• Active Directory with nodes in multiple IP Addresses

  I have written some code to fetch user information from an Active Directory Server. Suppose the Active Directory Server has nodes, each of which is another Active Directory Installation in a different geographic location. Eg: one AD server in US and another in Australia with a root AD Server in US with the former two as nodes. Would the filter queries I write for searching users across geographic locations work if I run them on the root AD server ?. The query I use is (|(objectClass=user)(objectClass=person)(objectClass=inetOrgPerson)) I cannot actually test this scenario but need to know the what will happen here.

• MSDN Live 2010 &ndash; Delivered : 24 sessions (4 x 6) on Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server

  We (Mikael Nitell and me) got a whole track on the Norwegian MSDN Live tour this year.  We did these as a pair, and covered 4 cities over 4 days, 6 sessions per day, taking 8 hours to come through it.  The Islandic volcano made the travels a bit rough, but we managed 6 flights out of 8. The first one had to go by van instead, 7-8 hour drive each way together with other MSDN Live presenters – a memorable tour! Oslo was the absolute top point.  We had to change hall to a bigger one. People were crowding, and even the big hall was packed!  The presentations were mostly based on demos, but we had a few slides as well.  They have been uploaded to my SkyDrive.  Info to aliens – some of the text may be Norwegian. These entries will also contain stuff we had to remove from the actual presentations due to the time constraints. We managed to create recordings of two of the sessions, which will be uploaded to Channel 9 by Microsoft, afaik.   I will update this blog with information about exact locations when that is done. • AutoVue for Agile 20.2.2 Now Available!!

  We are happy to announce that AutoVue for Agile 20.2.2 is now available via the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud.   AutoVue for Agile 20.2.2 is a minor release within the 20.2 product family that is specifically targeted for users of Agile PLM 9. AutoVue 20.2.2 brings a number of improvements, including support for SolidWorks 2013, AutoCAD and Inventor 2014, SolidEdge ST5, and Cadence Allegro 16.6.   It also includes support for Adobe Illustrator CS4 and up.   Another improvement involves bringing our support for Oracle Linux and Java Virtual Machine versions in-line with Agile's support. Please see our previous post (https://blogs.oracle.com/enterprisevisualization/entry/autovue_20_2_2_is) for more details on the specifics introduced in AutoVue 20.2.2. • If I implement a web-service, how do I respond to POST requests with JSON?

  I have to make a rather complex system for my diploma work. Logically it will consist of the following components: Database Web-service Management with web interface Client iOS application that will consume web-service I decided to implement all the first three components under .NET. Firstly I will create a database depending on the information load - this is clear. But then I need a web-service that will return data in JSON format for iOS clients to consume - that's obvious and not that hard to implement. For this I will use WCF technology. Now I have a question, if I implement the web-service, how will I be able to respond to POST requests with JSON? It probably involves WCF JSON or something related? But I also need some web pages as admin part, so will this web-application be able to consume my centralized web-services as well or I should develop it separately? I just want my web service to act like a set of controllers. There is a related question here but this doesn't quite reflect my question.

Serialization formats - no matter which one you use, they are all expensive. Measure. Don’t use pickle. Not a good choice. Found protocol buffers slow. • Kids and programming: ScratchKara

  Ever now and then I kept wondering how to share with my kids the excitement of creating something with your computer. Of course, today this is a bit more difficult, as they have seen 3D animation games and well-edited websites. I guess that's why they weren't all that hyped when I found my first computer model at our local recycling facilities (an 8-bit Laser VZ-200 with rubber keys). When I finally got it up and running with an old analog TV set they finally asked whether we could play soccer on it. Needless to say that my showing them how it remembers some BASIC commands and lists and executes them did not make any impression. So the question is for real: How do you get today's kids excited about programming? And just recently I looked again for environments that allow even young kids (mine are 7 and 9 years old now) to do something and have fun. Obviously any real, text-oriented programming language wouldn't work well. To cut it short: Something really nice was built by University of Oldenburg: ScratchKara. It is the perfect mixture of Kara, a simulation of a little ladybug and Scratch, an authoring environment from MIT. ScratchKara allows kids to initially simply explore how the bug moves and turns by pressing the action buttons, then move towards sequencing commands through drag & drop, and eventually end up building algorithms with procedures and functions. Even through it is built for kids and beginners, the environment comes with debugging and refactoring, which I found more than amazing. My kids love it and I have to admit I keep thinking about how to solve a bit more advanced problems with this language, which does not allow you to store any state information (other than your call stack). Yes, I am hooked, too... Once the language is understood you can then move to one of the original Kara versions, where you can define the bug's behavior through finite statemachines, Turing tables, Java and other textual languages. And from there, anything is possible.

• SSRS 2005 report manager link not coming up

  On my SQL Server 2005 installation. I am able to view the report server URL but I am unable to logon to the report manager URL. "http://servername/reports" I don't get any error message at all. Only thing is the page never loads and is in a hanged state. From the reporting services log folder, I am unable to see any useful messages getting logged in the log file. I also checked the IIS server logs and didn't get any useful information either. Have anyone of you experienced this before? Is there any way to fix this problem, please share your thoughts.

• Detect damage done by virus

  Hey, this morning after I went to college a virus infected my pc without any user interaction at my end. When I came home my computer was completely frozen and infected with lots of trojans. I have not typed anything important since returning so keys cannot be logged. However I want to know exactly when my computer crashed from the time of infection to see what could potentially be done remotely by a hacker. The virus my pc was diagonosed with was "fakespypro" http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Win32%2fFakeSpypro on a fully updated windows 7 installation with firewall enabled. My computer was connected to an internal dorm room network, so probably that has had to do something with it. Any further information about how I could backtrace this virus infection or ways to discover what data might be stolen would be greatly appriciated.

• VGA no signal on LCD monitor attached to laptop

  I bought a new Asus vh242h LCD monitor for use with my lenevo T60 laptop running XP professional. Display info under control panel says "Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family". I am connecting via VGA. When I connect the monitor I get "VGA no signal" and the monitor screen stays blank. I have selected the monitor as the display device on the laptop. The information on the monitor displays the correct screen resolution from the laptop, so the monitor is communicating in some way with the laptop. I've successfully tried the monitor with my Dell inspirion 1525 running Windows Vista. I've change the VGA cable to one I know works. Tried different resolutions. I cannot find and specific drivers on the internet for this monitor, so I assume it should work with Plug and Play. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

• 32bit Application Memory Usage on 64bit Windows 7

  I have an early 2012 Macbook Pro with and Intel I7 processor and 16 gigs RAM running Windows 7 Professional 64bit via Bootcamp. I work in Geographical Information Systems as a programmer so most of the applications I am running are 32bit Applications, but tend to use a lot of resources (i.e. ArcGIS, SQL Server Express, Visual Studio, etc.). I have been noticing that when I have multiple instances of either the same 32bit application or different 32bit applications and they are all working on hefty processing tasks, I am still only topping out at about 30% memory use. I understand 32bit applications are limited to less than 4gb RAM, but I assumed that one instance could use its own 4gb while another instance could use another 4gb to take full advantage of all the memory I have installed. Can anyone explain how this works and how I can get my applications to take advantage of all my memory via running multiple instances?

• HTTP Protocal

  I have worked with the HTTP protocal for about ten years now and I have found it to be incredibly usefull for transfering data espicaly for remote systems and regardless of the network enviroment. Prior to the existance of web services, developers use to use HTTP to screen scrap data off of web pages in order to interact with remote systems, and then process the data as they needed. I use to use the HTTPWebRequest and HTTPWebRespones classes in order to screen scrap data from various sites that had information I needed to use if no web service was avalible. This allowed me to call just about any webpage and grab all of the content on the page. Below is piece of a web spider that I build about 5-7 years ago. • How do I boot a virtual machine image from my network?

  I have many machines which require the same configurations. My goal is to boot them all from the network and load a virtual machine. It would be wonderful to have one image for all of our customer service machines. That way, I could load the virtual image, perform updates, and know the next time they boot up they will have all the changes. Ideally, the machines would store the image locally and only download a new image if there has been a change. With all the information out there on "desktop virtualization", "PXE booting", and "virtual machines", I feel lost. I have been reading for hours and feel like I have only just scratched the surface. I would like to do this using open source or free software. Any suggestions?

• Ubuntu 12.04 does not suspend with proprietary driver for Radeon 6800

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 (though these issues have existed in previous releases too) and have a Radeon 6800 graphics card. I've run into issues with the open-source driver (the system would randomly hang when shutting down) so I switched to the proprietary driver (I compiled it myself using these instructions), but I am having new problems now. The main issue is that when I go into sleep mode, about 50-75% of the time, the screen goes black but the monitor does not actually shut off, and I can hear that the fans/hard drive are not suspending either. I can't get the computer to wake up (Ctrl+Alt+F1,2,3,etc. does not work), and I always end up force shutting down with the power button. I'd really appreciate help! • Get active network interface on Windows

  I'm developing an application that provides a UI to windump, the packet sniffer. Windump has a "-D" parameter that lists all network interfaces it can find, and then you can specify which interface to listen on. However, I'd like to avoid forcing the user to manually configure which interface to listen on. On Unix, I can obtain the right network interface (en0, en1, etc.) via a call to ifconfig and some parsing of the output, but I cannot locate any equivalent Windows API or command that can yield similar information--ipconfig doesn't seem to obtain this data. Can anyone suggest either a Windows command-line tool or an API that can be called via VBScript to obtain this data so that I don't have to present the user with a dialog in my GUI telling them to select the right interface?

  Quick resolution: Give full permission to AUTHENTICATED USERS in following folders. a) ORACLE_HOME b) Program Files\ORACLE   Check your PATH. You might have installed different clients in your system and your .NET application is pointing to a home with inappoperiate client. What your .NET application should load is OCI.DLL with File version more than 8.1.7. According to the MSDN document Oracle and ADO.NET:   "The .NET Framework Data Provider for Oracle provides access to an Oracle database using the Oracle Call Interface (OCI) as provided by Oracle Client software. The functionality of the data provider is designed to be similar to that of the .NET Framework data providers for SQL Server, OLE DB, and ODBC. "     The MSDN document System Requirements (Oracle) says: "The .NET Framework Data Provider for Oracle requires Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.6 or later. MDAC 2.8 SP1 is recommended. You must also have Oracle 8i Release 3 (8.1.7) Client or later installed. "   Both the .NET Framework Data Provider for Oracle and Oracle Data Provider for .NET are data providers to access Oracle database. The former ships with .NET Framework and requires Oracle client version 8.1.7 or above. The latter is provided by Oracle company and requires Oracle client version 9.2 or later.     The Oracle Data Provider for .NET (ODP.NET) features optimized ADO.NET data access to the Oracle database. • How to Configure Microsoft Word 2013 to Connect to Geekswithblogs

  The first step in this process is to open Word 2013. Once there, you will have the different templates available. You will select Blog Post.  Once the template for Blog Post opens, you will have a dialog popup with the option to Register a Blog Account. And click on Register Now.  The next part of the dialog will prompt you to provide the New Blog Account details, starting with the type of Blog you have (SharePoint, WordPress, TypePad and others are listed). In our case for GeeksWithBlogs, we will select Other.  Now come the juicy details! Under the New Account dialog, you will have the API set to MetaWebLog.Then provide the Blog Post URL, this needs to be http://geekswithblogs.net/<your-account>/services/metablogapi.aspx (remember to change the <your-account> part with your info).Then, enter your User Name and Password, click OK and you should be set (you will receive a dialog letting you know information will be transferred).  Hope it works for you!

• Outgoing mail from linux not being delivered

  I can't seem to send mail through my php scripts or through the linux console on my Centos 5.5 LAMP server, when the email is addressed to go to a domain that is hosted by my box. I think it is something to do with the email routing internally, or the DNS servers that the box uses not reporting the correct MX records. Basically my box doesn't host any mail, it's all hosted on google apps. My name servers are hosted by a 3rd party provider and I am using webmin. Webmin doesn't recognise the settings on the 3rd party provider. I'm unsure how to fix this. Previously when I had this problem on a cpanel server, I would edit the remotedomains and localdomains files, moving domains from one file to another and it would fix the problem. What information do I need to provide for anyone to work out what the issue is? Thanks

  I can't install xojo. When I click install in the software center it's not progressing. But then again I found myself at the beginning of the problem.STUCK at '0% [Working]'. 'Xojo' is the only application that I can't install.Any explanation why is it like that?

• Google affecting my SERP Rank?

Site Description: Health Articles Blog Site Age: 1.5 years A short history: When I started my website, the few things in my mind when posting content were at-least 500 words on each page and writing of all the articles with to the point information. I didn't go really fast with it which is why I only have about 15 articles in 1.5 years. The SEO strategy was more simple. I shared links through Social Marketing websites and some Article Sharing websites after which I could see my website's rankings in top 5 SERP results. I ranked good enough for about 8 months continuously but didn't keep updating content due to which there were some 3 rough months when no content was posted due to some personal work. The SERPS dropped to 2nd page in April and almost started disappearing in May. I asked a lot of people about it and most came up with the reason of "no updates to site" so I started updating my site again since the day, November has almost started and I see no signs of my website's ranking. Another important point is that when I post a new article, and do a title search in Google, I see it ranks good enough for the first 10 hours and then disappears. What could be wrong here?

• Creating Parent-Child Relationships in SSRS

  As I have been working on SQL Server Reporting Services reports the last couple of weeks I ran into a scenario where I needed to present a parent-child data layout.  It is rare that I have seen a report that was a simple tabular or matrix format and this report continued that trend.  I found that the processes for developing complex SSRS reports aren’t as commonly described as I would have thought.  Below I will layout the process that I went through to create a solution. I started with a List control which will contain the layout of the master (parent) information.  This allows for a main repeating report part.  The dataset for this report should include the data elements needed to be passed to the subreport as parameters.  As you can see the layout is simply text boxes that are bound to the dataset. The next step is to set a row group on the List row.  When the dialog appears select the field that you wish to group your report by.  A good example in this case would be the employee name or ID. Create a second report which becomes the subreport.  The example below has a matrix control.  Create the report as you would any parameter driven document by parameterizing the dataset. Add the subreport to the main report inside the row of the List control.  This can be accomplished by either dragging the report from the solution explorer or inserting a Subreport control and then setting the report name property. The last step is to set the parameters on the subreport.  In this case the subreport has EmpId and ReportYear as parameters.  While some of the documentation on this states that the dialog will automatically detect the child parameters, but this has not been my experience.  You must make sure that the names match exactly.  Tie the name of the parameter to either a field in the dataset or a parameter of the parent report. del.icio.us Tags: SQL Server Reporting Services,SSRS,SQL Server,Subreports

• Suspend/resume issue hp envy m6

  :) I just installed Ubuntu 13.10 on my HP envy m6. When I press the "power" button and select to suspend, it looks like it goes to sleep (power light flashing, as expected). When I press the power button to wake it (or anything else), it stops flashing and goes solid (as it should) but the screen is black. I tried CTRL+ALT+F1 but nothing seems to happen. Is there something I can do to get Ubuntu to resume from suspend? EDIT: I tried getting any updates for Ubuntu as well as updating my BIOS. Neither seems to have any effect. EDIT: Tried the 2nd script from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS suspend fix and it seemed to have no effect. Tried the 1st script and now I can't seem to suspend at all - Ubuntu seems to try to suspend and then immediately goes to the password prompt. With some combination of things I seem to be able to get a new crash, though, involving wpa_supplicant. I allowed it to submit feedback. My WiFi seems to be working fine (I assume this is what WPA is). EDIT: I know this is 'askubuntu', but I did try latest Linux Mint / Cinnamon. Results were exactly the same (black screen, power light solid after waking up - just as before, I can make it reboot by mashing CTRL+ALT+DEL but CTRL+ALT+F1/etc. doesn't work). Trying Ubuntu 12.04 next. EDIT: Ubuntu 12.04 WORKS! At least it seems to with a quick test. Came right back up after suspend. If I don't have any other problems and no answers are suggested, I'll make my own answer and accept it. Maybe someone can use this information to help troubleshoot the real issue. Would be nice to be on the latest version... but suspend would've been a deal-breaker for me. Hope this info helps someone.
