  • OTN Virtual Developer Day for WebLogic Server and WebLogic Developer Broadcasts

    - by mike.lehmann
To further move the new year of 2011 underway for WebLogic Server, quite a series of hands on technical online events and broadcasts are about to get underway from the WebLogic team. The first is Virtual Developer Day: Oracle WebLogic Server which is an online event that combines hands on labs with WebLogic Server through a series of Virtual Box images. This event will cover things like the new Java EE 6 capabilities one can use on WebLogic Server, using Maven and Hudson with WebLogic Server, developing with Web services on WebLogic Server and even upgrading from Oracle Application Server. Very technical, very hands on. And its global - multiple geographies covered.  Nice! James Bayer has put out a full agenda for this on his blog as well as links on how to register. The second is a 5 week long weekly technical broadcast under the umbrella of Accelerate Your Development with Oracle WebLogic Suite walking through topics like working with JPA, designing distributed caching strategies with WebLogic Server, advanced JMS topics and UI topics like JQuery as well restful Web services with Jersey and JAX-RS.  Again in James' blog the full agenda is available to check out if it is interesting for you to attend including a brief video introduction outlining in a bit more detail exactly what will be covered. Hopefully between these two events and the release of WebLogic Server 10.3.4 earlier in January, we are kicking off 2011 in a good fashion.  Looking forward to sharing more as we go forward in 2011.

  • Vehicle: Boat accelerating and turning in Unity

    - by Emilios S.
I'm trying to make a player-controllable boat in Unity and I'm running into problems with my code. 1) I want to make the boat to accelerate and decelerate steadily instead of simply moving the speed I'm telling it to right away. 2) I want to make the player unable to steer the boat unless it is moving. 3) If possible, I want to simulate the vertical floating of a boat during its movement (it going up and down) My current code (C#) is this: using UnityEngine; using System.Collections; public class VehicleScript : MonoBehaviour { public float speed=10; public float rotationspeed=50; // Use this for initialization // Update is called once per frame void Update () { // Forward movement if(Input.GetKey(KeyCode.I)) speed = transform.Translate (Vector3.left*speed*Time.deltaTime); // Backward movement if(Input.GetKey(KeyCode.K)) transform.Translate (Vector3.right*speed*Time.deltaTime); // Left movement if(Input.GetKey(KeyCode.J)) transform.Rotate (Vector3.down*rotationspeed*Time.deltaTime); // Right movement if(Input.GetKey(KeyCode.L)) transform.Rotate (Vector3.up*rotationspeed*Time.deltaTime); } } In the current state of my code, when I press the specified keys, the boat simply moves 10 units/sec instantly, and also stops instantly. I'm not really sure how to make the things stated above, so any help would be appreciated. Just to clarify, I don't necessarily need the full code to implement those features, I just want to know what functions to use in order to achieve the desired effects. Thank you very much.

  • Policy Administration is the Top 2011 IT Priority for Insurers

    - by helen.pitts(at)oracle.com
The current issue of Insurance Networking News includes an interesting column by Novarica's Matt Josefowicz.  Recent research by the firm revealed that policy administration replacement or extension is the most common strategic IT project for insurers this year.  The article goes on to note that insurers are keenly focused on the business capabilities that can be delivered once the system is in production as well as the ability to leverage agile development methodologies and true business/IT collaboration during implementation. The results are not too surprising given that policy administration is a mission-critical system for life and annuity insurers.  As Josefowicz notes, "Core systems are called core for a reason--they are at the heart of the insurer's ability to function.  Replacing them is not to be done lightly, but failing to replace them can mean diminishing the ability to compete or function effectively as a company." Insurers can no longer rely on inflexible policy administration systems that impede their ability to rapidly configure and bring to innovative new products, add riders, support changing business processes and take advantage of market opportunities.  The ability to leverage the policy administration systems to better service customers and distribution channels by providing real-time access to policy information throughout the policy lifecycle is also critical to sustain loyalty and further fuel growth.Insurers can benefit from a modern, adaptive policy administration system, like Oracle Insurance Policy Administration for Life and Annuity.  You can learn more about the industry's most highly advanced, rules-based system, which is unmatched for its highly flexible, rules-based configurability, performance and extensibility, as well as global market industry trends by viewing a complimentary, on-demand Webcast, Adapt, Transform and Grow:  Accelerate Speed to Market with Adaptive Insurance Policy Administration.Data conversions can be a daunting process for many insurers when deciding to modernize, in particular when consolidating from multiple, disparate legacy policy administration systems to a single new platform.  Migrating from a legacy system requires a well-thought out approach that builds on the industry's best thinking from previous modernization efforts and takes data migration off the critical path by leveraging proven methodology and tools to capitalize on the new system's capabilities.  We'll discuss more about this approach in a future Oracle Insurance blog.Helen Pitts is senior product marketing manager for Oracle Insurance's life and annuities solutions.

  • Low hanging fruit where "a sufficiently smart compiler" is needed to get us back to Moore's Law?

    - by jamie
Paul Graham argues that: It would be great if a startup could give us something of the old Moore's Law back, by writing software that could make a large number of CPUs look to the developer like one very fast CPU. ... The most ambitious is to try to do it automatically: to write a compiler that will parallelize our code for us. There's a name for this compiler, the sufficiently smart compiler, and it is a byword for impossibility. But is it really impossible? Can someone provide a concrete example where a paralellizing compiler would solve a pain point? Web-apps don't appear to be a problem: just run a bunch of Node processes. Real-time raytracing isn't a problem: the programmers are writing multi-threaded, SIMD assembly language quite happily (indeed, some might complain if we make it easier!). The holy grail is to be able to accelerate any program, be it MySQL, Garage Band, or Quicken. I'm looking for a middle ground: is there a real-world problem that you have experienced where a "smart-enough" compiler would have provided a real benefit, i.e that someone would pay for?

  • SAP Applications Certified for Oracle SPARC SuperCluster

    - by Javier Puerta
SAP applications are now certified for use with the Oracle SPARC SuperCluster T4-4, a general-purpose engineered system designed for maximum simplicity, efficiency, reliability, and performance. "The Oracle SPARC SuperCluster is an ideal platform for consolidating SAP applications and infrastructure," says Ganesh Ramamurthy, vice president of engineering, Oracle. "Because the SPARC SuperCluster is a pre-integrated engineered system, it enables data center managers to dramatically reduce their time to production for SAP applications to a fraction of what a build-it-yourself approach requires and radically cuts operating and maintenance costs." SAP infrastructure and applications based on the SAP NetWeaver technology platform 6.4 and above and certified with Oracle Database 11g Release 2, such as the SAP ERP application and SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse, can now be deployed using the SPARC SuperCluster T4 4. The SPARC SuperCluster T4-4 provides an optimized platform for SAP environments that can reduce configuration times by up to 75 percent, reduce operating costs up to 50 percent, can improve query performance by up to 10x, and can improve daily data loading up to 4x. The Oracle SPARC SuperCluster T4-4 is the world's fastest general purpose engineered system, delivering high performance, availability, scalability, and security to support and consolidate multi-tier enterprise applications with Web, database, and application components. The SPARC SuperCluster T4-4 combines Oracle's SPARC T4-4 servers running Oracle Solaris 11 with the database optimization of Oracle Exadata, the accelerated processing of Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud software, and the high throughput and availability of Oracle's Sun ZFS Storage Appliance all on a high-speed InfiniBand backplane. Part of Oracle's engineered systems family, the SPARC SuperCluster T4-4 demonstrates Oracle's unique ability to innovate and optimize at every layer of technology to simplify data center operations, drive down costs, and accelerate business innovation.
