• Input type "Text" to have a blurred text, which dissappears onFocus?

  Some websites have forms with input type="text". And inside these textboxes there is a blurred text, which says for example: "Enter your name here". And then onClick or OnFocus or whatever, the text dissappears and you can type into the textbox. Like the title of posting a question here at stackoverflow, same thing. How is this done easiest way? Would prefer if there was not too much js involved. Thanks

• Use a table as container or not?

  I have created my entire website by using a main table, and having the content inside the table. Some ppl suggest this is wrong, and I would like to know what to do specifically in my situation. On my index.html I have a <table align="center"> and then all content in it. Now the content is in form of DIVS and they all have relative positioning, so they are relative to the table. For example: <table align="center"> <tr> <td> <div style="position:relative; left:14px; top:50px;"> CONTENT HERE... (Form, divs, images) </div> </td> </tr> </table> I have just gotten to the stage of browser compatibility. Without making any changes whatsoever, my website works perfect in FF, SAFARI, Chrome and Opera. Only trouble with IE. So for my Q, if you where me, would you change my layout and remove the tables, and instead use alot more css and alot more DIVS, or would you go with what I have? And please if you answer me, don't just provide me with the answer, but also a "why" that is... in other words, give me arguments and facts... Thanks

• How should I solve this MySql problem (PHP) ? (Beginner)

  I have several tables in a MySql database. I have a classifieds website, and at the bottom I display the users last visited classifieds. I do this by storing the ID:s of the ads to an array in the cookie. Now, my db is made up like this kindof: Main Table: // Stores global information, ie these fields have to be filled out in every record, never be blank ID Price category Seller Item Table: // Stores descriptive info about whats for sale ID AD_ID (FK) //This is the same as ID in the MAIN TABLE Color Size Mileage etc My problem is that I need to know what category the ad is in, in order to query mysql for the right information I think. So I need two variables, but the cookie only has one (ID) stored. Offcourse I could make two queries, first one just matching the ID to the main_table and fetch the category from the Main_table. Then make the second query and fetch all other info from the right table. Here is an example if the category was Vehicles: SELECT * FROM main_table, vehicles_table, WHERE main_table.id=$id_from_cookie AND main_table.ad_id=vehicles_table.ad_id As you can see above, I need the category to write in what table to check, right? But I think there must be a smarter way, like fetching them in one single query using only one variable (id from cookie)? How should I do this? Understand? Let me know if you need more input... • redirect wont work in Chrome

  I have a form on my website. When this form is filled out, it is then validated by a javascript validation function. At the bottom of this function I have this piece of code: window.location="../index.html"; This wont work on Chrome, but does work in Firefox. My Q is, how can I make this simple redirect work on all (most) browsers? Thanks

• How to hide URL from users when submitting this form?

  I have a form with many many fields... When submitting these fields, I use the POST method which hides the actual variables passed along to the PHP page. However, I can't get rid of the complete link. Changing from GET to POST did make all the form fields invisible in the URL, but this part is still visible: mydomain.com/bin/query# I want it to be invisible, or say: mydomain.com/search I have mod_rewrite enabled so there is a possibility to do this with mod_rewrite I think, but I am new to mod_rewrite so I need your help... How should I hide this URL? If you need more input let me know...

• What information about a user is available via PHP?

  This is about a classifieds website, where anyone may post classifieds. I have a security database which I intend to fill with information about the user who posts the classifieds. I intend to record information such as IP, name, tel, email, classified_text, classified_title etc etc. The reason for all this is that sometimes people become victims of fraud (fake classifieds etc). So I wonder, what information is possible to get from the poster which may help in tracking him/her down? IP is a given, but what else could be useful? And I would much like examples of how it would be useful also, as well as the code for it please, like $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']. And btw, I use PHP and have Sql as a database. Thanks

• Submit form without page reloading

  I have a classifieds website, and on the page where ads are showed, I am creating a "Send a tip to a friend" form... So anybody who wants can send a tip of the ad to some friends email-adress. I am guessing the form must be submitted to a php page right? <form name='tip' method='post' action='tip.php'> Tip somebody: <input name="tip_email" type="text" size="30" onfocus="tip_div(1);" onblur="tip_div(2);"/> <input type="submit" value="Skicka Tips"/> <input type="hidden" name="ad_id" /> </form> When submitting the form, the page gets reloaded... I don't want that... Is there any way to make it not reload and still send the mail? Preferrably without ajax or jquery... Thanks

• Do I need JDK or only JRE?

  I use Solr in my website, and now I am about to configure my VPS account. I am at the stage where I need to install java in order to make Solr work. Now, I only plan on running solr, and using it as it is (I have no java programming skills at all), so my Q is, do I need the entire JDK which includes JRE, or is JRE enough?   In the beginning of a file on my server (linux), which is located in the /etc/init.d/ folder I have this line: !/bin/sh -e What does it mean, because every time I execute the rest of the script it works fine except for an error which shows: !/bin/sh not found Any ideas?

• What statistics app should I use for my website?

  I have my own server (with root access). I need statistics of users who visit my website etc etc... I have looked at an app called Webalyzer... Is this a good choice? I run apache2 on a Ubuntu 9 system... If you know of any good statistics apps for servers please let me know. And a follow-up question: All statistics are saved in log-files right? So how large would these log-files become then? Possibility to split them would be good, dont know if this is possible with Webalyzer though...

• Check mysql_query results if DELETE query worked?

  I have a DELETE query which deletes a record from a mysql db. is there any way to make sure if the delete was performed or not? I mean, for a query to FIND stuff you do $res=mysql_query($var); $nr=mysql_num_rows($res); and you get nr of rows returned. Is there any similiar method for deletion of records? Thanks

• Solr authentication possible? (or apache port authentication would also work)

  Currently anybody can access the solr admin page by going to my_ip:8983/solr I can't have it like that, so how can I make it prompt for password or something? I have setup my servers apache2.conf file to prompt for password whenever my site is accessed by www.mydomain.com. But when using another port, the "require password" wont show up. Any ideas how to secure this? Don't point me to the SolrSecurity wiki because it's simply too outdated. I have tried it without luck. Thanks
