  • Laptop battery holds charge, but won't charge any more.

    Ok, I'm sure I will need to replace either my battery or my AC adapter, but would rather not buy one if the other is the problem. My problem is. I have a Sager laptop that gets quite a bit of use. The charging has always been a little bit odd. If I was in the process of using it, it would charge just fine and stay On AC power. If I left it alone, however(power settings to ONLY turn off the monitor) in either Ubuntu or Windows 7 it decides that it didn't want to use AC power anymore and would just start draining the battery until it died. Now, suddenly, it won't charge at all. The capacity was great up to this point which happened in an instant. It will recognize the battery but won't see the AC power if plugged in while the battery is in. I can power up the laptop without the battery and it works fine. If I plug in the battery while powered up it will claim it's charging it, but it stays at the same percentage. If I unplug the power, it will switch over to Battery fine, but I have to power down and unplug the battery to get it back on AC power. I've had dying/dead batteries before but they typically won't hold a full charge anymore but it still winds up to 100% then drops quickly when unplugged. This seems more like a chip problem in the battery to me, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

  • Dell Inspiron N5110 Battery lasts only for 1.5 hours as opposed to 4 hours on Windows 7

    I've a Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop with the following specs: i5 processor 4 GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce GT540M Ubuntu 12.04LTS My laptop is overheating and the battery is lasting for only about 1.5 hours. I had checked if the battery indicator was problematic but it turned out it wasn't. I drained the battery to it's least possible value and that came to around 1 hr 40 minutes. In fact, I've the same problem with Debian and Xubuntu as well. I would like to get some proper solution for this. FYI: I've been having this problem since Ubuntu 11.04 but I'm not able to solve this in spite of trying various fixes like reducing brightness, Removing startup apps, Updating kernel and what not?. I'm a big fan of Ubuntu but this problem is stopping me from using Ubuntu and I'm using Win7 for 90% of the time.

  • Is there ongoing work in the kernel team to improve battery life under linux?

    I have read in some forums that the kernel team is working on improving battery life and energy efficiency in linux. Unfortunately our community really lags behind windows and mac in that regard. I would like to read about the reasons why this difference exists with other platforms. Is it purely due to closed hardware specs from vendors or does it has to be with kernel design issues? Apple devices with unix cores have amazing battery times, but they also design their own hardware...just want to understand this issues in a less technical way I know that recent kernel updates in Ubuntu have improved the battery life in most computers, but I was wondering if there is still development going on and where can I read more about it.   • MacBook says to replace battery. Should I?

    Hi! My MacBook says that battery is not charging, and the battery is completely empty (in fact, pressing the button on the battery illuminates no LEDs). If I plug the power adapter off the mac shuts off immediately. I tried with a spare adapter, and it won't charge it. System information says it has 380 cycles. The battery is 2.5 years old. System profiler says the battery has 0 mAh of capacity, and that it should be replaced. Should I just buy a new battery, or should I bring it to an apple point, and leave it there? They can take a look at it (it's on AppleCare), they told me that they will repair it is there is anything wrong with the charging circuit, but they won't give me a new battery. They will keep the laptop for 10 working days at least... I hate when this happens :P

  • Is it safe to buy a replacement laptop battery that has slightly different voltage than the original?

    I'm looking for a new battery for my Acer Aspire 4741g laptop. I am trying to get a higher capacity battery. Many sites (like this one and this one) list batteries that are interchangeable with the battery that came with the laptop (AS10D41). These batteries have higher capacity, but also marginally lower voltage (11.1V vs. 11.8V). Is this a problem? Does it mean that the battery is actually incompatible? The replacement battery I am looking at is AS10G3E, and is listed in many places as being compatible with the AS10D41, but nobody makes any mention of the differing voltages. I am trying to find out what kind of problems a lower voltage battery can cause. I know P=IV; with reduced voltage, will the machine draw more current, possibly damaging components? I'm just speculating, but I'm worried about the chance that using a battery at a lower voltage will damage my laptop.

  • Recommendations on laptops - long battery life, slim, Windows 7

    Hi, I have been looking at a couple of laptops... The most important requirement is long battery life, slim & light, and runs Windows 7. One that seems to fit the bill is the Sony Vaio Z series laptops. They claim to have long battery life, have some really impressive specs (on paper) and a very nice design. They are not on sale where I am yet but has seen/used them? Second would be the Lenovo Thinkpad IBM x301 For business users, Thinkpad seems to be the way to go. I have also considered Dell Alienware M11x but may not be completely appropriate for business use? What would you recommend with a budget of USD1500-2000?

  • Replacement mouse "feet"?

    The plastic skid pad "feet" on the bottom of my Logitech G9 mouse (which I love!) are getting rather worn down -- to the point that the outer shell of the mouse scrapes on the mousepad a bit. I've had the mouse for about ~2 years now so it does get a lot (I mean lot of use). But, I hate to buy a new mouse when I only need replacement "feet". Where can I obtain replacement mouse feet? Is this even possible?

  • How to rebuild a Li Ion laptop battery?

    I have an aging Gateway NX560XL laptop. The battery is toast and a new one, even aftermarket, starts at $130. So, to experiment, I began tearing apart the old battery to see what can be done. I found it used 8 standard size 18650 Li Ion cells arranged two cells parallel then in series (like: ====). Some online shopping revealed ~$7-13/ea replacements depending on mAh output. My plan is to load test to determine the bad cells and replace only those, as I read that typically only 1 or 2 may be bad. I'm proficient with soldering, however these cells are attached with welded tabs. Some of them broke during disassembly and I'm not sure how to reattach them. What I found online are cells like these that have solder tabs pre-welded to the ends so I can solder wires onto. Is there any guide available that provides the instructions and parts to do this kind of rebuild?

While I was talking to dell tech., he told me that Dell would charge me for the replacement monitor if I fail to return my defective monitor within 15 days. I don't know why he told me that when I didn't ask it. so here is my question. How are they going to charge me?? Dell does not have my credit card or bank account info. Do they store my credit card or bank account information on their database???

    Is there any good Thunderbird replacement with full PGP support ? To be more exact replacement for (Thb +Enigmail this is the tandem Im using now) Best way would be if PGP would be built in into application. Commercial software is also fine :) excluding M$ software. What I need: - PGP support - application much more stable than Thunderbird, - support for Gmail out of the box including support for labels, - better search functionality (search in THB is far away from perfection), - cross platform (I should be able to run it on windows and Linux). So do you guys have an experience with other mail clients which have PGP support ?

  • I modified my registry and now my laptop doesn't report its battery or power settings

    I saved a backup of my registry and then made a change to it. After the change, the Windows 7 battery meter no longer reported how much battery power was left. I also was no longer able to change between Power Profiles in the Control Panel. I tried to restore the original registry but it didn't restore the lost power features. Now I have to keep my laptop plugged in all day because I never know how much power I have left. Anyone know what to do here?

  • Battery notification always showing 'xx% remaining' with Windows 7 on an acer Aspire 5590

    My battery level always shows up as something like 55% remaining or 63% remaining ...etc despite that it is in fact charging. Additionally it doesn't go any further than 80% remaining even if I keep it in charge forever. This leads me to a side annoying effect which is that I cannot proceed to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 as its installer requires the laptop to be plugged with a power cord. My laptop is plugged with the power cord but because of the above issue (it doesn't display anything else than the xx% remaining) Windows thinks that the laptop is using its battery and that the power cord is disconnected. I have installed the original acer ePower Management tool that let you configure the power scheme... etc, I was hoping that this would help me circumvent the 80% issue but it doesn't.

  • Netbook performs hard shutdown without warning on low battery power

    My Asus EEE netbook performs a hard shutdown when it reaches low battery power, without giving any warning - i.e. the power just goes off, without any shutdown process. I can't find anything in the syslog, and no error messages are printed before it happens. I've had this problem on previous (K)Ubuntu versions, and hoped updating to Ubuntu Precise would help resolve the issue, but it hasn't. The option in the Power application for "when power is critically low" is currently blank - the only options are a (grayed-out) hibernate and "Power off". I have re-installed indicator-power to no effect. The time remaining reported by acpi is unstable, as is the time remaining reported by gnome-power-statistics. (For example, running acpi twice in succession, I got 2h16min, and then 3h21min remaining. These sorts of jumps in the remaining time are also in the gnome-power-statistics graphs.) It might be possible to write a script to give me advance warning (as per @RanRag's comment below), but I would prefer to isolate why I don't get a critical battery notification from the system before this happens, so that I can take action as appropriate (suspend/shutdown/plug in power) when I get a notification.     Running Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium on a HP Laptop. The system tray power meter never shows the time remaining in the system tray. Only really ever show a percentage remaining number as pictured. The windows help documentation on the "battery meter" seems to indicate that it should display a time remaining indicator, is this accurate? How accurate is the battery meter? The accuracy of what the battery meter reports—what percentage of a full charge remains and how long you can use your laptop before you must plug it in—depends on several factors. Most of these factors fall into the following two categories: What you use the laptop for. Because some activities drain the battery faster than others (for example, watching a DVD consumes more power than reading and writing e-mail), alternating between activities that have significantly different power requirements changes the rate at which your laptop uses battery power. This can vary the estimate of how much battery charge remains. Battery hardware and sensor circuitry. Newer, "smart" batteries are equipped with circuitry that calculates the measurements of charge remaining and reports the information to the battery meter. Older batteries use less sophisticated circuitry and might be less accurate.

  • Laptop does not charge old or new battery with Old and New AC adapters.

    My Sager computer has been having a strange issue with the charging. For a long time it would be working perfectly as long as I was active on it. After I'd leave idle for a while it would suddenly decide it didn't want to use AC power anymore and would just discharge the battery until it shutdown because of low battery levels. Was not a huge deal to me since I just sent it to standby when done with it and it worked fine. Recently, however, it would not detect AC power while the battery was in. It ran from the battery just fine but until you powered it down, unplugged the battery, then plugged in the AC adapter it would not be on AC. In addition if I plug the battery back in after it's on AC power, it will see it but the battery won't charge though it can still discharge it. This is OS independent. I tried both a replacement battery and a replacement AC adapter. Neither solved my issue. I'm fairly comfortable opening and servicing a laptop but I don't know where to start. I'd like to avoid replacing my system board if possible. Any Ideas?

  • iPhone apps causing battery to drain out

    Hi, Recently my iPhone battery started to discharge in just one day. I do not use my iPhone much (less than 1 hour a day). and then while discussing it with couple of colleagues, I heard that there are some apps which even if installed on your iPhone can cause your battery to drain out faster. It does not matter if you are not using those apps, only having them installed was enough to cause battery drain. I have heard this from couple of my techie friends as well and thus had to put some credibility to it. Being an iPhone developer, I don't think that is possible. Do you think if this is possible for an app to cause battery drain just by being installed there on iPhone?

  • Getting the battery current values for the Android Phone

    I am trying to collect power usage statistics for the Android G1 Phone. I am interested in knowing the values of Voltage and Current, and then able to collect statistics as reported in this PDF. I am able to get the value of Battery voltage through registering for an intent receiver to receive the Broadcast for ACTION_BATTERY_CHANGED. But the problem is that Android does not expose the value of current through this SDK interface. One way I tried is via sysfs interface, where I can view the battery current value from adb shell, using the following command $cat /sys/class/power_supply/battery/batt_current 449 But that too works only if the phone is connected via USB interface. If I disconnect the phone, I see the value of batt_current as '0'. I am not sure why the value of current reported is zero. It should be more than zero, right? Any suggestion / pointers for getting battery current value? Also please correct me if I am wrong.
