  • Browser: Randomly Opens Pages in New Windows Without Reason?

    This is a very strange thing I've noticed on my computer and past computers over this past year or more. I know when page are meant to open in a new Window and know which settings to use on my browser for this. But on both my browsers Chrome and Firefox, I have this really strange issue. I'm starting to think it's a hacker. When I right click links and select Open Link in New Tab, sometimes they will randomly open in a new window and today it is happening a lot. Like lots and lots. I'm getting really creeped out by it and YES I understand when a link opens in a new window and when it isn't supposed to. And none of these links are meant to open in a new Window. Let me give you an example: I searched Google about my issue and clicked on the result that I thought good. It opened in a new tab but half way through loading in new tab it opens into a new window. Recently, I decided to record my screen and while recording my screen using Camtasia, the issue stops. When I stop recording it starts again, as if it's a human operated issue. VERY strange. This has been going on for months on my old and new computer and on both Firefox and Chrome. Is there something I can do to fix this intermittent problem?

  • how to throttle http requests on a linux machine?

    EDIT: here is the summery: i need to reduce max connections preferably system wide on Ubuntu 11.04 but at least within Google Chrome. i do not need or want to throttle bandwidth, Verizon seems to only care about the number of connections so that is all i want to change. also, i don't want to use firefox unless i have to, i have three other machines all using chrome and synced and i just prefer it over firefox. i use tethering for my home internet connection via my verizon cell phone. without paying for it. this works just fine for streaming netflix via my nintendo wii and pretty much every other conceivable use ive had for it. except, during heavy usage with multiple tabs open on my laptop, the network connection on my phone will just turn off, then on again, then off, but it never fully connects. i think, based on this and other questions that this is caused by verizon getting too many http requests from my phone. is there some software, script, setting or otherwise that would allow me to throttle my requests to say, 5 or 10 or whatever it turns out is 1 less than verizon is looking for, so that my cell's network connection is not lost? i would far prefer a slow down rather than complete shut off of my internet connection. i am almost certain is from quantity of requests and not related to data, because, as i mentioned, netflix will run all day without a hitch, and that uses more data than anything else i would be doing. if i had a router i am pretty sure there are settings i could easily change to only allow so many requests at a time ... but in this case, my phone is my router, so no settings. im using ubuntu 11.04 on my netbook with an htc incredible on verizon (not that the phone details are relevant) i have been trying to figure this out for quite some time, currently the only fix is ensure that all requests are stopped and then sometimes it works again, other times i have to manually turn my 3g service off and then back on. thank you so much for any assistance!

  • Some pages begin to load and stop on Chrome

    I'm using Chrome (Version 22.0.1229.94). About 20% of pages simply stop loading after a second or two. Sometimes, I'm able to click an early link after a second or third reload. If I attempt to close the page, it continues to hang for a few (10-30) additional seconds, then closes. However, if I switch to other tabs, it works just fine. If I don't change tabs and wait long enough, it says that there's something on the page that's taking too long to run and offers to let me kill it. Only a select number of sites fail to load, and they do so consistently. None of the stackexchange sites or google fail, but others like realclearpolitics and wowwiki do. I visit those sites every day, and this is the first time it has failed like this. If it were just one site, I would say someone messed something up in their deployment. But it seems incredibly peculiar that suddenly, half a dozen popular sites all mysteriously have the same symptoms. If I attempt to load the pages in Firefox or IE9, they load just fine. Nothing new has been installed, regarding Chrome or otherwise. Antivirus reports no abnormalities. System is regularly patched. Restarting both chrome and the computer have had no effect.

  • A quick tip for those working with the Windows Phone 7 AD SDK.

    One thing that I’ve noticed in several apps in the Windows Phone 7 marketplace is the ad chopping off on the right hand side. I decided that my next Windows Phone 7 app will be ad supported so why not sign up for the Advertising SDK and investigate this issue. *Note: If you want to see this in an actual app then download the free app called “Road Rage”. So here is an example of what I am talking about: You will notice that the right hand side of the AD is chopped off using the default ad banner. You can see the border on the left hand side clearly. So, what exactly is going on? Let’s take a look at this in the designer. From this image we can see it clearer, the margin of the grid that the ad is contained in needs to be removed. By default, the ContentPanel in a Windows Phone Page has a margin already set on it. See below for an example of this: <!--ContentPanel - place additional content here--> <Grid x:Name="ContentPanel" Grid.Row="1" Margin="12,0,12,0"> </Grid> If you simply remove that margin then your ad will display properly as shown below. It’s strange that I’ve seen this in multiple WP7 applications in the marketplace. If you are trying to make money off Ads, you would probably want to make sure the full ad is displayed.     If I run an audit on my sites with Google Chrome, I get this message in the Leverage browser caching section: The following resources are missing a cache expiration. Resources that do not specify an expiration may not be cached by browsers: A list of all the pictures follows. I get a similar notice in Leverage proxy caching: Consider adding a "Cache-Control: public" header to the following resources: Apart from pictures, I also get a notice about HTML, CSS and JavaScript files: The following resources are explicitly non-cacheable. Consider making them cacheable if possible: Its funny because I've worked hard to cache all static contents (except for pictures, where I just left Apache's default settings). Firefox does indeed store all these items in cache. Is there anything I should improve in my HTTP headers? Here's the complete header set of some items as loaded after removing the browser caché. Pictures use default settings I didn't really check before, the rest should be cachéd for three hours. I can set headers with both .htaccess and PHP.   • Nested WHILE loops not acting as expected - Javascript / Google Apps Script

    I've got a function that isn't acting as intended. Before I continue, I'd like preface this with the fact that I normally program in Mathematica and have been tasked with porting over a Mathematica function (that I wrote) to JavaScript so that it can be used in a Google Docs spreadsheet. I have about 3 hours of JavaScript experience... The entire (small) project is calculating the Gross Die per Wafer, given a wafer and die size (among other inputs). The part that isn't working is where I check to see if any corner of the die is outside of the effective radius, Reff. The function takes a list of X and Y coordinates which, when combined, create the individual XY coord of the center of the die. That is then put into a separate function "maxDistance" that calculates the distance of each of the 4 corners and returns the max. This max value is checked against Reff. Edit #2: Per showi, I've changed WHILE loops to FOR loops and replaced <= with <. Still not the right answer. It did clean things up a bit though... Edit #3: What I'm essentially trying to do is take [a,b] and [a,b,c] and return [[a,a],[a,b],[a,c],[b,a],[b,b],[b,c]]

  • IntellIJ editor doesn't appear

    I updated my IntellIJ install to the latest version (11.1.4) and now the Editor window doesn't appear. Double-clicking on the file, jump-to-source, nothing happens. No error message, it just doesn't appear. If I double-click on an xml layout file the preview window works, but no Editor window. Have installed and reinstalled; went back to an earlier version and it doesn't work there either. I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Update: Editor works if I create a new project.   • Updating entity fields in app engine development server

    I recently tried updating a field in one of my entities on the app engine local dev server via the sdk console. It appeared to have updated just fine (a simple float). However, when I followed up with a query on the entity, I received an exception: "Items in the mSomeList list must all be Key instances". mSomeList is just another list field I have in that entity, not the one I modified. Is there any reason manually changing a field would adversely throw something off such that the server gets confused? Is this a known bug? I wrote an http handler to alter the field through server code and it works fine if I take that approach. Update: (adding details) I am using the python google app engine server. Basically if I go into the Google App Engine Launcher and press the SDK Console button, then go into one of my entities and edit a field that is a float (i.e. change it from 0 to 3.5, for instance), I get the "Items in the mMyList list must all be Key instance" suddenly when I query the entity like this: query = DataModels.RegionData.gql("WHERE mRegion = :1", region) entry = query.get() the RegionData entity is what has the mMyList member. As mentioned previously, if I do not manually change the field but rather do so through server code, i.e. query = DataModels.RegionData.gql("WHERE mRegion = :1", region) entry = query.get() entry.mMyFloat = 3.5 entry.put() Then it works.

  • Problems with i18n using django translation on App-Engine with Korean and Hindi

    I've got a setup based on the post here, and it works perfectly. Adding more languages to the mix, it recognises them fine, except for Korean (ko) and Hindi (hi). Chinese/Japanese/Hebrew are all fine, so nothing to do with encodings/charsets I don't think. Taking a look into the django code inside the app-engine SDK, I notice that all the languages that I'm using except for ko and hi are ones that ship with django - in the default settings.py and inside the locale folder they are missing. If I copy one of the locale folders inside the /usr/local/google_appengine/lib/django[...]/conf/locale and rename it to be 'ko', then it starts working in my app, but I won't be able to replicate this modification when I deploy to app-engine, so need a bit of help understanding what I might be doing wrong. my settings.py is definitely being taken into account, as if I remove languages from there then they stop working (as they should). If I copied the django modules into my app, under 'lib' there say, could I use those instead of the ones app-engine tries to use, maybe? I'm brand new to python/django/app-engine, and developing on a Mac with Leopard, if that makes any difference. I have the latest app-engine SDK as of tuesday.
