• Is it possible to modify ASP.NET to no longer require runat="server"?

  I know why runat="server" is currently required (ASP.NET why runat="server"), but the consensus is that it should not be required if you incorporate a simple default into the design (I agree of course). Would it be possible to modify, extend, decompile and recreate, intercept or otherwise change the behavior of how ASP.NET parses ASPX and ASCX files so that runat="server" would no longer be required? For instance, I assume that a version of Mono could be branched to accomplish this goal. In case specific requirements are helpful, the following highlights one design: During parsing, when configured namespace tags are encountered (such as "asp"), default the element's runat property to "server" During parsing, when configured namespace tags are encountered (such as "asp"), if the element's runat property value is available, then that value should be used in place of the default New page-level setting introduced (can be set in the page directive or web.config) that specifies the default runat value for a specific namespace tag

• Is "Systems Designer" the job title that best describes what I do? [closed]

  After having worked as Java developer for almost 3 years in the same company that I currently work at, I moved to a new position associated with the development of the same application. I’m in this new position for more than 1 year now. My official job title is Systems Designer, but I’m not sure this is a title that expresses well what I do. So my question here is what would be the most appropriate job title for me? I see this question as important for my career development. After all, I should be able to explain in one word what I do. And it’s no longer “Java Developer”. Well, in more than one word, this is what I do: The business analysts gather requirements / business problems to be solved with the clients and then discuss these requirements with me. Given the requirements, I design the high level solutions to be implemented in our system (e.g. a new screen on the client application, modifications to existing reports, extension to the XML export format of some objects, etc). I base my decision on the current capabilities of the system, the overall impact that the solutions would have on the system and the estimated effort to implement them (as I was a developer of this same application for almost 3 years before I moved to this position, I’m confident in my estimates). The solutions are discussed iteratively with the business analysts until we agree that they are good. The outcome of this analysis is what we call the “requirements design” document, which is written by me, shared with clients for approval and then also with the team that is going to implement the solutions and test them. Note that there are a few problems that I need to find a solution for that are non-functional. If the users are unhappy with the performance of a certain tool, I will investigate what can be done to speed it up. I will do some research – often based in the Java code itself - to identify possibilities of optimizations. But in this new position I no longer code, the main outcome of my work is really the “requirements design”. Is “Systems Designer” really the most appropriate job title?

It's ok to accept. So addListener will hold a function body containing 'apply'. But what I don't understand, when addListener is called, what kind of parameters it is going to have? particularly _method and args will always be uninitialized?

• Typed DefaultListModel to avoid casting

  Is there a way in java to have a ListModel that only accepts a certain type? What I'm looking for is something like DefaultListModel<String> oder TypedListModel<String>, because the DefaultListModel only implements addElement(Object obj) and get(int index) which returns Object of course. That way I always have to cast from Object to e.g. String and there is no guarantee that there are only strings in my model, even though I'd like to enforce that. Is this a flaw or am I using list models the wrong way?

The design which I have decided is: When cashier selects payment mode as 'Check' or 'Credit Card' open a pop-up. From pop-up, I am calling an Applet through JNLP which implements JPOS API to communicate with POS devices at client machine. When cashier swipes or inserts check, Applet class read them and send the information back to the pop-up window. Pop up window call the parent window, populate all the required field and close the pop-up.

• What are Android different screens dimensions in dp for different screens (e.g. xlarge = 960dp x 720dp)?

  in this link: Range of screens supported, Android team mentioned that: As you design your UI for different screen sizes, you'll discover that each design requires a minimum amount of space. So, each generalized screen size above has an associated minimum resolution that's defined by the system. These minimum sizes are in "dp" units—the same units you should use when defining your layouts—which allows the system to avoid worrying about changes in screen density. xlarge screens are at least 960dp x 720dp large screens are at least 640dp x 480dp normal screens are at least 470dp x 320dp small screens are at least 426dp x 320dp So, If I want to support all Android screens, can I create images, for full screen view, in those dimensions and that will be sufficient condition to support all available screens? or they are just the minimum sizes, and I need other dimensions? • Using XAML + designer to edit Plain Old CLR Objects?

  I want to write a POCO in XAML, and use a DataTemplate to display that object in the GUI at runtime. So far, so good; I know how to do all that. Since I'll already have a DataTemplate that can transform my POCO into a WPF visual tree, is there any way to get the Visual Studio designer to play along, and have the Design View show me the POCO+DataTemplate's resulting GUI, as I edit the POCO's XAML? (Obviously the designer wouldn't know how to edit the "design view"; I wouldn't expect the Toolbox or click-and-drag to work on the design surface. That's fine -- I just want to see a preview as I edit.) If you're curious, the POCOs in question would be level maps for a game. (At this point, I'm not planning to ship an end-user map editor, so I'll be doing all the editing myself in Visual Studio.) So the XAML isn't WPF GUI objects like Window and UserControl, but it's still not something where I would want to blindly bang out some XAML and hope for the best. I want to see what I'm doing (the GUI map) as I'm doing it. If I try to make a XAML file whose root is my map object, the designer shows "Intentionally Left Blank - The document root element is not supported by the visual designer." It does this even if I've defined a DataTemplate in App.xaml's <Application.Resources>. But I know the designer can show my POCO, when it's inside a WPF object. One possible way of accomplishing what I want would be to have a ScratchUserControl that just contains a ContentPresenter, and write my POCO XAML inside that ContentPresenter's Content property, e.g.: <UserControl ...> <ContentPresenter> <ContentPresenter.Content> <Maps:Map .../> </ContentPresenter.Content> </ContentPresenter> </UserControl> But then I would have to be sure to copy the content back out into its own file when I was done editing, which seems tedious and error-prone, and I don't like tedious and error-prone. And since I can preview my XAML this way, isn't there some way to do it without the UserControl?

  Hi all I wonder what is the commonly used method and protocol for a, say, smartphone application to send its data to a web application (where these data should be proceeded and stored). My naive beginner's approach would be something like this: From my smartphone app, use a framework encoding my data object into a json object Send this object via http to a listener addressed by a dedicated URL On the server side, use a JSON parser and store it via ORM etc. into a database Questions: Is this too naive? 2a.   I want to pass constant references to functions in delphi, so I am sure that the referenced object won't change and to save time and memory. So I want to declare a function like function foo(var const Value : Bar) : Boolean; however this is not allowed. I thought constant values would be automatically sent as references. However I found out that it is not the case (getting the address of an object before sending it to the function gives me $12F50C and the address of the same object inside the function is $12F564) What can I do to send constant references?

  This is about formatting the messages for logging so as to subsequently be able to parse them relatively easily esp. given the extensive logging required in financial apps Typically a line in the log file is of the form TimeStamp: Module/Function: where the log string contains whatever you choose, typically you'd have some key=value paradigm or even johnny5 key {value} etc. A regex search through the log file might easily pick up Module/Function but enforcing and maintaing consistency on the log string itself for every developer on the team is often a pain The logging api's are typically ILog.LogInfo(string text, params object[] args) ILog.LogWarning(string text, params object[] args) ILog.LogError(string text, params object[] args) Looking for opinions on better logging api's to format the log messages where a regex search can be performed for Module/Function = Basket/AddItem TokenA = Value1 and TokenB = Value2 etc. without going over every developer's every logging call

• Testing a (big) collection retrieved from a db

  I'm currently doing integration testing on a live database and I have the following sql statement: var date = DateTime.Parse("01-01-2010 20:30:00"); var result = datacontext.Repository<IObject>().Where(r => r.DateTime > date).First(); Assert.IsFalse(result.Finished); I need to test if the results retrieved from the statement, where the given date is less then the date of the object, have Finished set to False. I do not know how many results I get back and currently I'm getting the first object of the list and check if that object has Finished set to false. I know testing only the first item of the list is not valid testing, as a solution for that I could iterate through the list and check all items on Finished, but putting logic in a Test is kinda going against the concept of writing 'good' tests. So my question is: Does anyone have a good solution of how to properly test the results of this list?

  So, I have this code fragment: int * iPtr ; int * jPtr ; int i = 5, k = 7; iPtr = &i; jPtr = iPtr ; I have just started learning about pointers, and need to get some doubts cleared. is jPtr now essentially also pointing at i? I know I can change the value of i by using *iPtr, but how can I change the value of the object being pointed to by jPtr? How will changing the object being pointed to by jPtr affect the value of the object pointed to by iPtr, and i ?

• Why do people still use C these days? [closed]

  C++ is clearly a far superior language than C, since it has many features that C lacks (although, C++'s object model isn't as ideal as say C#'s). With the coming off the new C++0x standard, why hasn't C been phased out to obscurity? C++ has been around for so long, since the '80s. The Linux kernel has already been ported to C++ with negligible performance differences. I believe, with no evidence, that larger program structures benefit in performance if written in C++ than in C, if only because of object interaction. Don't get me started on "objects-in-C!" libraries, which are all a terrible hack. (Not that C++'s object model is the most ideal, but it is almost up to snuff with C# using common ad-hoc techniques.)

  Hi, In my website i have implemented custom session values. In which, on log on i set the session value to some object. This object is used to extract user specific data from db. now the problem is If user logs in with : test1.somesite.com and logs off and again logs in with: test2.somesite.com that user is still receiving the data from object specific to test1.somesite.com. the point is whichever site user frist logs in with the second time if he logs in with anathor subdomain he is always getting the data from previous sub domain login. on log out from specific domain i cleared all the sessions(tried everything): by putting HttpContext.session["UserDetail"] = null;, HttpContext.Session.Abandon() and also HttpContext.Session.Clear(); but nothing seems to work any help please

• Obtaining reference to Class instance by string name - VB.NET

  Is it possible using Reflection or some other method to obtain a reference to a specific class instance from the name of that class instance? For example the framework for the applications i develop heavily uses public class instances such as: Public bMyreference as MyReference = new MyReference Then throughout the application bMyReference is used by custom controls and code. One of the properties of the custom controls is the "FieldName" which references a Property in these class instances (bMyReference.MyField) as a string. What i would like to be able to do is analyze this string "bMyReference.MyField" and then refer back to the actual Instance/Property. In VB6 I would use an EVAL or something simular to convert the string to an actual object but this obviously doesn't work in VB.net What I'm picturing is something like this Dim FieldName as String = MyControl.FieldName ' sets FielName to bMyReference.MyField Dim FieldObject() as String = FieldName.Split(".") • How does formatting works with a PowerShell function that returns a set of elements?

But even if only 8 columns are shown, there are plenty of other properties (as foo | gm is showing). What is causing this function to show only this 8 properties? I'm actually trying to build a similar function that is returning complex objects from a 3rd party .Net library. The library is flatting a 2 level hierarchy of objects : function Actual { $someDotnetObject.ACollectionProperty.ASecondLevelCollection | % { $_ } } This method is dumping the objects in a list form (one line per property). How can I control what is displayed, keeping the actual object available? • How to analyse contents of binary serialization stream?

  I'm using binary serialization (BinaryFormatter) as a temporary mechanism to store state information in a file for a relatively complex (game) object structure; the files are coming out much larger than I expect, and my data structure includes recursive references - so I'm wondering whether the BinaryFormatter is actually storing multiple copies of the same objects, or whether my basic "number of objects and values I should have" arithmentic is way off-base, or where else the excessive size is coming from. Searching on stack overflow I was able to find the specification for Microsoft's binary remoting format: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc236844(PROT.10).aspx What I can't find is any existing viewer that enables you to "peek" into the contents of a binaryformatter output file - get object counts and total bytes for different object types in the file, etc; I feel like this must be my "google-fu" failing me (what little I have) - can anyone help? This must have been done before, right??

• DDD: Trying to code sorting and filtering as it pertains to Poco, Repository, DTO, and DAO using C#?

  I get a list of items from my Repository. Now I need to sort and filter them, which I believe would be done in the Repository for efficiency. I think there would be two ways of doing this in a DDD way: Send a filter and a sort object full of conditions to the Repository (What is this called)? Repository result would produce an object with .filter and .sort methods? (This wouldn't be a POJO/POCO because it contains more than one object?). So is the answer 1, 2, or other? Could you explain why? I am leaning toward #1 because the Repository would be able to only send the data I want (or will #2 be able to delay accessing data like a LazyList?) A code example (or website link) would be very helpful. • WPF: DataGrid Custom. ColumnDesign with my own classes

  Hi, iam looking for a datagrid which contains objects from my class. class user { string name; int ID; ... } i tried AutoGenerateColumns = true. this will add columns (name, ID, ... like the properties of my class) but i want a different design. not all attributes from the object shold be shown and the columnheader shouldn't be generated from the variablenames... if i build a custom. column-design, i cant add my objects / they will not be displayed. is it possible to define my own columns according to my objects/class. i read about databindings, but i have no idea how i can bind objects/classes in WPF. (in Visual Studio i cant choose my class as datacontext)
