  • Browser support for internal corporate tools

    We are on the verge of a conversion. For years, our company supported only IE for its internal (intranet) home-built tools. Since a few of our users are still on XP, which means IE only goes up to 8... a heavily JS / jQuery site wont even load! We have been in the process of converting to use Chrome instead, to make use of its javascript performance. But, it has now been suggested that we support all common browsers... internally for these tools. Which means more development time to scale-back some of these new applications, more time to test in all browsers, and we are already under staffed. Are there any good informational sites/posts out there, that already make this argument?

  • Reset scale/width/zoom of Safari on iPhone using JavaScript/onorientationchange

    I am displaying different content depending on how the user is holding his/her phone using the onorientationchange call in the body tag. This works great - I hide one div while making the other visible. The div in portrait mode looks great on first load. I use this to get the right scale/zoom: <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width; initial-scale=1.0; maximum-scale=1.0;" /> Even if the content in portrait mode run over, the width is correct and the user can scroll down. The display in landscape mode is perfect too. However, if content in landscape mode requires the user the scroll down, then when the user returns to portrait mode, the screen is "zoomed out" so to speak. This happens whether or not the user scrolled down while in landscape mode. I've tried many different things to try to get the scale/zoom/width of the screen right, but no luck. Is there any way to do this? Thanks in advance!

  • WPF RibbonTextBox Width problem

    Hey guys, It seems to me that the Ribbon control has a problem with textboxes. I was expecting a common TextBox control behaviour: a fixed width and a visible caret when the text exceeds the width. But the RibbonTextBox control changes its width and when the text exceeds the right limit, the overflow is not visible. I found a hack on a blog that does something like this: var img = SearchButton.Template.FindName("image", SearchButton); if (img != null && img is Image) (img as Image).Visibility = Visibility.Collapsed; var lbl = FindTemplateControl<Label>(SearchText); var border = SearchText.Template.FindName("Bd", SearchText); if (border != null && border is Border && img != null && lbl != null) { (border as Border).Width = SearchText.ActualWidth - (((Image)img).ActualWidth + lbl.ActualWidth); } but I reallly don't want to do such a workaround. Is there any other simpler way to achieve simple TextBox behaviour?

  • Width of li with two floats different in IE, correct in FF

    I've worked out most of the kinks with my "lava-lamp" effect that I'm trying to create. Basically I want two curly braces (both are images) to wrap a list-item, then follow over to the next list-item. I always build in FF, then make exceptions for IE. I can't figure out what exception I need to make! I'm using an absolutely positioned li that contains two div's. The first div is floated left, the second is floated right. The width of the li is set to the width of the li it supposed to be wrapping. Thus creating the effect of the braces on the left and right sides of the text. It works beautifully in Firefox, but IE has two issues: The bottoms of the images are cut off. Sometimes they reappear when the animation ends, sometimes they don't. I assume this has to do with height, but no matter what I set the height to, it fails! The width is completely wrong. Here's a live example of it: http://jsbin.com/odome/2 The left position in IE is always 5-7px more than in FF, but that's a small difference. I'm more concerned with the width and the bottoms of the images being trimmed. Thanks, as always, for the help!

    I have been working on this for about 2 days, so i thought i share my learnings with you. The question is: Is it possible to make the width of a cell in a grouped UITableView smaller? The answer is: No. But there are two ways you can get around this problem. Solution #1: A thinner table It is possible to change the frame of the tableView, so that the table will be smaller. This will result in UITableView rendering the cell inside with the reduced width.     I'm using Chris Coyier's full width hack on a site I am building, but stumped on how I can get the div to have the height of whatever it is containing. Usually I would achieve this by adding overflow:auto to the container, but if I do that it breaks the hack. Is it possible to achieve a height and still use this hack?   • How to get width of a div in pixels using JQuery (IE)

    Hello there. At first glance it sounds easy... when using JQuery one can use the .width() method to retrieve the width of an element. The problem comes when the DIV element does not have its size in pixels but in words like 'auto' or 'inherit'. When I do this it works nice in Firefox and Chrome even if the size is specified in words: alert($('#id_div').css('width')); // these two sentences does not It returns something like: 96px. But, IE returns the word 'auto'. I need to know the size it has in pixels because I have to do some calculations with that number... so, I've been wondering how to solve this problem. But for some elements I wanted to apply following change: when I add width to .field class layout goes to blazes: element with .field class appears under element with field-label class. Only clue I have is that I initially was having problems, tried using the old method of fixing isights (involving installing isight-firmware-tools) before realizing that I just hadn't turned on the VM setting to allow the VM to access the webcam. :) Anyway, I wonder if installing that messed something up. However, I think this is a red herring because I've: shut down and turned back on the Mac, restarted the VM, tried a different VM (for which I never installed isight-firmware-tools, and created an entirely new ubuntu vm.   • CSS Width Greater then Page Width without Horizontal Scroll (overflow:hidden not an option)

    I've got a basic layout going in 960.gs. One line of text is absolutely positioned, starting within an inner DIV and exiting only the right side of the page. Here's a screenshot: The issue is that as the text appears as a series of unbroken words, if the width of the text box doesn't extend beyond the end of the page, it breaks some distance from the edge. overflow: hidden; doesn't do the trick because I need to set the width wider than the page. float won't work because the text can't escape the width of the inner DIV. I can't set it outside the inner DIV and just position it there as the same problem will still exist. The code is basically as simple as: <wrapper (containing) DIV> <text stripe DIV> <p></p> </text stripe DIV> </ wrapper DIV> I know I've done something like this before and I can't for the life of me remember what I ended up doing.   • ListView item won't extend width to fill_parent

    I have a custom ViewGroup that inflates a ListView from an xml layout. The list item layout is inflated from another xml file. All of the views are set to fill_parent. The ListView fills its parent, but the ListView items don't. I've tried putting the ListView in a LinearLayout and assigning weight to it. Tried RelativeLayout as well. Also, I've built the ListView programmaticaly, without using the xml layout. Even changed the LayoutParams before adding the view to the ViewGroup. I've also taken in consideration these posts as well: Width of clickable area in ListView w/ onListItemClick, In Android, how can I set a ListView item's height and width?, Android Listview width prob. Any ideas to why the items don't extend to fill width? And how to extend them?     Is browser fingerprinting a sufficient method for uniquely identifying anonymous users? What if you incorporate biometric data like mouse gestures or typing patterns? The other day I ran into the Panopticlick experiment EFF is running on browser fingerprints. Of course I immediately thought of the privacy repercussions and how it could be used for evil. But on the other hand, this could be used for great good and, at the very least, it's a tempting problem to work on. While researching the topic I found a few companies using browser fingerprinting to attack fraud. And after sending out a few emails I can confirm at least one major dating site is using browser fingerprinting as but one mechanism to detect fake accounts. (Note: They have found it's not unique enough to act as an identity when scaling up to millions of users. But, my programmer brain doesn't want to believe them).     I am trying to produce a table with a different number of cells in each row. The first row is a header row (every other row contains cells). This header is the width of the table. The second row has 2 cells in it... the third has 1 cell... the fourth has 4 cells... the fifth and final row has 3 cells. I want the table set up so that the rows span the full width of the table. If the table is 1000px... The header would be 1000px wide the cells in the 2nd row would be 500px EACH the cell in the 3rd row would be 1000px the cells in the 4th row would be 250px EACH and the cells in the 5th row would be 333px, 334px, and 333px each (left-to-right) I figured out I could use colspan for the first 4 rows, but the 5th (with 3 cells) would require a non-integer value. The cells in the 5th row won't expand beyond their column without colspan that I can tell... trying the width:## CSS code inside a div tag for each cell inside the td tag creating a class or classes that define the cell widths id-ing each cell, with or without a div tag, and defining widths individually and adjuting the table-layout: option After several days, I'm now at my rope's end. The only thing I can come up with is deliberately tripling the number of cells in each row so that colspan would be all integer values. That sounds inconvenient and unreasonably difficult to format the table the way I'd like. It's a table of Batman movies for a website -- a practice website I'm building, in order to learn HTML/CSS. I've been working on-and-off with HTML for several months, and CSS for a few weeks. PS: It is not being used for layout, I am simply trying to adjust the layout of the table itself.

  • jQuery width() returns 0 for a span element created on the fly?

    Hi, I'm trying to determine the width of a string. I'm using the following code but it always return 0. It seems to be that as the span element is created and not already present in the page body, jQuery width() returns 0. Is there a way such that I can get the width of the text without resorting to creating dummy html code in the page? Thanks :) $('<span>test</span>').width(); // width = 0 $('span.width').width(); // returns a width value <body><span class="width">test</span></body>
