• Objective-C retain clarification

- by Maverick
I'm looking at this code: NSMutableArray *controllers = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; for (unsigned i = 0; i < kNumberOfPages; i++) { [controllers addObject:[NSNull null]]; } self.viewControllers = controllers; [controllers release]; Later on... - (void)dealloc { [viewControllers release]; ... } I see that self.viewControllers and controllers now point to the same allocated memory (of type NSMutableArray *), but when I call [controllers release] isn't self.viewControllers released as well, or is setting self.viewControllers = controllers automatically retains that memory?

• When debugging in VS 2008 why does the debugger land on a second return statement?

- by Hellfire
When debugging the following console program: class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine(DoIt(false)); Console.WriteLine(DoIt(true)); } private static Boolean DoIt(Boolean abort) { try { throw new InvalidOperationException(); } catch(Exception ex) { if (abort) { return true; } Console.WriteLine("Got here"); return false; } } } Why does the IDE land on the second return statement during the second call to DoIt()? The results of the execution is correct but the debugging experience is misleading. Is this a known issue? Is the behavior in VS 2010 the same?

• Why isn't the new() generic constraint satisfied by a class with optional parameters in the construc

- by Joshua Flanagan
The following code fails to compile, producing a "Widget must be a non-abstract type with a public parameterless constructor" error. I would think that the compiler has all of the information it needs. Is this a bug? An oversight? Or is there some scenario where this would not be valid? public class Factory<T> where T : new() { public T Build() { return new T(); } } public class Widget { public Widget(string name = "foo") { Name = name; } public string Name { get; set; } } public class Program { public static void Main() { var widget = new Widget(); // this is valid var factory = new Factory<Widget>(); // compiler error } }

• 1120: Why can't it access the variable?

- by Oden
I'm new at as3, maybe thats the reason why i don't understand, why the setInterval causes an error. <mx:Script> import flash.utils.setInterval; import mx.controls.Alert; [Bindable] public var MyInt:int = 500; setInterval(function():void{ ++MyInt; },1000); </mx:Script> I have a label where the value of MyInt gets visible, the bind works perfect, i've tested it several ways, and i i create a button it grows the number, but if i use the setInterval function i get an error: Access of undefined property myInt. Why? What does cause this? Please explain it, so I can avoid errors like this. Thanks

I want to open from c# an application (standalone flashplayer) and set it position to (0,0) on the screen. How can I do this? So far I've managed to open flashplayer: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Diagnostics; namespace swflauncher { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Process flash = new Process(); flash.StartInfo.WindowStyle = ProcessWindowStyle.Normal; flash.StartInfo.FileName = "D:\\development\\flex4\\runtimes\\player\\10\\win\\FlashPlayer.exe"; flash.Start(); } } }

• How can I assign a DBNull in a better way?

- by Mike
Hi, I need to parse value from a datarow and assign it to another datarow.If the input is valid, then I need to parse it to double or else add a dbnull value to the output.I'm doing the following, is there a better way to do it? public double? GetVolume(object data) { string colValue = data == null ? string.Empty : data.ToString(); double volume; if (!Double.TryParse(colValue.ToString(), out volume)) { return null; } return volume; } public void Assign(DataRow theRowInput,DataRow theRowOutput) { double? volume = GetVolume(theRowInput[0]); if(volumne.HasValue) theRowOutput[0] = volume.value; else theRowOutput[0] = DbNull.Value; return theRowOutput; } Thanks, -M

• How to raise an event when another event is raised?

- by WulfgarPro
Hi, I have an application that handles the OnQuit event of another running application. I would like to raise an additional (custom) event when the OnQuit event is handled. How could I implement such an event? My OnQuit handler is like so: private void StkQuit() { _stkApplicationUi.OnQuit -= StkQuit; Marshal.FinalReleaseComObject(_stkApplicationUi); Application.Exit(); } The reason I require the additional event is so that I can tell my View layer that the application has exited. If this is not the correct way, what would be better? WulfgarPro

• The glutKeyboardFunc does not react to key presses immediately

- by Nibirue
I have a function glutKeyboardFunc(keyboard), where keyboard has: void keyboard(unsigned char key, int x, int y){ float alpha = 1.0; switch(key){ case 'c': glClearColor(1,0,0,alpha); printf("success"); break; } } This is a summary of the function; it works properly, but only once some other action has occurred. For instance, the printf statement reports success immediately on keystroke 'c', but the background color does not become active until I click somewhere else on the canvas. I want all keystrokes to have an immediate effect.

• Should i use lock.lock(): in this method?

- by user962800
I wrote this method whose purpose is to give notice of the fact that a thread is leaving a specific block of code A thread stands for a car which is leaving a bridge so other cars can traverse it . The bridge is accessible to a given number of cars (limited capacity) and it's one way only. public void getout(int diection){ // release the lock semaphore.release(); try{ lock.lock(); //access to shared data if(direction == Car.NORTH) nNordTraversing--; //decreasing traversing threads else nSudTraversing--; bridgeCond.signal(); }finally{ lock.unlock(); } } My question is: should I use lock.lock(); or it's just nonsense? thanks in advance

• comparing int values in android

It doesn't do anything, when the value is less than 3, it shouldn't do anything, but when it is equal to 3, it should run a method. Please help me and thanks SO much in advance! This is the code that i am using: private void checkLivesLeftValue() { if (livesLeftValue == 3) { //Message to display: "You lost! onMethod(); } else { livesLeftValue = livesLeftValue + 1; } }

• How to stop a MFC/win32 control re-painting

- by John
I have a CRichEditCtrl, and an algorithm works on its contents in-place, iterating through the contents and making changes. This seems to cause it to re-paaint every time, which causes flickering and a noticeable time to complete the operation, especially if the control starts scrolling. I wondered if there's a neat way for me to stop it repainting for a period. It's actually a custom subclass of CRichEditCtrl in use so I was thinking something like: void MyCustomEditCtrl::DoAlgorithm() { enableRepaint(false); ... //to the actual work ... enableRepaint(true); } What's the neatest approach? A custom on-paint handler which does nothing when an operation is in progress? Or can repainting actually be disabled?

• When using out parameters in a function, is it good practice to initialize them in the function?

- by adambox
I have a function that uses out parameters to return multiple values to the caller. I would like to initialize them in the function, but I wasn't sure if that's a bad idea since you don't know when you call the function that it's going to change the values right away. The caller might assume that after the function returns, if whatever it was doing didn't work, the values would be whatever they were initialized to in the caller. Is it ok / good for me to initialize in the function? Example: public static void SomeFunction(int ixID, out string sSomething) { sSomething = ""; sSomething = something(ixID); if (sSomething = "") { somethingelse(); sSomething = "bar" } }

• what does this string.format piece of code do?

- by jbkkd
I have this piece of code in c#: private static void _constructRow(SqlDataReader reader, system.IO.StreamWriter stwr, bool getColumnName) { for (int i = 0; i < reader.FieldCount; i++) stwr.Writeline(String.Format("
{0}</td"), getColumnName ? reader.GetName(i) : reader.GetValue(i).ToString())); } I'm trying to understand what the part that start with "getColumnName ?" and ends with ".ToString()" does. I understood that it is a system.object type, but I have no idea what it specifically does or how it works. I want that because of this: "reader" had multiple rows in it, and I want to writeline only specific rows. If anyone can help me on either of those, I'd be grateful.

• What happens if you break out of a Lock() statement?

- by cyclotis04
I'm writing a program which listens to an incoming TcpClient and handles data when it arrives. The Listen() method is run on a separate thread within the component, so it needs to be threadsafe. If I break out of a do while loop while I'm within a lock() statement, will the lock be released? If not, how do I accomplish this? Thanks! (Any other advice on the subject of Asynchronous TCP Sockets is welcome as well.) private void Listen() { do { lock (_client) { if (!_client.Connected) break; lock (_stateLock) { if (!_listening) break; if (_client.GetStream().DataAvailable) HandleData(); } } Thread.Sleep(0); } while (true); }

• c++ compilation error

- by clamp
hello, i got a compile error which i do not understand. i have a h/cpp file combination that does not contain a class but just defines some utility functions. when i try to use a struct that is defined in another class i get the error: error C2027: use of undefined type so, stripped down to the problem, the h file looks like this namespace A { void foo(B::C::SStruct const & Var); } the definition of SStruct is in a class which is in another h-file, that is of course included. namespace B { Class C { struct SStruct { }; } } what am i missing here? thanks!

• Imbedded wpf textbox does not accept input

- by pro3carp3
I put a wpf textbox inside a combobox to allow the user to enter a custom setting. I can read the keypress in the keydown event, but the text in the textbox does not change. What am I missing? <ComboBoxItem Name="GridSizeCustom"> <StackPanel Height="30" Orientation="Horizontal"> <TextBlock Text="Grid Size (8 - 200)" HorizontalAlignment="Left" VerticalAlignment="Top" Margin="0" /> <TextBox Name="GridSizeBox" KeyDown="test" Width="50" /> </StackPanel> </ComboBoxItem> I step through this event handler when I press a key, but no change to the textbox text: public void test(Object sender, KeyboardEventArgs e) { int x = 0; } Any help is appreciated. • Problems with capturing an event in child object in Actionscript

- by Raigomaru
I have two classes. The first one (the starting class): package { import flash.display.Sprite; import flash.events.KeyboardEvent; import tetris.*; public class TetrisGame extends Sprite { private var _gameWell:Well; public function TetrisGame() { _gameWell = new Well(); addChild(_gameWell); } } } The second: package tetris { import flash.display.Sprite; import flash.events.KeyboardEvent; public class Well extends Sprite { public function Well() { super(); addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN, onKeyboard); } private function onKeyboard():void { //some code is here } } } But when I press any buttons on my keyboard, the child class Well doesn't have any reaction. What's the problem?

• Help with memory leak (malloc)

- by user146780
I'v followed a tutorial to use OGL tesselaton. In one of the callbacks there is a malloc and it creates a leak every time I render a new frame. void CALLBACK combineCallback(GLdouble coords[3], GLdouble *vertex_data[4], GLfloat weight[4], GLdouble **dataOut) { GLdouble *vertex; vertex = (GLdouble *) malloc(6 * sizeof(GLdouble)); vertex[0] = coords[0]; vertex[1] = coords[1]; vertex[2] = coords[2]; for (int i = 3; i < 6; i++) { vertex[i] = weight[0] * vertex_data[0][i] + weight[1] * vertex_data[0][i] + weight[2] * vertex_data[0][i] + weight[3] * vertex_data[0][i]; } *dataOut = vertex; } I'v tried to free(vertex) but then the polygons did not render. I also tried allocating on the heap then doing delete(vertex) but then the polygon rendered awkwardly. I'm not sure what to do. Thanks

• Calling C++ function from C.

- by claws
I know this. Calling C function from C++: If my application was in C++ and I had to call functions from a library written in C. Then I would have used //main.cpp extern "C" void C_library_function(int x, int y);//prototype C_library_function(2,4);// directly using it. This wouldn't mangle the name C_library_function and linker would find the same name in its input *.lib files and problem is solved. Calling C++ function from C??? But here I'm extending a large application which is written in C and I need to use a library which is written in C++. Name mangling of C++ is causing trouble here. Well I cannot use C++ compiler over my C project because thats breaking lot of other stuff. What is the way out? By the way I'm using MSVC
