in character/string format in a plist, but which needs to be in integer/id format when it is loaded. For instance, in the level data file, a "p" means player. In the game code a player is represented as the integer 1. This let's me do some bitwise operations, etc. I am simplifying greatly here, but trying to get the point across. Also, there is a conversion to coordinates for the sprite on a sprite sheet. Right now this string-integer, integer-string, integer-coordinate, etc. conversion is taking place in several places in code using a case statement. This stinks, of course, and I would rather do it with a dictionary lookup. I created a class called levelInfo, and want to define the dictionary for this conversion, and then class methods to call when I need to do a conversion, or otherwise deal with level data. NSString *levelObjects = @"empty,player,object,thing,doohickey"; int levelIDs[] = [0,1,2,4,8]; // etc etc @implementation LevelInfo +(int) crateIDfromChar: (char) crateChar { int idx = [[crateTypes componentsSeparatedByString:@","] indexOfObject: crateChar]; return levelIDs[idx]; } +(NSString *) crateStringFromID: (int) crateID { return [[crateTypes componentsSeparatedByString:@","] objectAtIndex: crateID]; } @end Is there a better way to do this? It feels wrong to basically build these temporary arrays, or dictionaries, or whatever for each call to do this translation. And I don't know of a way to declare a constant NSArray or NSDictionary. Please, tell me a better way....

• Rails Fixtures Don't Seem to Support Transitive Associations

  So I've got 3 models in my app, connected by HABTM relations: class Member < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :groups end class Group < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :software_instances end class SoftwareInstance < ActiveRecord::Base end And I have the appropriate join tables, and use foxy fixtures to load them: -- members.yml -- rick: name: Rick groups: cals -- groups.yml -- cals: name: CALS software_instances: delphi -- software_instances.yml -- delphi: name: No, this is not a joke, someone in our group is still maintaining Delphi apps... And I do a rake db:fixtures:load, and examine the tables. Yep, the join tables groups_members and groups_software_instances have appropriate IDs in, big numbers generated by hashing the fixture names. Yay! And if I run script/console, I can look at rick's groups and see that cals is in there, or cals's software_instances and delphi shows up. (Likewise delphi knows that it's in the group cals.) Yay! But if I look at rick.groups[0].software_instances...nada. []. And, oddly enough, rick.groups[0].id is something like 30 or 10, not 398398439. I've tried swapping around where the association is defined in the fixtures, e.g. -- members.yml -- rick name: rick -- groups.yml -- cals name: CALS members: rick No error, but same result. (Later: Confirmed, same behavior on MySQL. In fact I get the same thing if I take the foxification out and use ERB to directly create the join tables, so: -- license_groups_software_instances -- cals_delphi: group_id: <%= Fixtures.identify 'cals' % software_instance_id: <%= Fixtures.identify 'delphi' $ Before I chuck it all, reject foxy fixtures and all who sail in her and just hand-code IDs...anybody got a suggestion as to why this is happening? I'm currently working in Rails 2.3.2 with sqlite3, this occurs on both OS X and Ubuntu (and I think with MySQL too). TIA, my compadres.

• MSBuild fails, but building inside Visual Studio works fine

  C#, .NET 2.0 I have an ASP.NET website in a solution, with 2 other projects (used as library references). When I build (debug or release) in Visual Studio, everything works fine. However, building with MSBuild fails. This build had been working (it's actually invoked via a nAnt task). The only thing that has changed is that I have a new user control whose Type I am referencing in my code behind. The offending code is in my ASPX code behind. MessageAlert is the UserControl: MessageAlert userControl = this.LoadControl("~/UserControls/MessageAlert.ascx") as MessageAlert; userControl.UserMessage = message; this.UserMessages.Controls.Add(userControl); In order to get Visual Studio to recognize the type 'MessageAlert' I had to: 1) Set the ClassName="MessageAlert" in the @Control markup at the top of the user control (because using the auto-generated UserControls_MessageAlert wasn't working either) 2) Register the user control in the markup of my ASPX, using an @Register 3) Add a "using ASP" to the top of my code behind After those steps, I could successfully reference the MessageAlert type in my codebehind from visual studio. But from MSBuild I get "The type or namespace name 'MessageAlert' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) " The MSBuild execution is very simple - it points the the very same solution file and sets the configuration property to release. It seems, based on the # of steps I had to go through to get Type references to MessageAlert in Visual Studio, that there is something missing in the MSBuild process. But what? Doesn't Visual Studio in fact invoke MSBuild behind the scenes? Is there a better way to reference a UserControl type in the code behind of an ASPX? EDIT: To clarify, the MessageAlert user control is not in the other referenced assemblies/projects. I mentioned them because, together with the website, the compose the Solution file, which is the same sln file being built by MS Build.

• MSI wrapper for msdeploy?

  Just moved to vs2010 and found that deployment is quite different. The old way I did things (vs2008) was as follows: 1) I right-click on my web app and "Add web deployment project" 2) Start a web setup project, dump that web deployment project output in it, and add any custom installer actions (connection strings or other user input) as necessary using the custom installer class. Easy! Now that I don't have the "Add web deployment project" option (or can't find it!?!?), msdeploy seems to be the thing to do. I have successfully got this to work via command line, but I still need some custom actions. In this example, we have separated our web services deployment from our UI deployment (Silverlight) so that they can be hosted separately or together. So... during/after install I need to know from the user where the web services are located. So I tried this: 1) Start a web setup project, and include all of the deploy package files (.deploy.cmd, /setparameters.xml, etc) 2) Gather user input in my custom installer class, and shell execute the deploy.cmd. Problem is... the deploy fails on deleting the zip file since it's use by another process (I assume it's my installer). Anyone have any ideas on how to get around this? Or is there a better way to accomplish this task? Any input would be appreciated! Nate

• Resizing and saving an image in WinMobile and .NET CF throws OutOfMemoryException

  I have a WinMobile app which allows the user the snap a photo with the camera, and then use for for various things. The photo can be snapped at 1600x1200, 800x600 or 640x480, but it must always be resized to 400px for the longest size (the other is proportional of course). • Xcode Link Frameworks "Relative to Current SDK" Doesn't Work When Mixing Mac Framework and iPhone St

  I have a framework of code I maintain. It's got mac and iphone objective-c code. And some of it is shared. I'm not having any problems with code. It's a problem with Xcode. Let's just call my framework "AwesomeKit" for this problem. The first thing I did was create an xcode Framework project called "AwesomeKit". Add source files to it, link against the common mac frameworks: foundation, cocoa, carbon, etc. It compiles fine. Then, add a new "static library" target, let's call it "AwesomeKit-iPhone" and set the base SDK in the build settings to iphone device 3.1.3. The problem comes when I try to add "Existing Frameworks" to the AweseomKit-iPhone target. -First change the current build target to AwesomeKit-iPhone. -Right click on any group and select "Add Existing Frameworks..." -Choose UIKit.framework UIKit will immediately be highlighted red, as if it's missing. It is indeed missing because Xcode uses the "Relative SDK" setting from the "Mac OS 10.6" SDK. When it should be using it relative to the current target's base sdk iphone device 3.1.3. What the heck? Has anyone experienced this? This is really annoying.

  I have divs that I want to display at specific times throughout the day. I have it working in PHP, but it requires refreshing the browser manually. I would like my script to automatically load the right div when the time is right. Am I on the right track? Perhaps there is a jquery plugin for this sort of thing that would handle the refreshing? Any help is greatly appreciated... • Trouble running setup package after Publishing in Visual Studio 2008

  I've got a small winform application that I've written that is running fine in the IDE. It builds with no errors or warnings. It's not using any third party controls. I'm coding in C# in Visual Studio 2008. When I Build -- Publish the application, everything seems to work fine. However, when I go and attempt to install the application via the setup.exe file I get an error message that says, "Application cannot be started." • Using jstl tags in a dynamically created div

  I want to be able to show some data based on criteria the user enters in a text field. I can easily take this data, process the form post, and show the data on another page. However, I want to be able to do it all on the same page - they click the button, and a new div shows up with the information. This doesn't seem too complicated, but I want to use jstl tags to format the data like: <c:forEach items="${model.data}" var="d"> <tr> <td><fmt:formatDate type="date" dateStyle="short" timeStyle="default" value="${d.reportDate}" /></td> <td><c:out value="${d.cardType}"/></td> </tr> </c:forEach> If jstl tags are processed when the page loads, can I use that in this new div? Can I update it via a javascript (using prototype) function to display the proper data? Will I be able to do the same thing if they change the criteria and click the submit button again?

• Java / Groovy Socket - Detecting the socket being closed in a non-blocking way

  I'm trying to create a small HTTP proxy that can re-write the request/headers as needed to suit my requirements. If one already exists, please, point me to it. Otherwise... I've written something that ALMOST works. It can do the proxy function, but not the re-write (yet). Problem is, I can't detect when the remote socket has been closed down without doing a blocking read. It is CRITICAL for the functionality of this thing that it be able to detect the socket being closed without blocking. I have SCOURED the Java API documentation, and I can't find ANY indication that it is even possible. • Multilingual spellcheck on WPF richtextbox

  I need to turn spellcheck on for a richtextbox, and set the language to one the user has picked from a drop down. For now, I'm just testing it by building the richtextbox in xaml and providing a language to the xaml language attribute. I've read two different resources and one says I need to set the language attribute, and the other says I need to set the xml:lang attribute. Neither seems to work. I've tried setting either one to "es" for Spanish, and I've also tried setting both to "es". I've also tried french by setting them to "fr-FR", without success. The only thing that happens is that english words aren't marked, but the other language words are marked as misspelled. I also read that I need to change the keyboard language. This would be a problem for my application as the language within the application needs to be switched on the fly, so having the end user go to their keyboard settings just so spellcheck will work is a problem. However, I've changed my keyboard settings, and spell check still does not work properly. This time it doesn't mark anything as misspelled, even misspelled english words. What am I missing? • Adding a navigation bar to a web view in a tab bar app

  I've built the tab bar application in IB, with three tabs. The third tab happily displays a UIWebview where you can browse. The only thing missing is a back button, as not all web pages supply such a link. I need a navigation bar hooked up properly to the correct classes. I'm still a bit unsure about exactly how the hierarchy should look in interface builder and how to hook it up properly. Currently, the third tab is hooked up to a referencing outlet called 'webnews' in the class 'thirdviewcontroller', and the UIWebView (under a normal IUView in the hierarchy, which in turn is under the third tab bar controller) is connected to the webnews outlet. How do I make the navbar control the webview, and do I add code to the thirdviewcontroller.m that lets the navbar on the view control the webview 'back' function? What do I hook up as the delegate for it? Currently I have an app delegate, but that's hooked up to the tab bar. I'm not really after specific code as much as a general 'how it works' clue :) (Unless I can just add the navbar dynamically to the functioning app... but I don't think addSubView on viewWillAppear {} in thirdviewcontroller.m will create the proper functionality?) If I were to guess at the simplest solution, I'd guess create a navbarcontroller.h/.m, slap a navbar on the view in IB, connect the third tab to navbarcontroller, connect the navbar to the webview (?) and move the webnews outlet to navbarcontroller.h, and connect the webview to it. But I don't quite have the nerve to try, better to ask advice first.
